As I walked through the doors into Bio-Chem, I had a weird feeling in my stomach. Damn I hate that of feeling you get when you know something bad is going to happen, but I ignored it.

"Hey Cipher!" yelled my lab assistant Elise when she spotted me. "So what's on the schedule for today?"

"Nothing much... but we are going to run tests with fox DNA."

"Oh good I've been waiting for that for ages!" the fox DNA tests were the final test in a series of tests Bio-Chem.

Laboratories had been conducting for the government to create a genetically enhanced soldier.

2 hours later...

"Test phase 1 beginning," stated the super computer in front of me as I pressed the start button.

"Releasing filtered gamma radiation." The machine intoned

Everything was going as planned until I noticed a small flash from the test chamber. Suddenly alarms started going off as WARNING: GAMMA RADIATION SEAL BREACHED appeared in large letters on the monitor. "EVACUATE BUILDING IMMIDIATELY! GAMMA RADIATION LEAK IN SECTOR 7 ALPHA" blared the loudspeaker.

"Cipher we have to go now!" yelled Elise as she headed for the door.

"We have to shut down the reactor or else it we may have a meltdown on our hands!" I yelled as I ran to the control panel. "Elise take the coolant controls I can't do this on my own!"

"Got it... coolant temperature rising... raising pump speed to max."

"Inserting graphite control rods... reactor temperature at 5000 degrees Celsius and dropping. ARGH!"

Suddenly there was a loud explosion as the glass in the control room window shattered. Then I felt a searing pain as wave after wave of gamma radiation hit me. "Reactor temperature 100 degrees... and nuclear fission... has stopped." I said through gritted teeth.

"We did it." I heard Elise say before I blacked out...

One week later...

My body was aching slightly as I slowly awoke in a hospital bed. "Where am I?" I muttered as I saw a doctor walking up to me.

"You are at Los Angeles city hospital... it is a miracle that you and your partner survived the radiation."

"How long have I been out?"

"Seven days. We were worried you wouldn't wake up"

"How is Elise doing?"

"She is doing fine; she woke up three days ago and was moved into this room. You both have made remarkable progress, all your vital signs are normal, and there are no radiation burns on either of you."

"Do you think I can walk yet?"

"You can try, but it may be painful." As he said this I slowly sat up and got out of the hospital bed. As I took my first shaky steps I heard the doctor mutter "Remarkable, he can walk and he only just woke up..." Then I noticed Elise was watching me.

"Hey, how are you feeling" I asked.

"Great considering what we have been through. I wonder what happened to the seal?"

"Me too, we should go check it out."

"Let's do that."

15 minuets later...

As we got near Bio-chem. Laboratories it was clear that we had averted a major disaster.

There was a truck that was having the reactor's core loaded onto it. Then we saw our manager. "Cipher, Elise, how did you recover so fast from the radiation?"

"I'm not sure, but here we are. Is sector seven safe to go into?"

"Yes they just finished mopping up the radiation an hour ago."

"Good, may we go in?"

"Sure, though I warn you, it's not pretty in there."

As we entered the building there was no sign that anything had happened, just the lack pf people. It became evident though that there had been a radiation leak as we got closer to the lab. When we entered we saw what had broken the glass of the control room.

A large piece of the metal experimenting table that had the DNA on it at the time of the accident had flown through the radiation proof glass. The control room itself was in bad shape, as the intense radiation had melted most of the plastic.

"It took us an hour to get me in to rescue you guys... what you did was very heroic. We watched through the security camera as you passed out, it was horrifying. We were surprised you were still breathing when we got you out of there. Hey Cipher wasn't your hair brown before?"

"Yes it was, wonder how that happened, it might have been the radiation." I replied as I looked in the mirror. My hair was black, which was a big surprise because I am a natural brown, what had happened to me.

"Can I take a look at the radiation seal on the door, I designed it and I may be able to tell you what happened." Elise asked the police officer who was with us.

"One second let me check... this is unit 29 to command, permission to take the scientists to look at the radiation seal, the woman says she might be able to tell us what happened."

"This is command to unit 29, you can take them to look at the seal, any information that we can get is important."

"Thank you, we will go there now. Come on, we don't have all day." When we got to the door to the test chambers Elise immediately went to work. She went to the bottom of the door and using her pocketknife removed a thin black box from the door frame.

"This is the seal's data recorder; it should tell us what happened. No one but me knew about this so we can be sure the data is not tampered with. It wasn't even in the original plans," said Elise as she opened the case. Inside there was two rows of LEDs (light emitting diodes). Ten were red and ten were green. Three of the red lights were on but the rest were off altogether. "Well this is certainly troubling the seal was intentionally broken, by use of s C4 charge by the looks of things. I reckon the experiment table was rigged likewise. Tell this to your investigation unit."

"This is unit 29, the scientist who designed the seal says it has been tampered with, we will be coming out to show the proof."

"This is command, copy that we will have a team awa..." *hiss* *click*.

"Command come in, command... dam it the line is dead!"

"I don't like the sound of that, lets get out of here, Elise bring the recorder." I said as I heard footsteps from down the hall. Suddenly a man ran around the corner with a Uzi in his hand. I ran at him and tackled him with all my might. There was a loud crash as he went clear through the foot thick cement wall of the corridor.

"Cipher how the hell did you do that, that was incredible!" exclaimed Elise as I shook the dust from myself.

"I have no clue but something is definitely up we have to get out of here, come on before they trigger a lockdown."

One hour later at the police officer's house...

"Glad we all made it out alive."

"Yeah, no kidding, ouch! That hurt my left arm just star... what the hell!" exclaimed Elise as she brought up her arm to look at it. It had turned as black as coal right by the elbow as the color was slowly spreading.

"Elise are you alright?!" I asked. Suddenly I felt a wave of pain shoot through my body and passed out.

The next day...

I awoke with a start remembering what had happened to Elise, and then I noticed something was different. Everything smelled stronger and I noticed smells that I did not recognize. Then I noticed sounds were sharper too. As I turned on the light I froze.

My hand had jet black fur covering it and I had claws instead of fingernails. I jumped out of the bed and looked in the mirror. I had somehow become half fox. Jet black from head to foot, or paw I guess, with emerald green eyes. Then Elise walked in and I got my second big surprise that day...
