Our Family Chapter 2
#16 of My pack
Next part of the story
Well here it is, after years of waiting the next part of the story is finished. Sorry it took so long, I suck for that but will try not to go so long between updates again
_________
---Brian
I looked up at Kimber. He hadn't left the room in some time. Just sat there, looking over his work notes. I was tired, but I didn't want to give him the satisfaction of knowing I went down so easily. "It's fucked," I said coldly.
Kimber looked up at me, "Elaborate."
I growled, "Don't use fancy words with me big shot! But, it's fucked, ya know?"
Kimber gave a slight shrug, "It's life. You were never the golden child to begin with. Given how your parents reacted to things, just got out of hand from there."
"You know why I did it? The sex, I mean aside from the fun. I did it because of them. Every guy I fucked, every dick I sucked. It was like hawking a loogie right in their faces. I did it because of them. My drunken ass dad, rattling on for hours about sissy boys and fairies. While my mom preached to the heavens and beyond."
I sighed, "Why couldn't they be like your parents?"
Kimber gave a small smile at that. "Mine didn't approve of it on the spot. They both did, in time. I don't know what I would have done if they reacted the way yours did Brian. I really don't. Suicide maybe, if not for my guys keeping me going that is. But without them, I would have finally done it."
I laid back across the bed. "I thought about it too, suicide. Offing myself, how easy it would be to jump from a bridge, or overdose. You asked about so much, and I said so little."
It was Kimber's turn to sigh. He put away his notes and sat up straight. "Wanting to come clean?"
"I came back because how things were just getting further out of hand. Blacking out, and then..." I just stopped. I couldn't say more but I knew I had to.
"Then what?" Kimber asked, prying just like I knew he would.
"Cleo, this lynx that used to get high with us. She overdosed, and they just left her there to die. While I was tripping balls on discount E. They just let her die, no one did jack! There I was, buzzing on who knows fucking what! When I finally came down, they told me they took care of the body and said not to ask more."
"What Kind of crazy shit is that Kimber? You think I wanted that? To fucking end up in some unknown hole after those ass hats let me die? I'm a fucking loser, afraid of death with nothing to fucking lose. I limped and crawled my way here. Been sober for, fuck if I know how long. It's itching my brain!"
I clenched my hand and started to pant. It was getting harder to stay awake. I went limp, Kimber yelled something but I couldn't make it out. Everything just went black from there.
---Kimber
"Nurse! Help!" I yelled, hitting the call button before running out into the hallway. Looking madly down both ends of the hallway. Running down to the Nurse's station when I didn't see anyone out in the hall.
The tabby behind the counter looked up at me. "Problem?"
I snorted, "Yeah you could say that. He's having some kind of reaction. He needs help!"
"If you're referring to Mister Lewis, it's just a reaction to detox. It will be mild and he should be back to whatever it is you kids do nowadays before you know it." She said returning her attention to her fashion magazine.
"That's rich, you're barely older than I am." I half yelled.
"Well, your kind, type, sort, you get what I mean now?"
I rolled my eyes, "Whatever lady. If anything, and I mean anything, happens to him on your watch. I will file so many malpractice, misconduct, negligence and private suits against you that you will be ninety before your legal ordeal ends."
She raised a brow, "That so?"
"That's so, my name is Kimber Keller. I work for Johnson and Smith, the Law Firm. This is no idle threat. You may not like gays, but that fag in there, he is my friend. Sure he fucked his life up in more ways than I can count. But he's my friend. I will protect him at all costs."
The tabby sighed and stood up slowly. "Fine, drama queen. Show me to your patient."
I growled softly but led the way back to Brian's room. He was out, breathing steadily and wasn't foaming at the mouth. She checked him over real quick and then looked at me.
"Heavy drug use, it's common for any number of reactions to take place. It's just fatigue setting in, could be out for days. Or he could wake up with explosive diarrhea. Oh joy, what fun that will be. Hard to know since from what toxicology said he has traces of just about everything in his system."
I took a deep breath, "I'm sorry. Just not used to this sort of thing. I had almost written him off too. Five years of no contact, and then bam, there he is. Weak and asking for help from people he used to talk trash about. He never took anything seriously."
"You should go home and get some sleep. Just because I'm stuck here for the night doesn't mean you're in the same boat. No one is going to let him die."
I rubbed my eyes, "I don't know. Someone should be here in case he wakes up. I can shift my work load tomorrow but pushing much beyond that wont be possible."
"You're a brat, you know?" She asked.
"I just don't want him to be hurt is all. Do you know when Doctor Fields will be in?"
"I'm not his keeper, he doesn't work on this floor so I cant say."
I gave a nod, "Alright. I guess I'll go get comfortable and try and sleep in this chair."
"You're in for a rough one with him, just warning you now."
I held up a hand, "Thank you for the concern. Good evening Nurse."
I settled back into the chair. Knowing there was no way I was going to be able to get comfortable enough to sleep. Torban, Eric and Iain would miss me. But Rem would kill me if I left Brian's side. I looked back at Brian. This was all strange to me and I didn't like that at all. The chemicals he polluted his body with couldn't just be flushed out.
We would have to ride this out together. I yawned and looked at the clock on the wall. Just past two and I was exhausted. "You owe me for this," I said quietly before attempting to curl up in the chair.
I was jolted awake by someone shoving my shoulder firmly. Almost falling out of the chair as I jumped. "What!" I shouted, blinking a few times as my eyes slowly focused. Two kangaroos stood in the room with me.
"Who the fuck are you?" the male asked, while the female just took in the scene.
I slowly stood up and straightened my tie. "Kimber Keller, though I guess you need no introduction. Mister and Misses Lewis."
Mister Lewis growled and pushed my shoulder firmly. Almost forcing me back down into the chair. "What are you doing here?"
I snorted, "None of your concern. Obviously you heard about what happened since you're here."
"Way to point out the obvious, Ein-Steen!" He shouted at me.
"Blessed Father, we ask that you give us your strength and wisdom." Misses Lewis said quietly before moving towards her son.
"You may be his family but Brian has ultimate say on who can be here. Since last he spoke to me, he didn't seem keen on being anywhere near you, I must insist that you leave immediately."
"Don'cha be telling me what to do. Just because you're wearing that fancy suit doesn't make you the boss here. You're still just that little queer from that small podunk town you were so keen to escape. Ain't you?"
"As Mister Lewis' Attorney I must insist that you leave until such a time as he is capable of speaking and gives permission for you to be here."
He raised a finger and jabbed me in the chest firmly. "Have it in writing do you? Mister fancy pants!"
I straightened my shirt, tucking it back into my pants. "Non verbal agreements are binding. As he isn't in a coma, or dead, it applies in this instance. You can leave your contact information with me and I'll pass it along when Brian wakes up. Until then you're not to be here."
"Excuse me?" A small voice said from the door. "This patient is resting, I'm going to have to ask that all of you leave now. Yourself included Mister Keller."
I looked at the nurse. "We have an arrangement."
She held up a hand, "I'm fully aware. However, as you're in the middle of a fight, you cant be here. Call for another friend and kindly return to the waiting room."
"Now look what you did faggot! Getting us kicked out!" the male roo yelled.
"Sir! If you don't calm down I will call Security." She warned looking at the older male.
"Go on then! Call them! Have this one thrown out!" He shouted in response.
I stepped out into the hall and looked back at the nurse. "Someone will be along shortly, if he comes to could you come get me?"
She didn't have a chance to respond though. Since neither roo seemed intent on leaving the room. "All of you need to leave, he needs his rest." The nurse repeated with a sigh.
I rolled my eyes and pulled out my cell to shoot a text over to the Doctor. Quickly doing so while Brian's parents continued to argue with the nurse. Getting almost as heated as they were with me. After several minutes they finally relented and left the room as a security guard was walking down the hall.
"We didn't do anything mall cop. See him out though, cant have this trash forcing himself on our son." Brian's dad spat at the honey badger who stood before him.
"Sir you need to leave, the nurse asked you, then told you and now I'm telling you. Do not make me remove you."
"Pft, whatever mall cop. We're going, to the waiting room, to wait. That's what you do there ain't it? Wait? In the waiting room." Brian's dad said walking backwards down the hall as he made an ass of himself.
"I'll go easy, we made arrangements with the hospital that one of us would be waiting with him. Could you? Just until someone else shows up. I was kicked out." I asked the guard.
He turned his attention to me and motioned with his head to the nurse's station and I followed him over. He checked my story with the nurse. Who mentioned there was a note in Brian's file that the hospital was allowing his friends to stay 24/7 during his stay. It was cleared with Brian's doctor thanks to Doctor Fields.
"You can go back in if the nurse says it's fine." The guard said walking away. I thanked him and was motioned by the nurse back towards Brian's room.
"Thank you, do me a favor and keep his parents away until Brian says it's fine. There's a lot of bad blood between them and we're really all the family he has, me and the other guys." I told her.
"Drug addicts regularly make enemies of their families. He needs to talk with them and bury the hatchet." She said looking up from her seat at me.
"It's not that simple, it started before the drugs and is the primary reason why he turned to them. His home situation was never good. In high school he covered it up by being a dick to everyone. After though, drug use and then he kind of disappeared on us. Before just suddenly showing back up again."
"Shouldn't take his word on everything, an addict is an addict. They have a tall tale about everything and everyone."
I sighed, "I've known him for a long time. This is one of those things where friends are better than family. We'll get him sorted."
She rolled her eyes and went back to her work. Leaving me free to reenter Brian's room. He was awake and drenched in sweat.
"How long since you last used, and honesty this time. You said you stole to buy drugs on the way up here. Then later said you quit after your friend died." I said sitting back in my chair.
"I was high when I got to Rem's. But I meant it, the quitting, I want to do it."
"Well Brian, here's the deal. We want to help you, we really do. But some of us are worried you'll vanish into the mists of oblivion once more as soon as we turn our backs. So if you really want our help, the price is being chained to a buddy every moment of every day until we feel we can trust you on your own."
Brian snorted and was about to say something when he tensed up. He sat up and I barely managed to get the pink kidney pan in front of him before he threw up. I just held it and rubbed his back with my free hand.
"Calm down rebel, I can only handle so much power to the people up in here." I said sarcastically.
"Fuck you!" Brian yelled struggling with the blanket, trying to kick out at me. I moved the half full pan before he could knock it over and coat us both in his puke.
"Hell no we won't go." I said with a half laugh. "Also, quit trying to kick. Nurses got those sheets tucked in so tight you'll never get out of there little joey."
"Double fuck you bitch! Going to beat your ass soon as I get out."
"Yeah I'm shaking in my polished shoes dude. I can leave if you really want me to, but then who will keep the Jesus freaks out."
"Wha- Oh fuck, you're kidding me?"
"Nope, Brother Dad and Sister Mom are down in the waiting room as we speak. Praying for your eternal soul and salvation from something or another. He tried to brawl me while you were out. I had to fight him to defend your honor. You're indebted to me till death takes you."
"Why do you have to be such a fucking dork?"
"It keeps me sane. Daily life, it's just so tedious. So I cope with it by being strange and unusual."
"What the fuck do they even want?"
"I already told you, to pray and what not. Probably take you home and electrocute the gay out of you."
"How did they even find me?"
"My guess, and it's a bit of a long shot here so hear me out. When Doctor what's his face, whoever it is that is watching you, called Prosser for your medical information they gave him their number as the emergency contact. You really should change that by the way."
"Fuck me."
"Yeah I don't think so dude, no clue where you've been."
"Not what I meant bitch and you know it."
"Mister Keller, you've been warned once before." The nurse called from the now open door.
"He's fine," Brian said slumping back against the bed.
"One more outburst and he's gone. Patients are trying to rest, patients like you Mister Lewis and I suggest you make the most of that rest time before the withdrawals hit. We're still waiting on the lab to sort out what drugs you were on. Currently the only thing you're on is saline with a shot of minerals to perk you up."
"That explains why you tossed your cookies," I said sticking my tongue out at him.
"If that's all he's done consider yourself lucky. He wont be staying for drug treatment so he'll likely get a dose of methadone before we discharge him tomorrow. He'll have to follow up with treatment on his own." With that she turned and left the room, the door closing behind her.
"Go to work, I'll be fine alone for a bit." Brian said staring up at the ceiling.
"Nothing going on at work. I gave everything I had to my para legal. If I go back now he'll pout and I do not want to deal with that. Things are weird between us as is."
"Weird?"
"Jason, he's a doberman. Gay ish, bisexual but heavy lean towards guys. He fancies my secretary, Jen but she's not interested at all. But he has it really hard for me. He is a good para legal, knows the ins and outs of law better than the first one they sent my way. I have no reason to ask for another. So we just deal with it being weird."
"It's all good fun though. Jen teases him, he jabs back, mostly with remarks about how I'm going to do something with him and she'll be jealous. So if I go back and take work from him he'll be upset, feel betrayed. Easier to just let him take the reward and be happy."
"You should just fuck him if that's what he wants," Brian said.
"That would be cheating Brian, I have three great guys in my life. Plus the whole office politics thing. If anyone found out it could cost him his job, or a promotion. Better to just stay the course. He'll work his way up and he'll find another guy or chick, or whatever."
We talked for a bit longer before I had to drag a panicked kangaroo into the bathroom. He kicked the door closed, almost hitting me with it after breaking free of my arm. He shouted to let me know he made it, but barely. I just sat against the wall next to the door, waiting for him to come back out.
He had been on heroin, so the withdrawals were going to be fun. But the hospital couldn't do anything till they were sure. They could give him Narcan, if someone found him with a needle in his arm. Since we didn't know what he was on at the time they have to wait on tests.
"Hey," Eric said standing at the door.
"Hey yourself Doctor Love."
"One more year of being clinic bitch then yeah, Doctor Love." Eric said with a grin.
He had one more year as an intern before he'd finally be on his own, more or less. Eric worked on the other side of the hospital under a General Practitioner. After serving his time as he called it he would go into the trauma center where he really wanted to work.
"Cant be here to take over already," I said.
"Lunch break, came to check on you and Brian. Get any sleep?"
"He managed to get more than I did. I'm pretty spent at the moment but I'll hold out till someone comes to take over for me."
"Any idea when that will be?"
"Rem is off at five, but so is half of the Seattle area. Might be closer to six by the time I'm free. Doubt I'll be able to drive."
"That sucks, want me to see if Iain can come by and take over?"
"No, Iain doesn't know Brian. Needs to be someone who can put up with his shit."
"Fuck you I heard that!" Brian shouted from the other side of the door.
"I meant for you to hear it asshole!" I shouted back.
"Text Torban then, he might be able to slip out of the gym early."
"Fine," I said pulling my phone from my pocket. I texted him and looked back up at Eric.
"Well I gotta head back, got patients to see to. You can ride with me if you find someone to cover you here."
"Alright sexy Doctor of Love. Love you"
"Love you too Attorney at Pawjobs."
"If I wasn't already sick the two of you would be pushing me over that edge!" Brian called from the bathroom.
Brian stayed in the bathroom for most of the afternoon. He came out long enough for a nurse to check his I.V bag before slinking back inside. Torban showed up just after four so I grabbed my briefcase and coat and made my way down to the front desk.
Eric was going to take me home but I wanted to grab something from the sandwich shop across the street. I forgot about them, which is why I was caught off guard by the old guy yelling me way. My brain didn't register what he said, only that it was his voice and he sounded ticked.
Mister Lewis stood from his seat in the waiting area and quickly closed the distance between us.
"They let Mister fancy big shot stay up there did they?"
"What? Dude, they booted me too, you were there. I've been at that nurse's station this whole time."
"Likely story, faggot city bends over backwards for your kind!"
"Look, Mister Lewis it's been a long day. I'm hungry, I'm tired and I'd really like to not get into it with you right now. Brian is awake, if he says he doesn't want to see you then you should just leave."
The older roo jabbed me in the chest hard with his finger. "Not fucking likely. We're the parents, he's the son. We ain't leaving till we've collected him."
Part of me wanted to just go off on him, but I was spent mentally and physically. "That's between you and him. He's an adult, if you'll excuse me." I said taking a step to the side to move around him. Getting a hard roo kick in the small of my back for my trouble.
My upper body shot forward and I could feel the toes of my shoes grinding over the tile floor as I flew a good three feet through the air before landing hard on my chest. The whole room came to a halt at that. I got an arm under me, pushing myself up.
"Sir, you need to leave the building now or we'll be forced to call the police." A gruff voice behind me said. I looked around for my briefcase, retrieving it from under a bench. Giving a weak smile to the raccoon lady who was sitting on it before struggling up to my feet.
"You go honey, I'll stay here." Misses Lewis said behind me.
I slowly turned to look at them. He looked pissed, but the badger wearing a security uniform wasn't having it.
"Are you okay sir?" a nurse asked.
"I'll be fine, wasn't expecting it but I can manage."
"Want us to hold him till the police get here" the badger asked.
"Don't worry about it, he's not worth my time. Seems to have forgotten I survived being hit by a car a few years back. Sharp kick isn't going to do much." I said before limping away. My knees were banged up, as was my left elbow and my ribs. But I had my pride, and that was what mattered.
"The bastard kicked you?" Iain asked as he placed a plate in front of me.
"Yeah, I've had worse." I said looking over the lasagna that the husky prepared for our dinner.
"You are pretty bruised up," Eric said.
We were naked and my injuries were on full display. The tan fur didn't hide the bruises as much as I'd have liked.
"Torban is going to be pissed." Eric said.
"Of course he is, dude kicked me out of nowhere. Took me from edge of sleep to fully awake in half a second. James will lecture me about that. Just didn't think the drunk bastard would go full on tie me to a fence post and beat me right in the hospital like that."
"Don't joke about that shit," Iain said pulling his ears back.
"Not high school anymore, he could escalate things and shoot you." Eric said flatly.
"Or stab you," Iain added with a whimper.
I sighed, "Guess we'll have to buddy up when we go there from now on."
"Bet your ass you will!" Torban half yelled as he walked into the dining room half naked. Stripping out of his shorts before tossing them to the side.
"Asshole kicked you while your back was turned. You should have known better and so should he. Going to crack that snout of his if I see him." Torban said with a growl.
"Let it go big kitty, not worth getting thrown in jail over. We'll just stick together from now on. Brian will be discharged tomorrow. After that his parents will lose track of him again. They'll go back to Prosser and we can all move on with our lives."
Odds are I wouldn't run into them again. I had to be at the office in the morning. Eric and James were going to take Brian from the hospital back to his place. I'm sure Brian will love that. Staying with a cop and a therapist. Greg was the safest of them, an auto mechanic.
We ate in silence, each of us likely lost in thought about what the future held.
