Ten minutes later and we were all sat in the lounge. Our guest was standing at the windows, looking down at LA below. Apart from our first encounter, he behaved himself since he'd arrived. He stood proud, mature and almost as polite as a proper guest would behave. I was sat as far from him as possible. I sat Indian-fashion on the couch, back pressed to the back of the couch. I'd decided that a pair of denim jeans and a dark blue tank top would do for a meeting like this. Snow was sat beside me, one knee drawn up, his muscular form hunched as he gazed at the other feline. I wondered what he was thinking? He'd donned a fresh pair of denim three-quarter-lengths and the shirt he'd worn earlier, it was unbuttoned, so that his muscular chest was more of a distraction than anything else. Snow's other arm slid across the back of the couch and spilled over my shoulder. I raised a hand and our fingers laced as we watched our guest pad across the hardwood floor, a hand trailed across the smooth windows as he remained silent in his own musings. Kane was standing with his back to the wall opposite the windows. He was crouched down with the sheathed katana leaning against his shoulder. He looked badass, but I knew deep down he was still suffering from a hurt pride more than anything else.
Donovan was sat, legs over the back of the couch as he leaned upon it. He was closest to Sawyer, and damn brave too considering what the blue feline could do. I was still dazed by what he'd demonstrated earlier, but if he could make a beast bleed without touching him, then he was more dangerous than we'd anticipated. Donovan had said there had been rumours that the council's age had factored into such abilities, but perhaps Sawyer was unique. The feline smiled pleasant as he peered down over the beautiful summer day that was bathing LA in a warm torrent of sunshine.
Donovan broke the silence. "Sawyer, are you aware of the events that have been happening here in the US?" he asked.
"Events? What events do you speak of?" Sawyer asked, looking at the wolf now.
"The senseless massacres. There have been eight as of this morning," Donovan replied, there was a tension in his shoulders now. Was Sawyer feigning ignorance?
"You mean the mindless ones? The ones said to be attacking out of pure madness?"
Donovan nodded.
"The council has heard stories that the precious Walker's Law is under investigation. These massacres do not bode well for your rights and legalities it would seem," he added. "Are you nervous?"
"I'm worried things will change, and the wereanimals worldwide will be driven back into hiding, if that's what you mean by nervous?" Donovan replied.
"Indeed." Sawyer paced the windows again and then asked, "So what is it you want us to do?"
"What do you mean? The council must see a need to stop the Law from being abolished?" Donovan demanded, his hands squeezed the couch where he perched.
"How so? Because modern man will revoke your precious legalities?"
"Without that Law and the regulations that follow, we'll be hunted down, Sawyer!"
"Consider it a testament," Sawyer said.
"A testament?" I repeated looking confused.
"Yes, a simple testament: the strongest will live on, and the weak shall become nothing more than blood stains on the ground." He looked cold as he spoke.
"You'd let the humans mow us down when the Law collapses?" Donovan demanded, he stood up now.
"True power will defend those who know how to wield it."
"Your fucking insane!" Kane snarled from across the lounge, he stood in a liquid movement, hand touching his sword, he stopped dead when he touched the cold steel.
Sawyer smirked up at the wolf and said, "You remember what happened. Good boy."
"Go fuck yourself," Kane sneered back.
"Such impoliteness," Sawyer smirked back. "Have your pack members always been so rude?" he asked, looking at Donovan now.
Donovan smiled. "Kane is his own person, and besides, you fucked with him first. He's this pack's Guardian and you stepped on his tail big time upstairs."
Sawyer considered Donovan, and then let his attention swim elsewhere. He looked at me and Snow. "Do explain."
"Explain what?" I asked.
"Explain how this," he gestured at me and Snow, "is possible?"
"You mean our bond?" I replied. Sawyer nodded. "We found Snow as one of the mindless ones. But when I touched him, our beasts seemed to gel together and our bond awakened. When we finalised the bond and we sure I was indeed a Lupine, we tested the waters again and I bound myself to Donovan. So far both bonds are going strong." I smiled as I spoke. How could I not smile? I was bound to two awesome lovers and amazing beasts. Both were caring and loved me in their own ways.
"Just some form of bestial reaction then?" Sawyer suggested.
"What do you mean?"
"I mean, it sounds like your beast reacted to his beast and created this phenomenon. A rather odd but powerful phenomenon at that."
I nodded, "Something like that."
"Do you believe you could bind yourself to another alpha like you did them?" he asked.
"Like another male?"
"If it was needed, yes, would you bind yourself to another alpha male?"
"I don't know if I could handle another male in my life. Not romantically like these two anyway. Its day two since we are all bound, and I am certain another emotional bond would ruin things."
Sawyer smirked, a cruel play of feline lips. "I did not request a romantic entanglement. I asked if you could bind yourself to another alpha. Simple question. Simple answer please?"
I frowned at his rudeness and tensed, "Are you asking me to bind myself to someone for power purposes only?"
"Answer the question, if you would, Mr. Black?" he sounded impatient now.
I looked startled but replied, "I don't know."
Sawyer considered me for another moment and then looked at Snow. "Your feline friend is an odd one. I sense no loyalties in you besides this pack. Do you not have a clan of your own?"
"Clan?" Snow repeated.
"I believe that is the modern term for a weretiger commune. Do you not have your own clan to call home?"
"Not that I'm aware of."
Sawyer looked a question at Donovan. "When Snow was found he was feral, Eben brought him around, but he suffers from amnesia for the time being."
"Do you believe he will regain his memories in time?" Sawyer asked.
Donovan shrugged, a graceful lift and fall of his shoulders. "I have no idea. Depends on the person in question."
Sawyer looked back at me then and asked, "Have you not considered that you may have done this to him?"
"Me?"
"Your touch awakened him, did it not? As did his body contact awaken your Lupine beast. Perhaps you snatched those memories from him during the initial encounter?"
I considered what he'd said and had to admit, it sounded plausible. "You mean I could bring back Snow's memories?"
"No. I mean you may have stolen them from him. Simple."
"Your bedside manner is terrible," Snow said from beside me, a smile curved his lips.
Sawyer stopped smirking and said, "I am not here as a nurse. I am here as a council member."
"As a council member?" Kane stated in disbelief.
Sawyer looked up at the wolf and asked, "Something wrong?"
"Nothing at all, its just your a council member who won't help us when we need him!" Kane growled.
Sawyer grinned at Kane again and said, "I would be cautious if I were you, wolf. Your tongue and mannerisms get the better of you."
Kane grinned back and said, "And your role as a council member is downright poor if I'm honest."
"Touché, but it is modern misconception that we as a council are here to help when it is needed. We are not here at the beast's beck and call. We are more like Judgement for the bestial breed."
"Judgement?" I repeated looking confused.
"It means that if we believe what your doing is harmful toward us and our kind, then we will deal with you."
"And these massacres don't qualify as being harmful toward you and your kind?" I demanded.
Sawyer smirked, "The council are traditionalists, we have lived life running and hiding. These new Laws were weak to begin with. Having them fall and blunder will not harm our breed, it will strengthen it."
Kane frowned and said, "Survival of the fittest then?"
"Now you grasp what we're getting at. Now, I have listened and judged your queeries, Donovan Reed. Please understand what is happening is what is best for our kind." Sawyer smirked and turned to leave.
"So that's it!" Kane growled.
"Thats it."
"I had heard rumours the council were some of the oldest and wisest of our kind. I can sense your age, your fucking ancient, but as for wise. Nah! I feel like I'm speaking to a brick wall!" he sneered.
"You would do well to keep your opinions locked away in your small mind, Takeshi Kane."
"And you'd do well to never come across me again. Last time was a fluke, next time I'll make sure I draw at least one drop of blood."
"Just one drop? Not my whole head then? You aren't very ambitious are you?"
"You could call it that. I call it being realistic. Your old and crazy powerful, I'd lose in a second, but at my best performance I could scratch you a little."
Sawyer glared over his shoulder at the wolf. There was a gentle breeze that enveloped the room, and then suddenly a haze surrounded Sawyer, a gentle mist that obscurred him from sight. Snow shielded me as Donovan stepped back from the gathering smog. Kane unsheathed his katana one-handed and leaped over the back of the couch, touching a hand to Donovan's chest and stepping forward. The mist dispersed after a second or two and when it vanished, so had Sawyer. That was the first time I'd encountered anyone from the council. I had to say, as impressed as I was, I still felt frightened about them. Sawyer had shown more interest in me and Snow. He was meant to help us, but ended up investigating his own musings, and then insulting Kane.
Kane cursed under his breath as he slammed the katana home inside its scabbard. He glared out the window, hands clenched, shaking from head to toe. He murmured something about needing a shower and left without a word. I watched him stalk off and then turned on Donovan. Now we had a real problem? What did we do now? We had a full moon to deal with tonight and now it seemed our allies were under house arrest and our last plea for help had been all but laughed at. Hell, I reckon Sawyer even had a giggle at our request.
"Now what do we do?" I asked.
Donovan took a deep breath and held his hand out to me. I went to him without a word, he embraced me and held me close, his hand stroked through my head fur as he looked at Snow.
"What do you propose we do?" he asked, looking at Snow.
"Nothing until the house arrest lifts from Maximillian and the others. Right now lets focus on getting through tonight's full moon and then we'll deal with whatever happens tomorrow night."
"Sounds like a plan to me." Donovan squeezed me once and held me there while he gazed across. His pale green eyes met Snow's blue ones. There was so much fear in that room. Anxious and tired, we all would wait and see what happened come day break. Hopefully something would be done. And hopefully it would be done soon.
