"You're a fool!" The black and white rabbit said. "We have enough food already!" Two rabbits were busy arguing within the cellar of their home as the white rabbit rolled his eyes at his lover. "Oh please, you know he keeps the best vegetables for himself, why shouldn't we have some for ourselves." The look that the black and white rabbit gave the other, made the white rabbit take a few steps back, then the paw came up as a digit jabbed forwards and stabbed the chest of the rabbit.
"Joseph, you know very well that that fox would kill you if you even tried to steal more of his vegetables this year, he's still pretty fucked off with you the last time around." Joseph took another step backwards, but Jan wasn't letting him get away and stepped forwards again as she continued to berate him. "And of all things, it had to be the prize-winning cabbage as well!" Eventually Joseph couldn't go back anymore as he felt the wall press up against his small tuft of a tail, then his back pressed up against the wallpaper as Jan just came right up to his face as the two set of whiskers brushed over each other. The two looked into each other eyes and eventually Jan just snorted and turned away. "Oh, what's the use, you're going to do it whether or not I withdraw sex, so do me one solid favour here, okay?" The female black and white rabbit said as she turned around to look at the white rabbit. "Don't get caught."
Joseph walked over and wrapped his arms about her slim torso and then gently pressed his nose up against hers, then he kissed her on the lips as the male rabbit spoke softly after the kiss. "I'll be careful, like I want to never see you again." His soft gaze made the female smile and then they both embraced each other into a tight hug as their heads rested against each other, the side of their heads pressed together as Jan spoke softly. "I love you." Joseph replied to her with the same words. "I love you." Then the male rabbit pulled away and walked off as he picked up his small backpack and slung it over his shoulder, then with another glance behind him, the male rabbit grasped at the door handle and then with a twist, the door opened and he was gone, the door closing back shut again. Jan stood there as she felt the icy freezing wind from the outside rush past her and her paw moved to where her belly was and she tenderly rubbed it, whispering. "Please return back to me."
Outside in the cold, the wind blew hard as Joseph felt his ears being battered, the sensation of feeling within the ears went very quickly as the blood flow came to a very slow crawl, what was seen before with the blue veins, nearly became invisible, then the ears flapped about all over the place as the male rabbit shivered and slowly he began to walk across the fresh layer of snow, thankful that his large foot paws were naturally shaped to spread the weight across the ground so that he wouldn't sink into the cold sludge. All around the area was covered in snow, which made Joseph feel more on edge as the hairs on the back of his neck rose, not only for keeping warm but he was on edge. Whenever Joseph tried to smell any scents the harsh frigid wind and snow was blanketing everything away and as such, he was unable to detect if any danger was nearby.
And yet, still the male rabbit continued to walk forwards as the harsh cold winds of the North blew against his face as he turned North now and with a raise of his paw, the rabbit shielded his eyes as he looked at the dark storm clouds ahead. Joseph came to a stop and knelt as he lowered his right shoulder and allowed the right strap of the backpack to slip, the male rabbit carefully removed the pack from his back and swung it around until it made a soft bump in the snow in front of him. Still warm with the fur, the fingers grasped at the straps and pulled them free, the top hitting him in the chest from the wind blowing at him and he reached into the compartment, the rabbit pulled out a scarf as he wrapped it about his neck, the wool knitted fabric felt nice against his fur. Joseph reached in once more and pulled out a hat, also knitted and quickly put it onto his head as the fabric pushed down his ears to the back of his head, then slowly he brought out a pair of gloves and placed them onto his hand paws.
Once he had closed the backpack, he stood back up again and slung it about his back once more, before he slipped his free arm through the harness and secured it as the straps were tightened, then the rabbit began to walk forwards again as the first white specks of snow started to fall. The thought that he should turn back kept knocking at the back of his mind, but Joseph just wanted to get that next prize, to up that fox, he just enjoyed making a fool of him. Slowly, he slowed down as the snow falling became thicker and heavier, but the rabbit knew that he was approaching territory that was dangerous to tread. Joseph, you see had in fact entered the vulpine owned grounds. And so, Joseph knelt and started to creep about as he slowly made his way further into hostile lands. Even with the extra clothing he had put on, the wind and snow were still chilling to the bone, even with his coat of fur. The visibility was getting worse as Joseph could only make out dark shadows and that was at close range. Eventually he came to a stop near a tree and leant against it, Joseph lifted his hand paw to brush away the snow from his brow and then slowly he watched the mist of air that came out from his nose. He lifted the scarf and covered his mouth and nose, then he got up and pushed on as he made his way towards a large dark form that was ahead of him, the barn.
The closer the rabbit got to the barn, the gladder that he was as the entire structure helped to shield him from the northernly cold winds that kept battering his face, the ice that formed on his hairs, the eyelashes as the male rabbit felt the stinging pain. But the male pushed on, there was the prize of winning over his nemesis and the rabbit enjoyed the risk of just getting over the male fox, over many times and that was the thrill for the bunny. When he finally pressed his body against the wood wall, the rabbit was relieved. Joseph reached up and tugged on the scarf as he freed his mouth and exhaled as the mist of air hung in the air before it vanished. Safe from the win, the bunny moved quickly towards the door as he looked about and sniffed the area, he paused now any again as he looked about and then his paw reached for the doorknob and he touched it. There was a bright flash, sharp pain and as Joseph flew into the air, his vision blurred and then he passed out before his body landed into the snow a few metres away.
How long Joseph was unconscious was unknown to the rabbit but the first thing he felt was the icy freezing water being splashed over his face as it got into his nose, eyes and stung. The skin under the fur complained to the pain as each hair matted, it made the bunny shiver and then he was wide awake, coughing his guts up as water spat out of his mouth. With his vision still blurred, the bunny tired to blink a few times as the shadows danced about, slowly the images started to come back together again and then the vision got brighter, sharper and Joseph saw the male fox standing there with a bucket in his black hand paw. "Wakey-wakey, rise and shine cottontail." Joseph felt his heart sank, only briefly as he tried to move quickly but found that his ankles had been tied together and so, the rabbit fell to the hay covered floor with a loud thud, which only made his headache throb more painfully in his skull.
The sound of the bucket being placed down onto the floor made Joseph skull throb painfully as he gasped loudly to the pain, the ears just rang as the male fox knelt and those long black fingers gripped the lower jaw of the rabbit and turned the head to face him. "My, we are clumsy tonight, you really need to get up on the game." The fox slowly helped the rabbit to sit back up again as he knelt there and grinned with his teeth. "But I suppose, now that I finally won that game, we made a blood pact to all those years ago, you do remember it, don't you?" Joseph sighed and nodded his head as he looked at the vulpine. "Yeah, you're right, would've kept winning if I didn't get cocky." The rabbit paused before he added. "You win Tod, so you going to untie my ankles, I won't run." Tod looked at the tied ankles and shook his head as he walked away. "No, think you can do that by yourself." The fox made for the small bar in the barn and then picked up a bottle, bit into the cork and pulled it so that the air escaped with a pop and then poured the dark red liquid into the two glasses. "She be looked after, without knowing of course."
Slowly as his head allowed, the rabbit reached for the rope that was tied about his ankles and slowly he worked at the knot with his claws. After getting a good grip, the knot slowly worked itself loose as the rabbit untied the restraints, pulled on the rope, and then tossed it to the side as he slowly moved onto all fours and then started to kneel as he felt his head spin. Joseph took a deep breath as he recovered and then pushed himself up to stand as he wobbled slightly. Step by step, the rabbit walked over to where the fox was and he grasped at the edge of the bar to steady himself, this was when Tod pushed the glass over and then nodded his head. "I have to say, you're lucky I managed to not eat today, so famished and I do want to get started, but first I have to ask something." The fox leant on the bar and looked at the rabbit, then at the barn door and then back to the rabbit again. "I know what you're thinking, play for time. Let's see if I can trick the fox again, prolong the game. Well, if you want to do that, you can try." Tod took a sip of the red wine after he finished talking as Joseph looked to where the barn door was and then back to the fox with the rim of the glass that touched the muzzle lips.
Slowly, Joseph picked up the glass as the rabbit took a sniff of the wine and he sighed to the scent of it that wafted up. It was Tod's special blend, five years ago when the grapes were the sweetest that harvest. With a tip of the glass, the rabbit took a mouthful of the red liquid and the left it to hang in the mouth, savouring the sweet nectar, the warmth that swelled up within his cheeks. Then he swallowed and drank the entire glass, the warmth was a welcome right now, not alone was the soothing effects of the alcohol. Tod smiled as he placed his glass down and poured another filled glass for the rabbit. "So, you really did take for my plants, eh? Ever wondered how I managed to get to win so many competitions, especially against other rabbit contenders?"
With glass in hand, Joseph gave a thoughtful look as he tried to think of a correct answer, and he took another drink of the wine and shook his head. "Nope, can't think of a thing and that is what drives me to ruin you or at least that was the game. The other rabbits are going to be sorry I failed this time around. And so, since I lost, why don't you tell me?" The rabbit drank all the wine again and placed the glass back down on the bar as he looked at the fox who just smiled and pushed his glass towards the rabbit. "Maybe after drinking this entire bottle, least I can do for all the times you tricked me." And with that Tod sat down on the stool and watched as Joseph did the same and continued to drink as the two males remained quiet for some time. The red liquid in the bottle slowly dipped lower and lower as the rabbit drank glass after glass and the fox, well he kept on watching with a smile on his face. Eventually the bottle was emptied and drank as Joseph looked relaxed and drunk. "Y-you were going to tell me about the stuffs."
Tod smiled and got up from his stool and offered a hand paw. "And so, I did, it's this way to the back of the barn and where the green house is, you know, the place that you were going to rob after all." The rabbit smiled and slipped off the bar stool as he wobbled a bit more, but Joseph reached out and clasped his fingers with the vulpine paw and with help from Tod, the bunny stabilised himself. And so, the fox led the rabbit with him across the barn as they headed towards another door on the opposite side of the one that they had entered previously. When Tod opened the door, there was a staircase that led down, the fox smiled as he slowly turned on the lights which were on the ceiling. "Had to hide this from you, all you managed to find was the fake greenhouse that is outside."
Joseph kept a tight grip on the handrail as they headed downwards. "I-is this where your secret is?" The rabbit looked down the stairs and then stopped as he saw the steps sway back and forth, then one of his legs gave way but the strong arm of the fox beside him stopped the rabbit from falling down the steps. "That's right, you will find out soon enough." Eventually the two got down the entire stairs as the fox moved the bunny to the side and helped the male to rest against the side of the wall, then he turned and opened a small box on the opposite wall and pressed a few buttons that beeped, the combination was tapped in and then the door opened in front of them as Joseph turned his head to look at the room inside which lit up automatically and he could smell so many fresh vegetables and the heat in the room and then the sensation of the mist. For a moment, his mouth became wet with saliva and the rabbit swallowed it back down his throat as the fox helped him leave the wall as both entered the underground greenhouse.
Slowly they ventured into the large dug out room and the rabbit looked about and up as he saw the daylight bulbs shine down and he was clearly impressed, Joseph looked at the fox with admiration and spoke, his words slurred now. "I'm impressed. So, this is how you did it all?" Tod came to a stop near to some bushes and he turned the rabbit to face them as he nodded. "Yeah, this is how I did it but there's someone else that's been helping me down here, they so want to say hello. Wait here a moment." The fox took a few steps back and then with a thumb and finger, he whistled as the rabbit turned to look at the fox and then back to where the bushes were. Tod though grinned with his sharp teeth bared and then took a step forward, closer, and closer he got and then...
Tod turned around completely and then looked directly at the reader. "Hey, I know what you are thinking. Rabbit comes down to the cellar out of sight in a big winter storm and ends up being attacked and eaten by these marvellous teeth." Tod shone his teeth as his tongue slid over each tooth. "Amazing rodent dentist, knows how to get about without causing pain while prodding about inside there but I'm getting side-tracked here." Tod moved to the side and then looked to where Joseph was still stood, looking at the leaves as they rustle. "Let's just see what is about to happen, hmm?" Tod said as he looked briefly at the reader once more. The leaves parted way as a huge plant came into view, large vines as the huge skin petals just swayed about. "You see, found this seed one day, landed smack bang in the middle of an SUV of all things, totally destroyed it." Tod grinned as the whole area changed to where Tod pointed to a burning wreck of a vehicle. "Massive seed and well, I thought to myself... Fuck, just love a sweet ride that I have to admit got me many good encounters in the usual spot." Tod smiled and winked towards the reader. "Come on, you all know what that's about, what people do in high school and college. Anyways, I took this seed, planted it and then well, the plant came, and it really did help me win so many competitions."
The scene returned to where the huge plant was stood right in front of the rabbit, the petals were opening as the huge eyeball slid out and started to look at the bunny straight in the eyes. "Now, remember boys and girls, please do not look directly into the eye or you may end up losing your mind." The fox said as he waved his paw to show off the scene that was being played in front of him. "And alas, I do think it's time for me to get back to this story and for you, the reader and please wipe yourself clean if you're going to do the naughty or as for us foxes, a few towels at least. No one likes a mess..." Tod turned away from looking at you, the reader as he turned back towards the scene and slowly walked up to where Joseph was, his hand came to rest on one of the shoulders.
"So, yeah this is my friend and secret of winning all those competitions in the past." Tod looked up to where the plant was and then back at the slowly hypnotised rabbit. "You see, you're not the only rabbit that has taken the blood oath. But you were the one that lasted the longest, but you all end up down here in the end." Joseph just kept staring at the plant as the fox continued to talk. "The reason why my vegetables and fruit grow so well is that they are fed by the likes of you, the vegetation eaters, your diet really does help these plants grow and they really appreciate it, and I might add, you do owe them since you do eat them so I just help to turn the tables now and again." Tod gave Joseph a pat on the shoulder as the fox saw one of the plant tentacles move. "It was nice knowing you Joseph, but all friendships have to come to an end." And with that, Tod slowly left the rabbit alone as he continued to stand there, his eyes fixed onto the large eyeball in the middle of the open flower.
Slowly, those tentacles wrapped around the body of the rabbit, the eye came right up to the face of Joseph as it continued to look into the two eyes as the bunny started to drool as a thick gooey line of saliva dribbled down his chin as it fell onto one of the coils that was wrapped about him, then slowly the rabbit was gently pulled forwards. Mesmerised, Joseph stepped forwards as the eye slowly retracted away from him as the bunny stepped towards the plant itself, the petals moved downwards as they opened wider, the lower ones rested on the soil ground as the vines kept a firm grip about the warm mammal body. As soon as the first foot stepped onto the petal, the vines started to release as thinner vines moved from around the eye and started to wrap about the body of the rabbit. Tod continued to stand there as he watched, the thinner vines started to leak thick gooey substance as the rabbit became covered in the stuff, then slowly the petals began to close as the fox smiled and watched as the plant moved back upwards again and the rabbit rested at the deepest part inside the plant as the lights from above closed off.
All that Joseph could feel was the tingling sensation of that gooey mixture slowly rising up along his body as the digestive juices continued to move about the inner walls of the plant, the vines slowly slipped away as the eye closed over and then sunk underneath the gooey mixture as the rabbit stood there, the mixture of the booze and being hypnotised kept him from feeling pain as the acid began to work on the male. With a final breath, the gooey mixture went past the mouth and nose, then the head submerged as the male rabbit slowly slipped and fell into the stomach of the plant. Tod walked up as he looked at the closed plant and smiled, his hand paw patted the plant gently. "Feed well, girl." The fox said as he turned around and walked back towards the door, he wondered just what marvellous vegetable would grow from this rabbit. With a final look, the fox went through the door and waved, then closed the door behind him.
Several years later, two young teenagers were sitting across each other at the table as the fox looked at the rabbit across from him. "Hey, what you say about foxes being cleverer than rabbits?" The fox gave a toothy grin as the rabbit frowned back. "No, they're not, we're cleverer than you lot." The rabbit took a bite from his sandwich, chewing slowly. The fox grinned more. "Want to make a bet on it, if I win you do whatever I want but if you keep on tricking me then you can continue to show off how clever you are forever." The fox picked up the small knife and cut his paw as he held the knife for the rabbit. "Want to make a blood oath, my father taught me this as a cub, you can't get out of it." For a moment, the rabbit looked at the blood and felt queasy but then he looked at the fox, that arrogant look that he was giving him and then the fox added. "Unless you do think foxes are way better than you?" The rabbit took the knife, cut his paw, and then clasped as he shook the fox hand. "You're on, I'm so going to enjoy this."
An older fox walked past with a tray in hand, with a burger and soda on the tray and Tod paused and looked at the reader with a wink. "Game must go on, careful now. Not all games are safe, but hey. It's like this chilli supernova roulette burger. Sometimes you don't get it, other times you might and probably have to spend the week in hospital." Tod sat down at an empty table and looked back to where his son was on the other side of the restaurant. "I've retired now of course, next generation and all." Slowly Tod unwrapped the burger and then picked it up as he held it in his hands. "Who will win, who knows, but hey, life and death game, is the riskiest and yet most rewarding game you could play. So do you feel lucky, well do you?" With a wide maw, the fox took a huge bite of the burger and chewed, a playful look in his eye that when you look closely, the shape of the plant could be seen just beyond the darkness.
