Frysco stars in this adventure short story where the gryphon stumbles upon an ancient cave marked with unusual runes. Perhaps there is great treasure within? What he finds is not exactly what the intrepid explorer expected.

Commissioned story for Frysco

The days of intrepid explorers had long gone, as much a relic of history as those they had dug up from the ground. But sometimes, just sometimes, there was a monumental discovery as some unknown tomb was found for the first time in centuries.

As Frysco stared down into the gaping chasm beneath him, he wondered if he was on the verge of such a discover himself. His heart hammered in his chest as he glanced back through the thick foliage, back to where he and his team had set up camp. The gryphon had only gone for a quick piss before almost falling down the ravine that by all rights shouldn’t even be here. It hadn’t appeared on any of their mapping programs, but the evidence was right before his eyes.

But that wasn’t the most exciting thing. No simple ravine would have filled Frysco with such anticipation. No, there was a crack in the cliffs right at the ravine floor. A crack that appeared to have hieroglyphic writing around the edge, akin to that which the ancient civilisation living here had used. So few relics from that era still existed.

For a moment Frysco debated calling for the rest of the team, before deciding against it. He might as well check to see there was actually a discovery to be made. No point bringing everyone over if there wasn’t anything down there. He didn’t even think about claiming the glory of discovery all for himself, oh no, not at all. He simply wasn’t that kind of gryphon. At least, that’s what he tried to convince himself. And yet, dreams of riches and glory filled his mind even before he started to clamber down the steep ravine walls.

The gryphon was careful with his descent. He had no safety harness on, so one slip from this height could prove fatal. The cliff walls were too close, and the winds too changeable to risk his wings. He tested his weight thoroughly before each movement, digging his clawed feet into the crevasses before reaching down with his hands. Soon even thoughts of glory were gone from his mind, his arms shaking with exertion as he eased himself down.

“Gah, nearly there…” he muttered to himself, before letting out an undignified squawk as he lost his grip on the rock. For a moment he was helpless, unbalanced as he fell away from the cliff. His right foot slipped, followed by his left until he was clinging onto the rock with just one feathered hand, and even that was slipping. He fell…

Only to land on his feet after a drop of barely a foot. He held his arms out to regain his balance, blinking as he looked up the cliff he’d just clambered down. He clacked his beak and shrugged his shoulders, trying to look like he’d meant that all along. Even without an audience he still wanted to make sure he looked good in whatever he did.

Turning around, Frysco looked around for the small crack he’d spied from the top of the cliffs. It wasn’t too far away, and he hopped over the litter of rocky debris that covered the ravine floor. As he had thought, the crack was surrounded by a multitude of the undeciphered hieroglyphs the ancient people had used. No attempt at cracking the meaning behind them had ever been successful. Not even a single word had ever been translated with any degree of certainty.

Tracing his finger over the mysterious symbols, Frysco stopped and paused. He recognised some of them, but most were unknown to even his expert eyes. One symbol was more prevalent than others. It had faded too much to be certain, but it appeared to be a snake or worm. He had never seen that one before, and to his mind that indicated that a great prize was perhaps waiting for him inside.

For the last time, Frysco glanced up to the edge of the ravine. He shook his head and smirked. He wasn’t going to share this with anyone. It was all going to be his. Patting his hip to make sure he had his torch on him still, he ducked his head and slipped inside the crack.

It was almost completely pitch dark inside, with the only light coming from the small crack the gryphon had come through. He could see nothing more than a few feet into the cave, but the slow drip of water echoed, giving Frysco the impression that he was stood in a large, open area.

Pulling his torch from his hip, the gryphon flicked it on and shone the bright beam around the cavern. The light gleamed off the wet stone walls. More hieroglyphs adorned these walls, all of them unknown to the gryphon’s eyes. The floor beneath his clawed feet was surprisingly smooth with no debris or rubble anywhere.

Slowly, Frysco approached the nearest wall, tracing his hand over the mysterious symbols in an attempt to glean some understand from them. They remained completely undecipherable.

Keeping his hand on the wall, the gryphon started to walk to one end of the massive chamber, choosing his direction at random. His torch flashed around, trying to find something of particular value, but everything all seemed quite bare. Just a few shelves of rock embedded into the walls; all empty, and rows of what looked like pews all facing towards an altar of some description, putting the gryphon in the mind of a church or temple. Surely this place hadn’t already been ransacked?

Sighing, Frysco was about to give up before his torchlight swung across an archway in the wall. He tilted his head and hurried towards it. He hadn’t seen any other passages leading away from the big chamber, so he hoped something interesting was hidden within.

At first his torch found nothing of interest again, and Frysco slumped his shoulders. It was just a small antechamber, barely large enough for him to extend his arms out either side of his body. Then the light glinted off something shiny and metallic. With a crow of victory, Frysco dived down onto his knees and pushed aside some loose stones that had partially concealed something metallic.

What lay beneath threatened to take his breath away. Short of looking in a mirror, he had never seen something so utterly beautiful before. It was a statue carved out of what looked like the purest gold. Three snakes writhed out from the base, their bodies entwined so tightly it was hard to tell just where one ended and the other began. The three heads were all facing in different directions, though all possessed matching expressions of aggression, mouths open and fangs bared.

The statue was a thing of ornate beauty, and the gryphon simply couldn’t resist reaching out to touch it. He was a gryphon, and thus he deserved the most beautiful things to accentuate his own.

The moment his fingers touched the gold, he felt a numbing tingle pass through his arm like a static shock. He almost recoiled back, but the sensation was gone before he could really register it, making him wonder if he’d imagined the entire thing. He shrugged and gripped one of the snakes and lifted the statue up. It was surprisingly heavy for its size, and he had to use both hands to hold it up, holding his torch between finger and thumb around one of the snakes.

Staring into the gemstone eyes of one of the snakes, Frysco smiled widely. This was truly a find to surpass all finds. And it was all his. He had found this cave all by himself, and the treasures within were his to claim. This statue would never fall into anyone else’s hands.

Entranced by the beauty he gazed upon, the gryphon slowly started to walk back out of the antechamber. His steps were slow and uncertain as though he was trapped in a hypnotic daze. The grip on the torch slackened, until it clattered down to the floor and plunging the gryphon into almost total darkness.

That brought Frysco out of his reverie. He cursed and tucked the statue underneath one arm as he crouched down and patted around for his torch. It couldn’t have gone far, but he couldn’t find it. He hadn’t accidentally kicked it as it fell, had he?

“Damn it,” he muttered as he crawled around on his hands and knees. He hoped he wasn’t going to ruin his clothes, as all this scuffling around on the floor was most unbefitting of a gryphon. He couldn’t even see the light from the cavern entrance, though he knew that had to be somewhere close by. He could feel the air moving from the breeze on his face.

Clacking his beak in annoyance, Frysco decided to forget about the torch and simply start following the breeze. That would get him out eventually, he was sure.

From the corner of his eye, the gryphon noticed an increasing glow of red light. He blinked and shuffled around, but whenever he turned, the light moved too, staying just out of the corner of his vision. And then there was the quiet hiss that sounded like it was slowly getting louder.

“Huh? Snakes?” he whispered, slowly raising up to his feet again and holding the statue out like he was brandishing a weapon of sorts. It would certainly be heavy enough for one, at least. It was then that Frysco noticed the source of the strange red glow. The jewelled eyes of all three of the golden snakes were shining quite brightly.

Then they blinked.

Yelling in shock, Frysco flung the statue away from him, letting it clatter on the rock floor. Almost immediately, the glowing stopped and this time the gryphon was plunged into total darkness. He couldn’t even see his hands waving in front of his beak. What was worse, the air had stilled, leaving him with no idea what direction he was facing.

Sssssnakesssss, yesssssss…

The voice whispered all around the gryphon, but he couldn’t be sure whether it was spoken within his mind or not. He whipped around, but could see nothing but darkness.

“Who’s there? What are you?” he squawked, a little ashamed to hear the panic in his voice.

Sssssnakessss, of courssssse….

Before he was able to answer, an intense light threatened to blind the gryphon. Flinging his arms in front of his head to shield his eyes, Frysco was momentarily dazzled as he dropped down onto his back. When his eyes recovered, he gasped. It felt like he had been transported. Gone was the dusty and ancient cavern. Instead he was in a temple with walls of resplendent gold and silver and jewels. And yet, he could tell from the layout of the many pews that he hadn’t moved at all.

The gryphon spent so long gaping in awe that he didn’t notice the statue’s glowing red eyes as they glared at him. Nor did he care for the scratching and squirming at his crotch, instead just idly brushing his hand against it to try and clear away whatever it was that was bothering him there. That didn’t work. In fact, the odd sensation of something moving was getting stronger, and even felt like it was happening beneath his pants.

Slowly, Frysco’s eyes drifted away from the beautiful cavern walls and down to his crotch. He blinked a few times as he saw something clearly moving down there, a large, writhing bulge in his pants. And whatever it was, it felt good, making the gryphon blush.

With a surreptitious glance around to confirm that he was indeed alone, Frysco reached down and undid his belt buckle. Seeming to realise it was about to be freed, the bulge moved around some more, rubbing against the inside of the gryphon’s pants and making the hybrid moan in delight. He didn’t understand why, but every movement of that squirming bulge sent tingling pleasure through his whole body.

His fingers trembling, Frysco unbuttoned his pants before falling back in shock as a snake burst free from the tight confines of his clothes. Instinctively he thrust his hands out, grabbing the snake just beneath the head. Rolling over, Frysco pinned the snake down into the ground, then instantly regretted that decision as he was almost overcome by a mind-numbing pleasure that radiated out from his crotch.

Suppressing a whimper, Frysco kept one hand pinning the snake’s head, while his other danced down the scaled body to find the tail. The snake was being surprisingly placid, barely moving at all as the gryphon explored its length.

What the gryphon found sent his blood cold. The snake hadn’t just been in his pants for some reason. It had no tail. It emerged right from his crotch, with his fur melting seamlessly into the snake’s scaled body.

His hand gripped around the snake’s base and gave it a firm tug. That resulted in a loud, pained squawk from the gryphon, and an annoyed hiss from the snake. “Not doing that again,” Frysco muttered as he looked down on the snake. “Now… that the hell are you?”

Sssssnakessss…

Frysco blinked and slowly released the snake. It stirred and slowly writhed upwards, lifting up from the gryphon’s crotch to stare into its host’s eyes. The snake’s eyes started to glow, much like the statue had been a few moments before. The gryphon found himself unable to look away, nor did he have the desire to do so either. There was just something within the snake’s eyes that entranced him, drew him in. It was echoed by the voices hissing through his mind.

Yessssss… Ssssso willing… ssssssso sssssubdued….

Then the snake looked away, and whatever spell it had cast on Frysco’s mind was reduced, allowing the gryphon to move freely again. He slowly rose to his feet, hesitant and wary as he moved with the heavy snake coiled out in front of him. Still the serpent didn’t seem to want to attack, so the gryphon tried his best to ignore it for the moment, at least until he could work out what to do with it, and how to revert his cock back from this unwanted serpentine appendage.

Scratching his head, the gryphon looked down towards the golden snake statue. There was no doubt in his mind that the artefact was behind this somehow. He took a step forward, but something about his legs just didn’t feel right. They felt weak and… soft, somehow. He tried to put the feeling out of his mind and keep walking towards the statue, but he could only make it another couple of steps before he stumbled and fell. He dropped to his knees first, before even they failed to hold his weight.

Landing on his belly with the snake trapped beneath him, Frysco tried to drag himself forward, before the numbing sensation in his legs forced him to stop and look back. He could hear more hissing echo around the massive cavern.

Trying to move his legs, Frysco squawked in surprise as the snake beneath him suddenly thrust up, knocking the gryphon over onto his back. Now the snake seemed much more mobile, but its attention wasn’t towards the gryphon’s face. Instead it was down to his crotch and the snake’s own base.

The snake took Frysco’s pants in its mouth and started to tug on them, slowly starting to slide them down. Sitting up, the gryphon rubbed his head in confusion as he looked down at the squirming serpent as it struggled with his pants. He tried to move his legs, but they were curiously unresponsive, as well as flecked with shimmering scales.

Frowning, Frysco reached down to touch his legs, but as he did so his crotch snake reared up and hissed, snapping its fangs towards him. Recoiling, the gryphon warily eyed the serpent, not willing to get caught up with those teeth. Seemingly satisfied the gryphon wasn’t going to interfere again, the snake returned to freeing Frysco’s scaled legs from his pants again, tugging them free.

Completely numb and senseless, the gryphon’s legs started to move once they were freed from his pants. The writhed and wriggled, moving in a manner that was quite unnatural for legs. Two more snakes started to hiss close by, and Frysco could only watch in horror as two more pairs of beady red snake eyes stared up at him from what had once been his feet.

Crying out in shock, the gryphon rolled over onto his belly, shivering as he felt his crotch snake slide and writhe beneath him. Digging his fingers into the smooth stone floor, he tried to drag himself along, but the two snake legs were starting to move around by themselves, tugging back on the gryphon.

“Ack! No, what are you doing to me?” Frysco panted, still trying to pull himself forward. He wasn’t sure the snakes could even understand him, for all the reaction they gave. They just hissed and slithered, tugging back on the gryphon and flicking their tongues into the air.

Don’t ressssisssst… sssssubmit…

“Who are you?” Frysco called out to the unwavering light, as well as to the golden statue that glared unflinchingly at him with its glowing red eyes. “What’s happening to me?”

The gryphon was forced into silence as his tongue started to swell up. Only able to groan in shock, he sacrificed one hand from dragging himself forward to prod a couple of fingers inside his beak to work out what was happening to him. He was met with two sharp fangs sinking into his finger.

Yelping and shaking his hand to reduce the pain, Frysco clamped his beak shut, trying to ignore the squirming he could feel from within. He was only able to drag himself forward a couple of feet before the pressure inside his beak became too much to contain. It was full of writhing coils of snake, and its head soon forced his beak to part.

With a muffled gagging sound, the gryphon had no choice but to let the tongue serpent free. Already it was as large as the other writhing snakes, dominating his beak and even forcing his head to turn this way and that.

His voice stolen from him, Frysco knew he had to get to the statue to fix this mess. He didn’t know how, but he was certain that laying his hands on the golden snakes would return him to his normal self. From the tugs on his hips, he could feel the snakes that had taken his legs writhing and entwining with each other, their movements making it harder and harder for him to drag himself forward.

Clawing his hands forward, Frysco shuddered and looked up to the statue. It was only a few feet away now, but his arms were already feeling so weak and numb. He didn’t know if he had the strength to reach forward any more. Most of his vision was obscured by his open beak and the massive snake that pushed out from it. That serpent had twisted around to stare down at him, another pair of crimson eyes to bore right through his head.

The gryphon tried to speak, but with his tongue extending so far out of his beak and filling it so entirely, he could only muffle and mumble. His pleading attempts to reason with the mass of snakes that were taking over his body were never heard. But the snakes still spoke to him; their hissing voices drilled deep into his head, making his thoughts hard to focus.

His fingers started to stretch out as his arms fell limp. The gryphon struggled to move them, his shoulders twitching as panic started to set in. There was a strange, twitching sensation on his back too, but for the moment his attention was solely on his changing hands, staring in horror as a tongue flicked out from his middle finger on his right hand.

Frysco mumbled in panic, his body useless as he writhed on the floor, his limbs denied to him. He could feel his legs sliding around behind him, providing him with no assistance as his hands started to split apart. He thought it should be painful, but he just watched as they separated into five long, slender bodies as though they weren’t even a part of him anymore.

The divide in his hands spread down onto his wrists, and then over his forearms. New heads formed as ten more snakes pushed themselves free from his arms until they writhed directly from his shoulders. They all slithered over his beak, their flicking tongues tickling his face.

Powerless to do anything about it, Frysco could just squirm, not noticing the feathers and fur that remained on his body slowly start to shed, being replaced by glimmering, iridescent scales. Two more tongues flicked at his cheeks. Horrified, the gryphon turned his head just enough to see that his wings, his beautiful, colourful wings, had been diminished to two more snakes. Their merged bases tugged at his shoulders as they moved over his back.

Yessssss… become ussssss… ssssseparate into your true formssssss…

The gryphon tried to squeeze his beak closed, his eyes forced shut as the snakes seemed to lengthen and grow. Even the snake at his crotch pulsed as it thickened, before abruptly the bases of them all diminished and shrunk. Each with a wet sucking sound, they all broke away one by one, but none went far. The snakes entwined themselves around Frysco, wrapping his limbless body tight.

Misssssstresssssss…

Squeezing down, Frysco was finally able to slam closed his beak, feeling the tail of the snake slip free. But instead of the usual clack of his beak, he felt smooth scales sliding against each other. His newly forked tongue poked forward, bumping against two long fangs that threatened to stick out of his mouth even when it was closed.

He tried to speak, but could only emit a low hiss that sounded most unlike any speech he recognised. His body, constricted by most of the snakes while one watched on, felt odd. It felt long and thin, and without any limbs to control at all.

The snake in front of him peered down, eyes glowing like the statue had done so. Missssstressss, it hissed at him, flicking its tongue out to taste the air. He – for the gryphon knew the snake was certainly male, as were all the others that writhed around him – stared into Frysco’s eyes with lust and devotion. The snake’s hot breath washed over his face as the hissing adoration continued, his mind fogging over.

He struggled to remember why he was there as the snakes that had been a part of his body slowly disentangled to reveal his new form. He was a serpent like them, but great and better than they could ever hope to be. The former gryphon’s tongue flicked out to taste their scent on the still air. Thralls. Servants. Nothing more than that. Alive only to serve the colony queen. And that was her, the former body of the host that had spawned them. Bigger and more powerful than her brethren, she controlled them totally.

Lifting her head up off the ground, the snake hissed a command to her colony. They lovingly nuzzled into her, biting into the coat that wrapped around her torso and tearing her free of the course fabric. They then wrapped around her, their tails so tightly entwined it looked like they were permanently connected to one another.

Letting the queen adapt to her new body, the colony slowly started to slither forward, scales rippling across the smooth ground. Two of the snakes darted out, latching onto the heavy statue with their jaws and lifting it into the air. Together, the snakes carried it away, retreating back to the small antechamber at the back of the temple. Slowly the darkness returned, engulfing the light and shrouding all into shadow.

Of the gryphon, all that was left was his tattered clothes and the torch that flickered pitifully in defiance of the encompassing darkness. When the light finally gave in and died, the temple was still and silent once more. A new colony of serpents had slipped out into the open air, the new queen leading her devoted servants out into the world.

The queen had paused only briefly to flick her tongue out into the air. Her old memories, dredged up from a life that was unrecognisable to her now, told her of an encampment nearby. There she would find food for her serpents and new thralls for her to convert to her will. Her tongue wagged in the air, locking on to her new prey. With her eyes glowing red, she slithered on to hunt her prey with her thralls by her side.

She was coming.
