What is Love? Chapter 5

The uneasiness at the dinner table, Jake swore, you could slice with a knife it was so thick. Jakob kept his head down, holding his cheek on one paw as his other held the fork which was just moving around the food on his plate. He didn't want to even talk to anyone, he just kept quiet, hoping nothing would happen, because nothing in this situation was much, much better than something.

"So, what have you been doing this whole time?"

Mom!

"What have I been doin'? How is that any of your business Care?" Care... Jakob thought, he hasn't called mom that for ages...

"My name," Jakob's mom took a harsh pause, the silence, though just for a moment, extremely bitter, "is Carrie, Dick. And it's my business, because you're my husband... and you've been worrying Jakob like crazy." Jake's ears perked at the attention brought to his name in the conversation, but he remained quiet and kept his head down. He sighed to himself, wishing they would stop while they were ahead.

"Jakob?! Why would he care, he's too busy with homework and hanging out with his friends, he doesn't even listen to us... and just because we're married does not mean any of this is your business, and don't think I can't get out the divorce papers, missy." His cockiness irritated Jakob, he knew he should be going soon. He took one last bite out of his food which... well, he didn't know what it was, but he thought it tasted along the lines of pasta or something. He got up, laid his dishes in the sink, and as soon as he was out of their sight, he flew upstairs.

Upon entering his room, he felt as if he was entering a harbor of safety and warmth, the moonlight soft through his window until he flicked the light on. It was quiet, for now Jakob thought, other than the rhythmic chirp of the crickets outside along with a quietly moaning breeze at his window. He went to his backpack and opened it, taking everything out of it and laying it on a pile. He came to his science notebook, and stopped, remembering the whole commotion he had about the hearts and all, and about Andy, and the thought that he could be gay. Then he remembered the sweetness of what happened just hours before... the sweetness of Chris... The hair on the back of his neck stood up as he relished remembering the innocent moment, at the same time though, he had no idea what to think now. He did like it... he liked it a lot... that one kiss.. So,am I gay? Is he gay? Maybe he's just bi... does he have a crush on me..? Does he consider us ... boyfriends now? Ugh, so many questions... He held his face in his paws. How would I tell my parents... would my dad understand? Does my mom already know since that discussion so long ago that we had?... The questions began to swirl in his head, not able to answer even one of them fully.

His ears perked as the yelling started, and groaned, quickly kneel-walking to the drawer at his desk and opening it, furiously looking for anything to shut it out. Ack.. where are those headphones... He continued to rummage through clothes, and just random items he had thrown in there. His eyes grew wide as he came upon a slim little package, he stared at it for a moment and turned it around and nearly burst out laughing. Oh my God! It's that condom from health class! Hah! Wow... He studied it for a moment, reading the front out of amusement. "Feels great on the inside AND out!" He giggled at that, and then just dropped it, going right back to rummaging, his ear twitched as his parents continues to not even lash words at each other back and forth, they were so involved in it they shouted at the same time, both not even hearing what the other one is really saying, only the parts that they didn't want to hear.

Ugh... them and their selective hearing... if only they would just listen to each other I'm sure this wouldn't happen whenever they're together... I wish they could just get along... and FUCK! Where did that freaking CD player go?! Jakob was starting to get very annoyed, and was mumbling as his hands flew through his drawers.

Yes! There it is! Oh, thank God... He smiled, holding it as if it were the most precious object in his life, and went to sit on the edge of his bed. He turned it on, putting the headphones on and sighing as his ears were filled with alternative music. He went back to his backpack, and got out his math book and what not and returned to his bed. He sat against the wall while on his comfy mattress, pretzel-legging and grabbing a pencil as he began to do his boring homework. He was just happy he had ways of getting away from the yelling. Yet, there was always that nag in him to do just something to stop it, but he had no clue what.

After finishing most of his homework, he just barely lifted the headphones from his ears, tilting his head to see if it was over. He heard nothing, and slowly lifted them off all the way, sighing in happiness that it was over. Jakob got up off of his bed, stretching with a soft yawn, and looked back down at the still-sitting-there condom. He smiled again, taking his headphones off and placing them on his desk as he similarly placed his books on the floor, he picked it up and looked at it again, just curious about it overall. He put it in his backpack, figuring he'd just fling it out in front of Kate to freak her out a bit. He smiled imagining her going "AHH! JAKE! What the fuck is that!?". He zipped up his backpack and fell onto his bed, stretching once more and pulling his blanket over himself, moaning under his breath from the cool pleasure of being all cozy in bed and lazily dozing off.

Jakob's weekend went by quite uneventfully, his parents were still together, which was normal (even though he always had that fear that one of these times they would actually divorce and he'd have to be one of those teens who take turns visiting each parent and well... he didn't like that idea) and Sunday was a boring, be-lazy-all-day day, as always. Monday though, was something that he looked forward to, it was his first football practice with the team, or for him, his first day to show the guys... and Andy.. what he could really do.

When he got to his school, he was pretty excited, his tail calmly swishing from side to side showing his eagerness. He also had that condom to scare Kate with, which he was sure would be awesome for him, that is, if she didn't rip his head of for being such a weird wolf as he was and trying to annoy her all the time. He felt a tap on the shoulder and looked over it to see Chris, and smiled.

"Oh, hey Chris!" His tail was wagging full-on now as he greeted his...friend? best friend? boyfriend? He still was unsure of their relationship.

"Hi Jake," he returned the smile, along with that cute and innocent blush of his, "I really kinda missed you over the weekend, y'know.." He trailed off, along with his eyes,

Jakob blushed too, half from how open Chris was, half from how sweet he was. "Aww.. I missed you too Chris," he opened his arms for a hug, still smiling and blushing, eagerly awaiting the gray wolf to hug him so he could hold him close and show how happy he was to see him.

Chris looked back, his eyes open and honest. "R-really, Jake? You missed me?" His voice was so full of innocence, and instead of waiting Jakob just hugged him himself, clutching the wolf close to him and nuzzling his neck.

"Of course, Chris, we're like, best friends, aren't we?" He stopped nuzzling his neck and looked Chris in his beautifully deep-green eyes and shivered from his mixed emotions. Upon all of this, his mind shocked back to life and he realized he was in the hallway, needing to get to class which was in... around 3 minutes he figured, and he was starting to get weird looks from people. Out of slight panic he dropped his arms and stopped hugging Chris, brushing off his tight, purple tank top of imaginary dust and smiling, embarrassed as hell.

Chris just smiled, a bit confused and gave a light shrug."I... think so, heh. We better get going to class, huh?" He giggled softly to Jake.

"Hehe, yep, see yea Chris, hah, good luck in pre calculus," Jakob giggled himself and waved to Chris, picking up his pace to get to his locker.

Jakob was at his locker again, grabbing frantically what he thought he might need for practice and slammed his locker shut, sprinting down the hallway to get there in time. He looked back to see one of the digital clocks that were placed throughout the school hallways to see the time when he bumped into someone, almost falling over if it wasn't for him catching the wall.

"WAH!" He looked to see who it was and froze, it was Andy, of all people he thought. "Oh, h-heh... sorry Andy, you headed to practice t-too?" He was panicking just a bit, he was aware now that Andy wasn't that... nice, even though he's shown it a little bit sometimes, he was sure if he ever got in his way, well... he'd be squashed to a pulp.

"Whoa... sorry. What though? You mean, you're joining the team Jake?" Jakob was surprised by not being yelled at with some smart comment or threat and his muscles relaxes somewhat.

"Um... yeah, I tried out in front of the coach last week, he said I was in so... yeah," he was doing his nervous gesture with itching the back of his neck with his paw, and he was indeed, nervous.

"Oh, wow, really?" Andy gave Jakob a suspicious look. "I guess you do kinda look like the football player type, well, glad to have you on the team I guess then, Jake!" The fox extended his paw, smiling. "Just don't mess us up, got it?"

Jakob shivered in confusion, was Andy really being kind of nice to him or was he just imagining it all, he shrugged, putting out his paw rather slowly to shake with Andy's, and his paw was greeted with Andy's tight grip but... his paw pad's, Jakob noticed, were really soft. He didn't notice he was blushing he was so struck with mixed emotions. "Uh, um... okay Andy, I'll try my hardest," What a corny thing to say, way to go Jake...

"Hah, we better hurry Jake, practice starts in ten, let's go," he kept his smile and beckoned for Jakob to follow, Jake giving a slight nod and following him all the way to the locker room.

Just being in the locker room made Jakob nervous, and that was without Andy there, which made him stir in a weird way. Well, at least I don't have those weird stomach pains anymore around him... that's a good thing, right? He sighed, looking around as if the locker room was an unfamiliar place even though he had been there countless times for his PE class, but more than that, he was checking out who else was on his team. Let's see... a dalmatian, a tiger, a German shepherd, a lion... uhhh... okay. He shivered, the team being kind of intimidating so far, most of them were really buffed up on muscle, even though Jakob was too, a little, they were a lot more than him. There was also a wolf like him except with pure white fur that, to Jake, sparkled really, clearly he had taken care of it. The last in the locker room at the moment was a super buff pitbull, who looked nasty and Jakob sighed in relief that he was on his team.

"So yeah, I'll go get your gear and junk from Coach, got it Jake?" He looked back at Jakob, pointing to the exit with his thumb.

"Oh, okay, thanks Andy, I appreciate it," he put on his best smile and nodded.

"Yep, sure thing, I'll be back in a flash," Andy gave Jake a glimpse of his pearly whites and jogged off. Jakob wondered what he'd do while he was gone since he couldn't do really anything, he went to his usual locker, flipped the combination quickly and it swung open. After sitting on the bench and opening his black backpack. He shuffled through some stuff, pulling out a new can of cologne and exchanged it for the old one he had in his locker still, and put in a white tank top and black shorts in exchange for his old gym outfit, since they were starting to get a little dirty. He zipped up his backpack and shut his locker and locked it when Andy walked back in, holding a pile of football assortments, their golden helmet on top.

"Get ready quick, practice starts really soon, kay?" Jakob nodded quickly and grabbed the pile, placing it on the bench and just flipping through it to see what there was. First he changed into the shorts they had, with the pads up around the thigh, they were pretty tight for him, and he questioned if Coach Anders had gotten the right size for him. Then he changed into the shirts and stuff they had, there were layers, which he also questioned since it was just getting into fall but it was still pretty hot out. He shrugged, getting everything on and struggling to get on the last few layers, which included the main jersey that had his number, 7, and even his last name on the back already, Moon. It was golden, or the numbers were anyway, and the main color of the jersey was a forest green. He guess that did match the team name and mascot, even though it was a little... weird, he thought. They were the Harvan Docks Tree Frogs. He didn't know if he was gay, but he was positive that whoever came up with the name, was indeed, gay, for who would name a football team, meant for big, buff guys, after a little, tiny, fragile frog that lived in the trees? And here Jake was, staring at his football helmet as he wondered about his team's name, what a hopeless dork he was.

After he was all set, he went outside to find some other members of the team outside, including the white wolf, shepherd, and pitty. And Andy, of course, who was apparently the "star" quarterback of the team. That gave him a kind of newer light even to Jakob, he seemed...more special, or something like that anyway, he thought. Along with his odd niceness lately. Maybe he's changed or something? Or... maybe he's always been like that I've just been too blind to see it? Bleh, who cares, let's play some football! Ha..ha... yeah, I'd be such a bad cheerleader... ANYWAY!

"Hey Andy, so, what did coach say I was going to play again? Like, what position?" Jake just slightly tilted his head to the side, sub-conscience happy that the helmets were customized to the type of furs everyone was and having ear holes that sufficed.

"Oh, he said you'd be our wide receiver, is that alright with you? Can you handle it?" He smiled, looking back at Jake, who blushed under his fur.

"Uhh, I hope so, I'll try." He smiled back, getting a nod from Andy who went to talk to the coach about who knows what. Jakob was kind of scared for practice, it would be his first time with the other guys, and he wondered whether or not they'd accept him right away, just as how he had questioned if his parents would accept him if he might be gay, or maybe bi, if he was lucky, he thought to himself. He looked out onto the field, the big lights, the big bleachers... and then he saw some people, 4 people, one on the left, one on the right, and two next to each other kind of in the center of the bleachers, and then he smiled. It was... Chris. He put his hand up and waved slightly, the gray wolf quickly noticing and waving back. Now he would be even more nervous, to practice in front of Chris... he shivered from the anticipation.

After that, he just kind of blanked out in practice, all he could think about was either what might happen after practice... like after Friday, but he wasn't in the mood to think about that, he had to focus.

"Hey, it's, uh.. Jakob, right?" Jake, startled to have someone talking to him, twirled to see who it was, and was startled even more to see that it was the German Shepherd. His head fumbled for words to use.

"Oh, um, yeah, it's Jakob... Something, er, wrong?" He tried to return the kind smile the shepherd was giving him but having trouble.

"Nope, it's just you know, you look a little, I dunno, in your own world. Heh, you alright?" He tilted his head, his helmet covering most of his face in shadows but Jake could still recognize the kindness.

"Yeah, thanks for asking. I'm fine, uh, nice to meet you by the way, um, what was it again?" His muscles loosened up a bit as he extended a paw, seeing sweetness in someone always made him more comfortable, and clearly this guy had something sweet in him.

"Heh, it's Leo, Leo Karter. Nice to meet you too Jakob!" Leo shook Jake's paw with his, Jake's ears perked at the soft pads he realized the shepherd had. Never felt anything so soft.. wow, who knew football players could be so soft...gee.

Feeling better at the new encounter, he tried hard during all of practice, showing off his natural wolf agility and getting a warm welcome into the team. And then it was finally over, and Jake, really, felt the need to take a shower from how hot and sweaty he had become in the layers of clothing, not to mention the closed in helmet.

He took care of himself in the locker room, taking a short shower, with a towel around his waist and all since he was a little shy. Poor towel... you got kind of... eh, soggy, heh. He got dressed back in his usual clothes and looked at the digital clock to check the time. 7:18, better get going... wow, we've been here for a while.. And then he got a little panicked. Would Chris still be there on the bleachers waiting for him? He got everything ready, shutting his locker and locking it before dashing out the door to see.

Once he finally got outside, he looked at the bleachers and his heart rose, there were two people still there. He couldn't exactly tell if it was Chris, since the sun was just starting to set and it was getting darker, not to mention he was a bit far away. He jogged to get a closer look and his high heart fell again, Chris wasn't there still. His ears fell and he just trudged along, going through the field to start on his way home, hating himself for not going faster and maybe skipping that shower. He just got off of school grounds and onto the sidewalk, about to get his phone out of his pocket when he heard running paw steps and flew around.

"JAAAAAAAAKE!!!" Jake's eyes widened and he was tackled into the front yard of the house he was in front of. He looked up and smiled, his tail begging to wag underneath him as he attacked his guest with a series of affectionate licks.

"CHRIS! I thought you had gone home!" He stopped, looking at Chris, who now had him pinned, as always Jake being so entwined with the moment that he failed to realize he was in someone's lawn, and cars were coming by every now and then.

"Hah, almost, I really wanted to wait for you though, so here I am!" Jake shivered from the sight of Chris' eyes, even though it was getting darker they sparkled and their green hue shined clear. But to Jake's disappointment, Chris got up and off of him and dusted himself off, then offering his paw. "Need some help, wolfie?"

Jake smiled, still slightly upset that Chris had gotten up but put out his paw to grab Chris' and get up as well. "Hey, thanks for coming, I didn't expect you to really.." He looked to the side as the two started on their way home.

"You didn't? I said I was going to go to every practice and game of yours, Jakob. I would never break a promise to my black wolfie..." He hooked his arm through Jake's and rested his head on his shoulder, making his fur stand up in shock yet bliss. He didn't know what to do at all, this time he did realize that cars were going by but Chris looked so... he was... so peaceful and warm there, Jake decided to mentally tell the drivers to fuck off and he let his wolfie stay at his side.

"I'm sorry, I know you said that but... I don't know, sorry for doubting you, Chris." He sighed to himself.

"It's okay Jake, just remember I wouldn't break a promise with ya, okay?" From his position on Jake's shoulder he looked up with almost painfully innocent eyes.

"I will, I'll never forget it Chris, I owe ya one." Jake looked down at the gray wolf, smiling.

"You owe me one? Well, maybe we could have a sleep over," he continued to look up at Jakob, smiling innocently, "I mean, today, just a little fun thing between us friends, it'd be cool."

"A sleep over?" Jake was obviously dumbfounded by the idea. "That's uh, new... I don't know if I could, what if my mom wouldn't let me?"

"Oh, she'd let you, why wouldn't she? Just come on, you can call her when we get to my place, you don't need a thing and we could even do our homework together!" His smile was so bright now it almost made Jake cave by itself.

"Aww, alright Chris, I'll have a sleep over with you, heh, you're parents don't mind?" He just slightly tilted his head.

"Heh,nope, I've had plenty of sleep overs before, no biggy, and anyway, both of them work a night shift so they aren't there during most of the night, no reason to stop me. Let's hurry, don't want to miss dinner, right Jake?" He kept his bright smile and lowered his arm from the hook to instead hold Jake's paw tight, and Jakob again shivered because if anything he was sure of, that grip held a lot of love.

Love...I wonder if this is what it's like...
