#1 of The Samaritan

Here is Chapter 1 of a new story that came into my head, whether or not I continue with it will depend on you guys, so Faves, Comments, and rates are all very welcome. Thanks everyone and I hope that you enjoy it.

EDIT

I will keep the story name the same but for recognition purposes, I have changed the name of the Samaritan's company to The Salvation Army, my apologies for the confusion.

There has to be something better than this, here I lie on the cold and wet pavement, blood streaming from my nose, my vision fading in and out of focus, my old and tattered wallet lies next to my head and I am pretty sure that whatever was left in it which would not have been a lot has now been taken.

I let out a soft and pitiful whimper but I doubt very much that it is heard over the sound of the rain and even if it is heard it would most likely be mistaken for the sound of the squeaking sign that blows in the wind above my head.

I feel pain at the back of my head and then I begin to shiver uncontrollably, my eyes begin to fail and everything is going dark, the final thing that I see before total darkness is the shadowy figure of someone beginning to kneel at my side, but it is too little too late.

Suddenly.

There are the faint signs of light but it is a dark light, devoid of anyone or anything, I no longer feel cold, the shivering has stopped, am I dead and in doggy heaven? Somehow I doubt that as in life I was never a religious German Shephard.

The light begins to get brighter and now I can make out flashing colours of red and blue and my ears are starting to pick up distant voices.

The next thing that my addled brain recognises is the feeling of weightlessness, am I flying through the clouds or am I being picked up and carried?

"For the love of all that is good brain, help me out here, give me a fucking clue."

There is one voice that now becomes clearer.

"Take it easy there my friend, you have had a really bad beating and so I don't doubt that you are more than a little bit foggy at the moment, now I want you to squeeze my paw if you can hear and understand my voice."

I have no idea if I manage to follow the instructions but judging by the fact that the voice begins to continue I am guessing that I had to a certain extent.

"Okay that's good, at least you are still in there somewhere, you may not remember any of this when you finally fully rejoin us but I will tell you anyway, my name is Sam Daniels and I am a Paramedic with the London Ambulance Service, squeeze my paw if you can understand that."

This time I feel a little movement in my right arm.

"Well that is encouraging at least, okay I will break it down into bits for you, after each bit I want you to squeeze my paw so that I can see that you have understood."

There is a pause and so I give his paw another squeeze.

"Fantastic, you are slowly coming back to us, you can understand me and you can follow simple instructions, now for the next bit of information, it looks like you have been the victim of a rather nasty mugging and you have gained a few injuries as a result."

Another pause, another squeeze.

"We found what we believe to be your empty wallet on the pavement by the side of your head but so far we have no idea who you are."

Another pause, another squeeze.

"We are taking you to Saint Bartholomew's Hospital to get you patched up and to also get you a bit of rest so that maybe you can come fully back to us enough to begin to fill in some of the blanks."

Another pause and another squeeze, this time weaker and then the light behind my eyes begins to fade out and darkness consumes me once again.

The light behind my eyes begins to come back, this time a little faster, my eyelids slowly flicker open, I can now take in my surroundings, I'm in a bed with white sheets in a clinical looking room, I rack my memory and latch on to the last that I remember, I must be at Saint Bartholomew's Hospital, there is a machine next to me that is giving out a constant beeping sound.

I look down at my arms, my right one has wires stuck to it and tubes connected to it, my left one looks to be clear and so I do a cursory body check, first my head, I feel what must be quite a large bandage wrapping fully around my head, I look down to my chest area and find that as well as being covered by the bed sheet they have clothed me in a hospital gown.

I lift the sheet and look down further, merciful heavens my lower half seems to be undamaged but I can feel a slight pain in my butt, so I have either been kicked, or worse raped, I never thought I would admit this but right now I hope that it is just where I have been kicked.

My head rises at the sound of the door being opened, my thought processes are still a little foggy but the clues are all there, white coat, clipboard, and practised smile so obviously a Doctor.

"Ah Mr Doe, you are awake, that is fantastic news, I will call the nurse and while she checks your bandages and connections I will slowly go through what we know about you and why you are here."

I give a gentle nod of acknowledgement, the Doctor leaves the room briefly to return moments later with a nurse following him, I can now make out a few details of the two professionals, the Doctor I can see is a male Akita, age not quite sure but I would say about late 40's, the nurse well she is a Vixen and possibly in her early 30's.

The Doctor stands to the left of my bed while the nurse goes about the checks.

"Now then Mr Doe, here is what we know for certain, you were the victim of a very nasty attack indeed, at first it was thought that it was just a mugging, but I'm afraid that we have something more sinister to report, there is no easy way to tell you this but from evidence that we gained when we checked your body for injuries it seems that you were also raped."

I closed my eyes tightly and let out a gentle whimper as I hear this.

"We have taken a sample of the semen from your nether regions and have sent it away to be analysed, hopefully, the guy who did this is on record and the Police will be able to take the appropriate action, as a precaution we have tested you for any sexually transmitted diseases and we await the results of those, of course, it goes without saying that we have given you a thorough cleaning but I would still say that you are going to feel quite unwell for a fair few days."

The Doctor rests an easy paw on my left arm as a show of compassion.

"I would like to know if you can fill in some of the blanks that we don't know such as your name, age and next of kin? I can't keep calling you Mr Doe after all."

I slowly open my eyes and the Doctor can see that I am starting to sob a little.

"Hey now please don't cry, none of this was your fault, you were just in the wrong place at the wrong time."

The Doctor's words don't ease my self-loathing but I do at least manage to bring myself back under control enough to answer his questions.

"My name is Karl Banks, I'm 45 and I have no next of kin, well that is not fully true, I do have parents but they disowned me three years ago."

The Doctor just nods as he notes down what I have told him, he then asks the question that I was all too quick with an answer to.

"Well Mr Banks, I know that you say that your folks disowned you, but would you like me to contact them and let them know what has happened?"

I look at the Doctor with a steely gaze.

"No Doctor, they are the last people I want to know about what has gone on, letting them back in will mean that they will know what town I have moved to."

Again the Doctor gives a gentle nod. It is now time for me to get some of my own blanks cleared up.

"So Doctor tell me, how did I end up here after the attack?"

The smile returns to the Doctor's muzzle.

"Ah yes, it seems as though you have your very own guardian angel in the form of someone from the Salvation Army, in fact, he is sitting in the waiting room right now, he is refusing to leave because he is so worried about you."

I know that a hospital has a duty of care which will not allow anyone other than next of kin into a patients room, especially when I am still hooked up to various machines, but I give the Doctor a pleading look that he seems to be able to read quite well.

"At the moment Mr Banks you are not quite fit enough to receive visitors just yet, but the nurse and I will give you some time to rest and then if the Samaritan is still waiting then I will allow him to pay you a visit."

Sure I know that the guy in the waiting room could be the guy who attacked me, but he could also be the shadowy figure that knelt by my side before I blacked out. I need to meet him no matter what and so I just nod my head and then settle back down into my bed to try and get some rest.
