You Can Find Everything at Market North
A story sketch exploring how scent would make some aspects of society different. In a world where scent is part of everyday life, we would have much less to talk about. I imagine so many things would just happen without need to discuss anything. Public spaces would be much quieter.

Thirty vendors in one building, mostly local food establishments, but some alcohol and retail outlets as well. The building was so old it predated the incorporation of the city. The Market North deserved to be preserved for local businesses and for people to gather. Tith was in line to buy a blood-seltzer from one of the inner-corner shops. Always a long line. Several mammals and reptiles stopped to sniff his slit while he waited. He caught some scents from the people waiting for living organs from vendor across the aisle. Live organs were so rare unless one went out and hunted for oneself, but that was uncommon these days. Tith flicked his tongue out, touching sheaths, slits, and vulvae on various people who walked by. He'd caught these scents before--some of their scent glands weren't even there, but the people were interesting, especially for Tith. Serpents had it rough in this world, no arms, no legs, needing the special cups to participate in society. He'd been taught how to use his tail tip like a hand, but it wasn't as articulate as a mammal's, or a lizard's, or anyone who had hands and feet. A wolf stopped suddenly and bent to sniff Tith's slit. The crowd filling the old building moved around him as his tail wagged. The black snake kept his hood down while the wolf took in his scent. The canine slipped out of his sheath. Tith flicked his tongue over the tip. Very enticing, and the wolf's arm was thicker than Tith's whole body. The wolf was searching for a quick fuck. He could smell Tith was interested, so he slipped into line, picking up the snake. Tith coiled around his hand and bumped noses with the wolf as the canine lowered Tith over his emerging cock. It slipped into Tith easily. An otter, an alligator, a family of skinks, and a pair of serpents paused to sniff or flick tongues over the action in line, and then they moved on to buy locally-made pastries or wine or whatever they fancied. The line moved while the wolf pushed into Tith. From the scent on his breath, the wolf liked filling slits--he was usually into pussy, but a reptile slit seemed to work for him, too. Tith's own scent implied how much he liked mammals. He came here a lot to mingle with the non-reptiles, partially because it was warm with all this fur around, and also to wait for someone to catch his scent. The wolf carried Tith down the line and stopped at the register. Tith found it difficult to order while the wolf's knot inflated inside of him, but it wasn't his first time ordering under pressure. The cashier, a tegu, flicked her tongue at the wolf's cock sliding in and out of the snake's slit. The wolf obliged her a couple thrusts while she took in the scent. Having placed an order for blood-seltzer, the wolf carried Tith to the side and tied him. Tith coiled around the wolf's neck and waited on his shoulders, happily hiding the wolf's cock as the crowd moved around them, but Tith's cock had come out and now throbbed for all to see. Tith wondered how long the wolf would tie him. He flicked his tongue over the wolf's nose. The canine breathed over Tith. He now knew the wolf had fairly quick ties, so this wouldn't be too involved. The serpent's drink was ready. The wolf picked it up for Tith and held it up for him. The snake sipped from the straw as the wolf took him on a stroll around the market, watched the felines ordering herbs from the special vendor. Two felines were fucking by the fire extinguisher. The wolf walked to them, and he and Tith took in their scents--both eager for relief and happy to connect with someone. A few minutes later, the wolf's knot shrank, and Tith slid off his cock. Tith licked up the rest of the dribble as it slid back into his sheath. The wolf held Tith up and suckled on his cock until he retracted into his slit. They scented one another one last time, and then Tith slithered around the wolf's body and back onto the floor, taking his cup from the canine and carrying it in his tail as he slid up the stairs to the dining area.
Tith coiled up on a stool and set the cup on the long table that ran along the top level, looking down at the Market North shops and the people between them. He considered stopping for a live organ next, at the risk of going into torpor in a public place. Several people stopped to sniff his exposed slit as they passed. He returned the gesture by flicking his tongue over their ass as they turned to leave. Everyone left these parts exposed in public places so others could know them if desired. No one else interested in a serpent in heat. Tith finished the soda--it was mole blood this week, which was the whole reason he came today--grabbed the cup and carried it to the recycle bin. Cups like these would be cleaned and reused for another species that had no articulate fingers. He slithered down the stairs and in the direction of the organ vendor. He wanted to try a beating heart. Slithering past the pastry shop, his tongue caught an enticing odor. Feline. Thin. Eager. Interested in reptiles. At the sight of Tith, the feline turned around and sniffed his slit. Gave it a few licks. He then lowered to all fours. Tith climbed on top of him, coiling around his torso and squeezing, and then slipped under his tail. He wasn't in any line, but the feline did crawl closer to the wall so they wouldn't block others. Tith spread his hood and flashed his fangs. The feline looked back at him and bumped noses with Tith. The snake was thicker than the feline's torso, and he clearly liked the sight of fangs dripping with venom. To Tith's surprise, the feline licked one of his fangs, just enough to get a taste of the lethal chemical his body made. Meanwhile Tith was pumping him full of fluid, squeezing him tighter. Several reptiles and mammals stopped to sniff them, and they moved on, the only other sounds were claws on the concrete and dinging of cash registers. When Tith finished, he pulled out but did not uncoil. Instead he wrapped himself around the feline's cock, enticing barbs brushing his scales. He squeezed rhythmically, and the feline responded. Tith flashed his fangs at the feline while he slid his lower body over him. He hadn't felt feline barbs in him in a long time. This cat's were harsh, and he didn't want to feel them moving inside himself. Just being inside was enough. The feline's breath told him he like being wrapped up and unable to move, so the serpent obliged, wrapping his body around the cat's torso tighter and tighter. Eventually the serpent spilled his warmth, and Tith gladly accepted, letting the cat lick his fangs a few more times. When the cat began to soften, Tith relaxed his grip. The feline rose to his legs. Tith made him work to get himself free. Finally he had unwrapped Tith and set him on the ground, exchanging tongue flicks and sniffs. The feline went to the alcohol vendor. Tith noticed there was no line for the organ dealer.
He lay in a coil at the register, rising up to eye level in front of the cashier, flicking his tongue. The cashier, a mouse about half the size of the feline he had just fucked, scented the breath coming off of Tith. Then he entered a few things into the system. The order was correct. Something else was correct as well. Tith smelled it. So did the mouse. To be sure, Tith slithered over the counter and around the torso of this mouse. The mouse smelled so nice he had to get more of it. He slid his tongue down the mouse's throat. The mouse was fingering the serpent's slit and then raising his fingers to his nose. He knew, too. More than lust. More than a need for relief. A sense they could get along and would compliment one another, and since they both sensed it at the same time, it meant everything. The mouse filled Tith's order, but the snake would not eat it yet. Tith remained coiled around him as the mouse took other customers, who scented them and gestured congratulations on their newfound bond. Tith was already making plans to move in with this mouse. They had many happy years to look forward to.
