Chapter 3 - Angels Fall First
#3 of Valkyrie - Pegasus - Book 3 - The Light of the End
Location: Angel's Rest Fleet Yards â€" Alexandria
Two months later...
Colin reported to one of the stern faced Admirals for the Alexandrian military. The Admiral was wearing a distinctive blue uniform which was an interesting contrast between the black uniform that Colin wore from Terra. He entered into the evaluation room with all three admirals, a wolf, a cheetah and raven all looking up at him as he entered.
Since the destruction of Terra, Alexandrian forces had sent out an expedition to determine the strength of the Asgard and assess reprisal attacks. When the Alexandrian fleet arrived at Terra's remains, they discovered that the huge white portal seen when Terra exploded had actually expanded and seemed to be feed off of three energy pulses from three separate locations far in the universe.
As for the Asgard, apart from the wreckage of Raven's Nest Shipyard which considered of just a few docking pylons and hull pieces, including not much else there was no sign of them. This had confirmed to the Alexandrians that the war was over and that the mortal Anthromorphia were indeed safe for another day.
As time went on, life was slowly returning to normal on Alexandria who continued to remember their sister planet that had senselessly that been destroyed. Alexandrian scientists at the scene seemed baffled by the strange white anomaly and concluded officially that a dark matter white hole had imploded inside the core of Terra.
Colin watched the Admirals as they continued to glide over him with their sharp eyes. He felt extremely uncomfortable as he was being probed by these men, it would have been easier if they had just asked him to take off all his clothes.
"These psychological profiles do not look very promising" spoke the Raven in a raspy and shrill voice. He looked at the other two, his feathers were jet black and somehow very ominous for an member of the Alexandrian Military. "It seems that you have partaking in some rather... bizarre hobbies Captain Colin."
Colin stared at the table and watched the Raven talking through his small beak, he suddenly felt the urge to just snap it off from his head. "So...?" asked Colin.
It was apparent from the way he looked that Colin had not taken very good care of himself . He had still not coped with the death of Miles and the others at the Battle of Terra almost two months ago. His eyes were tired and baggy, they somehow contained a very different stare from the confident commander of the Valkyrie, his hair was unwashed along with his fur and was extremely scruffy. In fact, he looked like he had been dragged through a hedge backwards.
"Orbital skydiving without an oxygen or safety field is a sure-fire way to get yourself killed..." continued the Raven looking down at the reports. "Do you have a death-wish Captain?"
"Well obviously not... otherwise I would not be here." snapped Colin as he rubbed the back of his head.
"Never-the-less" interjected the Raven, while skimming through the pages of the report that he held in-between his talon-like hands. "You have been visiting a lot of bars on our Lunar colony..."
Colin sighed with annoyance. "Do you have a point?"
"Our point is..." continued the Wolf who stared at the Raven, nodded and then continued. "You took the death of your comrades pretty badly... you have been drinking and we even have reports of you paying for hookers..."
"No-no.. NOT TRUE!" shouted Colin, stamping his feet in protest. "I understand that I have been a little... well... not here recently... but... I am dealing and no I don't want to talk about it with some fucking psychological bull-shitter!"
"Very well" sighed the Raven. "Well we have ordered you here to inform you as from today... You are no longer Commander of the Terra Valkyrie project... You have a problem Captain, deal with it the best way you can..."
"WHAT!?" shouted Colin immediately in protest. "You can't... I've put so much work into this project... The new Valkyrie is almost finished... You c-c-can't!"
"We can Captain!" shouted the Raven. "And we just have... pack your things. We have made a note in the log that from this date... you are being stripped of your rank."
Colin could not believe that this was happening. He had been working on the repairs and development of the new Valkyrie for almost two months, ever since he convinced the Queen to renew the project and create a new class of Valkyrie starship. To him, he had no problem... he just enjoyed his drinking, it made him feel numb... so the pain would stop.
"Surrender your insignia and your sidearm Captain..." said the wolf, almost nervous, his paw hovered over a panic button positioned under the table. Colin took off his gold badge from the collar of his uniform and placed it on the table along with a gun. He saluted the office and turned to exit the room.
"Good luck Colin" said the Raven with a short, bitter smile.
"Fuck you" muttered Colin as he left the room, a tear slowly falling from his eye.
Location: Angel's Rest Shipyard â€" Crew Quarters
"Do you think Captain Colin will be happy with these new shield modifications" chirped Blackfire in excitement as he walked down the corridor with Ultraviolet trailing next to him. Ultraviolet smiled, she had decided to keep her vision a secret in order not to panic the Queen who had already worked hard to prevent a mass hysteria about reprisals from the Asgard for assisting the rebels.
Blackfire was another story entirely, after defeating Obsidian he had been left to die on Raven's Nest Shipyard. During that time, he had fallen in unconsciousness and had a rather strange dream. A dream about seeing a bright ball of fire levitating on a pedestal, such a powerful substance that it could burn the sky. When he awoke however, he appeared to be safe and sound aboard the one of the surviving vessels. He assumed that the crew of the vessel must have teleported him out of there but he was not so sure... He remembered feeling feathers... maybe an angel?
"I am sure he will be very impressed with them." said Ultraviolet, her magnificent violet silk robe flowing behind her. "Eh.... what do they do again?"
Blackfire sighed as he looked up from the small hand-held computer that he was using. "Well, last time we took the Valkyrie out... it came back in pieces. These shield modifications will allow us to... well... become a god for a few seconds.
Ultraviolet stared at the dragon as if the vacuum of space had made him a little mad. "Become a god?" she asked sarcastically.
Blackfire nodded in excitement. "Well the shield grid is like a bubble that protects the ship.. right...?"
Ultraviolet nodded.
"Well... these shields are like a honeycomb that will protect and absorb heat from the nearest star... giving it a limitless energy source. Now... with this sort of energy source, the field powering the shield will have an amazing effect with the ship's hull..."
Ultraviolet sighed and felt sorry that she had asked. "Just explain it to the captain Blacky" she said smiling at the over-exuberant dragon who she felt like he really needed to be shoved out of the airlock.
"Well I was telling you though UV" he asked.
"But you don't need to tell me... trust me..." she said as she approached the door to Colin's quarters. The corridors aboard this space station were again ordained with beautiful stone murals along the wall.
"Captain?" shouted Blackfire as he rapped on the door with force in his excitement. Ultraviolet did not know if she should just jump out of an airlock now. She brought her hands up to her muzzle.
"Very subtle Blacky..." she sighed sarcastically.
There was a loud crash from behind the door which made both of them jump. They both looked at each other in surprise. Maybe Colin was in danger...?
Quick as possible, Ultraviolet put her hand out to the door controls and attempted to open it. "Shi... I mean... Dammit!" she said, attempting not to swear. "It's locked..."
"State the obvious UV... you get 10 points for that" chuckled Blackfire as he opened the door after pressing a few controls and both of them hurried inside.
Colin's quarters were a complete mess, there was glass all over the floor and tables that were overturned. Ultraviolet hurried through and spotted Colin slumping into the room, a bottle of Terran Star Whisky in his hand and his gun in the other.
"Captain?" asked Blackfire as he stepped over the broken glass on the floor.
"Welcome!" smiled Colin lopsidedly. Both Ultraviolet and Blackfire could both see that he had been drinking. "Ah... my motley crew, what news for up-deck? Awrrrrr!"
Ultraviolet had to stand on Blackfire's foot to stop him from laughing. "What are you doing Colin?" she asked.
"Oh... nothing!" shouted Colin as he took a swig out of the bottle. "Just playing captain... thought it might back you laugh."
Ultraviolet stared at Colin with confusion. "But you are a captain..."
"NOT ANYMORE!" shouted Colin before taking another swig from the bottle. "Not thanks to those twats of Admirals... they relieved me..."
"We have all been worried about you... Me, Blackfire, Munchy even the Queen" said Ultraviolet. "You just need a break..."
"So.. you knew!?" shouted Colin, he pointed the hand with the gun lopsided at her, swaying slightly. "You knew... they were gonna take my job eh..?"
"It's only temporary just till you recover. Admiral..."
"HE'S DEAD!?" shouted Colin, waving the gun around frantically. "Recover! Ha! The venerated tight-ass Captain Colin is dead... I'm nothing..." He took the gun and opened his mouth putting the gun inside it.
"Captain no!" shouted Blackfire who rushed in Ultraviolet and easily pulled the gun from his mouth.
Ultraviolet grabbed Colin into a tight embrace as she feel him fall into her, collapsing into tears. It was a terrible sight, a man destroyed...
"It's... my fault!" Colin collapsed onto the floor and cried into Ultraviolet's arms. "I killed them!... Why did he have to die!?"
The scene was heartbreaking, Colin crying into Ultraviolet's arms, his sobbing all the built up emotion that had come from the death of his closest friends. More then a friend...
"Miles..." he whimpered softly. "I... loved you... Forgive me..."
The whole station began to violently shake, the was an explosion in the hall way. "What... the hell?" thought Ultraviolet. Then she began to feel strange, her blood froze as she saw her visions of Alexandria burning...
"Oh no..."
