#2 of Serra the Survivor

Well, here's the second part for those of you who read the first part. I'm going to try to get this going a little faster. This one's a bit longer than the first one, but I hope you like it.

As always, constructive criticism is welcome.

Serra sat down on a log, and sighed. It would be a long watch, so she might as well do something productive. She reached into Anthony's pack and retrieved a light leather pouch and laid it on the ground between her and the campfire, then reached for her under-arm holsters for her dual Sig Sauer P226s. They weren't there, and she began to panic; then she remembered that one was under her pillow, and the other was in her coat pocket. She reached into her pocket and retrieved it, looking at it intently. This one went in her left hand when she held them both, and she rarely used it. There were three notches in the barrel that she had been forced to carve into it, and she regretted each one. They were from people she killed with it, not zombies. If she had tried to keep track of the zombies, she would lose her mine.

She held it in her hands, looking down the sights and aiming nowhere in particular. Her combat systems booted up and she saw an ammo counter in the bottom right of field of vision with a question mark on either side of a slash. She sighed, realizing that it would be up until she went to sleep the next night.

She tapped the magazine release and slid her hand down to grab it as it fell, looking at the bullet ready to be fired. She hefted the magazine in her left hand, and a 19 popped up on the right hand of a slash as the combat program sensed the weight of the magazine. She noticed this and grabbed her pistol, pulling the slide back and releasing the bullet that was in the chamber. She supposed that Marcus had had her pistol ready to defend the camp, and had therefore left it loaded. She set the gun back down and pushed the little 9mm bullet back into the magazine where it belonged; the 19 changed to a 20. She pulled 4 more magazines out of her coat pocket and sighed as 4 separate question marks appeared stacked above the 20 on the right side of the slash and each changed to 20s as she hefted each one individually. She laid them down and grabbed the first one, and a the corresponding magazine indicator on her HUD changed from white to a light shade of yellow and she grabbed the pistol again and loaded the clip into it and watched the leading 0 change to a red 20 and the stack of 20s on the other side fall down. She tapped the slide lock release and the slide slammed forward, loading a cartridge into the chamber as the red 20 changed to a green one. She pushed the pistol into its holster, and dropped two magazines into each pocket on her coat.

"Well, might as well grab my other one." She said aloud, as she got up and walked over to where Marcus was resting. He looks so cute when he's asleep. She thought, watching him sleep. Sometimes I wish he wasn't gay...

Marcus was lying on his side, resting his head on the small pillow with his arm under it. He had thrown off the top of the sleeping bag a bit ago, his thick fur keeping him warm enough in the cold night. Serra leaned down to grab her pistol, which Marcus had moved out from under the pillow thankfully, when she tripped over his pile of clothes. She stretched her arms out and landed on them on the other side of the sleeping bear, breathing a sigh of relief when she saw that he was still asleep. Noticing that he was naked, she began to worry when he rolled over, but he didn't even notice her. Without touching the massive bear, she pushed off with her feet and flipped over him, landing on all fours on the other side.

"Looks like you've done that before." A deep voice said from behind her.

"Well, the Army didn't just teach me how to shoot, Anthony." She said to the augmented human behind her, standing up to meet him.

"I guess that's true." He said, stretching his arms as the artificial muscles of his legs flexed and stretched.

"Well, it's good that you're up, I've needed some company." Serra said, motioning for Anthony to follow her back to the campfire as she picked up her other pistol.

He did, reaching down to grab his shirt and pull it on as he jogged a bit to reach her. "So, how's about you teach me some of those moves."

"Well, I suppose I could, but we'll need to find a clear place to practice." She said, aiming down the sights of her pistol so that her combat system would recognize it and pulling the magazine out so that it would know how much it had in it. She put the pistol in her under arm holster and watched as a small Sig icon appeared in the top right corner, signifying her weapons load-out. She sighed, realizing that a full reboot meant she needed to input all her weapons into it again. As she walked, she pulled the 15 in. combat knife out of the sheath strapped to her lower leg and held it in front of her until its icon appeared.

"We're not using knives." Anthony said bluntly as he watced her pull it out of it's sheath.

"I know, my combat systems went through reboot, I need to put all my weapons back into it."

"Ah." He said. "I know what you mean by that; I need to do things like that for my legs."

Serra always wondered how limb replacement had worked, but ever since Anthony had joined the group she had been learning more. It seemed that they worked just like a regular limb would, with the exception that they couldn't feel anything. She almost pitied him for that, because she never wore shoes and loved the feel of the ground on her foot pads. I suppose it's just as well, because I've been doing this for years. It'd take him years to not need shoes like I do. She thought. Anthony didn't wear shoes anyway, but that was more out of necessity that preference. He could never find any shoes that fit his talon-like feet, and loved using the sharpened points to hold himself on things such as ledges and window sills.

"Well, let's get started." She said as they reached a clear place on the other side of the campfire.

"Okay, well this is going to-" he began, but was interrupted by a chorus of loud groans from down the hill.

"I have a feeling we won't be able to do this any time soon." Serra said as her combat systems went into overdrive.

"You start holding them off, I'll go wake everyone!" Anthony said as he ran towards the area where the group was sleeping.

She un-holstered one of her pistols, holding it in a sturdy grip as she walked up towards the crest of the hill. There she saw a full horde of zombies approaching; almost six dozen.

"Like I said earlier, long day." She muttered to herself.
