Chapter 49: When Love Has Flown

Kilyan felt a burst of overwhelming joy when he walked up the familiar streets of the summer village. Wynn was clinging nervously to his paw, and Avi moved at his side, just as anxious and rustling her wings every now and then. Inden brought up the rear, looking meek under the stares of the summer wolves but trying his very best to appear a warrior not to be reckoned with.

They reached Kilyan's hut as the pearly dawn slowly became the bright blue day, and as if they'd foreseen the future, Kilyan's family came rushing out of the hut: Roan and Zane fought their way out, shoving each other with frantic paws and elbowing each other in the face, then came his wives with beaming faces and open arms. Lea and Ohana bounced up on tiptoe to calmly embrace Kilyan and kiss his cheeks, and Roan and Zane shook their father's paw before breaking down and hugging him tight. Kilyan felt consumed by Zane when his giant son hugged him and laughed at the strength of his great bear of a son.

"Good god," Kilyan said, rubbing his neck. "Be careful when you hug your mothers, Zane!"

Zane laughed, and Kilyan noticed with a sad pang that Zane's voice had deepened into the timbre of an adult's. So had Roan's! He beamed at his sons and wives, suddenly so proud. Then he felt a tug on his tail, and feeling very tender suddenly, he looked around to find Wynn clinging shyly to her father's tail. He brought her forward and introduced her, saying gently to his daughter, "Wynn, these are your brothers: Roan and Zane."

Wynn gazed up at her brothers in awe: they were both so big and tall. She felt dwarfed beside them, especially beside Zane, whose muscle-bound body fascinated her. "Hi!" she squeaked.

Roan and Zane looked at each other, amused. Then Roan knelt down and smiled at his sister.

"Do you like games?" Roan asked Wynn.

Wynn's green eyes widened gleefully and she nodded.

"Then . . . you're It!" Roan cried and bopped Wynn on the forehead. He took off up the street like a little pup.

Kilyan laughed: it was as if he'd brought little Yuri home all over again. Wynn giggled and ran after her big brother, and Zane soon joined in. Kilyan watched with satisfaction as Zane lifted Wynn in the air and spun around with her. Wynn giggled and held out her arms, pretending to fly.

"She's beautiful," Lea said.

Kilyan looked around and felt a warmth in his heart: Lea had taken Avi's paw and they were smiling at each other. Lea had, of course, been speaking of Wynn. Ohana took Avi's paw too, and squeezing it she said, "Welcome to the family!"

Avi seemed pleased and embarrassed by the warm welcome, and she stammered out, "But Avi only stay until wings are healed -- or until Kilyan wives grow sick of her."

They all laughed.

"She has a sense of humor," Lea remarked to Ohana, as if pleased by this.

"And she's very pretty," Ohana added. "No wonder Kilyan loves her!" She caressed Avi's cheek with the back of her fingers.

Kilyan grinned when Avi blushed scarlet.

"You know Kilyan is never going to let you go home, right?" Ohana added in a mischievous whisper. "I don't think I'll let you go either!"

The three females giggled again like girls gossiping on the street corner, and they talked about Kilyan as if he wasn't even there! Before Kilyan had a chance to introduce Inden, Lea and Ohana were leading Avi into the hut. Kilyan exchanged wearily amused glances with Inden and followed them inside.

They all gathered around the fire, where Lea had been preparing breakfast. Lea continued her work, but she, Ohana, and Avi kept up their chatter, giggling and laughing, talking about their children, and sharing anecdotes of their sexual experiences with Kilyan. Kilyan wanted to melt into the floor and die: they said all these things right in front of Inden, who was getting so red in the face he closely resembled an apple.

"Enough!" Kilyan growled out, finally impatient, and the three females looked at him in astonishment.

Lea sniffed as she passed around bowls. "Kilyan, I know you're tired and it's been a long journey, but you raise your voice in here again and this oatmeal will go right in your face!"

"They have to be trained," Ohana told Avi and examined her longs nails. "For instance: Kilyan knows to come home right after patrol everyday. We usually keep him from yelling like that, though." Her pretty eyes slid to their corners and she glowered at Kilyan.

"Will the three of you let me get a word in?" Kilyan begged in exasperation. He took the bowl of oatmeal that Avi passed him and ate gratefully. When he glanced up again, the room had gone silent: Avi, Lea, and Ohana were all staring at him.

"Well?" said Ohana, folding her arms. "We're waiting for your word."

"Very funny," said Kilyan, smiling. He set down his bowl and gestured to Inden, who was seated beside him with his own bowl. "This is Inden, an orphaned prince from across the sea. He'll be staying with us until I can build him a hut."

"Build him a hut? Kilyan, he's just a child!" Lea cried in wonder.

"Lea," Kilyan said, "it's too crowded in here as it is! Avi and Wynn are here now, and you're having a pup, and Zane won't move out straight after the mating season. I haven't even built his hut yet."

"Hmm," said Lea thoughtfully. "Well, in that case, Inden could just move into a vacant hut nearby. That is, after you approach the village council on his behalf -- there's nothing to worry about, Inden," she added, patting the prince's knee when he looked worried. "The village council has let in very bad wolves, and you're a good boy. I can tell."

Inden grunted his embarrassment and kept his eyes fixed on his bowl.

"Now," said Kilyan, his green eyes anxious when he passed his empty bowl to Lea for a refill, "tell me about Enya. What happened? She's home safe, right?"

"Don't be silly, Kilyan," said Ohana sadly. "You know very well Enya can't come back here to live. But, yes, she's just fine. She was here the day before with the others. Everyone made it home safely, and Zaldon took Enya away with him to the sun village. Said he'd come back for Roan in a little bit, after he rested up. Poor Uncle Zaldon. I think magic is aging him faster. They say that can happen. But aside from being tired, he seemed alright."

"That's good to hear," said Kilyan, relieved. "I only wish I could've seen my niece before she was whisked away! I'll have to go with Keeno and Zalia next time they visit her. How are Keeno and Zalia? And my father?"

"Everyone is just fine," Lea assured Kilyan. "Now eat this second bowl and go take a nap. You look like you haven't slept in days!"

Kilyan held down a blush as the hot bowl was pressed into his paws: of course he hadn't slept in days. He'd been sleeping with Avi!

Kilyan later went to bed as Lea had bid him, reflecting with a grim shake of his head that Ohana was right: his wives had him trained well. He'd gone to bed without an argument! But he knew in his heart that it wasn't really because he was trained: it was because he loved his wives more than anything, and pleasing them was his way of showing it, the same way he had always strived so desperately to please his parents.

Some days had passed when Kilyan awoke one afternoon and was startled to find Avi lying beside him. She was dreamily brushing her mane with Ohana's mane brush, her gaze far away and absent. She looked lovely lying there, her body propped up and those stocky, shapely legs stretched away from her and crossed at the ankles. The tip of her tail lashed across the covers, and her little wings were folded behind her. She smiled when she saw Kilyan's eyes flutter open.

Kilyan sat up with a moan and pushed his mane back from his face. The hut was deadly silent.

"Where is everyone?" Kilyan wondered, squeezing his eyes closed as he stretched.

"Ohana and Lea are in pastures. Wynn go with them: want to see sheep and goats. Never seen before. And Kilyan's sons take Inden on patrol with them: they like him a lot."

Kilyan smiled: that was good. He glanced at Avi, who still looked so content and happy in his bed. He thought of taking advantage of her good mood, of convincing her with his touch to stay. Perhaps when he was inside her and they were both locked in that heightened moment of ecstasy, she wouldn't be able to refuse him!

But as if she'd read Kilyan's mind, Avi shook her head, smiled, and said, "Avi happy because she feel she can leave now."

Kilyan slumped back against the pillows. His eyes drifted in defeat to the window. "Why's that?" he asked, trying to sound casual. He didn't want Avi to suspect that he'd been about to make his proposal yet again, but she knew better.

"Wings feel good now. Can flex them without much pain. And after meeting Kilyan wives and sons, Avi see: they all love and care for Wynn like she their own! Avi feel better about leaving Wynn with her father now. Avi happy knowing Wynn will be taken care of." She smiled dreamily again and continued brushing her mane.

Kilyan watched her fondly, then slid his paw across the sheets and tangled his fingers with hers. "Avi . . . I want you to stay."

"Avi know. But Avi going to fly home when the moon rises. Will be big moon. Will be able to see clear as day. Won't take long reaching jungle."

Kilyan swallowed thickly, holding back the urge to protest. "Then," he said, squeezing her paw, "I have to touch you . . . one last time. Come here, Avi!"

Avi gasped when Kilyan snatched the mane brush and threw it aside. The urgent need in his eyes, the hunger startled and aroused her. She cried out his name, incredulous but pleased, when he pulled her fast into his embrace. He had pulled her with him under the covers in seconds, and in seconds, their moans were filling the room as his muscular back moved in slow rhythm to get inside. Avi lay under Kilyan, clinging so tight to his back that he hissed in pain when the nails sank, cutting his flesh. But he didn't care. He closed his mouth over hers and kissed her deeply, whispering between breathless moans that he loved her, had probably always loved her and had been too stupid a fool to realize it. He was shocked, therefore, when Avi started to cry.

"Avi!" Kilyan cried, peering down at her anxiously. He paused his deep and careful thrusts, but Avi shook her head frantically, and grabbing his hard buttocks in fistfuls, she jerked her hips against him, smashing that wet pussy over him hot and tight and making his arms tremble from the pleasure of it.

"Oh, god, Avi, this is torture -- please stay!" Kilyan moaned, burying kisses in her neck as her little hips kept up their steady jerks.

Their bodies twisted in one fluid motion, and Kilyan sighed when Avi's great soft mounds blushed hot and feverish against him. She looked so beautiful twisting beneath him, this tender little thing whose love he had yearned for, whose eyes he had never been able to erase from his mind. This was love. He loved her so deeply, as deeply as he loved his wives. What could he do, what could he say to make her stay with him forever? His mind flew into a panic to think she was going to walk out that door the minute the sun sank beyond the sky, the minute he fell asleep after their careful and tender love making. He knew he must stay awake to keep her here -- even if just for another day -- but he was already so damned tired. . . . and Avi knew it.

"Avi . . ." Kilyan whispered as the room steadily darkened, as Avi's tears glistened in the gloom. "It doesn't have to be this way! You don't have to cry because you can stay here with me!"

"Avi c-can't!" whispered the little queen, and her voice broke.

Kilyan kissed her -- her eyes, her lips, her cheeks -- hoping miserably to make those tears go away. But Avi broke down sobbing and threw her arms around his neck. He stopped thrusting and held her tight, lovingly rubbing his big paws up and down her slender back to comfort her, and they stayed that way until the sun went down.

When Kilyan opened his eyes again, the room was almost pitch black. Avi was still curled in the bed, snuggled against him, her cheek against his sculpted chest. He carefully laid her aside and sat up, fumbling on the bedside table to light a candle.

With the sudden seed of light cutting the darkness, Avi came awake too. She slowly sat up, pushing her mane back and blinking at the window. It was time.

"Will I ever see you again?" Kilyan asked, catching Avi's paw as she was rising from the bed. He looked up at her in earnest, drinking in her face, memorizing the way she looked exactly -- ha. As if he could forget.

Avi gave Kilyan a twisted smirk, reminding him suddenly of Wynn and the teenage virgin princess he'd known ten years ago.

"If Kilyan ever get abducted again," was the answer.

Kilyan laughed in spite of everything. "Avi! Tell me you'll come visit us! Tell me you will!"

"Avi won't make promises she can't keep. Being queen, it keep Avi put for years, Kilyan. Avi know it will. Otherwise . . . Avi would have come to Kilyan a long time before Wynn ran away."

They smiled at each other. Avi turned away, and Kilyan could see that her wings were fully mended now. There were no holes in them whatsoever. But it was still a little painful for her to move them, and she fluttered them stiffly as she walked to the curtain. Kilyan sat up in the bed, thinking with a heavy heart that this just might be that last time he would ever see Avi: she didn't sound confident that she would be able to come back.

Avi paused beside the curtain, and when she looked back, Kilyan realized she was doing what he had been doing moments before: she was memorizing his face! His body, his eyes, his chest -- her black eyes traced over all of him. She smiled fondly as if she was remembering something -- perhaps the first time they met -- then she disappeared behind the curtain. Minutes later, Kilyan heard the wild rustling of wings and the gasps and shrill cries of wolves in the streets. A chilling howl split the night: the farewell cry of the warrior queen. He smiled sadly as he rested back on his pillows: Avi had just flown out of his life.
