{Time to get to know the Kobolds helping this dragon a little better. What exactly are they getting out of this arrangement?}
Garr looked over the pond. Several muscular canines were bathing in it, marveling that the water didn’t seem to make them wet and yet they could still feel it.
His sheath was the size of his torso, but his cock was soft and fully contained within it except the tip, which protruded and occasionally shot clear liquid from it, giving him a little rush every time it happened.
He felt somewhat normal in terms of proportions, even if he couldn’t lower his arms to his sides without puckering his chest and his back. Ethrix’s point of view showed him his back muscles were just as bulky as his chest, but at least he could see his feet for now.
Garr observed the little lizards scuttling to and from the waterfall. Some of them carried bottles filled with the fluids various furs had released. Until now, he hadn’t given much thought to who was cleaning up the messes around here, and Garr knew he himself had made quite a few of them. A glance at his sheath, and the shiny bead perched on the tip, confirmed that this was not a dream. Someone was going around keeping the cave clean, and now Garr had observed multiple Kobolds scurrying around doing just that.
The former human’s fur color changed from white to black as he entered the magical water. He waded across and climbed up the ledge on the other side. Behind the waterfall stood a cave entrance, and Garr happened to be small enough to fit inside.
He crouched and descended the curving slope, his bulk filling most of the passageway. He had to keep his arms close so his triceps wouldn’t scrape the rock. They did in a few places, and the rock crumbled against his bulk. He expected to grow at the knowledge, but it didn’t happen this time.
The passageway ended in a well-light underchamber just tall enough for him to be in, though he had to hunch over, squishing his muzzle between his chest muscles. The tops of his shoulders often brushed the ceiling.
Kobolds were everywhere, taking the bottles of fluid they had gathered and pouring them into pots and bowls and vials and mixing them with other things. On the other side of the chamber, little lizards were using pickaxes to chip away at the walls and extract the minerals. These went into the mixtures, which gave off a bluish-white glow.
Several noticed Garr’s entrance and waved to him. Garr waved back, the action making his biceps bunch up with his chest, which pushed his shoulder up and out and squished it against the roof of the cave.
Two of them broke away from their stations and met him.
“Hi, Garr,” one of them said, a she. He could tell from the scent. “You are curious what we do down here?”
“Yes, I’ve seen you all over. What’s going on down here?”
She smiled, all teeth. “You’re wondering what we’re getting out of this, since none of us are participating.”
“It seems a little strange to me why you wouldn’t.”
The male beside her took one of the vials and held it up to Garr. The black-furred canine strained to lean forward and sniff it, though his muzzle didn’t reach beyond his chest in this position.
“What’s this?”
“Just one of many things we’re producing thanks to you and Ethrix,” he answered.
“The dragon’s heat imbues your bodies with magic. It comes out in all the fluids you produce. The potions and elixirs we can make from it are some of the rarest in the world.”
The female continued. “So rare there is no record of them. They will be prized across all kingdoms. We’ll be rich.”
Garr blinked as he observed the Kobolds at work. “What elixirs can you make from us? And does Ethrix know about them?”
She: “Ethrix know we’re doing this. It’s payment for our help. He’s teaching us magic we never knew existed.”
He: “He’s that desperate for help. Dragons have knowledge of magic far beyond anything we do here because they have ingredients we lack.”
She, holding up a pyramid-shaped flask: “Here’s one potion we can make thanks to your fluids.”
Garr sniffed it. Indeed, it smelled exotic, and Garr received knowledge from Ethrix that it was made of various minerals and it had the power to grant the drinker extended life as well as ward disease.
She: “We can cure plagues with this.”
He, holding up another flask: “And this—”
Garr sniffed.
“—wards off hunger as if it were a disease. The drinker won’t have to eat or drink for weeks thanks to it. This potion could change the balance of power throughout the land.”
Garr tried to turn to each, but his muzzle was locked between his pectorals. “Isn’t that dangerous?”
She: “It’s why we’re selling these potions to commoners and not royalty. There’s also the transportation stones. Only a few exist in the world. Ethrix taught us how to make eight more. They remember where you came from, so when you touch it again, it will send you back.”
He: “We plan to make more, enabling instant transport across multiple kingdoms, but they’re much more difficult to produce. Enchantments always are.”
She: “One reason they aren’t often done.”
“Is any of this really a good idea?” Garr said. “This sounds like... nation-changing stuff.”
“Things needs to change,” she answered. “All of this will help. I, for one, look forward to getting out of this hand-to-mouth life and being able to live in a city.”
Garr tried to tilt his head to the side. It only made his shoulder and back flex and push against the ceiling. “Hand to mouth?”
He: “Cave fungus. It’s all we can eat. That was all we did for generations. It doesn’t live anywhere else, and it doesn’t keep very long after harvesting. Ethrix gave us a chance to break away. His magic will allow us to grow the fungus anywhere we want.”
She, grinning: “So go ahead, Garreth. Live your weird dreams. We’re getting all we need out of it, too.”
Garr’s sheath pulsed, and a large drop of pre formed on the tip. Both Kobolds got wide eyes and they scrambled to find beakers. They collected the drop inside four large flasks, stoppered them, and then deposited the vessels on one side of the chamber.
The Kobolds smelled enthusiastic and happy in their work. Garr overhead numerous people planning what they would do once they could leave the cave, all the places they would see, the things they would buy, the royalty they would meet when their potions ended hunger and frostbite and indigestion.
Convinced the Kobolds were trustworthy after all, Garr turned around and began making his way back up the passage.
“I think I’d like some of those potions when this is over,” Garr said. The answer came from his own mouth. “You’ll get something just as good. I promise.” “More than a parting gift? The one who brought me here said you’d grant a wish.” “I know you, Garr. I know everyone who comes here. I know what you desire, and when you leave, you will have it, and it will help you live a better life. I take care of everyone who helps me.” “Why aren’t the Kobolds participating? Don’t they want this?” “Believe it or not, Garreth, not everyone wants to be big. Not everyone is enchanted by the idea of being larger and stronger. Some are perfectly happy being their present size.” “And what about you? You’re already everything I...” Garr lost the thought. “My desires are irrational. You are helping me with them in more ways than you realize. Tomorrow is the day you make your choice.”
Garr emerged from the tunnel and faced the waterfall. His sense of the cave allowed him to see through the magical water. Several people were growing in bursts and trying to lift one another up. All this strength saw them wanting to test it. Watching it filled Garreth with a similar desire, and he crashed through the waterfall and into the pool. He did not displace any water when he splashed down and waded through. His back muscles were widening. Feeling himself expand made his tip peek from his sheath.
