Shelter Within Storms

Look at Earth, our home, the birthplace of humanity. We've shed and spilt blood over land, resources, and other things. Now, look above, no, not your roof. I mean the sky, what do you see? White clouds in a blue sky? A wall of blue? Perhaps menacing stormclouds? Maybe you see what I'm referring to, the stars.

Out there, in the near-infinite expanses of the universe, is the goal of humanity. To reach up from home as a child and step out into the world as an adult. Countless hours of work, research, design, and testing went into this goal. And then, man spread his wings and took to the skies. And, just as you would fail to fly by flapping your arms, man failed to leave Sol, and crashed into the planets in her orbit.

A funny thing about humans, if you give them a cause, they forget their problems. Disease spread like wildfire across the population, but they were blind to it. In mere centuries, man's number went from ten billion, to a shocking six hundred million.

But all was not lost, man's attempts finally paid off. A fleat of ships left Sol's embrace. Eighty made it to the next star, seventy-two made it to the one after. Using gravity to slingshot from system to system, an even thirty found suitable homes, leaving the remaining fourty-two to fend for themselves. A stroke of luck happened upon Void's Embrace as she skimmed the pull of a black hole, propelling her at speeds faster than light itself. When she slowed, her inhabitants found home, a planet only slightly larger than Earth, with a similar atmosphere and temperature, two large continents, Sunrise to the East, Sunset in the West.

The planet was named 'Tectum Intus Tempestas',Shelter Within Storms*, and rightly so. Any attempt to cross the sea was met with violent wind, flight was impossible. This was only the first of Tectum's surprises. The first core sample answered by an earthquake. Tectum wanted her secrets to stay secret, for the time being.

A funny thing about humans, they don't sit still very long. Tensions built over time, the reasons, trivial. A civilization-destroying war broke out, those that lived headed away from each other, distrust heavy. Tribes formed, towns built, life was good.

But, humans eventually return to each other, and encounters are not allways civil. A single tribe called the Red Hands lived on the coast, they fished for most of their food needs, for the rest...well that's why they're called the Red Hands. As I said, Tectum has many secrets, and in time all things are revealed.
