Ruku's Backstory

Alrighty, so a recent change in my boy Ruku prompted some ideas for a backstory he really REALLY needed. This is it! I'm happy with the idea and overall happy with what I've managed here! The Thumbnail was drawn by a very kind and generous friend on Discord!

This is how Ruku came to be...

SPLASH!!

After a harsh turn to avoid traffic, a poor young Rabbit's car was sent into the deep Ocean. The unfortunate driver was trapped, left to watch as the surface went above him while water slowly began filling the car. The Radio cut out. The Air Conditioner stopped functioning. The Lights all went out, leaving the inside of the car to become eerily dark and silent. Ruku was left with the sound of running water as its chill touched his feet...

"N-no! L-let me out! LET ME OUT!!" The Door Handles moved, but the Door itself wouldn't. No matter how hard he pulled on the Belt or pushed the Button to release it, he remained stuck to his seat as the water inside the car reached his Knees. The brown Bunny tried to lift his legs to avoid the water, but the Seatbelt wouldn't give him the room to do so. The cold Seawater was practically teasing him at this point, threatening to fill the Rabbit's lungs as it was slowly moving up his body towards his mouth.

"O-oh gosh... HEY! HELP!!" His desperate cries for help went unanswered. The water outside became darker. The water's coldness made it to his belly and was slowly moving to his chest. The metal of the vehicle groaned as pressure increased. However, he continued to desperately struggle against his peril with no success. The air started to taste old and used. The Rabbit's lungs started to warm up. A sharp sensation tickled his throat trying to force a cough out of him, but the Bunny fought it just as he was trying to do to the Ocean.

The water found his neck. His maw was raised to face the roof of the car. The Rabbit took the deepest breath he could before he was completely submerged. No matter what he did to the Seatbelt, it wouldn't move. With no other options, he tried to bang on the glass of the Window. Not trying to break it, but rather trying to make some noise, trying to catch the attention of anything and everything that could be around to save him. Meanwhile, his chest started to burn. With each passing second the burn became worse.

The Rabbit's struggles ceased the moment his chest started to convulse. He was forced to shift his priorities to his needy body, holding his own maw shut as best he could while his body was begging for air. His convulsions continued to get worse by the second. The burning in his chest was becoming unbearable, like someone stuck a hot iron in his chest. His chest violently shook as if his lungs were trying to inhale water. It had already felt like so much time had passed, but the Bunny could only hold his breath for so long...

"BLURGLGBL!!" His body forcibly inhaled, filling the poor drowning Rabbit's lungs with cold seawater. The burning in his Lungs became so much worse, like he was swallowing Lava fresh from a recently erupted Volcano. He instinctively clawed at his throat. His breathing started heavy and panicked, slowly losing its tempo with each following breath. The poor Rabbit couldn't even hear the Ocean before or feel its cruel freezing embrace. Before he even knew it, his consciousness faded completely...

"Wake up, Ruku. Wake up..." A beautiful feminine voice lulled him from his slumber. The warmth of the sun coated his damp fur, obstructed only by the strange figure above him. Ruku looked to the figure, soon becoming overwhelmed by her beautiful deep blue eyes, soaking wet ocean blue hair, and her young yet somehow mature face. "A... Mermaid..." was all Ruku could say before the stranger began to fade. A blue-furred hand went out to reach her as she disappeared completely, like the last fragment of a vivid Dream.

From that moment on, the Rabbit that perished in the Ocean would be known as Ruku, a lucky soul that received the Blessing of the Sea Goddess. The blessing covered his body in vibrant oceanic blue. The Sea would no longer try to take him for itself. He was reborn anew...
