On the Rim, Ch 15: Golden "Myra" Shamrock
Welcome to Chapter 15 of "On the Rim"! This is a short story series based on a computer game I am playing called "Rim World". Rim World is a really cool indie game that accommodates an amazing array of mods that allow me to create a setting very similar to my story world in which several of my stories take place including "Fathom's Phantoms", "The Farlight Initiative", an "Paid in Kind".
This is the first chapter focused on Golden Shamrock, aka "Myra". We get a peek into her personality and a bit of her past as we learn about the goings-on around the cave system and what's happening next. What IS happening next? Why, focusing on the away team, of course! But whose perspective will we get? Here are the options:
A) Missy handles the scouting of the group along with Roscoe and then, upon arriving at the site, gets into position to tackle whatever awaits them. Something definitely does.
B) Duct-Tape maintains peace in the group and accompanies the security force with the intention of making sure everyone stays safe. He definitely has quite the job cut out for him.
C) Claw, as officer in charge, directs the group and chooses to be the one to spring the trap, if that's what it is. It is.
D) Leo attempts to prove his worth as a go-to security guy; he works on building his security cred and goes a long way toward succeeding... but at what cost?
Voting won't be available long and no, the decision won't change the events of the story, just how they're presented along with who we get to learn more about via their point of view.
Thanks for reading, and I hope you enjoy "On the Rim"!

Myra liked to think of herself as a Rhino of depth; she was a multi-faceted gem when it came to motivations, actions, drives, and influences. She grew up as little more than a slave, but in her recent years she'd been well-received by anyone for whom she cooked. She enjoyed being female, but she couldn't stand being a 'girly girl'. She was a woman, but she was no lady. Chuckling at that last thought, the Rhino woman focused on putting in a good day's worth of work in the cave system kitchen.
The sudden cold snap in the area wasn't abnormal for Planet A, per se, but for the dozen-or-so years she'd called it home she didn't usually recall the weather turning quite so early in the season. The continent on which she'd lived was relatively temperate, but it was also close to the planet's equator, meaning the 'winters' were usually just referred to as 'crisp'. The residents of the cave system she'd joined, survivors of one of the pirates' most recent raids, didn't quite think of it the same way.
As she spent the morning working on stocking up the settlement's ready-to-eat food, the Overseer guided a work project to make sure that everyone's bedrooms had a heating control unit that they could use just in case it got much colder. A similar one was set up in the guest quarters, the infirmary, and the work area, which also served as the communal dining room. Myra thought a few times about telling the work group that a heater wouldn't be a big deal for her, but she decided to let it go; being thought of as 'part of the group' wasn't normal for her in most situations so she didn't want to rock the boat.
As noon came and went, Myra took a short break from cooking when she heard that the work crew was done with the heaters and had some resources to move; she'd never had a problem with labor and it gave her time to interact a little with some of her new fellows. While it was readily evident to her that she and her two fellow ladies were vastly outnumbered by the men of the group, she felt perfectly at home among the sea of testosterone; she could lady-watch like the best of them and, if she had to make a bet, she was willing to guess that she'd probably wrecked more pussy than most of the men among the camp.
It was, in her opinion, another level of her depth. While she'd been called a 'butch' before, the vast majority of people would have identified her as a 'regular gal'-- neither too macho, nor too prissy. Sure, she was flagrant and unapologetic tomboy but she also enjoyed traditionally 'girly' stuff too. Still, she had no interest in men, identifying with them more than her female counterparts-- guys for company, and gals for "company". It was the only real unpleasant prospect about the Relegra folks: the hottest chick in the group had already been snatched up by one of the security guy and the other was the group's Overseer; one thing Myra had learned in her 47 years was to NOT mess with the boss.
The 'social interaction' wasn't any great price to pay for the improved living conditions however, and she didn't regret her decision to join one bit. The cave system allowed everyone a the site to have their own private room, which was a nice change from the communal bunkhouse back at her old base and, truth be told, she liked the simple accommodations; the folks back at the LLC were always so worried about 'sprucing it up' or 'making it nice' and the statues, hardwood floor, potted plants, and intricately carved furniture always made Myra feel like she was in a museum, not a bedroom. She was a big girl, and if she had to worry about breaking something then her stress level couldn't go down.
The early afternoon came and went with the group sticking to their assigned projects and, from as much as Myra could tell, made a lot of progress. There was a brief interruption mid-afternoon when some tribesmen showed up. The Rhino recognized one of them but it was in passing; she rarely ever interacted with anyone outside the LLC and after joining the survivors of the destroyed Relegra ship she didn't see that changing any time. Sure, she liked meeting new people, but she wasn't exactly an extrovert, and getting to know the people around her better was more important in her mind than being introduced to random strangers.
Based on the discussion she overheard from the security team, however, the tribals did some light trading, and then informed the group about a cargo container making planet fall a short ways to the southeast of the settlement site; they were from parts further north and tended to avoid out world items, but they wanted to be good neighbors. The Badger didn't seem to agree with the assessment, suggesting that it was probably a trap of some type, but, then again, it wasn't his call.
The Overseer elected to have it looked into but, since it wasn't specifically a military action, she elected to send out an exploratory crew and keep the highest ranking security officers at base. Duct-Tape, Missy, Leo and the Badger were sent out to retrieve it, and the tail-less wolf that always followed Missy around was apparently included in the expedition as well; he seemed to be the Lynx's shadow, and he rarely if ever listened to anyone else so it only made sense.
Myra was there when the expedition group left since she'd packed up two days worth of meals (not that they'd need more than one but she always thought it best to be prepared. As with many other times when corp officers and corp security interacted, the departure was not without some drama. The Lion, who seemed to be more interested in relaxing when at the base, took an opportunity to show everyone a poker table he'd fabricated with some spare stone and a bolt of fabric but Captain Archie was not impressed-- more specifically, the Dog used the words "waste of resources" and "you should have better things to do". The Overseer, for once, actually agreed with the Captain. Leo left, dejected. Myra returned to the kitchen shortly thereafter.
Just before nightfall the Rhino was called out of her work space and into the open clearing outside the cave system; the Overseer was waiting for her, and so were three representatives from the LLC she'd abandoned in favor of the Relegra survivors' base. Myra was not looking forward to the interaction, but she was a big girl and she decided to handle it like she handled everything else: head on. The leader of the three visitors was named Zina, and she was a bitch-- literally and figuratively.
The always-in-charge Collie was her usual 'pleasant' self. "Overseer Simpson tells me that you decided to accept an invitation to join this settlement."
Myra didn't owe the self-righteous cunt any explanation but she was happy to come up with excuses. "When I found out that Leo was staying with these folks it made more sense than trying to get back to you alone."
Zina frowned. "Leo, I understand, but I thought you were committed to your position with the Union?"
The Rhino quickly lost the will to hold back. "If I remember right, before we left you said that I was a useless pile of fat that ate up way more than I contributed. I guess you guys ran out of quality food and now you have to put up with Ricky's cooking? Kinda changes your opinion on the matter, don't it?"
Too late, Myra realized just how bad the argument probably made her look to her new group and, for just a second she balked when Overseer Simpson glanced her way and looked back to the Collie. The Human woman was perfectly diplomatic when she noted "I wasn't aware that Myra left you unexpectedly. I apologize if it caused any strain for your daily operations..." The Rhino grit her teeth as she waited to hear the Overseer hand her back over to the Collie-- but that wasn't how it turned out. "...however, I do not consider personnel as a viable option for 'asset transfer', and as long as Ms. Shamrock's contract with Relegra remains in good standing, then I will have to request that you acknowledge her as one of my employees, and treat her with respect."
Myra honestly couldn't remember the last time she appreciated a woman so much outside of the bedroom. The Rhino had never liked being beholden to a female boss, but if Ms. Simpson continued to prove herself as such a worthwhile ally she would have to make an exception. Before Zina could interject, a sudden stroke of inspiration took her. "But, Zina... I'm sure Overseer Simpson might be willing to provide you some meals to go if you ask nicely... or had something to trade.
Ten minutes later the group from the Union headed back toward home without Myra, and the Rhino was all smiles because the Overseer had asked HER to get the meals together. Although Myra didn't know everything there was to know about everything she always took special care to know peoples' food preferences and Zina was probably the most frustratingly self-centric diner on the planet; she hated at least a dozen different foods an couldn't even stand the smallest amount of spicy heat in her meals. The Rhino spent all night laughing to herself about the full collection of peppers in each and every single dish she'd sent home with them.
