Issac waved goodbye to a very tired Vincent. It was Sunday morning at like 1 am when he got home. Issac opened his house door and turned on a dim light. His mother was on the couch asleep but no booze in hand. Lucy could be heard snoring off in his mother's room. He sighed, his mother loved that couch, it WAS much comfier then any of the beds, but no one could deny it made anyone look like a drifter to be sleeping on the couch.
He threw his bags aside and eyed his bed with heavy eyes and a stupid smile of relief, it had been a trying weekend, and it was only now half over. Jeromy, Squall, Vincent and his dad. Issac's own bed would be nice. Issac slipped into bed, his eyes shut before his head hit the pillow. A few seconds, or possibly even minutes or hours hours later, he got a text, just trying to pry him from sleep. Issac groaned, getting the phone.
It was Squall.
Issac sat up frustrated, reading the message on the too bright screen, squinting at the tiny black print.
'Not trying 2 b creepy and call my nephews friend, but I have a job site on Dakota Ave. and will b there 10-4.30 2morow. Stop by if u want. Could use a volunteer + u could use the work experience'.
It was a thorough text like Vincent's, but with abbreviations. Issac thought a moment. He could walk, Dakota wasn't more then an hours walk away. Issac smiled, but felt weird. He was showing up at his friends, uncles job after their first meeting, and Squall was awesome but odd and out there. Issac thought about it and came to a conclusion. He didn't really care about the normality of the situation. He wanted construction experience and he was offering. Done. That's it, and being tired didn't help any logic make its case, or give him the patience to pursue it.
Issac texted a conformation and went to bed. Issac didn't dream so much as thought in his sleep. Scenario after scenario of Vincent responding yes, followed by their make out followed but him turning out straight, teased Issac until he awoke, like a cruel demon.
...........................................................
The morning was rough. Issac awoke to a crash and his mother yelling. He slowly arose, walking into the hall. She was yelling at Lucy of course, probably about hidden drinks or something.
It wasn't the usual case. Issac froze in the hall, in boxers and a tee, staring two cops in the eyes. The horse and the lizard were kind of humorous, matching the fat guy skinny guy duo of many popular movies. The lizard was much shorter than the horse, and quiet obviously less buff. The horse was speaking to Lucy very calmly whilst his partner struggled to hold his mother in her seat.
"You witch! Traitor! How dare you, you promised!" Issac's mother shrieked at Lucy. "Officer I'm fine. Look! My son he'll tell you, I'm clean! Right as rain!" she was hysterical in the other sense of the word, the not as funny, deadly serious sense.
"Maam, please calm down. We've already administered the breathalyzer test, and we have done enough work here to know you to be a drinker. You're coming with us, either to jail, or the rehab your sweet friend here is prepared to pay for". The horse said calmly, turning to Issac, nodding. "Hello again Issac".
Issac swallowed, starting to understand the gravity of the situation, waking slowly from sleep. "Hi, morning". He managed weakly, his feet stuck in place.
"Tell them I'm clean!. It was a one night thing I assure you officers!"
She was a wreck, her fur was knotted and crazy, her eyes wide with shock and hysteria, and her bathrobe flashed her naked body whenever she struggled to stand out of the chair. But even with that happening Isaac still saw his mother. He loved her for better or worse, he flashed back to only four years ago when she would take him to the park, when she openly accepted his sexuality. Her hugs, kisses, her stories.......
"Son you don't have to answer". The horse continued, rudly breaking his flashback. "We have proof that..."
"Don't call him son!". She interrupted again, spitting venom. "He's not your boy he's mine! Did he come from your womb! I raised him you have no right Franko! Get the hell out of here and tell whatever Bastard sent you to fuck off!!". She started to sob, opening her arms for a hug.
Issac smiled weakly. "Love you". He said giving her an awkward hug while she sat, holding her hand the lizard at her side.
"Patricia, hold yourself together". Lucy scolded. "Don't make this too hard".
"Traitor!" His mother spewed again, they started to shout, and then the horse waved Issac into the hallway. It was a mess with shoes, and his mother asked where they were going before returning to her shouting.
"Where are you taking her?" Issac said first, arms crossed. This had just totally fucked up his morning, but it wasn't entirely unexpected.
"Anne's rehabilitation clinic. It's on lake Tahl here in Lawndale". He took a pause. "Issac you must understand, being 18 you're your own man now, unfortunately there isn't much the state can offer you in terms of compensation".
Issac scoffed. How can anyone compensate anyone for taking family away? It just made family sound buy-able and cheap "You planned to compensate me for my mother?" It was sarcastic and annoyed. "Look I don't even have a job man, and like hell I'm staying with Lucy".
The horse looked confused. "Why not?"
Issac blushed a little. "She's umm, not exactly supportive of me".
"I'm sure if you gave her time to take over...." The horse started.
"I'm bi". Issac said as a matter-of-factly. "She's like super religious and that's against her beliefs or something. I'll be a walking case for her to 'turn to the truth'." He mocked. He was very weak spiritually, not exactly taking the time to figure out what he believed, but knowing whatever he believed was not against Homosexuality.
The horse sighed, turning to open the door. "Any friend you can stay with?"
"I don't want to ask them. It'll be weird." Issac said lamely, the full seriousness of the situation not fully set in in the shock.
"Well it'll be weirder when you don't have a home to call your own, or a roof over your head at all". The horse said. "I'm sorry it had to be like this". It was genuine but Issac was a little sour at the moment. Sorry wouldn't change this shit.
.............................................................
After the police had left, Lucy drove him to the corner of Dakota with all his stuff, He claimed to have a friend, Evan who lived right on the street.
Lucy was sweet, a loveable thin black and white cat. She screamed innocence and bliss, a radiating kindness really. She said she would wait around until he had a conformation. Issac knocked on one of the doors which was answered by a confused older man.
They argued about how he didn't want the chocolate Issac was selling, then he returned to Lucy for his things. "He's cool with it for now, I'll call you if I need any more great help". He said with sarcasm.
Lucy looked hurt, but honestly Issac didn't care much, he kept seeing the two drag his mother into the cop car. She had struggled the whole way of course.
"Issac I'm sorry, but she wouldn't help herself". Emma managed in a weak voice.
Issac nodded, "I know, I just can't see it that way right now to be honest". He took his stuff, which was only a few bigger bags down the street to the construction site. It was already 11:20, so Squall should already be there. Perfectly enough, he stood by his truck, a blueprint in his hands, pointing up at the wooden structure in front of him with the Dalmatian he was pointing for.
Issac approached anxiously, but slowly. He took long slow steps until Squall noticed him and made him walk faster.
"Hey, hope this isn't weird". He said, arms up in defense. He was wearing jeans without holes, and a plaid shirt. It was out of place to also see his fur combed under a helmet.
"Not at all". Issac managed. "Thanks a bunch, this is cool".
Squall smiled a dorky smile, but somehow it wasn't stupid. "What's with the bags?. You only need work clothes you know".
Issac looked at his feet, then dropped his bags on the ground, his eyes watering. He leaned back on Squall's trunk and teared silently, looking up. Why he chose to break in front of Squall was beyond him.
"My mom got taken by the cops this morning". He started. "She's a drinker so her friend ratted her out. She's paying for rehab......".
Squall embraced the crying dog. "But she's gone". He was definite, a sturdy rock that caught even this curve ball. He was so calm it shocked Issac out of his tears, calming him too.
"Yeah". Issac said much clearer. "I don't have a home, or even a job man". Issac continued."No car and no saved money either".
The work site was loud, but they still stood there in silence, an understanding reaching the two beyond words alone.
"You need a ride to Vincent's after?" Squall asked finally. "I would call him first though".
Issac shook his head. "I couldn't handle that right now. He's too shaky at the moment himself to have a problem child dumped on him".
"If it's a friend, I'd think he would understand. But if you don't want that, then..... What?. My place is too far for your school, and that would be creepy near pedo on my part". He finished, staring at the building site. "I.....i could lend you money." He offered, "According to your stories your car wont cost that much anyway."
"No, I couldn't do that, but thanks." Isaac said, looking down, wondering how a man could be so open to a nephews friend in a day. "I don't know what to do, everything in my life just got fucked up recently".
Squall patted his shoulder. "Personally I think Vincent's is the right choice, but if you think of anywhere else that's not ridiculous, I'll happily take you after work. But I do have to work..."
Issac smiled. "Sorry, you should do that, but I don't think I'm emotionally stable enough for power tools." He joked, trying hard to lighten the mood.
Issac sat in the same place watching the workers construct the building slowly. He often found Squall's eyes checking up on him, but try as he might he still couldn't think of a better solution then Vincent's.
The bear would defiantly take Issac in for at least a little while. He could get a job, buy a new car, and somehow repair his broken life. Jeromy wasn't helping much with Issac's reluctance to be under the same roof as the bear, the taunting would just worsen, but taunting is better then cold in the gutter.
Then there was Vincent's bi-curiosity. Whether or not it went somewhere. So basically whether or not Issac was disappointed. He had to act indifferent, it was all up to the big lug. Just thinking of all the drama made Issac uncomfortable, actually living it would be worse.
But sucking it up, he called Vincent. The sooner he knew the better.
