This story is a sequel to the storyThe Midterm Demonstration.
There were several hundred students standing around outside the Langley Auditorium. Professor Damien's voice came over the PA.
"Okay, just to recap what was in the brochure you received last week:
"First, only those who are currently enrolled in the class will be seated in the main room. But don't worry, there's plenty of room in our four alternate buildings: Rayley Hall, the Sangster and Causey Building, or Heath Center." The professor pointed at nearby ivy-covered buildings as he named them.
"One exception: we have eighty seats in the main room that are upholstered in red. If you take a red seat, you will be snuffed today. As with the midterm, those who are snuffed will received an automatic "A" for the year and a posthumous BA in Snuff Sciences. The red seats are in the middle section, rows two through five. The very best seats, of course, are the green seats in the first two rows, reserved for those who have earned an 'A' in course A201.
"Our students have done quite well this year. Only 27 students are facing a grade of 'D' or 'F'. Do any of our 6 'F' students want red seats?"
Two young furs raised their hands and were allowed into the Aud after the ushers had checked their student IDs.
"And any 'D' students?"
Five more students were carded and admitted.
"Now any other A201 students who want to be snuffed today?"
23 students gained priority admission.
"Anyone not enrolled in our course this year who wants to volunteer? This is the only way you will get into the main room today."
About 40 came up to the doors and were allowed in.
"Everybody else who isn't enrolled in A201, please take seats in one the other buildings. You won't miss much. Those buildings are furnished with both individual seats and mattresses with room for two to a very friendly six. There are giant screens on the walls and ceilings of those rooms, so anywhere you sit--or crouch, kneel, stand, or lie down--you will have a good view of the giant screens that show the events in Langley in close-up."
About three quarters of the crowd went off to the other buildings. The Prof looked around and seemed satisfied.
"Good. Now everybody else who is currently taking course A201 can take your seats. Don't push, there's enough seating for everybody, and if anybody gets trampled to death we'll have to cancel the demo."
There were 20 doors into the Auditorium, with two guards at each door. The students were rapidly processed in and took their seats. Some--especially those who were considering volunteering if the "right" kind of snuff was offered--sat just outside the reserved area of green and red seats. Others near the back of the room, hoping to not attract unwanted attention. Or maybe they just wanted to be first in line for the lunch buffet. The vast majority went for seats in between.
As before, some students wondered if they really wanted to major in Snuff Sciences, while others wondered which of their classmates would be carried out feet first.
After the students had taken their seats, The Professor stepped up to the lectern. "Our first demonstration today will be a drowning, but we will use a slightly different technique than in the midterm. The snuffee will be strapped to a board with his or her face just above the surface of the water. The executioner will then push the snuffee's face into the water and keep it there until the snuffee's heart stops beating.

Snuffee: the character who is snuffed in the demo Executioner: the character who kills the snuffee. An onlooker who may have interesting thoughts as he/she watches the snuff demonstration.
