Nizhoni awoke with a fright from the dream she had. The fur on her forehead was wet from sweating and she was panting a little. Her heart was racing in her chest and she was trying to remember where she was. She saw Maka sitting in a chair watching her and she started to get up off the bed she was in.
"Easy child." Maka told her.
"Maka...what happened to me?" She asked.
"You feel asleep. Were you...dreaming?" Maka asked as she handed Nizhoni something to drink.
"Thank you...I think it was a dream, I..." Nizhoni said when it dawned on her that a lot of time had passed by "What time is it?"
"The hour is late young one, everyone has returned to their homes for the night." Maka told her.
"It's already night...I have to go." Nizhoni said as started to get up.
"What did you see?" Maka asked.
"Excuse me?" Nizhoni asked.
"In your dream, what did you see that made you be so frightened?"
"Oh...I...I don't know how to explain it." Nizhoni said.
"Please...sit, and tell me what you can." Maka said as she pointed towards a chair next to her.
Nizhoni had a strange feeling but she sat down anyway. The chair was deceivingly comfortable and she felt fully relaxed.
"Now child...tell me of what you saw once you closed your eyes." Maka told her.
"When I closed my...eyes... I saw things. People and animals...but they looked like misty blue versions of themselves...like water going through the air from a waterfall." Nizhoni described after closing her eyes.
"Ah...that would be the spirits of the living, young one."
Nizhoni opened her eyes and looked at Maka. Her eyes were closed but one could tell she saw all that was happening around her. Nizhoni closed her eyes again and continued.
"I could see the spirits of the animals around the village, the villagers and the visitors from the Suwiwe village as well. Some of the...spirits were very bright, while others seemed dim." She said.
"The brighter spirits are those of the good, pure and righteous, the dimmer spirits are those of people who are good but not pure or righteous. Then there are spirits that are as black as the night...they are the spirits of the evil and wicked." Maka explained "Please continue."
"I tried to see where we were but there was nothing other then the spirits of the animals around your home."
Maka opened her eyes and looked at Nizhoni "You cannot see the spirit of a Cheveyo...nor yourself."
Nizhoni opened her eyes and looked at Maka. "What is a Cheveyo?"
Maka smiled at Nizhoni and stood up. She walked over to a small stockpile of wood and put some onto her dimming fire to relight the blaze. After she sat down she looked back at Nizhoni with a smile.
"Dear child, a Cheveyo is what are people use to be. The Cheveyo are our ancestors, they were a powerful race that learned how to control their spirits and even separate their spirit from their bodies. They could control their enemies by entering their body or influence the forces of nature or animals to aid them. They were also known as Spirit Warriors.
"We all used to live in a magnificent stone city called Awenasa which was in a valley; much like this one, which was also surrounded by flowers. Every cycle during the Full Flower Moon, the best place to be would be in the center of Awenasa but one cycle...the flowers never bloomed. I don't know why but soon after the Cheveyo people started to disappear, they lost there abilities to become Cheveyo.
"It was around that time that the Eastern tribes formed. Those who lost their powers separated into many tribes rather then become one nation. They believed that, with out their powers they couldn't live in Awenasa. After the last Cheveyo disappeared many years went by before another was born. There were still many who remembered what the Cheveyo were and what the sign of them was. They were surprised that another was born but they trained the young Cheveyo.
"The mother of that child died as a result however. Being a kit meant the child had no control of its spiritual powers and when it first fed from its mothers breast it drained the mother's very soul away. The reason why the Cheveyo mothers never died was because they could protect themselves from the child's untrained powers." Maka explained.
"What happened to Awenasa after the peoples left?" Nizhoni asked.
"With out anyone there to care for the stone structures they began to crumble, no one knows if anything remains of Awenasa. Nor does anyone remember where it is located." Maka said.
Nizhoni started thinking about what Maka said, and then something occurred to her.
"You said that...a Cheveyo could not see the spirit of themselves or other Cheveyo, correct?"
"That I did dear."
"...are...are you a Cheveyo, Maka?"
Maka just smiled. She turned to face the fire and said "I was, but I was born elsewhere. The previous shaman of this village told me the history of the Cheveyo, just as I'm telling you. She however was not a Cheveyo but she told me the last time a Cheveyo was born from this village, she also showed me a way to discover if someone was or is a Cheveyo."
"How?" Nizhoni asked.
"What I did to you." Maka said which startled Nizhoni.
"...What did you do to me?" She asked.
"When you came in...what I had you breathe in. The scents from those herbs, spices and minerals puts a Cheveyo; who inhales deeply, into a near death state that allows a mark to show on their shoulder. It glows a faint blue...which is a sign that, whoever has it, is a Cheveyo." Maka said then looked at Nizhoni "You child...you are a Cheveyo as well."
Nizhoni didn't quite believe she was a Cheveyo but what about the spirits of the people she saw...and her dream as well as what Maka said about the mothers of a Cheveyo who weren't a Cheveyo.
"You said...that the mother of a Cheveyo dies because of the kits inability to control its power."
"That I did." Maka said as she wondered where Nizhoni was taking the conversation.
"But my mother is still alive."
"Oh dear child, I see that Kimi hasn't told you the truth...and I don't blame her." Maka said shaking her head.
"What do you mean?"
"Most people of the Eastern tribes are seeing the Cheveyo as demons rather then their ancestors. What Kimi never told you was that she isn't your mother. Yes she raised you from birth but she is not your birth mother." Maka told her. "When you go home after we're done talking, and when you wake up in the morning...ask her who Sinopa was, just say you know."
Nizhoni seemed upset but she didn't dwell on it. Instead she asked "I know that there are other tribes, not of us. Do they have similar ancestry?"
"They do, and just like our ancestors...they slowly lost their powers as well. I do not know the names of their ancestors but I do know the marks of them." Maka said.
"Could...could you tell me?"
"Of course dear, of the Western wolf tribes...they have always considered the mark a curse. In the center of their backs would be a mark in the shape of a wolf. They could change their body forms into larger versions of themselves that resembled their animal cousins. Of course over the years, new members who have that ability don't know how to change back into their original from and go mad.
"Then there are the Southern tribes...they are similar to the Western wolves but they are known as coyotes. I know nothing at all about their ways but, I do know that their ancestors had a mark on their forehead that glowed similar to ours." Maka informed her.
"Then...that's who I saw in my dream." Nizhoni said.
"Who did you see in a dream?" Maka asked.
"After the visions I had...I had another dream. I saw myself standing next to two males from other tribes. One was a wolf from the west...he had a blood red mark that looked like a wolf on his back...the other was another who was as white as snow and had a glowing mark on his head. I had the glowing mark on my shoulder like you said the Cheveyo have." Nizhoni told her.
"That is another ability of the Cheveyo, child. They sometimes receive visions of the future." Maka said.
"Then it's a future I do not want apart of." Nizhoni said and started to shiver from memories of Matchitehew and the two other evil spirits.
"What else did you see?" Maka asked after seeing Nizhoni shiver.
"I saw Matchitehew...and the two other evil spirits. The wolf and the...coyote, and I were facing them...and Matchitehew struck us down." Nizhoni said as she put her hands to her shoulders and shiver again.
Maka was disturbed by what Nizhoni said. "Could it be?" Maka said as she headed over and started reading through a book of hers.
"What is it Maka?"
"Please...return here tomorrow and I shall have an answer for you." Maka said and began reading through her book.
Nizhoni did as Maka asked and left her home. She then started down the trail towards the village. It took only a few minuets for her to reach the village and there she stopped. She started thinking about what Maka had told her and, so far it seemed believable. Maka was the villages shaman after all.
She closed her eyes and leaned against one of the wooden structures and cleared her mind. She didn't know how but she could see the misty blue spirits again, all in the caves laying on their beds in their homes. She opened her eyes and could still see them.
"Maybe...I am a Cheveyo." She said to her self and turned her head to look in the direction she was heading and saw a lookout heading towards her.
She decided it would be better if he found her walking towards her home rather then standing by a structure suspiciously. She took a couple steps back and started to walk around the corner and promptly into the lookout.
"Ugh" they both uttered and Nizhoni quickly said "I'm sorry."
She could see the lookout smile warmly as he said "Out for a little late night stroll are we?"
"I just left Maka's after speaking with her; I'm on my way home now." Nizhoni said.
"Nizhoni isn't it?" He asked.
"Yes." She answered.
"Your friend Una was looking for you earlier. You might want to visit her in the morning and let her know you're ok, now I better get back to my patrol. Have a good night Nizhoni." He said and continued past her.
She quickly continued on towards her and her mother Kimi's home. It only took her a few minuets to get there and soon she stood in front of the door. She entered and went straight to her room.
She sighed once in her own familiar room. Her own belongings, her bed, even things she still had from her childhood. She smiled for no reason at her belongings as she always did before she took the skirt she wore off and climbed into bed.
She lay on top of her bed as she stared at the top of her room. It was plain rock of the mountain cave that the home was built into, plain and cold. She ran her hands through the fur on her belly and breasts a few times as she thought about what Maka told her. She was tired and sleep was already taking her. She managed to pull the fur blanket over her before she fell into a deep sleep.
****************
Nizhoni opened her eyes and she was met with the blinding light from the sun. It took a few moments before her eyes adjusted to the light before she looked around herself. She noticed that she was in a valley where a few flowers bloomed every so often. She started walking towards the center of the valley for no reason.
When she got closer to the bottom she noticed stone objects everywhere. She couldn't tell if they were natural or made by hand. She continued looking around when she spotted two figures ahead of her. She yelled at them but received no answer so she headed towards them. When she was closer she could that one was a male wolf and the other was her.
The male wolf was the same one from her dream while she was at Maka's and he seemed gravely wounded. She in the dream was trying to save him but he was bleeding badly. She didn't have time to see how it ended because the next thing she knew she was awake in her own room.
