Consortium 1-4: The Gathering Storm- Chapter 11
#41 of Consortium
Final chapter of Episode 4. I'll need to go about making a thumbnail now for episode 5. And we end up with at least one part of Kinou's arc being completed. Not entirely sure how people feel about episode 11 in whole, mostly because it's not one singular plot line keeping everything together but rather a bunch of smaller plot lines that have all started to take off. Episode 5 will actually be rather similar, though that will deal with the plots starting to take effect.
For Kinou, the strategy that the two of them decide is the best course of action is one that's actually designed to look like he's trying to do exactly what he is, just from the wrong side. He went about buying up a bit of body armor and a couple of weapons and gave all of them to the doll. The doll then was to try and sneak into the far side of the building, botch the attempt and trigger the alarm and try to back out and stay alive as long as possible. Since they're human they might not expect him to have to be able to use magic anyway, which is a plus. But the longer the doll can stall things out the longer he has to try and get some real information. Thankfully, his research has concluded that they did have a telepath and that he did kill that one and they had no others, though they had put out a request not only for more security but also another telepath. It made even more certain that his was going to be a now or never scenario.
At this point he has no allusions on being able to actually get any information from a single individual. Far too dangerous to pull off. At least not by himself and a doll. He had scouted out the place for a while and counted just how many guards they have. So his current plan is simply use the diversion created by the doll to slip in himself undetected and then go about getting at their servers and downloading everything there. Then hopefully both get out he's able to go through the information and figure out the next course of action.
He had scouted out the area for almost a full day, having the clay doll revert so that he could get it to be fully charged. There are a few ways to enter and unfortunately a lot of guards around. So this is going to be tough, especially since he won't have a weapon himself, just his knives. He'll have to be very careful. Even still he waits until well into the night, when it would make the most sense for someone to try and sneak in, breathes life into the doll once more and lets it go to do its thing. Just in case they do have a small communicator to share between the two of them. Not so much to coordinate attacks, but if the doll were about to die he would make sure to tell the real one so that it would let Kinou know when he needs to leave. As such it's left entirely to go only one direction. When everything is done Kinou will terminate the reception, which the doll will notice and know to get out himself.
He positions himself along one of the far walls on the second floor, using Sym magic to create a ledge for him to stand on. For some reason they never apparently thought to take measures to prevent this. They don't even have any external cameras. But it does give him a really good vantage point into the room. He picked a room that actually had the most guards present in it because then that would mean most likely the room closest to the one he is looking for. He can tell almost immediately when the alarm has been triggered by the doll. Not only does he see a bunch of the guards suddenly look down at their communicators and rush towards the door with their weapons drawn but he can also hear a very high-pitched siren. Apparently, they didn't think that someone could actually hear frequencies that high.
Once everyone is mostly departed from the room, Kinou begins to make his own move. He's very careful about his entry, knowing that there are probably sensors in here as well. But it's fairly straightforward for him to bypass the security of this room. Apparently they depend so much on their men to defend the area that they didn't really put any traps in this particular room. As he expected, not all of the men left the room. A few stayed behind. So he'll have to take care of these quickly before he can continue and do it before they can call in reinforcements.
He pulls out some of his daggers and holds them in the air as he sneaks in. He uses some Con magic to muffle any sounds coming in the room and checks to see if there are any cameras in the room. There is, but it's facing away from the window. He'll have to disable that one first. It's a simple enough matter for him to do. It might raise an alarm if anyone is actively looking at the camera feeds but he'll just have to take the risk. He takes a deep breath and then sends his daggers out, going for the quickest kill. It doesn't need to be flashy and here it's far more important that others aren't alerted.
Not a single one of them responds in time, which brings some satisfaction to him. He uses some Sym magic to cushion their fall to the ground and then moves them away from the sight of the door. He retrieves all of his daggers and also grabs one of their guns and makes sure that nothing tricky has been done to it. Knowing that his doppelganger can only hold out for so long he moves quickly over to the door the guards went through and closes it before looking for where else to move forward. There are two more doors out of this room. He doesn't have an exact floorplan for this particular building. First priority should be to find the room where all the cameras are feeding to. Hopefully it's not someone at their front entrance. If it is then he'll skip that step and just move quickly. Next would be to find where they have all their information. Most likely will be in the same location as the first if their isn't just a security station at the front. Finally he'll want some answers, especially if there is any encrypted information. Easiest done by grabbing one of the people who seem to be in charge, which will be one of the few people not rushing out to the attack and also hiding out with the information.
He starts heading further into the room, picking the door on the left and ends up finding that this one is effectively a dead end. It leads to a kitchen area with more doors further into the facility, but is not likely to be the direction he wants to go to. He returns to his initial room and considers whether or not that they might have hidden a door somewhere. But it doesn't really seem to coincide with how little preparation they seem to have made regarding their security. He tries the other door and find that it leads to a darkened room with a locked keypad door on the other side. He looks around, curious as to why it's darkened but can't seem to find anything of interest in this. But the keypad is easily enough dealt with and then opens up the door. He finds that the human that was speaking to him before is staring at the monitors of the men still firing off at the doll. They thankfully don't seem all that inclined to trying to flank him, so that's good. Increases chance of the doll getting out of this. On hearing the door open, though, the human turns and faces him.
He shouts something and points, but Kinou can't make out what it is since he didn't bring his orb. But as he had hoped he's able to accomplish all of his objectives all at once. He uses Sym magic to bind their arms so that they can't trigger an alarm and also goes about sealing up his mouth and nose so that he can't breathe. Once done he rushes over and starts searching the human, making sure that he doesn't have any weapons or anything that could pose a danger. Kinou reaches into a pocket and triggers a Language of Intent device.
"Yes, it is me. Now I have questions and you're going to answer them for me. But not here and not now," he says and goes about moving the human out of the way and begins to work on not only disabling all the security cameras but also download the entirety of their information from their computers. He doesn't know what all would be useful and figures it's safest to just grab everything and sort it out later. While he's at it he goes ahead and activates the built-in security measures of the interior of the building in all the rooms except where he's planning on making his escape.
For now it's nothing but wait. The human is struggling but eventually he's going to pass out from lack of oxygen. It wouldn't be the first time Kinou's done something like this so unless the human has a massive heart condition there's no chance of him dying from this maneuver. At least not yet. Not only that it does take a little while for the information to download as there is quite a bit of it. If he had more time he probably would have been more thorough and actually grabbed only the useful information but every second counts here.
"If it's any consolation you were very much correct in your assessment. I did come from the station. I am here in response to the plots that have been carried out. But unlike your suggestion, I have never been brainwashed. I know full-well everything that I am doing. So take some comfort in that. I am very skilled at my job and you will not suffer for very long."
"What are you going to do to me?" the human asks by way of the Language of Intent being active as they continue struggling to breathe.
"Oh, I don't know how much of your information is encrypted and there may be other things I want to know that aren't on your system. I haven't yet decided if I'm going to kill you or not. It all depends on how useful you are to me. I get everything I want and you're full cooperative I slip a drug that clears out your short term memory and go about my day. I get frustrated by the resistance and well."
Kinou just lets the statement sit. But at this point the human is too busy trying to breathe to put up much of any other resistance. He collapses to his knees and Kinou keeps his ears turned towards the human, paying close attention to the sound of his heartbeat. The data transfer is complete and so he begins destroying everything in their server. No reason to let them keep the information when he has everything he wants. The human collapses completely and stops moving. Kinou then walks over and puts an ear to his chest, listening very closely to the heart. Based on the sound he waits until he knows for certain the human is unconscious and then unblocks the human's airways. No sudden intake of breath. This is good. He uses Sym magic to help him pick up the human, then destroys the security system as well and heads back to his window. As soon as he reaches the window he terminates the signal from the doll, letting him know he's done. And to help things even further along he goes up to the silenced camera, closes his eyes and focuses hard on the object, even going so far as to let the human down to give it his full attention. He then draws power from the air and then forces as much energy as he can into the electrical grid, short circuiting it and causing all the lights to flare out. It isn't his specialty. Far too flashy for him. Usually better to just hack the lights off or maneuver around them. But his doll could use all the help it can get. And he hasn't gotten a signal from the doll so the doll should still be alive. And the lights blowing out should pull some back to try and figure out what happened in the station. And with that, he jumps out of the window, using plates of Sym magic to catch himself and then head off back to somewhere they can interrogate their prisoner properly.
