Day Six: Losses and Insanity

By Xan Steel

Judy felt the weight of Nicks body on top of her. His open jaw was around her throat, but relaxed and unmoving. She struggled with his body to get him to move off of her. "Nick, come on Hun, we need to get moving." He didn't move an inch as she continued to try and move him, and it was during this time she made a sudden realization. If she shot him with the tranq gun then he would be out, but she also realized tranq guns don't make a sound. She began to feel a warm liquid running down her arm, as she pulled it out from under his body and looked at it. If a scream could actually wake the dead, this was one of them. The 9mm she was still holding on to was covered in his blood as it ran down her arm. "No no, oh please no!" She frantically struggled with his body trying to lift him up and roll him to the side. She looked and saw where she shot him, and shortly after broke down crying uncontrollably. She wrapped her arms around him unable to think straight, "Nick, oh fertilizer! No don't you die on me." She tried to check for a pulse, but she was trembling too badly to find it and started yelling for help, as she turned to look back at him. "I'm sorry. I'm so sorry. I though I had the tranq gun on me." She pulled him in tightly and started rocking him.

Bogo and McHorn came through the door and saw Judy holding and talking to Nicks limp body. As they got closer Bogo noticed something on his backside as he knelt down to look at it better. It was one of the high-level tranquilizer darts. He pulled it from him and held it up, and saw that it was empty. He turned and looked at her, "Hopps. Hopps look here for a second." He said as he held it up for her to see. "It's one of the darts the SWAT team was ordered to use out here."

It was at this point one of the members of the SWAT team came around from behind some creates. Bogo looked at them and noticed the honey badger right away. "Lieutenant Dunn, I thought you went back with your team?" McHorn said before Bogo could as he came into the light.

"That was the original plan, that is until I overheard her radio chatter. I figured if he did, in fact, go savage, then an extra set of eyes couldn't hurt. How is he?"

Bogo convinced Judy to let him look at Nick. As he examined him, he noticed that the shot was just above his left lung, and below the left shoulder. A serious shot, but not life threatening. Dunn then put his lighter near his nose and saw the flame flicker intermittently. Everyone but Judy sighed in relief, as Bogo turned to Judy and put a hand on her shoulder gently, "Hopps look at me." She turned to look at him. "He's going to be fine, as the shot is not fatal."

Judy tried to speak through her tears and pain. "H..He's going, to be ok?"

"Yes, we just need to get you both to the hospital, alright?" he replied as she nodded relieved, as she held one of Nicks' hands lovingly, as she continued to whisper to him that she was sorry.

Lieutenant Dunn walked outside to catch his breath as Bogo came out with him and let McHorn stay with Judy. "Chief, this night isn't over yet."

"I was hoping it was close to being over."

Dunn sighed, "Before I shot Nick in the butt, I overheard a few of my team members heading out to the borrows because they got reports of savage predators attacking out there."

Bogo hung his head as he shook it. "I'm getting this really odd feeling that all of this was done to tear these two apart."

"What makes you say that?" Dunn replied.

"It was them that made Bellwether openly admit to her activities of using the Night Howler Serum the first time. Not to mention their little ones are out at the borrows with her family," Bogo said.

A look of surprise came over Dunn as he looked back at Bogo. "Little ones?"

"Yes, they are a married couple with eight kids," Bogo answered.

Dunn shook his head, "And just when I thought I'd seen and heard it all."

Bogo gave a light laugh, "One thing I've learned in all my years on the force is, just when you think that life shows you something new." It was at this point they heard the sirens of the ambulance as it approached them. Bogo turned to go and get McHorn, only to see him carrying out Nick as Judy followed closely.

The paramedics opened the back door and began to pull out a stretcher for Nick as McHorn laid him on it. Judy got up on the stretcher and laid next to him as they put it in the ambulance. One of the paramedics turned to Bogo, "Chief we'll need you to come down as well so that you can give their information to the hospital as we are going to wheel them into the emergency room." He agreed and said he would follow in the other squad car. Dunn parted ways with them as he headed to the borrows on foot, while Bogo and McHorn got in the other car and followed behind the ambulance.

They managed to stop both Nick and Judy's bleeding with new bandages since they had to take it slow heading back to the city. Meanwhile, behind them, Bogo and McHorn were on the radio with Francine getting a sit-rep from her. The news sadly wasn't good. There was a lot of property damage, many dead prey animals, and there was still a handful of predators on the loose within the city. The borrows, however, were a different story. Many dead predators were found with gunshot wounds from a hunting rifle. Many of the bunny families had been devastated with the death toll currently unknown, but on a lighter note, the two SWAT teams that went out there were getting things under control quickly, just a little too late.

"Any news on the Hopps family?" Bogo said with a level of worry she could hear in his voice.

"Their situation is currently unknown, as I haven't been able to reach them since the attack." There was a long pause before she continued, "Chief I just received word that SWAT team Charlie found the mayor dead."

Bogo threw the receiver in anger, "CRAM THAT SHEEP!" He yelled.

McHorn picked it up, "Francine, inform the media that the ZPD is placing the city and surrounding areas under Marshal Law until Bellwether is captured."

"Understood Lieutenant," she replied.

It was at this point the ambulance came to a stop in front of them. They stopped behind them and wondered what was going on. They watched as Judy got out of the back of the ambulance, however, her eyes and face had no expression outside of the flowing tears running down her cheeks. Her phone was in her hand and the screen was lit up. "Oh no." Bogo softly said as he got out and went to her. "Judy, what's wrong." It was the first time he had ever called her by her first name.

"My family, I just got word from my mother." She finished as she held up her phone to Bogo. He began to read the screen.

Mom: Judy, about half the family, has been killed by the predators.

Judy: What!!! (crying emote)

Mom: Gideon tried to protect us, but he went missing, and I fear

the worse. (Sad emote)

Judy: What about our little ones?!?

(An hour passes)

Judy: Mom!!! (Worry emote)

Mom: (Crying emote) I'm so sorry, I just found your father and he's missing a leg, he said he tried to save them but all he could do was watch them be eaten. (Crying emote)

Judy: (Crying emote x8)

It was at this point they discovered what had stopped them. "Well, well, well, if it isn't the ex-chief of the ZPD." Came Bellwether's voice.

Bogo put her phone down next to Nick's head as he came out from behind the ambulance and saw two Great Horned Owls and one of the orbs on the ground. "My status as Chief has not changed Sheep." He said with mild anger.

"Did you forget the mayor is dead, that means there is no government and you don't have any power of authority here Bogo." Bogo was about to speak went Judy cut him off.

"She's right you know." She said with that emotionless look, as Bogo looked at her.

"Aww if it isn't my star officer," Bellwether said in a slightly sarcastic tone.

Judy gave a melodic laugh, "By your words, I'm no longer an officer."

"That is true, such a shame really." There was a short pause between them before Bellwether spoke to Judy again. "You should know that predprey relationships don't last, or end up in disaster as it's just not meant to be, and is completely unnatural. So why did you betray your own species?" Bellwether asked as Judy walked over to her while Bogo gave a confused look until he saw her unsnap her 9mm briefly. He then watched her hug Bellwether.

"It's ironic, don'tcha think," Judy started to say.

"What's that?" Bellwether asked.

"A little too ironic?" Judy continued.

"Hmm?" Bellwether asked.

"Yeah, I really do think." In a split second Judy pulled her blood covered 9mm from its holster and put it to Bellwether's belly and fired.

*Bang*

Bellwether eyes went wide in terror as she grabbed a hold of Judy feeling the bullet enter her and the sudden rush of pain. Judy meekly spoke again, "Samual." She moved the pistol slightly and fired again, *Bang* "Markus." She repeated this for every one of their little ones, "Stu the 2nd, Nickolas Jr., Bonnie (after her mother), Sylvia, Sharon, Marina." Bellwether started to slump in her grasp as Judy tightened her arm around her waist. "No my little sheep." She said gently nuzzling Bellwether. "There is still one more you must pay for." She then moved the pistol to her throat as her tears started flowing again. "And this is for Nicks mother!" She said in a loud voice as she pulled the trigger and put a sizable hole through her throat. Blood sprayed all over Judy's face and muzzle as Bellwether began to choke. Judy let her go and watched her fall to the ground. "You were so afraid of a predator getting you, that you didn't suspect a prey to be the one to kill you. Ironic, don'tcha think."

It was at this point Judy let go of every emotion she had and began beating and kicking the dying sheep, as she screamed in anger and rage. "YOU TOOK NEARLY EVERYTHING FROM ME! YOU BUSSEL!!" Bogo finally jumped in and pulled her back.

"HOPPS THATS ENOUGH!" He ordered.

"NO, ITS NOT ENOUGH! THAT BUSSEL DESERVES MORE! SHE DESERVES EVERY OUNCE OF MY HATRED AND MY PAIN!!" She screamed.

He spun her around to break her line of sight and pulled her into a tight hold as she struggled with him. After a few minutes, she calmed down and broke down emotionally. "My family, my babies, my husband." She said through her tears and sniffles. After a number of minutes passed, he picked her up and put her back into the ambulance and sent them on their way.

McHorn went over to Bellwether's body and looked at it. "Dispose of it." Bogo said, as he turned to the car and pulled out the radio receiver, and told Francine that they had "found" Bellwether dead, and to make sure the media knew. McHorn took Bellwether's body and put it in a bag and stuffed it in the trunk of the car. He planned to dispose of her body in the Sahara Square's incinerators in the environmental plant that was used to maintain the biomes temperature. They then took off for the hospital to make sure they arrived safely.

It took a few hours but they managed to patch up both Nick and Judy nicely. They also took an oxygen mask and put it on Nick to force the gas he had been breathing out of his system faster, while giving a few weak shots of adrenaline to counteract the tranquilizer that he had been hit with. In the late hours of the night, Judy closed their room door as she went over to Nick in the next bed. He came to and asked her if their family was still safe. No matter how hard she tried she couldn't speak, and instead showed him the message she had gotten.

He choked on his own tears before he spoke, "I have never wanted to kill someone so badly right now." He said through his teeth in anger.

"I already did foxy." He just looked at her in shock. "I killed her, for our little ones, my family, and your mother." She finished while looking at him and broke down again, while he pulled her into a gentle hug in his bed as they both wept together quietly.

A few days later they were giving a clean bill of health and released from the hospital. As they got home there was a letter waiting for them. Nick opened it and began to read it.

"Nick, Judy, this is Bogo. Listen the new assistant mayor has instituted a new law for all officers. When you are ready to return to work you will need to go through the precinct therapist and be evaluated before you can start working again. I know this change is not easy to accept, but a lot of us went through a number of hardships these last few day, especially you two. You will also be getting paid leave to help you until the therapist clears you to return to work."

Nick folded up the letter and placed it on the kitchen counter, and then went over to Judy. The emptiness of their home weighed heavily on them. The door to the room where the little ones slept was closed as they just stared at it, neither one of them having the heart to enter it. Judy turned to Nick and held him tightly as she broke down again. "Our babies..." Nick began to weep with her, realizing this home was going to be very painful to live in from now on.
