I couldn't sleep. I tossed and turned on that dusty bed for what felt like hours. Every time sleep's sweet embrace threatened to take me I awoke minutes later. The usually calming sound of Zenna's snoring was absent when I sat up in bed. She must have gone to check up on little Hera. With only one ear she sure had a keen sense of sound. I could hear Hera crying faintly in another building, and for a moment I thought to go check up on her as well. Although I decided against the notion since Zenna had become increasingly protective of her since she became ill. Still, I knew I wasn't going to get any sleep and I needed to clear my head. After grabbing a lantern I strapped on my foot, and put some clothes on. I looked around the room I had become so used to with a heavy sigh. An actual cabinet set and a beat up workbench sat against the walls. Zenna's pile of weapons laid beside the bed where they always did. It's strange how accustomed you can get to sleeping beside a pile of deadly weaponry. Especially when the wielder was the big spoon behind you most nights. Hopefully Zenna hadn't locked the front door when she left. Breathing in the cool night air felt good, but I could hear the distant crying of Hera. Hopefully Zenna would be able to calm her down, but the sound made a pit form in my stomach. Sometimes the weight of fatherhood doesn't sink in right away. Especially when your kid's first instinct is to maul you on sight for fun. Hera was the only one of my kids I was allowed to hold at birth. The first two, Khana and Sadi, were protected fiercely by their mother. Even getting close to them when they were still crawling would result in an injury from Zenna. Eventually I just gave up trying to interact with them at all. Gnolls grow up fast, and before I knew it both of them were on their feet running around. They didn't bother calling me dad. To them I was just Zenna's husband. Hera's birth had been a rough one for Zenna, and she had passed out upon delivery. The wetnurse allowed me to hold the baby for once, and I could barely believe it. There in my arms was a bundle of soft light brown fur. She hadn't even opened her eyes yet her hands grasped and explored her surroundings. I placed my finger in the palm of her soft squishy pads, and she took it in her grasp. As my heart melted in real time the moment was suddenly ruined by Hera chomping on the finger she held in her paws. I flinched and bit my tongue as she drew blood with her baby teeth. The wetnurse couldn't help but laugh at my rookie mistake.

Strolling through the village at night was nice, but the rumble of countless snoring gnolls filled the still savanna air. I needed to get away from this place for a bit, and clear my head. The vehicle storage area was really just a large barn full of vehicles. Trucks, ATVs, dirt bikes, and a couple dune buggies sat in various states of repair. Trying not to bump into anything in the dim lantern light was tough. Gnolls tended to just leave their tools where they were when it was break time, and in general were messy creatures. In the far corner of the barn I found a couple of dirt bikes lined up neatly for once. The lack of dirt or rust on the bikes let me know who exactly they belonged to. Sedreh preferred to ride alone when on patrol, and took it upon herself to care for the bikes she used. I didn't feel like pissing her off so I swung my lantern over towards the other corner, and found what I was looking for. A beat up dirtbike caked in dust and grime leaning against the wall, and an extra gas canister. The keys were in the ignition just like always. It's hard to believe they still left them like this after all this time, but I wasn't going to complain. I didn't feel like waking up the entire village so I quietly wheeled the dirtbike out of the barn and down the main path. Once I got to the front gates I noticed that whoever had locked them last did not actually lock the gate. They had simply hung the lock off of the chain, and called it a night. I reminded myself to complain to Zenna about the gate guards later. Discipline wasn't somethat that gnolls were accustomed to, and any attempts to instil a sense of it into them was useless. With the village out of even an anthro's earshot I threw one leg over the dirtbike and settled into the seat. I checked the bandages wrapped around my wrist, and tested my hand. Hopefully, it was healed up enough for this ride, and if not then I'd be eating dirt in a few moments.

This wasn't the first time I had snuck away in the middle of the night. In fact, I used to do this quite frequently in the past. And usually instead of trying to clear my head I was trying to escape this place. I turned the key and kicked the throttle into gear as the engine below me roared to life. The single headlight barely illuminated the dirt road in front of me, but the endless flat of the savanna made that a nonissue. The dirtbike whined as I began to pick up speed away from the gnoll village. Soon it was just another shadow of the landscape behind me, and nothing but the endless expanse laid before me.

Formless shapes and shadows whizzed past me as I followed the dirt road. I had followed this path a few times during my escape attempts over the years. There aren't many landmarks when the land is just flat plains as far as the eye can see, but after this long I knew the area decently enough. I slowed down when a familiar landmark came up on the side of the road. It was the remains of the ATV I crashed 5 years ago. The twisted heap of burnt metal was a familiar sight, but one that brought back painful memories. Memories of my wife. Then again, those always seemed to be one and the same. I revved the throttle of the dirtbike as I raced past it. The last thing I wanted to think about right now was Zenna. It felt like I drove for hours, but soon I arrived at my destination. The dirtbike cruised to a stop, and I flicked down the kickstand. The clear night sky helped illuminate the view in front of me. A massive canyon dividing the land in half that went on for miles on either side. Dozens of my tries at freedom were thwarted by the natural landscape. I couldn't help but let my thoughts drift back to one of my earlier escape attempts.

Zenna and her sisters had left to go to a meeting with the other gnolls tribes of this land. Zenna had left Gahenna in charge till they returned a week later. I had thought it would be a golden opportunity to escape. Unfortunately, Zenna had ordered her to leave me in the prison cell due to my penchant for trying to run away. Back then Zenna refused to let me out of her sight if she could help it. I didn't have my prosthetic leg yet so I hobbled around on a pair of crutches fashioned out of scrap. During that time she was liable to tear your head off if you so much as looked at me wrong whenever I struggled in getting around. She actually refused to let me walk a few times after witnessing my crutches break, and instead kept picking me up in a bridal carry. Thankfully, one of our supply runners snagged a pair of actual crutches at a nearby village. It took nearly an entire day of arguing to make her stop carrying me everywhere, but Zenna finally relented when I resorted to swinging the crutches at her whenever she tried to pick me up. I remember laying on that dirty straw mattress just trying to get some rest when I heard the cell door unlock. Gahenna stepped into my cell while holding my crutches, and threw them on the floor in front of me.

“Get up, flowerboy."

“Huh? I thought Zenna sai-"

“I don't give a fuck about what she said. Get up. You got work to do."

“Work? What are yo-"

A swift kick to the ribs shut me up. I quickly got the idea and followed Gahenna outside. The village was abuzz with activity from the male gnolls as usual. Scavengers returning from merchants, recyclers going through the junk the scavs brought, and the rest taking care of more daily chores. I was led to the vehicle storage barn, and forcibly sat down in front of a dust-caked motorbike. She handed me a rag and a bucket of water, and told the lone gnoll in the barn to watch me. When he asked what he should do if I tried anything Gahenna paused to think before sighing and telling him to just start yelling. Later, when I asked her why she even did this to me in the first place, Gahenna told me that she was sick of seeing me do nothing all day. Everyone in the gnoll tribe had duties, so why shouldn't the human have some too?

The small male gnoll accompanying me inside the barn was happy enough to get back to work as soon as Gahenna left. He'd occasionally steal glances my way nervously as if I'd try something. Then again, he had gotten quite the punishment for letting me escape the first time I ever tried. After Zenna found out he was inside the barn when I stole an ATV she made him run laps around the village with a backpack full of rocks. While I was doing my best to clean the dirty motorbike a truck rolled into the barn. Some of the remaining lesser females had returned from patrol. When they noticed me working on the motorcycle. Immediately I found myself sandwiched between half a dozen gnoll women all groping, grabbing, and touching whatever part of me they wanted to. Paws the size of my head all took turns trying to get a reaction out of me, and the obnoxious sound of cackling from the women was deafening. The sound was only broken by the sudden angry barking of Gahenna, who immediately ordered the girls outside to scream at them for touching Zenna's property. After regaining my composure I noticed that they had left the truck door wide open when they saw me. Gahenna would be screaming at them for a good while, and they always left the key in the ignition for some reason. When I turned towards the truck after grabbing my crutches I was met with the sight of the male gnoll standing between me and the truck's door. He shook his head at me as I hobbled towards him, and tried to push me away from the truck. I didn't have time for that so I raised one of my crutches up to strike him. Immediately he crouched down and covered his head while starting to shake. I didn't even know what to do. So I simply hobbled around him and climbed up into the truck. Right before I turned the key I looked back at the male gnoll to see him on his knees with his hands clasped together. His whines told me he really didn't want to get in trouble again, and I felt a bit bad for him. However, I wanted to escape much more. So I threw my crutches at him and shut the door in his face. As soon as I shut the door I heard Gahenna's yelling stop. I hurriedly turned the key and the engine roared to life. Slamming my foot on the gas spun the wheels before they bit into the dirt and began rolling me forwards. As I sped through the dirt path of the gnoll village I was laughing too hard to myself to hear the large thump come from the truck bed. I crashed the truck through the village's front gates and began zooming down the nonexistent road.

I really thought I was home free at that point. Nothing but me, the open road, and that tapping noise behind me. When I turned towards the tapping noise I was met with a sight that made my heart stop. Gahenna was crouched on the truck bed right outside the glass behind me. She looked like she was ready to tear me apart. Her eyes were wide and wild. Her teeth were bared in a snarl, and she was practically drooling. I watched her rear her fist back and slam it into the window. It held thankfully, but the impact threatened to shatter the glass. Another fist slammed into the window. Then another. Then another. I was trying not to crash when glass shards blew past my head, and a grey furry forearm wrapped around my throat. I gasped as it tightened around my neck, and I took my hands off the wheel to try and fight her off. I scratched and clawed at the arm around my neck, but I could barely get through her fur. As we struggled I noticed Gahenna's free hand trying to desperately reach for the truck's steering wheel. It was only when I looked back out the front windshield did I realise why. We were headed straight towards a massive canyon, and my struggling had pushed the gas pedal to the floor. If Gahenna had been a foot taller then maybe she would have been able to reach the steering wheel. I didn't particularly care to die by falling to my death so I let Gahenna start choking me out, but not before I gripped the wheel and yanked it sideways. The truck swung wide and I pushed as hard as I could on the gas pedal. The canyon disappeared from view, and instead a rock formation came speeding towards us. My vision blanked out when the crash happened. I remember peeling my face off of the emergency airbag, and kicking the door open as the cabin began to fill with smoke. My lungs burned as I threw myself down onto the grass, and dragged my body away from the wreck. I managed to drag myself to a nearby tree, and sat back against it for support. I looked up at the wreck to see a figure rise up from the truck bed. No… Gahenna jumped down to the ground and fell onto one knee. My blood ran cold when she looked back up at me. The snarl on her face showed every single razor sharp tooth perfectly as she laboured over every breath. She slowly began to step towards me. Her unsteady gait was slow, but her piercing eyes stayed locked dead onto me. I didn't have it in me to fight back at that point. Against a female gnoll a human male stood no chance in single combat, let alone a disabled one like me. I could only brace for the worst as she crouched down to straddle my legs.

Instead of a mauling I found myself pinned to the tree by muscular grey arms on either side of me. Hot breath washed over my face as Gahenna leaned forwards until our foreheads touched. Her constricted pupils moved shakily as she stared directly into my eyes; daring me to move. Time felt like it was standing still as she held me like that against her. Soon enough her finer senses returned to her, and she found her nose moving on its own. Gahenna shoved her muzzle into the crook of my neck and sniffed hungrily. Soon I felt the familiar sensation of teeth grazing my shoulder. Zenna would be furious if she did this, but she couldn't help herself. The adrenaline rush of the chase, and the primal instinct to devour the prey they had caught took over. I gasped as Gahenna sank her teeth into my left shoulder. The pain made me struggle, but she held me so tightly I could barely breathe. Unfortunately I knew exactly where this was going. Her hips began to grind at mine the moment she started to take in my scent, and her hands went to work on my clothes. The fear and adrenaline of the situation already had me half-hard but she quickly stroked me to full mast before stripping naked and lining herself up. I moved to help guide her down when both of her paws gripped my arms and held them tight against my body. “Don't move. You're mine right now. All mine." her words came out as barely a whisper between her heavy breaths. Once her hips met mine she let go of my arms and pressed herself against me. One arm wrapped around my body while the other grabbed the back of my head to guide it between her breasts. Breathing became difficult as my air was now being filtered through thick fur. The ever-present scent of mulch was there, but the smoky smell of firewood accompanied it. Her insides were hot. Really hot. It felt like my dick was wrung for everything I had. Gahenna purred as she rhythmically worked herself up and down my shaft. Even if I wanted to move I couldn't. I was trapped in a vice of soft fur and muscle, and that's exactly where I'd stay. Every slight attempt at movement was answered by the ever present threat of her claws on my back, and gently ordering me to stay still. Gahenna giggled to herself when she felt my hips begin to spasm beneath her, and a warmth spread inside of her. Trying to push her off only elicited more shrill laughter as her hips began to move again. I had lost count of how many times we continued like that, but by the time someone arrived to pick us up the sun was setting.

The horizon began to glow orange as my thoughts drifted across memories of my time here. The sound of an approaching truck dragged me back to the present. I didn't bother turning around as the truck rolled to a stop behind me, and the door swung open. A pair of combat boots hit the dirt, and take a few steps forward.

“Whatcha doing all the way out here, flower boy?"

“...just wanted to get away for a bit."

“That right? Bikes don't have enough gas to make it here and back."

“I brought extra." I say, tapping the gas can attached to the side of the bike.

They walk up behind me, and I feel a strong paw gently grasp my shoulder.

“You know the drill, in the truck."

“Can we just not right now, Gahenna?"

I turn to look at her for the first time, and she has her head tilted in confusion. She sighs after a moment and shrugs her shoulders before turning to watch the sunrise with me. Her paw doesn't leave my shoulder.

“I figured you weren't making a break for it when I saw your tracks headed this way. But I wasn't about to get screamed at by Zenna for letting you run off."

“Run off… yeah, right." I mutter.

“I know I know, but she still worries."

“Where would I even go? Can't cross the canyon. Can't survive out here by myself. Even if I did run I'd probably get captured by another clan…"

“We'd come to get you back eventually."

“That's what bothers me…"

“What?" she asks, her head tilting in confusion again.

“I guess… It's just sinking in again that I'm not leaving. I'm never going home. This is just it now."

“Hey, don't talk like that. Your home is with us now. I know we aren't the best at showing we care, but we do." she says, stroking my back.

“Is that why I'm covered in wounds all the time? Because you care?"

Gahenna looks away from me, and towards the ground.

“That's…"

“Forget it. I'm just stressed out, I guess. Haven't been sleeping well."

“Is that your fault or Zenna's? You know I can talk to her for you."

“No, it's not her fault it's mine. I'm just… just tired."

“Tired? Of what?"

“Everything. I'm tired of getting bitten. Tired of getting clawed. Tired of getting my pelvis shattered every day. And I'm tired of this fucking heat."

Gahenna lets go of my shoulder to pull me into a hug from behind. She rests her head on my shoulder, and sighs.

“Look, we can't help how we are. We get excited, too excited. You're so precious to us that we can't stop ourselves sometimes. You know how instincts are, right?"

“I know… Doesn't mean it doesn't hurt, though."

“We always try to fix it as best as we can, don't we?"

“Yeah… you do."

“We should get going. Zenna is probably worried sick about you."

“Here, let me get the bi-"

“Can it, flower boy. I've got the bike, just get in the truck."

I roll my eyes and get into the passenger seat of the truck. I watch in mild amusement as Gahenna easily lifts and shoulders the dirt bike. She carries it to the truck bed, and sets it down. Gahenna climbs into the driver seat beside me and begins heading back. The truck drives along the dirt road as we sit in silence. I'm still lost in thought staring out the window.

“Say Gahenna?"

“What? I told you, I'd take the blame if Zenna is mad."

“What am I to you?"

“Huh? You're my mate, why?"

“What does that even mean?"

“It means… You're the male I've chosen."

“What am I to Zenna?"

“What kind of question is that? You're her husband."

“Right… Nevermind, forget I asked."

“Was one of the lower girls bothering you? Is that why you're asking?"

“No, it's just that I was thinking back to when Zenna was furious you first slept with me."

“Oh yeah! She was ready to rip me in two! I knew she'd come around to the idea eventually. Always helps to have extra hands around when the kids come. I just didn't think she'd agree with the others as well. She was never very good at sharing."

“Half the time I was worried she'd be mad at me for getting dragged into someone else's bed."

“If you weren't a human she probably would be mad. Half of the village would give their right arm to have a chance with you."

“I don't get it. I'm not exactly gnoll material."

“You wouldn't understand, flower boy. You can't smell what we smell. Aren't sensitive to the right things. A human like you might as well be a pile of gold."

“So that's the reason you keep me around? Because I'm valuable?"

“No- Well, yeah but- No, that's not just it. You're one of the pack flower boy, like it or not. We gnolls protect our own, defend our property."

“Property… right." I mumble.

Gahenna pinches the bridge of her nose and sighs.

“You know that's not what I meant."

“Doesn't make it any less true."

The village slowly comes into view after an hour of driving. By now the sun has risen, and the village has begun to wake itself up. The two males guarding the front gate swing the metal doors open as we slow down to enter. My eyes scan the various dirt huts decorated with scraps of metal and bone. Some gnolls wave while others go about their day. Gahenna drops me back by Zenna's house and she goes to return the bike I borrowed. Before I can knock on the front door it swings open and I'm suddenly grabbed by 2 massive furred arms before being pulled inside. I feel the vibration of her satisfied growling in my chest, and all I can breathe in is her scent. The same mix of musk and mulch fills my lungs as I try to get some fresh air. It takes some struggling but I finally manage to free my head from Zenna's bear hug. I look up to see her staring down at me with a concerned look on her face.

“Where did you go last night, honey?" she sounds warm for once.

“I just went out to think for a bit. Sorry for not telling you. Didn't want to bother you while you were with Hera."

“Mmm… Gahenna brought you back?" she asks, almost purring.

“Yeah, I would have driven back eventually though."

“That's nice, dear… What were you thinking about?"

“Nothing, just…"

Her head tilts as I pause, and her ear flicks.

“I'm just tired…"

She hugs me just a bit tighter, and pulls me over to the bed. She lays herself down with me on top of her as she keeps me in her embrace. My head is comfortably sandwiched between her fuzzy breasts while she gently rubs my back.

“Worries are for later. You still need to sleep."

“But-"

“Enough. I could not sleep either when I discovered you had left. You will make up for this now. Then we will speak."

“...yes dear."
