#3 of Flames

A story of a shapeshifter in the middle of a raging war.

It was a few days later. Rhy was just sitting at the mouth of the cave when he saw something strange in the sky. It looked like a plane, but at the same time, it was too small to really see what it actually was. 'Eh. Probably a plane...' he thought, and returned to his reading with a cigarette in his mouth. Little did he know that the small shape in the sky was headed towards his way. So obviously caught him offguard when what was a small spec in the sky landed next to him. 'What are you reading?' a deep male voice asked him, to which Rhy jumped in surprise and dropped the book. 'God damnit...' he grumbled, picking up the book. Then he turned towards the intruder. 'Who are you and what do you...' he was cut short just at that. In front of him, was a dragon, just like him. Yes, he did had a different colored hide and a different body shape, making it obvious that he was from a different breed, but still, it kind of surprised him. He knew there were dragons out there, but he'd never seen one himself, making him think that they, including him, and if any of them had the ability to shift, were very scarce.

'I see you've noticed me finally.' He said. 'I see I've gotten to the right place, by the looks as well.' He added. Rhy finally managed to speak. 'You're a dragon, right?' he asked, unbelievingly. 'And you're asking me about it. Aren't you one? Look at yourself! I don't think you're not one.' The strange dragon said, looking at him half wittedly. 'Whatever. I've never seen one. Does that answer my question?' he retorted angrily. 'Why are you here anyways? And who told you I lived here?' 'Word spreads fast. At least in our world, that is. And yes. That includes you as well.' The copper said. 'What..? Oh that Ravison. I'm gonna kill him...' Rhy growled. 'Oh, you know him?' That relieves me of the tedious explanation then. Good. And yes, Ravison did spill the beans, but not all the way. He couldn't, actually. He had no idea where you were. He did tell me that you went missing, though.' The copper said unconcerned. 'And by the way, I was part of the project. Thought you might want to know that.'

'You're an experiment as well?' Rhy asked, definitely caught offguard this time. But the copper laughed at it. 'Me? An Experiment? Hell, no! What I was saying, was that I was part of the team of making you as you are. You should thank me for it.' Copper said, laughing as if he'd heard something funny as hell. On the other had, Rhy was starting to rage. 'Oh, THANK YOU, for making me into this freak! I would've rather died! I have no one left, and do you even know what it feels like? Do you know what it's like to have constant weight on your shoulders because of your parents left you to clean up the mess they made? Do you have ANY idea what it's like to live like this?!' he shouted angrily. Copper stopped laughing immediately, and looked angry as well. 'Do you know how much effort went in, making you? How much work we had to do? How much blood we had to spill?!' The copper retorted angrily at him. 'You should appreciate it, if not embrace your change!' 'And did I ask for this? No! I didn't! It was YOU guys who turned me! Why didn't you just let me die?! Why do I have to deal with all my parent's shit? Tell me that!' Rhy demanded angrily. 'For fuck's sake, they're your parents! Doesn't that mean anything to you?' The copper said, angry and getting lost at the same time. Obviously, the copper wasn't prepared for this kind of talk. Not at all. 'No! They're the ones who made the wrong choice, then decided that they should leave me to clean up their mess! And if this is what you're going to talk about, and what you came here for, I suggest you leave.' Rhy answered angrily.

'Not so fast.' Yet another voice said. Rhy whirred round, and saw 3 more pairs of wings standing at the entrance. 'What are you here for?' Rhy asked, anger still in his voice. 'If you have the same intention as this copper, I suggest you leave as well!' 'Shall we introduce ourselves? Recoveni, at your service.' The biggest blue one said. 'And the idiot here is my second command, Hecin.' Hecin was looking at him like he wanted to say something, but he was shutting his mouth. 'Rhy. Rhy Quan.' Rhy answered. Recoveni nodded his head politely. 'So why are you guys here? And no, don't answer, 'copper'. I had had enough of you.' Rhy said, looking at Hecin angrily. Recoveni eyed between the two, trying to control the invisible line of anger between the two. Hecin huffed when he noticed his superior looking at him, turned around, and opened his wings. 'I'll see you when you're finished business with him, leader.' He said, nodding his head forcefully, trying to be polite, then took off, not caring if he got the permission from his leader or not, and flew away.

Rhy sighed, letting his muscles and mind relax. He turned to the blue dragon again, looking at him with a questioning expression. 'Why are you here again?' he asked, trying to be polite. 'And how did you fine me anyways?' 'Let's just say that you weren't as stealthy as you hoped you were.' 'What? How?' 'Let's just say that a black spec in the sky doesn't look like a plane when the day's clear.' '...oh.' 'Now that that's out of the way, let us discuss what we're here for. You already know we were involved in the... shall we say 'making'? of you, am I right? Though I do regret that things had gotten that rough between you and Hecin. I do apologize for that.' Recoveni apologized, polite and genuine. Rhy nodded, trying to be polite as well. He knew he had to answer in some kind of polite way as well, but his emotion filled brain couldn't come up with one in an instant. Recoveni thankfully seemed to understand, and went on with the conversation. 'We are here to make an offer. We, as in a part of our clan, grouped up with some wizards and witches when we had the plan to 'make' you. Yes, we had failures, but in the end we succeeded, making a good enough reagent, which thankfully worked on you. And before you get angry and question us, all the experiment victims were people or dragons who volunteered. That includes your parents as well.' 'What?' Rhy almost shouted, disbelievingly. 'Yes, it was your parents who decided in the end to put you in this situation. We of course did subject to it and raise questions, as your parents were one of our key members from the start, but your parents just won't change their opinion. Don't know what went in their heads, but it worked in the end, didn't it? At least you didn't die.' Recoveni added cheerfully. 'Our offer, Mr. Quan, is to come with us. You'll have a decent chance to prepare and train yourself. At least it'll be better than being by yourself, as 'we' could train you.'

'And why should I believe you? Yes, training, I could not object to that. I could, but accepting your offer would be the most sensible one. But why should I trust you that you will keep your words? For all I know, you might just be trying to get me back into the wizard world.' Rhy countered. Recoveni somehow didn't seem to be fazed by his words. 'Yes, yes. One could raise those questions, more if they were in a situation like yours. But you just have to give trust from time to time. I'll give you time to think about it. I'll leave you this agreement. Sign it if you agree upon our terms. We'll know if you accept it or not.' Then he turned towards the opening of the cave, and the other two dragons jumped out, hovering mid-air, waiting for their leader. The big blue dragon turned towards him one last time before he leapt into the sky. 'Best wishes, Mr. Quan.' He said, and left.

Rhy looked at the parchment in front of him. It listed the agreement upon it, so he took his time reading through all the sentences. He really didn't want a repeat of what happened in Tuxion, and he was willing to use some of his time to not make it happen again. After he'd read all of the agreements on the parchment, he didn't sign immediately. He knew he was going to have to have some time to think about it, or he'll probably regret not thinking it through later. So, he left the parchment where it was, and stepped into his cave and got a cigarette. Lighting it, he went to the opening of the cave, and took a deep drag. Should he go? He'd definitely have a better chance against the Devil's Partners if he did. And if the clan and their leader stood abide by their promises, he won't have any problems. He just hoped that there weren't any loopholes in the agreement that he hadn't noticed.

Feeling the taste of the cigarette change, he looked at what he was smoking. Indeed, it was almost burnt out, and was now burning at the filter. Rhy stomped down on the burnt out cigarette, and went inside once again. He had made up his mind. Maybe one more chance couldn't hurt.

Time to sign the patchment.
