Zootopia: More Than Partners, More Than Friends - Part 14
#31 of Zootopia
By the time Nick got home, it was after one in the morning. Parking his car in the driveway--not wanting the sound of the garage door opening to wake up Judy--he turned off the engine, got out and went inside. Much to his surprise, he found his pregnant wife still up, sitting out in the living room in her bathrobe, watching television. Nick threw his car keys down on the the table in the kitchen, still disgusted, angry and tired. He flopped down on the couch next to Judy.
"Where have you been?" asked Judy, not upset, but surprised to see him just getting home.
"Wasting the taxpayers money sitting in a bar waiting on two criminals who were never going to show up in the first place," was the fox's answer. He saw Judy curl her nose and turn when she got a whiff of him. "Yeah, I know, I absolutely reek of cigarette smoke. I tell you, honey bunny, the Health Department should close down that manure pile called Lucky's Bar."
"How long were you there?" inquired the pregnant rabbit.
"Over six hours," said Nick. "And while Jack and Billy and I were there, I ate the most disgusting cheeseburger known to the animal kingdom, drank a bunch of club sodas, breathed in enough smoke that I'll probably have lung cancer by the morning and I wanted to drink so badly I actually started to tremble."
"I'm glad you didn't drink," said Judy, putting her head on his chest, not caring that he stunk of tobacco smoke. "You showed real courage by resisting your temptations."
Nick sighed. The love of his honey bunny helped all the anger and frustration he felt melt away. He rested his muzzle on top of her head, muzzling her long ears affectionately. It was times like this he regretted that he and Judy couldn't make love. She was too far into her pregnancy to have sexual intercourse and neither she nor Nick wanted anything to happen to their unborn children.
"I'm going to get some antacids and then take a long, hot shower," said the fox, looking at the clock on the wall. "I'll be lucky if I get any sleep tonight, but I'll try."
Nick went to the bathroom that he had designated for himself, as Judy said that the key to a successful marriage was separate bathrooms for husbands and wives. Opening up the medicine cabinet, he opened up the bottle of antacids and chewed up several, swallowing them and hoping that they would cure his sour stomach and heartburn. Taking off his clothes, he turned on the faucet in the shower, judging the temperature before getting in. He felt the hot water soothe his dirty, smelly fur, washing away the stench of Lucky's Bar. He was used to taking long showers, as Judy always complained about how badly he smelled when he sweat, but tonight's shower was especially long. He scrubbed hard at his fur with the soap covered luffa sponge. Rinsing thoroughly, he got out and dried himself off with the thick terry cloth towel that was hanging up on the towel rack.
Nick hadn't bothered bringing any clothes with him into the bathroom. With only he and Judy in the house right now, it was no big deal for him to walk around naked. Feeling clean, refreshed and with his stomach now settling down, he entered the master bedroom, finding Judy was now in bed, but not trying to sleep. She giggled at her husband as he strutted in without a stitch of clothing on his body.
"Your the sexiest thing I've seen all day," she quipped.
"What," said Nick, grinning. "You never got around to watching any internet porn today?"
"No," laughed the rabbit as her husband climbed into bed with her. "Besides, none of the male foxes on the internet are as handsome as you."
"Ah," said Nick, kissing his wife on the cheek as he got underneath the covers. "Very true."
"Let's try to get some sleep," advised Judy, turning off the lamp by her side of the bed.
"Good idea," said Nick, turning off his lamp. Yawning, the fox laid his head down on a pillow. Finally, he was in his nice warm bed next to his wife and he was ready for some much needed sleep. His work day would be starting again before he knew it, and he was still thinking about calling in sick before his shift started.
Not even five minutes had passed since the lights had been turned off in Nick and Judy's bedroom when Nick heard his cell phone vibrating on his night stand. As a police officer, he was on call twenty four hours a day, so didn't have the luxury of keeping his phone turned off. Grumbling, he turned on the lamp and answered his phone.
"Hello?" said the fox. Judy had turned her lamp on and saw the expression on her husband's face turn to shock within a few seconds. She knew something was terribly wrong.
"Yeah," said Nick, jumping out of bed. "I'll be right there!" He ended the call and ran over to their large walk in closet, throwing on clothes.
"What happened?" asked Judy, afraid of what the answer would be.
"Somebody broke into my parents house and beat them up," said Nick, pulling a shirt over his head. "I've got to get to the hospital right now!"
"Sweet cheese and crackers," said Judy. "Do you want me to come along?"
"No," said Nick, pulling his pants on and buckling his belt. He opened the drawer to his night stand, pulling out his pistol and detective's badge. "You just get your rest, okay?"
Judy was far enough into her pregnancy that she had been ordered to stay in bed as much as possible and she didn't want to upset her already distraught husband. "Okay," she said. "Tell your Mom and Dad that I love them."
"I will," said Nick, walking out of the room.
Nick's car was equipped with flashing lights and sirens, allowing him to speed all the way to Zootopia General Hospital. Running inside past nurses and doctors in the hall, he found the receptionist desk, flashing the nurse his police badge.
"Detective Nick Wilde," he said, panting. "My parents Norman and Cindy Skulk were brought here after being assaulted?"
"They're right down the hall, Detective," said the nurse.
Nick ran down the hall, seeing two wolves in police uniforms standing outside one of the rooms. He brought his badge out to show them who he was.
"Detective Nick Wilde," he said. "Are my parents Norman and Cindy Skulk in there?"
"Yeah," said the taller of the two wolves. "They just got done giving their statements about what happened. Go ahead, Detective."
Nick ran into the room, seeing his mother and father lying in the two beds. He was aghast at their appearance. Both had several bruises and cuts on their faces. His father looked worse than his mother. He had something wrapped around his chest, leading Nick to believe that he'd suffered broken ribs.
"Mom, Dad, what happened?" he asked.
"It was awful, son," said Norman, his voice raspy from the pain. "These two raccoons broke in and kicked your mother and I around. The male raccoon, he hit me in the chest with a crowbar, then pistol whipped me. We tried to fight back, but they both had guns! Oh . . . ow," he said, scrunching up his face in pain.
Just then, it dawned on Nick that he hadn't heard anything about Anthony and Amanda. He went over to his mother, holding her paw as she cried from the pain. "Mom . . . where are Anthony and Amanda?" he asked.
His mother started sobbing uncontrollably, as did his father. "They . . . they took them, Nick! Those bastards took your brother and sister!"
Nick froze with fear. He couldn't believe what he was hearing. "They . . . they kidnapped them?" he said, his voice quivering.
His father coughed several times. "They said we have to pay them ten million dollars or they'll kill Anthony and Amanda, Nick!"
Nick had never been so afraid in all his life. The two raccoons he, Jack and Billy had been trying to capture had now attacked his family. He felt completely helpless. Here he was, decorated police officer, working in Major Cases as a detective, and right now, there was nothing he could do to help his parents or his siblings. All he could do was cry as he tried desperately to comfort his parents.
"We'll get them back, Mom, Dad," he sobbed. He had no idea if that would actually happen. He was absolutely in fear of what might happen to his beloved brother and sister.
At Major Cases, all the detectives had been called in early and the entire police department had been put on high alert. Walking into the building, Nick saw Chief Bogo was waiting for him. He put a paw on Nick's shoulder.
"I'm sorry, Wilde," said the Cape Buffalo. "We're getting everything assembled right now to hunt those two raccoons down."
"Thanks, Chief," said Nick, sniffling.
"We'll get them," said Bogo, his voice carried the weight of a deadly serious tone. "I promise you we'll get them."
Thirty minutes later, with everyone now assembled in the squad room, including Jack and Billy, the Chief began his briefing, informing everyone what was going on.
"Listen up, people!" hollered Bogo. "There's been a kidnapping in our great city, and I intend to do everything in my power to bring these two vermin to justice and return the children to their parents." He taped the pictures of the two raccoons to a dry erase board for everyone to see. "We believe these are our prime suspects; Billy Joe Sullivan and Bobbie Sue Murphy. They're also wanted in Texas for the murder of an elderly male. They broke into his house, robbing him and shooting him dead. Detectives Nick Wilde and Jack Wolfard have been working to apprehend them, along with our guest detective, Billy Mack, from El Paso, Texas. Detective Mack, would you care to say anything about Sullivan and Murphy?
Billy went to the front of the room to address everyone. "Billy Joe Sullivan and Bobbie Sue Murphy are two of the nastiest creatures I've ever come across. Both have got wrap sheets as wide as the state of Texas and I wouldn't put anything past them. My advice, get money out on the streets and rustle up every confidential informant you can to try and get them to give up some information. Criminals operate in networks, so chances are there's gonna be somebody in Zootopia who knows where these two are hiding."
The coyote returned to his seat. "Thank you, Detective Mack. As most of you know, the two kidnapping victims, Anthony and Amanda Skulk are the brother and sister of our own Nick Wilde, so this one really hits home. Also, Nick's parents were brutally assaulted trying to protect their children. Luckily, they survived and should make a full recovery. I also shouldn't have to tell any of you what a friend Norman Skulk has been to our Department over the years, even risking his own life to save Detective Wolfard when he was shot at the bank months ago."
"Because this is a kidnapping case, I've had no choice but to contact the FBI. I expect we'll have agents in Zootopia within two hours, and I'm not sure how much they'll want to push us out of the way, so for now, let's get to it!"
Everyone went about their tasks. Uniformed officers were sent out trying to cast a dragnet over the city to find where the raccoons were at, while detectives got on their phones, calling up criminal informants, bribing them with money or telling them that they would talk to the District Attorney about lucrative plea bargains for any upcoming trials they might have. Chief Bogo was busy explaining everything to Nick.
"Wilde, because you're personally involved in this case, I can't let you work it," he said with a sigh. "I'm sorry, but the fact that you're brother and sister are the victims in this means that your ability to act rationally and objectively might be severely compromised."
Nick knew arguing would be pointless. "I understand, Chief. Could I take some time off work then?"
"Given the circumstances, I'd say that would be a wise decision," observed the Cape Buffalo. "Go try and comfort your parents and be with Judy right now."
"I will," said Nick. "I'm going to head out now."
"Alright," said Bogo. "Try and keep a positive outlook. We're using every resource at our disposal to catch these two and bring back your siblings."
Nick made his way towards the front entrance, but before he left, he approached Jack and Billy.
"Meet me at my house at noon," said Nick. "I have something I need to talk to you about."
Billy and Jack nodded, saying they would be there.
Nick finally managed to get some sleep, if for no other reason than the fact that he was absolutely exhausted. He woke up around eleven and saw that Judy was still sleeping. She had been so stressed out earlier that she had a difficult time finding sleep. Nick quietly left their room, going downstairs into the living room. He sat on the couch, staring out the front window, waiting for Jack and Billy to show up. Sure enough, both the wolf and coyote, driving separately, showed up in his driveway right at noon. Nick went to the door to let them in. He didn't want to risk them knocking or ringing the doorbell and waking up Judy. He didn't want her to hear what he had to say to them.
"Hey," said Nick, opening the door. "Thanks for coming."
"You get any sleep?" asked Jack.
"A little," said Nick. "How about we go into the guest room back here to talk about this?"
The wolf and coyote nodded, quietly walking into the guest room. Nick shut the door behind them. He bit his lower lip. "So, did Bogo let you guys have the day off?"
"Yeah," said Billy. "Said we needed the rest."
Nick walked around the room, trying to find the right words. "You know . . . I understand why the department won't let me work this case--appearance of impropriety and the chance that I won't act objectively. As a cop, I understand that. But I can't think like a cop right now. My parents were beaten to a pulp, then my little brother and sister were dragged from their beds, probably at gun point. I think about them screaming and crying, wanting my parents to save them . . . and I get pissed, I mean really pissed. At first I was afraid, but now I've never been so angry in all my life. I can't just sit by and hope that the ZPD and FBI are going to rescue my siblings. I have to do something, and I'd like you guys to help me."
Jack stepped up to the fox. "Nick, you're my best friend in the world. Your father helped save my life and I'll do everything I can to repay that debt. I'm in."
"What about you Billy? I know you don't have a personal stake in this."
"The hell I don't," said the coyote. "You two are my friends, and a fellar ain't nothin' if hedon't help his friends out. I'm with ya, partner."
"Good," said Nick. He went to the closet in the room. Opening the door, he pulled out a Mossberg pump action 12 gauge shotgun, a Remmington 700 rifle with a scope and a Desert Eagle .50 Action Express pistol. "Let's go hunt those bastards down."
