Rising Anew Chapter 6

-The leaves swirled in gusts of cold wind, the bare branches of the trees quietly clacked together in the shots of wind. Together, Narcenac and Narina walked silently through the trees, both keeping a watchful eye on the shadows. They both had grown tired of the eternal darkness of this wretched place. The mornful howling and the sound of fighting close by at night had nearly driven them both insane. The only warmth in the dark wet bare landscape was their hold on each other. Down the path they continued when out of no where a silent arrow darted by. The sudden flash of the steal head was all the warning Narcenac had as he pushed Narina to the ground.

"DOWN!!!" He screamed as he dropped to the ground.

The sharp barbs filled the air above them. Their hum buzzing in Narcenac's ears. He looked over at Narina, and his heart stopped.

Protruding from her throat were two of the deadly shafts. Narcenac shook with disbelief and terror at the sight of her blood slowly spreading on the foliage underneath her. He lay there trembling in horror, clasping her paw in his and crying, fresh tears bursting forwarth with each tremor.

A tall Ram walked up to Narcenac and lifted him into the air. Narcenac saw the arrows in Narina's throat were marked exactly like the ones in the ram's quiver. Rage replaced his sorrow as the ram looked him in the eyes and snarled. Six other young males of the same species walked out of the trees.

"You missed this one Grona." a small ram said half annoyed. "Kill him and be done with it."

The tall ram named Grona pulled out a dagger and lifted it high. Without a second to react he looked down as the blood shot from his mouth, Narcenac's claws deep in his chest.

"You... are all going to die. You... are going to pay for killing her." he growled out between his fangs.

Narcenac slammed his other paw into Grona's chest, slowly he pulled with all his stength. He felt the bones in the ram's chest crack and break as he pulled his rib's apart. The blood ran down his arms, but Narcenac didnt notice. He had his eyes on the short one, the one who seemed to be in charge. Narcenac jumped high, grabbing a branch and pushing off of the bottom with his feet, he slammed his claws into a ram that stepped into his path to protect the leader. Digging his claws under the rams shoulder blades he ripped upward. The ram fell forward, his spine reant in two. The other rams circled the little one, attempting to protect him. Narcenac was sure it was him who had ordered the attack, sure it was him who had ordered them killed, sure it was him who ordered the arrows that had taken his world away.

One by one, the rams tried and failed to kill him. One by one they were slaughtered. The small ram ran with all his might as the last guard fell. He ducked into the trees, losing sight of the Demon that had just destroyed his entire party. He looked over his shoulder and thought he was free at last. He slowed to a trot as he relaxed slightly, then suddenly two brilliant glossy purple eyes opened in the darkness in front of him.

The branches shook with the might of the roar that reverberated through the forest, followed by a scream cut short.-

Narcenac sat up bolt straight. He looked over at Narina as she slept on, breathing slowly and fully alive. That dream had felt so real. He felt his matted fur as he grew cold from the sweat covering him. Slowly getting out from under the blanket without waking Narina, he made his way down to the little brook they had found while walking earlier. Silently he washed away the sweat and with it, the memory of that awful dream.

Narina yawned a big loud yawn and stretched happily. She felt very content. Her mind shot to the memories of the last night. It had been the third time that they had made love. Twice the first night, and again last night. "He was amazing." she purred to herself.

Narcenac walked back into the camp carrying a large fish. The left half of its head was a bit flat from the rock he had thrown at it. lugging it over to Narina, he sat down with a smile as she beamed at him. It was so obvious she had enjoyed herself and the look she gave him told him he was going to be in trouble later if he didnt let her have second helpings. With a tug he pulled the fish in half and held the two peices out to her. Taking the remaining half, he quietly ate with a smile.

Narina folded the blanket and stuffed it in Narcenac's bag. Her brush soon made its morning appearance and with it Narina mauled him.

Narcenac sat there with a silly grin as she worked the brush over his tail.

"I must have the fluffiest tail ever." he said with a chuckle.

"Not quite bub. Mine is fluffier." Narina said as she cuffed him playfully between the ears.

Narcenac let his tail wonder around her waist and pulled her closer to him, kissing her quickly. He enjoyed the suprised look in her eyes as it was slowly replaced by a look of pure happiness. Her tail found its way around his and together they sat in this embrace for several minutes.

Letting her go, he said with a grin, "Let's get out of here."

Narina only nodded her eyes still closed from the kiss. She let herself be pulled up to her feet, and walked to the tree where they had left their clothes hanging. Slipping back into her sweater, she hummed quietly. Narina really didnt know how life was going to be much better. She had enough to eat, clothes she didnt need, adventure, and the guy she had always wanted. Everything seemed perfect.

*********************************

The days went on. Soon the trees became thinner and mountains could be seen in the distance. Stretching out in front of them was a vast plain of grass and hills.

Narcenac was nervous. In the forest they had cover, food, water, and shelter. Out here they would be exposed. The deer probably didnt wonder out this far often. The river had long since vanished into the forest to the east. They would have to travel faster to reach the mountains and tree cover again.

Narina looked at the sea of grass waiving in front of her. She was slightly in awe at it. She squinted at the mountains.

"How far do you think it is to those mountains from here?" she asked.

Narcenac pulled out the old map they had brought with them. After a little work unfolding it, he started to slide a claw across to find there place on the map. Finding it he poked the point, forgetting his claws momentarily, and poked a small hole in the map.

"Damn!... i poked a hole in it." he said with a frown.

Narina couldnt help but to giggle at him.

"Dont worry about it. Lets go, i want to camp early to night." she said smiling innocently.

"I bet you do, but we cant stop as long as we did in the forest. There isnt any food or water out here. We are going to have to run until we get to the mountains and some place to hide again." he said knowingly.

He picked up his pack and replaced the map. Slipping his arms through the straps he placed his hand in hers and together the two of them trotted off into the expanse of hilly plains that rolled out before them.
