The focus of this prompt is to do a short story of "about 1000 words" with the prompt "The main character is jaded and cynical, and nothing anyone does surprises them... but eventually something does.".

And here we go!

Jade

As the daughter of an outcast woman of a Salish tribe, Aiyana's life had not been easy growing up poor and hungry in the slums of the Redmond Barrens. Her mother worked whatever jobs she could and, ultimately, had to resort to selling her body just to survive. Once Aiyana was of a decent enough age she was traded to 'professionals' so her mother could try to claw her way out of poverty. Aiyana was left to fend for herself.

The sprawl was not a good place to grow up and anything was better than that, so her new home with her buyers was a step forward... except she was expected to pay her way and, with no real skills, there was only one obvious answer: Aiyana lost her virginity at 12, and it was not an experience she cared to remember. A year later, when she was almost choked to death, she killed one of her Jons in self defense. Shortly thereafter her employers gave her the name 'Jade', and implied that she was of Asian heritage-- all the more mysterious and appealing.

The realization did little to change her lot in life, though it did mean that there were certain 'adjustments' her handlers were required to make. The next two years were spent establishing an equilibrium of sorts-- she spent a lot of it chained down until she could 'learn to control herself' and, she learned, the cost of getting rid of the evidence of her victim meant that her 'caretakers' were adding another four years onto her ten year indentured servitude-- Jade not only had to pay off her mom's debt, but she had gained one as well.

So it was that time passed, and by the time she had turned twenty, Jade had all but given up any hope of any life other than the one she lived. Her 'employer' was a small business that catered to exclusive tastes from a specific kind of clientele, and that meant that they could charge more despite being in the less reputable part of the sprawl. Sometimes her Jons would be nice, and other times not so nice, but those who chose her paid a premium because she was young, pretty, and available for 'anything'. She hated them all.

She belonged to the harem of 'Trogs and Tuskers', a vendor of flesh and sin that advertised as one of the few places in the major Seattle area that catered to all of the needs of Trolls and Orcs, favoring women (and some men) who were able to accommodate the more brutal styles of the often overlooked metas. Aiyana, unlike most of the workers there, occasionally got human clients and, on occasion, an elf; a fine-featured, dark skinned beauty was rare to find, and even some of the more refined Jons would occasionally stoop so low as to visit the Barrens for a taste of what she was forced to offer.

Some might have assumed that the breeders and dandelion eaters would have been the kind ones... the more gentle, or at least accomidating Jons, but they would have been wrong. The Jons that were the most generous, kind, and attentive were usually the Orcs and Trolls-- but they usually annoyed her the most because she could only fake believing empty promises for so long... and they were always empty-- until one wasn't.

Many of Jade's Jons were repeat customers and the vast majority of them, despite how they got around to it, never left before getting a chance to satisfy their carnal desires with her body. Oh, she had a chromed, tattooed, Orc razorguy who had mommy issues and just wanted her to hold him while she sucked on one of her nipples, and there was a Human wage mage who paid for her time so he could use her as some kind of focus for his rituals, but all of them wanted her for their own ends and, more often than not, it was sexual. The exception was a Jon who introduced himself only as 'Lou'.

Lou was a well-dressed Troll who always jandered into the club and he looked as equally likely to be a trideo star as a Lone Star Platnium Package operative. The first time he paid for her he told her simply "We have an hour together... this isn't about what I want, so we will spend it however you wish."

It was one of those lines she was used to hearing from men who didn't know what they wanted, but after she tried and failed all of her usual techniques to 'get it over with', he remained clothed and the hour was up. The second time he met with her she started off trying again, figuring that she just hadn't found the right button but, when they were almost a half hour into it, he grabbed her wrist lightly and reiterated "I am here to spend time with you, yes, but that isn't what I meant."

By that point she had been frustrated. "What do you want, exactly?"

His expression remained neutral as he answered "This is not about what I want. I want to know what YOU want."

Lou had five more visits, during which time she actually came to look forward to seeing him. It was always an hour, and always nothing more than spending time together. During what was to be his final visit, she could tell there was something different. She had chosen to dance for him... nothing risqué or lewd... just moving for the joy of moving, but he seemed distracted. "What's wrong, Lou?"

He looked up, removing his three-hundred-nuyen shades, revealing his olive-green eyes before saying "This is my last time coming here."

She was taken aback, surprised at the abrupt ending to his visits. "Did I... do something wrong?"

His smile was framed by his two large tusks as he slowly shook his head. "No, Jade... you have always done everything right... but I told you that you don't belong here."

Jade was past playing games with him or putting on a show. "Nobody REALLY belongs here."

He reached into his suit and pulled out a cred stick and slotted it into the reader at the foot of Jade's bed; she hadn't recalled the last time she'd seen anyone type in so many digits. He spoke even as he did so. "I spoke with the manager and he told me how much is left on your debt... this should give you enough to get out of here."

She realized he was joking... he had to be joking... didn't he? "What?"

The Troll stood up, putting his shades back on as he returned his credstick to his inner pocket. "Don't use your cred stick at any transport terminals... use this instead."

When his hand came back out of his suit he held in it a small roll of actual script; Jade rarely ever saw paper money, but she recognized the Evo corporate logo. Slowly reaching out, she accepted what must have been a few thousand nuyen equivalent. "I... don't understand."

He gave her a curt nod. "You do not have to, Aiyana."

She almost missed it when he said it, but it was the first time in almost a decade that she heard her real name. Stepping forward, she held out her hand. "Wait!"

He stopped, looking over his shoulder with a large hand on the doorknob. "Yes?"

"Where should I go?"

A hint of a smile appeared on his face. "Wherever you want. Do whatever you want. BE whoever you want."

She had so many questions, but she knew her time was short. "When will I see you again?"

The smile faded. "I do not believe you will, Aiyana."

He opened the door stepped through it. Before it could close, she shouted "Wait!"

He lingered on the other side of the door with it barely open. "My hour is up."

She reached out and grabbed the door before it shut. "Lou-- you always say that our time together is about what -I- want!"

Although the Troll didn't turn around, he also didn't walk off. "What is it you want?"

"I don't want you to leave me."
