Nano Age Sapiens - C1
#2 of Nano Age Sapiens
Waking up. He was inside some kind of dark pod that fell apart as soon as he instinctively moved to struggle free from the claustrophobic place. Sand poured in. His body was stiff and very cold, but softened after a minute, just before the sand suffocated him, by then he would try sitting, and digging his way up through the red-beige sand. That's when he saw the sun shining down on his surroundings and that he was on a beach. It did not look like paradise, though. On the shore and as far as he could see grew only moss. No trees, not even bushes. Also, the sky was not blue, but had a sick orange color with only a hint of blue. Naturally, he immediately wondered what had happened to the world, but he had one other problem: He did not remember who he was, nor did he remember why or how long ago he was frozen.
He inspected his clothes, noticing he was dressed in some kind of black spacesuit, complete with glass helmet. The pant parts had pockets but they were empty. Next, he thought of shouting, in english, which he remembered was the most well-known language and it would be most likely spoken, whatever calamity had happened. "Hello! Anybody there?" It sounded tight, since it was not audible at all outside the suit. What's more, he felt strange in his lungs as he said that. Checking his arms and gloves, he found nothing that could pass for a radio. On a curious whim, he started moseying in a random direction across the beach, hoping to find answers. Half an hour ticked away, the pod disappearing behind, and a giant bubble appearing in the distance in front of him. As he approached, he saw that it contained a city and that sea vessels and spacecraft went to and from, passing through doors and chambers. Somebody was alive, and whoever they were, they are thriving! There he stood, touching the bubble itself. It felt like plastic but could be seen through as clearly as glass. The inhabitants themselves were far away so he had to concentrate to see their features Slowly it dawned upon him that they were all covered in fur! At that moment the sea airlock opened with a loud, booming sound and water rushed between his legs. He could barely react before the current drew him with it, down in the depths. His helmet ripped off and water flowed in nose-wise, convincing him he would drown and latent memories flashed in the mind. They were sounds and images of bombs, gunfire and warmachines. He must have been in a war before he woke up. It didn't matter, he was surely dying anyway.
Seethis strolled down to the beach and park area of Cape Zoratta, with a bottle of cheap wine in his hand. He had been fired from his job and planned on spending his time contemplating what to do with his future. More precisely, he would sit on the cute boardwalk that the beach had. Since it was an old-fashioned wooden boardwalk, it was only meant to look romantic to the park guests. Ships docking in Cape Zoratta would use the modern piers that the Zoratta docklands had. As Seethis walked on boardwalk, the corner of his eye made him the first person to spot a creature holding on to the wooden logs that support the pier. Seethis, acting out of character for a moment, jumped down from the pier to try to be of help. Seethis was short, but had good physique and believed in the feathers on his body. His ancestors were parrots that could fly, after all. It shocked him to see that the creature clinging was a human, he hadn't seen one of those since he was a boy!
"Hey, uh... you need a hand?" Seethis said. The human looked at him. "Y-yes" he replied and stretched out his hand to the parrot's hand.
First he had seen creatures covered in fur and now he was being rescued by a blue parrot, a little over a meter tall. The parrot's wings hanged from his back, detached from his arms. His hand had no fingers, but three claws, one of them acting as thumb. The human stood up, the water reached to his crotch while Seethis had the water level at his belly.
"You want help out of the water?" Seethis asked and the human shrug his arms answering: "Nah..." -"Alright... It's that I used to work here but..." -"But what?" -"I haven't seen on of you guys in a long time. I almost thought you were extinct!". Seethis put his hand on his head while saying that and turned his head, as if he needed to think. The human felt he needed to get in Seethis'es field of vision and quickly pulsed over, looking him in the eyes. "What do you mean I'm extinct?"Seethis didn't want to have this conversation. "It means the Human species is dead" -"I'm not dead!" -"Listen, I'll sort this out but would you come up with me?". The parrot signaled to follow while walking up out of the water and the human complied. "Where do you live?" said Seethis. "I don't know" said the human. "Be serious, you've got to come from somewhere" -"I came from outside". The human pointed towards the dome shell. "Bullshit!" Seethis said almost interruptingly. "You can't be alive outside!" Some of the people around started looking at them as soon as Seethis said that. -"I still remember being outside" He said in an innocent, honest tone. -"Fine".
Seethis had determined this man was mentally ill. He wasted no time in suggesting going uptown where a hospital and authority buildings were. The human would get help there and would have left Seethis if it weren't for the attention they were getting. A goat took a picture while a family of wolves murmured among themselves. "Go away!" said Seethis pushing his hands in the air at the onlookers. "I know a better way" he whispered to the human while he took him with himself behind a grey-brown factory building.
Location: Cape Zoratta Harbor and Industrial District. Seethis and his new friend had left the park for this quieter area. "What's your name then, pal? I forgot to ask" The human turned his head cheerfully as if he had the answer... but despair took over his face when he realized he had forgotten he had forgotten. "My name is... I've forgotten it!" -"Is that so? I'm Seethis" -"Seeth-Dis" -"Yep" Seethis held his hand out, offering a shake. The human took it and they shook. "Cool Clothes" Seethis said, referring to the black jumpsuit. Seethis himself was wearing a brown shirt-and-toga hybrid, crotch shielded by dark blue briefs. "They look military or something" -"Uh" -"Oh, I get it, you've forgotten". They walked on, rounding a few corners. Seethis said: "This is it, the plaza is just ahead. Gotta go now, goodbye". -"Are you leaving me now? What if I'm the last human... and they cut me up?" -"No, they..." -"Please, Zingo, you're my only friend". The human wasn't a giant, but compared to Seethis's stature he was a gentle giant pleading to a tiny person.
It couldn't get any worse with the guilt Seethis felt, to him the human was a nice guy but also a loon he'd rather not hang with, if not a wanted psychotic criminal for all he knew. He could also just swear the human's face was familiar. Not many seconds of bargaining had passed when a loud voice came running toward them.
"HEY, SEETHIS! How happy I am to see y... Oh, company? Who's this?" It was a lemur, a taller than Seethis and wearing sandals, khaki shorts and a white t-shirt with the text "H" printed on it. His obligatory ringtail waved behind energetically. "Shiri, what are you doing here? I don't have time" Seethis said annoyed. "You know him?" The human and the lemur said simultaneously to Seethis. "Yes, shut up, both of you" was his reply. If Seethis could swear he had seen this human's face before then Shiri was with even less doubt sure he had seen him before. He leaned close to Seethis whispering "Dude, your friend totally looks like... what's his name; Herbert Martin?" -"Who?" -"The murderous traitor!". "Me?!" said the human, whose name might be Herbert. "He's no war criminal!" said Seethis "Shiri, that guy is dead or at least senile, not this young and handsome. Besides, he's lost his memory, an amnesiac, the brain is erased". -"Exactly! That's what he wants you to think!" "You can't mean me, I haven't killed anybody! Who are you talking about?" Herbert the human asked. Shiri stared at the human for few seconds, scratched his head, then said: "I think we should see Laya, she's a sabre-toothed library" "And who be that?" Seethis inquired. -"My boss, I work right nearby"
Seethis was glad responsibility was off him, and that Shiri(being the cuckoo man he was) had taken it on his shoulders to lead him and Mr. Martin to Laya, who could solve today's greatest mystery. Smiling confidently, Shiri pointed at flight of stairs attached to a large, boxy compound as he led the two up, then through an outdoor corridor. A couple of doors went by, until Shiri stopped at one of them, exclaiming "Here!" in joy. Herbert crashed into Shiri's back while Seethis in turn crashed into Herbert's back. "That doesn't make me gay" Seethis muttered under his breath. Shiri sized up, rooted in his pockets and found a little orange device. He touched the white door with the device, buttoned a code and the door separated in two, one part sliding left into the wall , the other to the right. A neon-esque sign of red letters lit up above the door, it said: "Smilodonic General Entrepreneur". Herbert studied like a child with almost a gasp, while Seethis looked at it indifferently. "Bored. That Laya needs more imagination". Shiri, who had walked in soundlessly, stuck his head out saying: "Well, come on in!". Thus Seethis and Herbert was in an area which they were going to be familiar with.
Something was wrong, Laya was not there. They found themselves to be in a living room, with walls painted in bright colors, lights covered the ceiling, the wall opposing the door had a desk and next to it was a staircase On the wall to the right, far away in the long room, was giant flatscreen with a sofa in front of it. "Gentlemen" Shiri said, "Laya has been kidnapped, or worse" -"What?!" Herbert exclaimed. Seethis nudged Herbert's suit-covered shoulder and said: "He's like that, always joking, my hairless friend". Suddenly, a beep sounded from the desk. "Aha! Of course she left a message! She said so on the phone" said Shiri, showing his cell phone and walking to the desk. He tinkered with a machine, and the Television turned on. Seethis and Herbert turned towards it, and a hologram "grew" out of the screen. The hologram was a smilodon, or a sabre-toothed tiger. She, of course, had two huge fangs protruding down from her upper jaw and a beige-yellow shirt that matched the color of her fur. On her legs she wore pants with the same beige color as her shirt. The feature Herbert found the most perplexing was that she seemed to have four breasts, two fairly large lumps in the area a human's breast would be, and two smaller lumps beneath them. She began to speak: "Shiri, I'm very sorry for leaving you but I got a tip of well-educated personnel coming out from Callisto on the employee market. I'm hurrying out to the spaceport to interview her" "Callisto?!" Shiri inquired bending his eyes. Laya continued: "Don't, don't DON'T do anything stupid... or bad or whatever, like pick up old friends trying to dump people of suspicious identity on you..." Seethis and Shiri looked at each other, then at Herbert and scratched their heads "...while I'm gone. Just keep routine as I outlined in the corporate manual and do not, DO NOT hesitate to call me! Seriously, I need to know! See you soon, Shiri!" The hologram disappeared followed by a soft, ambient buzz coming from the set. Shiri, then Seethis, then Herbert sat down in the sofa.
"What do we do now?" Shiri asked. Herbert hopped in to answer: "We'll call her". -"Ah, that's what we shouldn't. She talked as if she were psychic, if anyone will believe you're a terrorist, it's her" Seethis counter-argued: "If there's anything you can learn from sitcoms, it's that secrets and lies will come out" -"I still wouldn't, she'll get angry and complicate things" -"That leaves calling the police or having him follow one of us home like a puppy". Shiri got the mental image of him and Herbert sleeping in the same bed, and Herbert getting up, smiling sinisterly, eyes glowing red, then grabbing a knife and at that point Shiri didn't want to finish that thought. He moved at lighting speed, picked up his phone from his pocket and said: "Laya it is then. You two concentrate on the TV" pointing to the remote control. The lemur walked off to the desk and seated himself. Herbert picked up remote and stared at it, he couldn't remember much but he had concepts of familiar things, such as remotes. This particular remote was not familiar, since it looked more like an iPod, as it had a screen. "Let me handle that" Seethis said looking at Herbert with one eye and got the remote from him. He held it in his beak and with his claw pressed one of the buttons below the remote's screen.
A news channel popped up and text in said: "FOXY NEWS". "...engineers deny terrorism, while stating that every power plant on Titania is running and that the fire incident only took place in a housing area. Housing owner A'Danis Valkan, however, comments that HIG has been expanding it's influence over Saturn recently" Sawing this on the scrreen screen was... a fox, with a suit and a beret. He was sitting behind a large desk and behind were a window with planet Earth against a starry space, meaning the studio must be on a space station. The channel had a ticker on the bottom, that had interesting messages like: "Erops co provides insight on the brains of sapients and non-sapients." "Join us later for "Myths about Imperial society". "Foxy News, huh?" Seethis commented. -"Is Foxy News run by foxes?" Herbert asked. -"Yes, sadly" They could hear Shiri behind them going: "Yah, nah, listen mrs, well, about humans, yes, one I've had contact with" Seethis was about to change the channel when Foxy News beeped a News Alert and the anchorman said: "Human terrorism in Cape Zoratta? ASI suspects that. We unfortunately don't know much but stay tuned" A female fox next to him inquired if that was even news, and they slowly started to debate about a slow news day and if reporting terrorism was scaremongering or fair warning.
Herbert and Shiri were frozen, mouths agape. Herbert stood up and couldn't hold it in himself. He ran laps around the sofa and said: "I KNEW IT! I'M THE HUNTED LAST HUMAN ON EARTH! WHAT HAVE YOU FURRIES DONE TO IT?!!?" then breathed very fast. "Get a hold of yourself, man!" Seethis shouted. -"Don't touch me!" Herbert backed into a corner, staring at Seethis like he was a murderer. Meanwhile, from upstairs, mechanic sounds and beeps started. Shiri had seen and heard the whole thing and said to himself "Ohnoivedoneitthehumaniscrazyandtherobotisawokentheyregoingtofight!" Laya was still on the phone. She talked calmingly to Shiri: "I'm coming right now! You shouldn't have tinkered with Rossy! He's a a liability!" -"I didn't!" It was too late regarding Rossy the robot. Metallic feet drummed on the stairway until a bipedal robot stood at the bottom of the stairs. "Elevated stress patterns in voice detected" he hummed in synthetic voice. His humanoid face stared at Herbert, who responded o jump over the sofa in an attempt to escape Rossy's gaze. It took much less of a second for Rossy to fire a tiny tranquilizer syringe, at the airbourne Herbert's throat. He passed out before he landed on the floor, arms on his face like a dead lion.
20 minutes later... Laya had arrived, Hayjun trailing after to Laya's reluctance. Herbert had been transported to the sofa, his head carefully laid on a pillow. Rossy sat in the stairs, probably in deep thought, or atleast the kind of deep thought a robot engages in. Three chairs, with Seethis, Shiri, and Hayjun in them sat in front of the desk, which had Laya in it. The one named Hayjun was a large hyena, just about 2 meters tall. She wore a purple blouse. "Can we keep him?" Shiri asked "No!" was Laya's reply. -"But she scares me, and we're having her around?" he pointed at Hayjun. -"My... name... is... Haaay... Juuun" the one in question panted angrily. "You're not specist, Shiri?" -"No, she just looks scary" -"I'm sitting right here!" Hayjun protested. Laya argued: "Those black humans look scary, but you're okay with them, right? And what about other predators? Me?" -"Yes, I guess so. Sorry, that was dumb of me". Shiri remembered hearing about the Ku Klux Klan in school. He stretched out his hand and shook Hayjun's. "It's okay" said Hayjun, at peace with Shiri. Laya continued "Anyway, Hayjun is about to be hired and that stranger..." she pointed to the sofa, where Herbert was "...can't stay with us, he more likely lives in Red Hope". Seethis stated: "He said some strange things, like he thought he was the last human..." "...and implied he thought was on Earth" Shiri interrupted.
Laya's eyes expanded and she said "Earth? Hellvens, he didn't know this is Mars? He thinks he's the last of his kind too? That explains things. If I had such delusions, I'd be a little crazy too" "Don't forget he forgot his identity" Seethis added. Dusk was approaching Cape Zoratta with the sun shining on the huge martian east coast it was located on.
