Too late

It is too late. He had his chance, but he missed it. He failed big-time. Miserably. It's his fault and his alone. He thought about it for a very long time, but he still had no one else to blame. He was stupid. So stupid. Now he has to pay the ultimate price. He looked up to the dark sky. It was full of stars.

He remembered back to the good old days. Her face... her beautiful face. He still saw her face every time he closed his eyes. When they were in high school. Sitting there in the classroom next to her, listening to classes every single day for years. Why did it end? Why did they go on their separate ways? Because of him. He was too shy to say something. Too stupid to show his feelings. He knew that she loved him. He saw the love in her eyes. Those beautiful eyes... He started to cry.

Their friendship had a bumpy start. Both of them were silent, shy kids. At first they ignored each other and rarely even said a word to each other. But when it came to the tests, he was good at some subjects, while she was good at others. They helped each other. They became friends, they shared so much time together. So many adventures. They became adults together. When everyone else hooked up with someone they stayed single and yet they were together. But none of them took the first step. He should have done it. Now it's too late.

If only he could just go back in time. If only it would be possible. Just this once, please let some miracle happen. Please...

He wanted to go back to that day. When it all ended. The last day of high school. He should have said something... but he didn't. He regretted that day. It hurt him ever since. But he hoped. He always hoped, that something will happen and they get back together. He still hoped when her relationship status changed to taken. Then mated. He never gave up hope. Not until she posted the picture of her newborn foals. It was the last nail in his coffin. He went to his car and started up the engine.

There are no miracles. No startover. No hope. He stepped on the gas. The car was accelerating rapidly. He lost everything in his life that was important to him. He is a failure. And there is no need for him in this world. Not anymore. He took his paws off the wheel and pushed the accelerator pedal to the floor. It's time to end this.

The car's emergency systems registered the problem. They've started to beep loudly. When the onboard computer registered no reply it applied the emergency brakes and steering. The car stopped itself before he could crash into something.

He kept crying. He couldn't do a single thing right. He still felt the pain. Why should he endure this any longer? Suddenly the sky brightened above him, blinding him for a second. He looked up and saw a beautiful comet passing above him. His pain flew away with it. Maybe this was the sign he wanted? He was still alive. He started up the car again and moved on. Maybe there is something out there for him. He thought about the stars on the night sky and the fast comet. This world is so big, one day he will find someone... someone who will love him.

He wiped down the tears from his face and after a long time he smiled again. He has to try. He can't give up, he will- His phone started to ring. It was on the passenger seat. He reached for it while he kept looking at the road. When he looked at the screen his mouth almost dropped. It was her. Miracles do happen! Everything will happen like he always wanted. He touched the screen to unlock.

The car's alarms started to beep loudly again. He looked up and saw an oncoming truck in his lane. The automatic systems reacted faster than he ever could. The wheel started to turn and the car was going to avoid the crash. But in the same time the truck driver also started to turn into the same direction for the same reason. The crash was now inevitable.

Suddenly everything became very slow. He knew that it was the end. Thoughts and emotions ran through his head very fast. He didn't want to die. Not anymore. But it didn't matter, because there was nothing he could do. It was too late.

  • Hello!

He heard her voice. Her beautiful voice. One last time. He wanted to say something, but it was too late. It all ended in a fraction of a second.
