Silver and Gold – Lost – ch 3
#3 of Silver and Gold
The shrill sound of my phone disturbed my slumber, I had been awake for a while but only in-between that blissful state of sleep and conciseness drifting in and out of forgotten dreams, taking the annoying but useful thing in hand for it to only fall from the table when I tried to take hold of it. I had a paw.
I had noticed that when I was under a lot of stress I would sometimes change when I slept but when I woke up I felt much better and more relaxed. Looking at the rest of me and sighing as I looked at my furry self, why am I able to do this? Far as I know mum or dad could not and I cannot remember being bitten by anything when I was little, so why me?
My phone had finished it little greeting so I curled into a nice ball and just rested, thinking about what to do today but not really coming up with any ideas. Something caught my attention in the light of the early mooring making itself known as the day began through my window, it was back.
It's brilliant golden eyes started at me through glass as I stared back with equal intensity, a growl started to grow as I slowly unfurled myself to stand at eye level at it, my growling grew deeper as it started to resonated deep within my chest, the sound was bouncing all around my room, it felt like the whole place was vibrating!
"JAYSON! What's going on? Are you ok?" the sound of my mother and father running around upstairs made my head snap away from the window but when looked back it was empty.
"Jayson open the door!" I QUICKLY change and unlocked the door.
"Jayson are you ok?" Dad burst in scanning the whole room looking for something, quickly flowed by mum who just flung herself around me tightly.
"Y-yeah I'm fine! It was just my phone on my desk, that's all" I knew they wouldn't buy it but it was something that sounded more than half reasonable then me growling at a giant bipedal Doberman.
"Well as long as you're ok!" mum just held onto me tightly, what the hell was going on here, any normal parent would be shouting to keep the noise down but they burst into my room looking for something or someone, something is going on here and I'm in the middle of it.
Dad was still looking around the room but let out a relived sigh when he saw nothing, patting me on the shoulder and giving me loving smile as he passed to go back upstairs quickly followed by mum who had just given me kiss on the cheek. I could hear them talking as they went upstairs but could not make anything out.
"What was all that about?" I said as rubbed the spot when I had been kissed while I walked into the bathroom. Once again something caught my attention out of the corner of my eye, my eyes!
They were giving off a soft glow, instead of their normal baby blue colour they were mainly silver with a few flecks of blue and the silver glow just made them stand out more so against my black hair. They were similar in the way they glowed to the Doberman's but they were silver, I continued to look at them until something scared me more than anything else, mum and dad they must have seen but why didn't they say anything.
Did they know what I was and what I could do or where they just waiting for me to tell them? Either way they seemed very concerned and protective over me. What had got them so worried?
As I continued to think and stare at myself I noticed that my eyes where slowly starting to return to their normal colour and the soft glow had all but disappeared, rubbing my hand under my chin and feeling the rough hair I decided to have my shave as there was not much point in even trying to go back to sleep as it was 8.24 am.
I collected the necessary objects and started my twice weekly ritual of shaving, wetting my face, applying the funny smelling froth and bringing the blades to my chin and sides removing the annoying hair, the joys of puberty.
After my shave I had a quick shower but all the while I was still thinking about mum and dad but why had that dog thing come back, was it watching and if so how long had it been watching me this morning. Shivers ran up my spine as that thought ran through my mind as the warm waters fell and moved down my frame.
It was nearly 9 am and time for breakfast, I put off having it at 8.30 as of the nature of this morning walk up call but more so the awkwardness of the lie I told that was as clear as day, knowing I could not prevent it indefinitely. I dried myself and got dressed in the same shorts and shirt as last night.
"Good morning" the both said as I walked into the kitchen.
"I put your clothes in the drier last night; they should be dry by now"
"Thanks mum" I was taken aback a little that they had not brought up what had happened earlier, had they bought the lie?
"So what are you doing this fine day?" dad asked as he handed me a large cup of tea as I took a seat at the table still waiting for a barrage of question but nothing.
"Not sure but I was thinking about going to the shops and looking for some new clothes and stuff for school"
"Sounds like a plan, when were you thinking of going?"
"In a couple of minutes or so, just so I have some time to look around and that" when I finished he quickly got up and left the room leaving me and mum wondering what he was doing, just quickly as he left he returned and handed me a envelope.
"That is for dragging you out here and it might help with some new clothes" I slowly opened the envelope.
"DAD! You can't there must be about 100 ponds I mean dollars hear!"
"You can and you will! And anyway we want you out the house so we can finish sorting out this lot" he said as he motioned to the pile of boxes in the living room.
"Thank you!" I wrapped my arms around him lifting him into the air hugged him tightly, then dropping him down gently and rushing over to mum doing the same getting a squeak in the process. It was easy to lift them as I was the tallest and strongest in the house not that I used it against them.
I quickly left the kitchen for my room via the laundry room to get my clothes, it didn't take long for me to get changed and ready for the day of spending, sighing to myself as I took the British ponds out and put the American dollars into my wallet as I re-entered the kitchen.
"So what time do you think you will be back?"Mum asked as she handed dad a plate of toast which he took quickly whilst giving me a look of suspicion.
"Um about 2 or 3 and don't worry your toast is quite safe"
"Ok just don't spend too much and have fun" making sure I had my wallet and my trusty shoulder bag I left after hugging them both as we both said are good bye's.
The shopping centre was huge it had all sorts of shops and things for sale from clothes to battered sausage on a stick, 'corn dogs' I think that's they are called, strange. I continued to look around more so for the interest factor than looking for stuff to. I had all ready got some new clothes which were a bit pricey but I was going to make them last, I had got some new pens and equipment for school, it was only 12.34.
So I just wondered around looking at all the shops, what they sold and getting the odd bite to eat. I sat down at one of the many benches and started to enjoy the large salad I had got myself, continuing to look around and observe people around me go about their business until I heard crying.
There was a young girl in the middle of the seating area wondering around calling for mummy, she must have been about five or six, she had a light blue dress with pink flowers around the edges with her light mousey hair in a long plait but no one was doing anything to help her, they would notice her but not do anything to help and just ignore her. Now I hate to see anyone sad or upset but when it's a small child and no one looks like there are going to help her it just pains me to see it, she a little kid for god sake.
I quickly packed up my salad and put it into my bag, where I was sitting was overlooking the seating area with the little girl, I moved the stares and made my way down all the while looking for any sign of her mother.
"Hello there, have you lost your mummy?" I said as I crouched down so I was at her level, she looked at me with her large green tear filled eyes and nodded slowly with her red puffy cheeks from where she had been rubbing her eyes and crying.
"Do you want me to help you find your mummy?" she nodded again as more tears fell.
"Come then let's go and have a look shall we" offered my hand to her and gave a warm smile which intern made her smile slightly as she slowly and warily took my large hand in hers.
"My name is Jayson what's yours?" I gave her another warm and friendly smile.
"S-Sophie" she gently squeaked.
"Well it's very nice to meat you Sophie! Now let's go look for your mummy!" she gave me a small smile.
We walked to the one of the larger well known shops and I asked if I could see the manager, they gave me a funny look but did so. The manager a very rotund 30 something year old man came and I asked him if there was any way for a message to go out about a lost child, it took me several tries to find out her last name as when the manager asked she just clung to me tightly and started crying again. When I manage to get her last name I passed it onto the manager who called security. While me and Sophie waited in the staff room for her mother and we started talking about all the things she liked and what she did at school.
"You sound funny" she gave a little giggle
"What do mean? I sound like you" I said in mock confusion.
"When you speak you sound different and you talk different too"
"That's because I just moved here from England" she look thoughtful for a moment.
"Where's that? Is that the same place as New England?"
"No, where I come from is like the old England and is long, long way away across the ocean"
"Wow, that's so cool!"
"You think so? The weather there is very bad and the people are very strange" I did some funny faces as I spoke about the weather and people which made her giggle and laugh. We continued to talk about all sorts of things from her pets too her favourite cartoons until there was a knock at the door.
"MUMMY!" she jump off the chair and ran to the lady in the doorway.
"Sophie I'm so sorry, I was so worried" she clutched her tightly as she pick her up and hugged her.
"Jayson found me, he's from ingalend" she pointed to me as I waved shyly and smiled as I stood.
"Thank you so much" she quickly crossed the small gap between us, with Sophie on her hip she gave me tight hug making me blush a little. "Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!"
"You're very welcome!"I said as I looked to the doorway to see Kristopher's father standing there in a police uniform with a sheriff badge, Oh crap!
"Good to see you save and sound Sophie, just remember to stay with mummy next time ok" he said as he stepped next to her mother and smiled as she nodded quickly, "And thank you Jayson if there were a few more people like you my job would be a lot easier" he gave me warm smile which threw me completely considering what happen yesterday.
"I'm just happy to help and anyway I just love kids" I gave Sophie a big smile which was replied with a giggle.
Sophie's mother repeatedly hugged and thanked me as we made our way out of the shop and talked, with Kristopher's father in tow. He spoke with Sophie and her mother just before they had to leave but after both of them gave me a kiss on the cheek and making me blush profusely. I waved good bye to them as they left and then turned to see Kristopher's father looking at me.
"May I just apologise for the way I spoke to you yesterday, I know I was out of turn but it had all been too much for one day" He looked a little shocked.
"Don't worry, I can completely understand and not to mention the lesson you had with Kristopher. You really must know your stuff because even I have trouble against him" it was my turn to look a little shocked.
"I know what you mean he's got mean right kick" I said as rubbed the sore area on my ribs.
"So would you like a lift home as I finished about 10 minute ago" I excepted as it had been a rather tiring day and it was near on 3, we walked out of the mall, not sure why it's called that. We headed towards the car park, his car was easy to find as it stood out a bit not to mention the lights in the roof.
"Would you like to sit in the back or the front?"
"I don't mind as long I don't have to where any hand cuffs" we both started to laugh as he motioned to the front seat. We talked lightly about ourselves during the ride.
"You're not what I expected, from what Kristopher has told me about you"
"What do you mean? What did you expect?"
"Well from what Kristopher has said, I expected someone well ...."
"Like Kristopher?"
"Well Yeah, sorry"
"Don't worry about it, I can be quite stubborn and I was in a bit of stress yesterday because of all the stuff that's been going on but I do try to be level headed and nice."
"Yeah I noticed not many people would help someone like you did in fear of getting into trouble or people thinking the wrong thing."
"Yeah I'm just a big softy at the end of the day but I'm sure Kristopher is just as nice."
"Yeah he has his moments, he acts tough but he is just a little pup at heart."
"Why did you call him a 'pup'? We are still talking about your son, Kristopher yes?"
"WOW! You really don't know do you!" he gave me a concerned look as we turned to go down my street.
"What do you mean? What don't I know?" there it was a again that feeling that other people know something about me that I don't, first mum and dad now Kristopher's father.
"Never mind, don't worry about it! So which one is yours then?" I noticed him change the subject quickly but I was still trying to work out what was going on while I pointed to my home just 2 doors up from where we were. "It's been nice talking with you, but I really must get back to the station and get home" He seemed worried about something.
"Well thank you very much for the lift and I'll see you around" I could see my mum looking out the window at us "and now I'm about to get the third degree" I said as monition to my mother, he started to laugh.
"Sorry about that" I gave him a smile and a laugh as I got out and collected my bag from the back, "Oh and its Luke Jacobson by the way" he leaned across the passenger's seat and put his hand out the window.
"Jayson Thompson" I respond as I shook his hand, we both said good bye and headed off to our chosen destinations, mine being question central.
I walked up to home thinking about the way that he changed the subject so quickly as if he was worried or hiding something and the way he acted when I asked what he was on about yesterday and today was just confusing, maybe he knows more than he's letting on?
I opened the door and quickly through my hands in the air as mum came roaring around the corner "I didn't do anything wrong! He just gave me a lift home that's all!" she stopped in her tracts.
"Well that's relief! Why did he give you a lift home anyway?"
"I found and looked after a little girl that had lost her mother at the mall, he was with her mother when she picked her up as she had called the police and I got the manager of one of the shops to contact the security and he's Kristopher's dad" that last piece of information didn't seem to go down well by the looks of mums face.
I walked past her before she could ask any more questions and put my bag in my room and started to sort out my new clothes and items for school, putting them in the correct places not that they would stay there for long. All the while trying to work out what is going on with everybody and why was that Doberman thing watching me, a shiver ran down my spine thinking about it, those eyes are something else. I picked up the new clothes and took them to the laundry room and headed for the kitchen.
"We need to tell him Marry! We can't keep him in the dark about himself forever, he's going to find out one way or another especially that there seems to be some of them around here, and they can help him!"
"I know, but I'm just scared what he might think of us, I love him so much! I just don't want to lose him Mark"
"I know but we have to tell him, it's what they would have wanted"
"Mum, dad what's going on?" I had heard there conversation and walked into the kitchen, where they were both holding each other but they look shocked and even scared to see me.
Mum looked at dad and nodded slowly, "Jayson can you come and sit down we need to talk to you" they both looked pale and I didn't like it. I slowly took a seat across from them at the table. I just sat there watching and waiting for what might happen next.
"Jayson we know what you can do" my eyes went wide at my father's words, "its ok we aren't mad or upset, we still love you and always will! Because we have known what you are and what you are able to do even before you did" he gave mum a sad and worried look. Mum looked like she was about to burst in to tears.
"What I am about tell you is going to upset you but please remember that we both love you so much and we are so proud and blessed to have you in our lives, but we" he let out a ragged and sole wrenching sigh as one or two tears rolled down his cheek.
