The white compass chapter 3: escape

Before our characters can settle down, a knock comes to their door...

(Sorry that this is a really short chapter, the next will be longer...)


"Alright, it's settled then, your official name is Fayne..."

I rose from my pillow to fetch my dagger from my coat, quickly rifling through its many hidden and visible pockets, searching for the small Sharpening rod.

"Oh my..." I murmured with fear, just loud enough.

"What is wrong, master?" Asked Fayne, with a concerned look on her face.

"I haven't told you why I'm here, have I?" I said, putting on my heavy coat, helmet and gauntlets.

"No, master..." She answered, cocking her hear to the side.

"I, am part of an organization of people, seeking to free your kind, but to get into our base of operations we need to show a pin, or say a codeword whichever works, however... I've dropped my pin, and if anyone finds it, they will surely recognize it's symbol. So we must leave. Now." I said bluntly, pushing the heavy desk againgst the door, barricading it shut.

She leapt to her feet and helped me pick up the items such as the jar of healing paste and the collar and chain that had been lying in the corner and quickly cram them into my pack.

But without warning, a panicked, three-hit knock came resonating through the door.

"Oi, sir... I just want to talk!" Yelled the the innkeeper from the other side of the door, he, no doubt, had several other armed men on the other side, ready to separate my head from my neck and bring it to the king.

I turned and brought a single finger to my lips, signaling silence before opening the window.

"Have you ever jumped out of a window?" I asked in the most quiet speaking voice I could muster, prompting Fayne to shake her head from side to side.

"Aim for the hay cart." Were my last words to her before promptly diving through the window, into the darkness below...
