Preserving Those Inhabitants of the Dwindling Ice
A poem made for International Polar Bear Day last year but got delayed by a hectic week that made it hard to finish back then along with another poem but both did get done and written obviously. Originally posted and finished March 2021
Preserving Those Inhabitants of the Dwindling Ice
By: A.X. Bueno
On the arctic and subarctic ice lives those majestic creatures
The powerful polar bear with all their built for cold features
Their place as the arctics apex predator unquestionable and their existence essential
They're the kind of impressive animal that can make you get existential
Unfortunately for them and us they now face the problem of a rapidly dwindling home
Temperatures rise and the climate becomes increasingly erratic
It's possible soon they'll lack their familiar tundra biome
If the polar ice does continue to shrink and eventually disappear in the coming years
It's practically inevitable what would happen then I fear
The mighty polar bears would vanish as the ice faded away
We're already seeing glimpses of this tragic future
Faster than expected the experts say
Still there's hope even during a period of uncertainty and dismay
We've identified the problem and ways to prevent further progression of what's happening now
It's just a matter of figuring out how
How to reverse the growth of the terrible seeds of an unnaturally changing climate that shouldn't have been sowed
We can only hope we somehow do and the fierce polar bears manage to endure
That for the problem of the dwindling ice we find a solution in time, a cure
People are already trying, it's just a matter of continuing and doing our best to do more
To be sure that's there's a future for the sake of the polar bears and the world that is secure
