Following the Beacon's Glow.
As two men try to rekindle their love for each other, they become separated in a forest. But they won't escape entirely unscathed...
Made a bit as a dare for Leo_Todrius, this is the first time I've written smut. And while altogether I enjoy what I produce, I don't think I'll write some again in the forseeable future.
But hey, if you love fireflies, enjoy !
"I hate my job." thought Dan. He was sitting in a stuffy office, typing some code that his boss will end up either using without crediting him or criticizing because of some stupid made-up rule that he would invariably make up on the spot. Actually, Daniel loved coding, seeing all the different lines activate harmoniously to achieve some great result just like clockwork. But this work atmosphere was choking the life out of him. His complexion had become an unhealthy pale color, and his eyes were bloodshot. But worst of all was the sad look of pity on his boyfriend's face every time Dan went home. Already his pounding headache was accompanied by that familiar and bittersweet memory of Max's face frowning, his eyes almost crinkling in disgust and sadness at what was happening to him. Dan scoffed, threw his chair back and logged off after saving his work. It was already late, and he was working unpaid overtime, so it wasn't as though he had any obligation to be here at this moment. Then, he simply left the building and headed home by foot, hoping that the cooling summer evening air could help with his migraine.
Dan finally made it home, and just tiredly looked for his keys in his pocket, but before he could open the door, the lock clicked and the door swung open to reveal the broad chest of Max, Dan's partner. They were the perfect example of opposites attract: Max was tall, broad-shouldered, and had a chiseled face with long dirty blond hair and brown eyes; he looked like a stereotypical Viking and metal music lover, with tattoos all over his arms and some even peeking out from the small shirt he was wearing. By contrast, Dan was short and appeared like the cliche of the office worker, with short, slick black hair, glasses over dark eyes, and everything screamed orderly about him, even down to his clothes. And yet, when the two of them met at a gay bar around two years ago, they had become fast friends, and later, lovers, even moving in together a couple months ago.
"There you are! I've got a surprise for you! Now ditch those city clothes and put on something more outdoorsy!" Max cried exuberantly.
"Max, please, I've got a headache, can't we do this later...?"
"Oh no you don't, it's happening right now, like it or not!" Despite himself, Dan started to smile a bit. Max's good nature was very contagious, and he could never say no to this gentle giant. So, while Dan climbed up the stairs of their apartment building, Max hauled a very large and heavy cooler into the Jeep parked in front of the building. Another pair of bags went in, containing a tent and some other camping equipment and Max wiped his forehead of sweat. Just then, he felt observed; he turned around to see that Dan had merely stripped down into a white tank top and a baggy pair of cargo shorts, while wearing the necklace Max had bought him in their trip to California (Which was also the only moment Dan's job had given him time off). He looked a little like a nerd, but that was also what had drawn Max in: beneath that scrawny exterior, lies a smart, beautiful and compassionate beast. And even if his job was slowly killing him, there was a spark that still remained, and which refused to bow down. It was only temporary, and it paid well, so until then, Max would endure the sight of Dan coming home exhausted. Except today.
"You look good in these clothes."
"You think? I don't know, man, I feel underdressed." replied Dan.
"Trust me, no one will notice enough to care, nor care enough to notice. Besides, you look... relaxed. Maybe you should do that more often."
"I try to, but my boss- "
"No no no! I don't want to hear it. It's our time off, so I'll take you somewhere. My treat."
"As long as I get to spend more time with you, you can fly me to the moon." Max smirked, and gestured at the car: "Your carriage is waiting, my liege."
After about an hour and a half, the Jeep and it's two occupants finally arrived at their destination: the regional park where Max worked as a park ranger. The car turned off the road into the ranger booth, where Max cheerfully waved at the woman manning the station by herself. There weren't many people in the park at the time, so Max coming in had been the peak of her activity. Nonetheless, soon the Jeep was rolling around some dirt paths towards the lake. Once there, Max and Dan unloaded the cooler and the bags, and headed over to some picnic tables set up around the reservoir. All the while, Dan had a huge grin on his face. It couldn't have been easy to keep a surprise picnic a secret, because Max was always very open and outwardly. But so far Dan was blown by all the effort that had gone in the preparation - Max even remembered his cucumber allergy and made separate sandwiches for them. It was very sweet of him, and he really felt like he was rekindling the passion that had somehow been snuffed between the two men. It almost brought tears to his eyes.
"So, what do you think? We have the lake, the view, the sunset, the food, and you have a personal wildlife expert at your disposal for the whole night!" Max grinned triumphantly.
"Max, I... That's perfect. Thank you so much." Dan kissed Max on the lips, a bold gesture for a quiet guy like him, and Max returned the affection by embracing him in a bear hug and spinning on the balls of his feet. Once that tender moment had gone by, both sat down and started eating their food, enjoying each other's company. A couple times Max pointed in the distance to some birds and said "Look, a great heron!" or "hey, it's a spotted owl!". They chatted about Max's duties as a park ranger, helping to educate parkgoers about proper habits to have to maintain this place as wild and natural as possible, and some instances where Max had actually interacted with animals. Finally, it came time to set up the tent and prepare for the night. And that was where things got complicated...
"Pass me that pole, would you?"
"Hang on, my foot is stuck in the folds of the tent..."
"Hey, I need the pole to raise the tent, could you give it to me?"
"I can't, I'm trying to get my foot out!"
"Woah, don't struggle so much, I almost fell over!"
"I almost got it... Hey, don't shove like that!"
"I fell over because you were agitating like crazy!"
"Hey look, a firefly."
That last comment swept Max off his feet a second time, though not literally. He looked up, with a confused expression, to see Dan had stopped doing anything and was staring at the treeline. Except...
"Where did you see it?" Startled, Dan turned to face Max with an equally confused expression, and pointed to a specific tree a couple hundred yards away.
"It was near that tree... Didn't you see it?" Max scanned the tree line, but couldn't find anything. No familiar blinking lights, not even a reflection.
"I can't see it... Are you sure you saw it and not just some reflection on your glasses?"
"Yeah, I'm sure... I'm sure..."
"Hey" Max took his lover's face in between his hands, and knelt. "If you're sure you saw it, then I believe you. Maybe it just went behind the tree." Dan slowly nodded, as though to convince himself of this fact. It was possible, after all, since he was trained to respond to blinking lights and treat it as a problem, whereas Max had been practically living with them for some time, so he was used to them.
"Now then, we should hurry, it's almost nighttime, and we still have to set up the tent."
"Right."
A minute later, with the renewed efforts and concentration of the pair, the little two-person tent was finally up. Max went to secure the food scraps in the Jeep, while Dan unrolled the sleeping beds. Just as the safe was locked, Max heard Dan scream again "There it is again, that firefly! It's right there!" But by the time Max looked, it had disappeared again.
"This is bizarre... Plus fireflies aren't exactly rare around here, so why can't I see them?"
"C'mon Max, it's getting away! Let's chase it!" And with that, Dan dropped everything and charged straight at the forest. Max was shocked to see this behavior in Dan; what had gotten into him? He almost wished to have the old Dan back, with all the fatigue and the predictability. Nevertheless, Max grabbed a flashlight and ran after him, guided by the sound of Dan's footsteps echoing between the trees.
"Dan, come back, you're gonna get lost in the dark!"
"But I almost got it... So close..."
"Dan, there is no firefly! I can't see it! Come back!"
"But it's right there... It's calling to me..." At that moment, the mounting sense of dread in Max's chest turned into panic. Something was wrong, horribly wrong, and Dan didn't seem to notice it. Max was now running full tilt, screaming "DAN!" over and over. In his terror, he tripped on a root and fell on the forest floor, scraping his knees and arms and breaking the flashlight, which flickered and died. Now plunged in total darkness, Max yelled one more time "DAN!!!", but this time no one answered. All he could hear was the sound of his own breath, and the chirp of the crickets.
"Keep it together Max... You just have to find him in those woods... at night... without any light. No big deal." He slowly stood up, and after picking up the remains of the flashlight in a reflex gesture to avoid polluting, took a deep breath to steady his nerves and started to walk slowly while keeping a close eye on the ground to check for tracks. Fortunately, in his haste to chase the non-existent firefly; Dan had left quite an obvious trail to follow. The job was made even easier when Max's eyesight became accustomed to the dark.
The trail led to a small clearing... Well, clearing wasn't the right word, more like a ring of trees. But what grabbed Max's attention was the fact that light was spilling out of it. That, plus the fact that Dan's trail led directly in there. So Max ducked behind a tree and peeked out of the side. The light made it easy to see what was happening, but it was just plain mind-boggling. More importantly, it was wrong.
There was Dan, in the center, extending his arms as though to bask in the starlight, but instead of birds, there was... nothing. Or rather, there were only some black dots that were flying around. At first, Max dismissed them as merely a trick of the light, but then he realized those dots were real... They were insects, buzzing around him, landing on him, crawling all over him. Now Max didn't have a problem with creepy crawlies going all over him, but this was way too much for him to handle, let alone Dan. Plus, they seemed to move almost like they were connected by a hive mind, like waves just coming and going. After a while, Dan's tank top came off, and what Max saw made him want to scream in horror. The insects were all over his body, coming in and out of his clothes, and injecting some kind of glowing substance into Dan. The substance glowed within him, outlining all his blood vessels with each heartbeat. Now Max understood, with a sick wrench of his heart, that those insects were fireflies. But even with all that was happening, seeing Dan's body sent confusing signals through his brain... And he couldn't help but feel aroused. This was wrong, but it felt so... so good and pleasing...
Before he could even stop to think about it, Max's hand drifted to his groin, and he started to rub himself, moaning softly. He admired the contrast brought by the lit veins on Dan's body, which really accentuated his abs. Slowly, Dan turned to face Max's direction, and Max could see that his lover's eyes had gained the same light that a firefly would emit. But even seeing how Dan had changed, Max couldn't help but think that this whole thing was so hot. Again, he palmed his groin and moaned, louder than before. This time, Dan had obviously heard him.
"Max... It's incredible. Come into the stars, you gotta see this for yourself man."
"The stars...? Dan, baby, what are you talking about?" Dan looked a bit lost at first, like he had forgotten his lines in a play, but soon he looked back at Max.
"It's starlight... The fireflies come from the starlight. It's why they glow."
"No Dan, it's wrong... you've changed." Dan merely smirked and strode over to Max, groping his package through the shorts.
"Oh? Well, care to explain why you got hard on me?" Several insects immediately crawled over to Max, climbing on his massive form and slipping under his shirt. Max was too far in lust to defend himself properly, giving a couple attempts to dislodge the invaders, but soon he forgot about them completely as Dan expertly fondled him to bring him closer to the edge. Max squirmed in his grip, before suddenly picking him up and kissing him hungrily, sloppily. It wasn't the same kiss as before, from two people in love, but now it was between two people in heat. The swarm soon engulfed them both, freely coming and going between the two thrashing bodies. As Max returned the grope, he could also feel the little bites from the fireflies, and he knew that he was too far gone now to go back.
Not that he wanted to. He would do anything, as long as Dan was with him. That reasoning was the main drive of Max's life, but right now, he was so in lust that he could barely form a sentence.
After a hot minute of kissing, Max started to go down, teasing Dan's nipples with his tongue before heading even deeper and actually reaching the waistband of Dan's shorts. Reverently, he unbuttoned it and drew it away to reveal Dan's cock. His eight-inch, throbbing, glowing cock. The little voice in his head that was screaming about the wrongness of it all slowly faded away in his mind, until all he could think of was Dan's cock. Slowly, he took the member in his mouth, fondling Dan's balls with one hand while still pinching a nipple with the other, and Dan basked in the wave of pleasure that came over him. Using barely a couple sentences, he had managed to seduce a big, strong masculine man to submit to him... no, to them. To the swarm. His hands clasped across Max's head, and accompanied its bobbing movements on his dick. It felt good... he moaned loudly and lewdly.
Max felt himself changing with every bite, and even without seeing them he knew his veins and eyes were filling with the phosphorous juices. He only groaned in bliss at the image, no longer repulsed. He welcomed the changes, as he and Dan both became something more than human. Everything around him - Dan's hands, the fireflies, Dan's cock, the forest floor on his knees - heightened his pleasure, and his right hand once again drifted to his groin, but this time he opened the fly and fished his cock out. The rigid member started to leak precum already, but as Max started to stroke himself, the precum started to glow, more and more, until the glow permeated through the entire member and Max now had a glowing rod. Dan peaked in his pleasure, still skirting the edge of orgasm, and started to drip glowing precum as well. Max just kept on sucking, drinking the fluids. It tasted like an odd combination of spicy and acidic... something Max would associate with medicine. And still he kept stroking, and gulping, and the fireflies kept injecting the venom. Now both men had almost all their veins mapped out in glowing liquid, and that's when the changes started in earnest.
Dan felt it first. His skin seemed to ripple and layer itself. Those layers were more leathery, but they soon took on a harder consistency. The glowing veins had disappeared, and his whole physiology morphed from human to something else. Dan's form bulged again, and seemed to stretch from both ends; body mass was pulled over his ass to make an abdomen, while still more stretched behind his head to form a long and thin rounded spike, connecting his shoulders and back. The newly created abdomen wasn't long, reaching to knee length, and at an angle from the body; it filled with phosphorous liquid, the same color as that of a firefly. Gossamer wings sprung from the shoulder blades, with huge elytra covering them. Dan's sides shook violently, before new limbs grew out. They were almost identical to the ones he already had, and his altered mind took control of them with ease, as he took Max's shirt off. Now shirtless, Max finally looked up from the cock he was thoroughly sucking, to gaze at Dan's face. He looked so alien, with his skin entirely replaced and his eyes shining in the dark, like beacons; but at the same time, it was still a face he recognized, with that familiar little nick on the nose. But now, those alterations only made Dan look hotter, sexier, more powerful. On Dan's end, seeing Max shirtless, his forest of chest hair out in the open, sucking his cock so urgently finally pushed him over the edge. He climaxed, groaning, as glowing seed was forced down Max's throat. Max tried to keep up with the flood, relaxing his throat, but still some spilled out of his mouth, leaving trails of greenish phosphorescent cum dripping from his beard on his chest.
It was Max's turn next. Once more, the skin added on itself, before hardening like chitin. But where Dan had evolved wings, Max seemed to remain grounded. His entire body gained ridges, all the way to the point of almost segmenting his entire body. The lower part of his back stretched downwards, making an abdomen which started glowing, and extra arms pushed out of his sides. While Dan had become a firefly, Max was some sort of glow worm.
With all that stimuli, Max couldn't hold off any longer. With one mighty jerk, his cock spasmed and glowing cum spurted out, covering the forest floor. That orgasm sealed the deal for both Max and Dan; no longer were they simply humans, they had evolved beyond that. Dan spread his wings and beat them, lifting himself off the ground. Max stood up and, after discarding his clothes, followed Dan through the trees, guided by his light.
Nobody ever heard of them ever again. Their tent and Jeep were picked up a few days later, and after a week or so the search party was called off. But during the nights, some park rangers reported seeing... something, in the woods. Like two immense fireflies, with glowing abdomens, embracing. But every time they tried to approach the couple, the lights would vanish, and they'd be left in the dark - well, not exactly the dark. There are still some stars shining out there...
