Dragon Bonded: Tales of Penelo Lookens
the squeal to my published book 'dragon bonded' which I need to make revisions on that as it is like this story. (purposely not editing it) red/blue colors are her split souls talking to one another. Red represents Penelo and blue Lookens. Together they are each individual souls inhabiting a single body. One of a human and another of a dragon. Foregoing the backstory, she is on a journey of adulthood and is spending almost one thousand years (or turning one by the age of dragons) On this part she came to a village of people that are secretly werewolves. enjoy, like/fav if you like enjoyed this.
I did a major edit to have this a bit easier to read.
It was easy for Penelo to slip out of the city without being followed. Having the ability to fly on command helped with that and Lookens was feeling cooped up. After renewing her travel rations she headed south. She traveled just inside the boarder from the western kingdom searching for metal smiths that could sew steel as if thread. During that time Penelo created a spool of silver thread with some of the best runes she could come up with without bloodletting it. It was strong, flexible, durable and everlasting. She was pleased with the work and noted how she made it for improvement and reproduction.
She was in a highland area, windy over a barren landscape, when she noticed a village in the cavern and entered it slowly. She noted right away that the place does not get strangers often as she entered the only place with a business sign. The place was empty and was a general store and inn in one. Penelo takes to one of the seats and waits half an hour for the man in the other room to notice her. " Oh, sorry sorry. It is the off season and travelers are rare. What can I get you?"
Penelo dug into her purse for a copper coin. " Spirits and cold if you got them."
The man goes back in the back. The notice of three children did not escape her attention either. They were looking threw a window to her right. She noticed them talking as a bare chested man came behind them and gave each a good knock on the head as he sent them away and they returned to the window as the bare chested man entered. The man came in too late to not be noticed and set the bottle on the table. " I want no trouble HoShine. It business."
The bare chested man nods and the other left the room quickly out the front. Penelo gets her cup out of her cloak and opens the bottle and pours herself a drink. " I'm the village's protector. What are you doing here stranger?"
He grabs the hood of her cloak and she grabbed his arm. He was stronger than most mortal men she came across and both slimmer and younger than he should be for his age as well. There was something with him. " I nearly took the arm of the last man to touch my hood. Do you want to lose yours?"
The bare chested man slowly loosened his grip and retreated his arm and Penelo let go. She then lowered her hood. The man was very surprised. " Your hot!"
Penelo sighed. " And tired and hungry and you scared the other guy away. Do you know how to cook? If not leave me alone."
After a moment to compose himself the man slammed his hand on the table. " I'll ask again. Why are you here? Hunters only come here when the rare pelt appear out of the desert. You are four months early."
Penelo became suspicious. " To drink then eat and sleep before I leave. I'm new to the region but found it easier to travel at night. There is a full moon tonight and will move on shortly after it gets dark." Penelo had the hand that grabbed his arm back under her cloak as the man backed away and put a hand behind his back. " HoShine stop this madness before she kills you."
Penelo kept an eye on the man as she turned the other to the entrance noticed the first man with a very much older man covered in his own hair from his head. The old man walked into the building. " But elder."
The old man pointed his stick at the younger. " No, but to me. This dragon would rip threw you and cast her wrath on all of us."
Penelo gripped the blades in her hand tighter. The younger man wordlessly and in a state of confusion pointed to the old man then to Penelo and seemed to speak without any words. The old man lowered his stick. " Yes, a lone northerner woman, who is strange to find as a hunter anywhere but around here near unthinkable, wonders in not only during the off season but on the day before the night of the full moon. Then the fact you did not immediately overpower her. Could she be anything but one of the legendary dragons? There has been rumor they have been stirring up north and recently several have been sighted not far west of here."
Penelo reveals her hidden hand with the blades and sets them on the table before taking the bottle and filling her cup again. " It is such a pain when someone figures it out. First I have to determine how much you really know. Determine if you are a threat. Report to the others. All I wanted was something good to drink, something filing to eat and someplace cool to rest."
Penelo sighs and turns over to Lookens as she takes the drink. She slings the cup up and down to quickly dry it before putting it back in her cloak. She takes the bottle and starts chugging it strait before emptying it completely. She then puts it back on the table. " I hate the heat. So please tell me something to convince me to ignore this incident or something."
Lookens then notices the men on the ground on their hands and knees. She puts her hand to her forehead. " This is going to be one of those places."
It took her a good five minutes to get them to their feet again. After that they wanted to get the party started early but Lookens suggested they wait till it cools further and they did not question her. They however did talk her into going outside in her dragon form and walk to the elders tent. She was thankful his tent was a lot cooler than the general store and immediately took off her cloak and her armor. Her undershirt was covered in sweat and the sudden cooled moisture made her breast firm and showy. The bare chested man looked at them amazed as her golden ooze started spreading over her body to clean the sweat. Lookens gets into a locked box with gold coins and got two out and the ooze absorbed them out of her hand. The old man gave the younger a good whack on the back of his head with his stick. " Show is over HoShine. Be more respectful to the honored guest."
Lookens folds her cloak around her armor and sits on a stool. " I am glad he did not try to grab my ass. Most men try and find one of my feet gripping their groins. Other dran I do spare after they apologize."
The old man strokes his beard. " Dran? I have not heard the term."
Lookens sighs. " Means not full. As in I'm not a full dragon."
The man strokes his beard even more. " I see. So you are an initiate dragon?"
Lookens put her hand to her head again. " If that is the term you wish to use."
The other man turned to his elder. " An initiate elder? The stories tell of a full dragon."
The elder continues to stroke his beard. " Do not be too sure. The legend has been passed down for a long time. What I have been taught and what I teach are not complete the same. Some gets lost with memory or more with growing imaginations."
Lookens interrupted. " Tell your tale."
The elder stopped stroking his beard. " It will be told tonight during our festival. If you grace us for a night."
Lookens considers it a moment. They have shown much more respect to her as a dran than as a human. It made her suspicious they want something from her. " So I get to rest here and get something good to eat and be guest of honor at your gathering. I get to rest till the next night and then I get to leave correct?"
HoShine looked at his elder worried. " Unless something happens then yes, that is correct."
Lookens squinted her eyes. " As in what happening?"
The elder raises his shoulders. Lookens knew she should leave the village right then but it was hot and her supply of water was low. Lookens slowly nods. " If you care to rest honored dragon HoShine will see to your needs. I got to get ready for tonight. I was about to enter the sacred cave when I was told of you on this great day." Lookens yawns lightly. " Do whatever you need to for a ceremony as if I was not here. I'm going to take a nap. Bring a bowl of water and set it on my bundle of cloak and armor."
Lookens gestures to the small lump on her chest between her breasts. " In case this ooze gets thirsty."
When Lookens woke up it smelled of some masturbation. Not heavy enough to be done around her but perhaps recently by the one watching her. Lookens raised up annoyed of the smell and found the bowl empty. She considered that a good sign. She has found the ooze needs water as much as it needs to eat gold and lifted the bowl before getting her sword and checking it before unwrapping her cloak and seeing to her armor. She seemed pleased as she put it back on her until it was like it was when she entered the village. Except her cloak was folded back like a cape between her wings. " When is the party?"
HoShine turned away nervous. " I'm sorry the party was canceled."
Lookens grabs the tent's flap and HoShine was going to stop her but was too late. She came out to a village of gray furred werewolves being lined up by a bunch of black furred ones. She looks at HoShine and with the moonlight pouring in he was changing to a silver fur. Their presence did not go unnoticed as one of the black werewolves hissed in her direction. She grabbed her sword ready to defend herself but stopped as another black one came from the night and darkness to appear in front of them. " So the dragons finally came back."
Suddenly the loud one howled and all the black ones vanished. HoShine moved past her and moved to the worried faces. He instantly could tell something was wrong. Lookens grabbed his wrist and let out a barking yell at her and Lookens let out a low town growl before speaking. " You! Talk! Now!"
HoShine tried to break her grip. " Let me find out who they took first."
Lookens reluctantly let him go. She was concerned with the demon but understood he would not talk till his worry is satisfied. As if nothing happened the other werewolves started repairing the damage done to their village and started lighting some fires. Soon there was tables and food out that was obviously prepared for the night. Soon the large silver wolf returned. He had tears in his eyes. " Ask anything you want to know initiate."
Lookens sighs. " I follow two rules above all others away from my home. One I do not greatly meddle in the affairs of mortals and two I kill demons that personally plague mortals. This I ask you very carefully and you must answer the same."
Lookens speaks slowly and plainly. " Has the big one that came to me ever killed or directly took any to your knowledge?"
HoShine became hysterical. " Did you not see what his pack did? They terrorized my people. They kill any stupid enough to challenge them and take whoever may become strong enough to challenge them and converts them to their pack."
Lookens sighs. " Let me ask this again because you did not clearly understand. Did their leader, their alpha, ever to your knowledge, take or kill one of your people. If your next word is not yes then I can not help you. Think carefully because I will leave if you do not say yes as your next word and I will know if you lie." HoShine thought carefully and lowered his head but before he answered her an old shaggy wolf moved to them that been listening. He had a familiar stick. " One time I have seen him kill one of our village."
Lookens turns to the werewolf formed elder. " Are you sure? You must tell me every detail."
The elder leaned on his staff heavyhearted. " Of course honored dragon. I will tell you to let HoShine morn the loss of his half brother."
Lookens grabs the elders stick and her knuckles popped to her grip. " Do not try to guilt trip me or manipulate me again. It is obvious this is a problem your people have bore a long time. I could just kill you all and let mortal heros kill the mid demon and his ilk. I rid a demon and to my people my hands are clean."
The elder gulped. " Of course honored dragon. We are truly sorry for trapping you in our problems and you can feast all you desire."
Lookens lets go of the stick. " Set up a seat for me in over there." Lookens points to where everyone set up the food and is gesturing to the middle. " To the left of me I need a table with food. Meaty and rich and with bread as well. I want clean water and no spirits or any other type of booze. To the front of me I need another table or a set of them that measure to a length as I am and is as wide twice as much. To my right I need a long table and anything your people have as a weapon. I do not care if it is a rusted up bread knife. If it can or could at one point be used to bash, cut, bleed or break someone I want it on the table."
It took a good thirty minutes for the village to organize the tables and for most of anything that could be used as a weapon be gathered. Most of it was useless when new in a fight and most of it was worn out and dull. The only real thing to Lookens was the set of claw gloves HoShine had. They were silver and obvious dragon craftsmanship. Likely passed down from generation to generation since the dark days. She could restore them to glory but that would take strength and time she did not have for them. They were better used as they were with who they belonged to. " You elder speak. Who did he kill and how?"
Lookens examined her sword and put it to the side before digging into her cloak for another weapon. " Twenty years ago the demon wolf had grown complacent with the size of his pack and came less often to cull ours. We managed to hide several strong and younger warriors. When our numbers nearly totaled them we set a trap. Their demonic master had made them truly monstrous and we lost all our warriors but HoBright but he was the strongest and proudest of them. He came like death in the night. Here only for a few seconds but long enough to see who did the deed. HoShines father was butchered and every child from the age up to ten was gone. HoShine was conceived the day before."
Lookens wondered why the gap in age between the older generation and the silver wolf. That would explain that. " Pride was your fathers downfall. Those that are boastful against the demons they make very public examples of. In this case however I am here."
Lookens turns to the food and eats an entire plate and follows it with a large bite of bread and then flushes it down with a pitcher of water before turning back to her cloak and takes out a bag of poisoned spikes. They would be useless and sets them down and takes her sword and clears off the table to her right. She sets the bag of spikes on the cleared spot. She then starts examining each of the small throwing knives she has. " You with the silver fur. You look a lot stronger than the others. Tell me can you fight."
HoShine backed up slightly. " Me? I can hold my own." Lookens turns back to another plate of food after finishing her exam of her knives and repeated what she did with the previous one. " Short sword or daggers?"
HoShire picks up the silver claws and puts them on. " Can any others fight?"
The elder shakes his head. Lookens sighs as she takes the short swords and daggers out of her cloaks holders and sets them on the table to the right. All that was left was a chain she made while resting after the wryven incident to replace the one she left behind in the coliseum, her bow and four arrows and Lookens was not sure how the chain would help her except bind the demon with but that may let her get in a kill blow. The bow and arrows gave her a solid weapon ranged option that can be increased with techniques. Which all she was skilled at was splitting the missile into smaller bits to cover more area and numbers and precision of her shots. She takes them out of their holds and sets them beside her sword. She then starts digging into the pockets for any lose food or money or other items that may have been left behind. She sets whatever she got out on the right table beside the swords and daggers. " Elder I suggest any of your fit fight as well. How many are their numbers?" The elder set his stick against the table and took one of the swords. " You have four swords. I will give them to four that are the strongest."
Lookens turns back to the food and turns back with the pitcher in hand. " Tell him who. You got a legend to tell me. And tell me their numbers."
" It was during the dark times where the brightest of days were darker than the darkest of nights now. Great battles were won and lost each day. Only things around was death and destruction. Our tribe was part of a collective of a powerful demon. Who would engage the mighty dragons and titans of man and be able to say, 'I am your equal' and not lie.' He who is now forgotten in time and memory. When the mighty one fell any of the lieutenants of the great demon left took what little of them left to command and fled the burning rivers of dragon breath left in their wake. Some demons chose to hide in the deep earth as their forces were destroyed. Others fled into the waters to the south. Only to return when the dragons went quiet. Yet the dragons did not vanish from the world. They kept heralds and familiars to restore the land. The great gray fur tribe became one of these heralds. To keep and restore the land to health. To this day we do as we are told in secret. Till the mighty ones return to us again as if needed."
The elder seemed weakened from the story beginning and Lookens sighed as she stopped cleaning her sword with a cloth. " This story sounds too accurate to be told from elder to elder."
The elder raised up on his stick. " I am getting too old for this. Come with me to the sacred cave. It will tell you all you need to know."
Lookens put her sword on her back and put her cloaks on her shoulder before being led to the cliff side behind the village. The cave had natural glowing insects all around inside it and the way was clear for them as they came to the core where the walls were lined with ancient texts. Lookens opened her mouth surprised. She had only heard of such a place. The chamber was as bright as if it was day inside. The old elder led her to a wall with a different form of text. " These characters are passed down from elder to elder. No one till you has entered here and not been the village elder."
Lookens puts her hand to the wall and begins reading the story properly. " So far your story is accurate but the tribe was actually called the silver fur tribe not gray."
Lookens points to a set of characters that have been slightly damaged to water running down the caves wall. " The older languages had strange ways of describing some things. As such they numbered colors when being written. Color eleven is gray but color seventeen is silver. Combine that with how the two look similar in contrast and there you go."
Lookens reads the legend a little more and stops. " You got to be kidding me. The great silver protector saves the mighty dragon and he makes her his wife for one night. Come on. No dignified dragon would ever admit being vulnerable."
Lookens reads a little more. " Well that does explain why she came in the first place. She was in love with the silver wolf chief at the time." The elder moved to where her hand was resting over a portion that had fallen away. " How do you know this? That section was destroyed before my grandfathers time."
Lookens stops her reading and turns to the werewolf. " Oh, I am not seeing what is written. I am hearing it told to me. Even among the dragons these caves are rarely known of. If I had ten thousand years I could not hear a fraction of the stories told here. But this story is important. It is one not only told in the cave but written several times and is in fact the bases of it's existence."
Lookens turns back to the wall and continues and does not read a word out loud again. She lowers her hand slowly. " I see the events told are not finished. The story tells of my coming and a choice. The results of this choice will decide the fate of the land and village and myself included."
She turns her back to the elder. " I believe in controlling my own fate, but I'm not against having a prophecy on my side either."
As Lookens was leaving she turns back to the wall. " Interesting indeed. I must return here after this fighting is done."
Then she left. The elder followed her.
Lookens exited the cave and saw HoShine looking at the four picked and given swords. He saw the initiate dragon and started his speech. " You four are our best and strongest fighters. You each have ventured out in the world an adventured in your youths. Each of you chose wives and had children knowing what very well could happen and did happen. SuShade you had a daughter taken three years ago likely a year from being too old. LiWind you had two sons. Finally a dragon has come to us and finally we can say no more. Finally we can say you can not have our children."
Suddenly there was an evil howl and the torch fires started to dim. Only leaving the central fire bright. Lookens drew her sword and it shone bright and the torches blazed brighter than they were before showing dozen and more black furred werewolves. The smallest of which stood beside the the largest who's form was darker and more deformed than the others. " Do you think she can help you? She can do nothing. Nothing!"
HoShine looked at Lookens, she was pushing the old werewolf back behind her with her off hand. " What is he talking about?" Lookens sighs. " Ancient rules of combat among immortals. When two immortals engage in lethal combat with the use of mortals on each side then the commanders. That would be me and him. Will let our forces do battle. However if one commander chooses a champion among his forces or an elite force equal to one to one thousand soldiers under their command. Then a champions challenge is presented. In which a fair contest is made of champions and elites and whichever side stands defeated must yield to the victors. HoShine you are the captain. You are my champion here."
The wolf demon laughs in a howl. " Do you think it will be that simple. I out number your forces three to one." Lookens then quickly says and interrupts him. " You have three champions then." The demon opens his mouth but keeps quiet. He points to one of his minions and signals him to come. " Withdraw your other forces dragon."
Lookens sets her sword point down in the dirt between her feet. " Clear the tables and stand aside."
The four that were slightly cowering behind HoShine quickly grabbed the tables and brought them with them. Leaving only one that could not be got. As soon as they were behind Lookens the demon spoke. " Sik'em."
Instantly the black werewolf went after HoShine in a feral rage. HoShine readied himself and put the silver claw blades in the neck of the black werewolf and black blood covered his chest as the mass hitting him knocked him back. It took him a moment to recover and another of the black werewolves were already coming at him. The first one he knew he got lucky and was ready. This time he was not as a chunk of his flesh was tore from his side but HoShine brought his free claw blades into the back of the second black werewolf. Hoshine had to let go of the claw blades in order to free his hands for use again and held his bleeding side. " What no surprise attack again?"
The demon looked at the small werewolf to his side and laughed evil. " You want a surprise. HoLight go kill your older brother."
The small black werewolf rushed forward almost eager for the fight. Going from two legs to all four limbs in his run and at the right moment leaped over the height of HoShine's head and landed on his chest, tearing and clawing the entire time. HoShine quickly got his hand under the small black werewolves neck and memories of holding his brother similarly right after he was born came to mind. One of the eyes were still silver as well. HoShine noticed a scar on the right paw where he was scratched when play got too rough a few months ago. There was still some silver fur in the bunches of black. HoShine shed a tear. " HoLight!"
The small werewolf started clawing into his arm instead of his chest in hopes to get free. HoShine did not feel the pain as he brung his brother to his chest and held him tightly. So tight that the small werewolf started to struggle to break free. As it's energy drained it stopped struggling and HoShine made a slow move behind the neck. " I'll make it quick little brother. I'll set you free." There was a loud pop and HoShine fell to his knees and howled in sorrow as the body he held black color faded into a bright silver. A silver that matched the one holding it.
Lookens was in front of HoShine instantly to block the demons strike. " You dare intervene!" Lookens grabs the maim of HoShine and brought him with her by dragging him to where the others of his people. He was not conscious when she dropped him while still weary of the demon. " Three champions you sent. Three he defeated. Your champions are dead while mine is not."
The demon backed away slightly. " Not yet. I count this a draw."
Lookens moves back in the middle of the circle of black werewolves. " Want to go there, then lets go there? Forget custom. Bring it on demon."
As soon as she said the words the minions of the demon attacked and Lookens drew her dagger as she took a pose that looked like she was in the shape of a dragon by extending her right leg and extending her sword parallel to it. She then raised up and yelled. " Level one. Wing of the dragon!"
Her sword glowed blinding bright and all the demons minions fell around her with numerous cuts. " Level two. Claw of the dragon."
Lookens lunged with her sword but the demon moved in such speed as well that she only delivered a small scratch. " Level three. Scale of the dragon." Lookens wings folded around her as she starts to receive several blows. Each of them would have been devastating if she did not protect herself. As the skills effect started to fade she knew she was going to have to go into her reserves now. " Level four. Essence of the dragon."
Lookens extended her wings wide to create a shockwave all around her that knocked the demon back but the moment between the skills being turned over the demon grabbed her sword and pulled it from her grasp. He stumbled lightly as he threw it behind him. " Not so strong now are you?"
Lookens unguarded the dagger from around her arm and pointed it to the demon. " Level five. Breath of the dragon."
Suddenly a torment of fire shot out from the end of her dagger at the demon and covered him in melting flames. " Level six. Fang of the dragon."
Lookens lunges into the standing flaming body with her dagger held by both her hands. Where it landed it produced a chomp out of the demons body as if a full adult dragon bit into him themselves before pulling it out and causing the effect of the demons body being ripped apart. Lookens walked out of the cindered ground back toward the villagers but fell to a knee exhausted. The flames behind her died and Lookens struggled to get back to both her feet and turn back to the heavily injured wolf demon. " I'm surprised young dragon you had so much power but you are now at your limits."
Lookens sighs knowing it is true. She had used her full reserves and only had her direct life force left and she could barely stand using that. Lookens puts her dagger back in the strap around her chest and starts going for her silver knives. She was a lot slower than before but the demons injuries hampered him so much that he could barely dodge a couple of them. As soon as she was out she had her bow and arrows out ready for use. " You really are getting desperate dragon."
Lookens takes the first arrow and puts it in a shoulder blade. Without using her remaining energy she would have to hope the silver would do as it was made to do. The next two arrows she puts in the demons chest as it did not even try to dodge anymore. Lookens sets the last arrow not even sure she could pull it or not. We are in trouble. I got an idea. Wait! What? Lookens drops the bow and takes the arrow like a spear or a lance. " Land on which my ancestors once bled and fought on you. Grant me your strength."
The demon laughs in a howl. " Now I know you are desperate dragon. No dragon has ever fought a demon on these lands." The demon was suddenly content on watching Lookens make a fool of herself. " I call on the great king of the spear and the great king of the lance to help me."
The demon became surprised as he heard a horse in the distance. He suddenly charges Lookens in haste. " I call on the line of my mother Boris of the great defender of the spear."
Suddenly a phantom of a large armored knight with a shield as large as his body and a spear four times as long stood between the two. The demon seemed to collide with an invisible wall. " I call on the line of my father Lancelot of the great charger of the lance."
The demon started to turn to run as a great white steed with another phantom knight on it charged forward. As if practiced Lookens lunged forward with the arrow and connected at the same point as the cavalier's lance did and it ripped the body in two. Lookens never had seen a demon die before but did know to expect what happened next as it turned to cinder and ash. Lookens chuckled pleased she killed her first demon as she fell to the side.
