Walking in Paws Ch1

This is a story I have been working on for a long time and I'm trying to get my story out there. It's where a teenager becomes a furry, and how it not only impact his life, but everyone else's. This story is not going to be so happy, and will show that there is not much joy in a life of someone who is not human.

An End of Humanity

Some people ask me what happened to the world today, why did to change in such a short time. I know why they ask me, as it seems they think I would be the only one to know; yet I honestly don't know. I can only tell how it happened. I guess that's what compelled me to write this. I would start where when things got interesting, but then the people who demanded this would be hopelessly confused. It all started a few years ago, back in high school.

It was around the beginning of Spring Break, when I was a junior in high school. I guess I'll start off with the beginning of the day, getting up from bed. It was a usual cold morning in Colorado, even though it would warm up to needing an air conditioner in a few hours. I tossed my covers off and headed to the bathroom to brush teeth, shave off what little facial hair I had, and comb away the furious bed head my dirt blond hair had every morning.

"Morning Jason, how did you sleep?"

"Fine Mom."

"Nightmare again?" My mom sighed. She was short, with blond graying hair. She was dressed in scrubs to head to work as a dentist. She has had too keep up work since an ugly divorce from the lawyers being rivals, but that's a different story. "Is it possible that you might explain what it was today?"

"I don't want to talk about it," I replied.

"Fine. Just a reminder, you have to mow the yard before work today."

"Yes Mom."

"Love you!"

"Love you too Mom." She walked out the door to work. I continued my morning routine of a shower, get dressed in my usual outfit; a t-shirt, jeans, and a zipper hoddie, eat some cold cereal, and then say bye to my dog Chuck. Chuck was an old golden retriever that didn't know he was old. I headed out the door to my beat up black VW Jetta for another day of school.

I reached my first class, Modern Literature, sitting next to my friend Tyler.

"Hey Tyler."

"Hey Jason. How is it going? Ready for the test today?"

"Fine- wait test? Oh cr-"

"Just kidding... so what happened with you last night? You usually don't fall for the test joke that easily."

"Just tired." I rested my head on my arms, trying to get a little bit of sleep before class started.

"AKA I had a nightmare and it was the one involving you-"

"Not another word, besides this was different, and before you ask no I won't tell you."

"Alright... hey, I found something you might like."

"What?"

"It's this paper about half human half animal beings actually existing at one point. You know, like your fox persona, Valmern is it?"

"Vulmarn, his name is Vulmarn Renart."

"Yeah, him. Apparently, some guy wrote this paper on how those kind of things existed back in the past. I thought that the guy was nuts but I thought you might think it's interesting."

"You got me curious, you have it with you?"

"I have the link, though it will have to wait till lunch." We finished our conversation as the teacher started speaking.

"Okay class, today we are going to start reading The Metamorphosis. Please get..." my eyes were already closed before she mentioned the page number.

"This is what I was talking about." Tyler open the page.

"Man animals, the true Myths." I read out loud.

"Yeah, keep reading."

"'There are countless legends of anthropomorphic animals within human lore. Some are revered as gods like Anubis or feared like the werewolf. Though is it possible that these creatures were not just something of one's mind? Is it possible that they exist? What if I told you they did? These creatures appearances are too numerous to be coincidence of people. These man animals walked the earth, but were killed off from humans fearing their power.' Huh... interesting."

"More like crazy. I mean he thinks just because they appear in culture often enough that there are they exist."

"Well, we all need some form of crazy, just some show more than others."

"Yeah, while your little Valamen guy is proof of it you furry."

"What did I say about calling me that in public?"

"Oh come on! You know how many people don't even know about the fandom in general, least of all know what they're called."

"Still, there are people that do know and I rather not known to the public, you know how bad the stereotype is. Besides... you know your parents would love to know about that party you had-"

"I paid you back on that motel room! Can't you leave that in the past!"

"You had me to drive halfway across town, pick you up, pay for a motel, convince your parents and MY parents that my car's heater blew and fluid started leaking, forcing us to stay in a hotel. Not something I can easily forget Tyler."

"Alright fine, you keep my secret and I'll keep yours alright?"

"Deal."

After a few more classes, I headed home. After putting away my back pack and hoodie, I checked on Chuck who was still the happy old puppy he always was. It was my day to walk him around the neighborhood so he was constantly pushing me to get his leash. "Alright, alright, just sit down. And I can get this on." I clipped it on and headed out with a few plastic bags. After a few blocks I saw a fox run across the road. Chuck being the energetic dog he was bolted after the fox. I tried to stop him but he refused to stop, eventually leading to me releasing the leash. I had to run at full speed, going through yards and around houses chasing Chuck chasing the fox. Eventually we reached a brick wall, Chuck trapping the fox. I thought the fox would just bolt when it could, but it was looking at Chuck with intent to attack. I leapt onto Chuck to stop him from going forward, but the fox still pounced. It immediately bit my arm drawing blood. It refused to let go of my arm, so I had rip the fox's muzzle off my arm. It tore through my skin with each pull, eventually getting it off. The fox still was going for me, so without thinking I started bashing the fox's head onto the ground. I stopped when I didn't feel any resistance after the 5th blow. I looked at the limp, most likely dead fox, concluding that it had rabies. Chuck started to pull away, trying to get at my wound. I pushed him away and grabbed the leash again. I took off my shirt and walked home shirtless, still gripping the fox's corpse for the hospital.

I reached home, hearing a welcoming "Hey Jason!" from my Mom. She looked to the front door from the kitchen seeing me with a bloody shirt on my arm and a dead fox in my hand with a bloody muzzle. She didn't even say a word before she grabbed my good arm and dragged me to the car, leaving Chuck locked inside the house. She drove with lead feet to the hospital, me finding the fox still in my hand, still not moving. As she screeched to a halt in front of the hospital, she yanked me out of the car pulling me as fast as she could to the front desk of the hospital. "My son was bit by a fox, I need him to be tested for rabies."

"I'm calling for a doctor now... I'm guessing that's the fox that bit him?" The receptionist pointed to my hand.

"It's not our pet so why else would we have the thing?"

"Ma'am, I need you to calm down, rabies can be cured within 10 days, and it looks like it hasn't been one. Here is your doctor." She motioned to a man approaching us in a white lab coat.

"Let's hurry to the room and stop that bleeding."

The doctor was rolling a bandage around my arm, Mom standing near with worry still on her face. "The test results should be coming soon, with the antibodies if the fox did have rabies. If it did you will have to come three days later, then four days after that, then seven after that for the vaccines. We will be- here it is now." A nurse came in with a tray of two needles.

"Well, let's just get them over with." I waited as the doctor massaged my arm next to the bite then slowly pierced the skin and let in the antibodies. Then pulled it and placed a small band-aid on it. Next was the actual vaccine, again through the arm but near my shoulder.

"And we're done here. Just come back in three days to give you the second dose."

"Alright, thanks... um, can I borrow a shirt? You kinda took mine."

"I have a coat in the car you can use." Mom said, leaving the room as she finished talking.

"Think this would be a good time to mention something." The doctor said in a serious tone.

"Huh?"

"There was rabies in the fox, but that was not the only virus we discovered within the fox."

"Okay, so do I need to take more meds or something?"

"This is where I need you to stay calm. It had a virus that we have never seen before. I would suggest you would stay here... though the problem with that people would start wondering why you are here that a rabies patient is stuck here. Then doctors get suspicious then look in your file and find no reason till they find the virus and tell it out to the world, causing panic."

"Wait, you rather keep a new virus a secret that does..."

"I can't even tell you the symptoms or even what to look for."

"So a virus that you don't even know what it will do you want to keep secret and wave suspicion than do what you are supposed to do and protect the masses?"

"We are able to know it isn't airborne as it specifically came from the fox's saliva along with the rabies. That gives me a loophole of not telling the masses, and the reason I rather not tell the masses is because keeping it a secret is better than causing mass hysteria of people that think that an animal bit them so they have this virus that we don't know what it does. I need you to just say you had a rabies shot and that's it."

"Alright... but I should keep an eye out if something out of the ordinary starts to happen?"

"Yes, I'll tell your mother about it when you come back in three days. I need to spend some time to study the virus before I inform her. I may call you though if I find this virus to be fatal."

"Okay... tho-"

"I'm back!" Mom said coming through the door "Here's the coat Jason."

"Thanks, so that's all doc?"

"Yes, just come back in three days and come back if you think something isn't right."

"Thank you, have a good day!"

After coming home and having dinner, I thought the best thing to do would be to call somebody and tell her what happened, a very important somebody. "Hey Rachel."

"Oh, hi babe! Didn't know you wanted to talk. What's going on?"

"Well, I kinda had to go to the hospital earlier."

"Oh no! Are you okay?"

"Some rabid fox tried to kill me, so I had to get a rabies shot. Nothing too bad.

"That's good... wait you said a fox tried to kill you?"

"Yeah... so?" she started laughing a bit. "I don't get how a rabid fox is funny."

"Vully is basically you as a humanlike fox and-"

"Hey! Vulmarn is not basically me!"

"I've been your girlfriend for six months and the only difference between you and Vully is the speices. Anyway, a fox tries to kill you and Vully is a fox. Don't you find it a bit ironic?"

"I guess... I don't see how it's funny still."

"Never mind, I actually need to get some sleep, though can you meet me tomorrow at the trails? I want to make sure you are okay."

"Sure, see you then!" I hung up the phone.

Went to bed, but not to sleep. I spent the night wondering what this virus would do. Would I even live to graduate high school? Would I be able to walk in the week? Would I even be able to think tomorrow? I didn't even sleep a bit as worries funneled through my head. I didn't even realize it was already morning as the thoughts zipping through my head. I realized I spent the whole night awake, as my phone's alarm buzzed. One more day of school I guess.

I was walking through the hallways to my third class, in my usual outfit.

"Hey Jason, how is it going?"

"Oh, hey Tyler. Not much."

"Not much my ass. I check Facebook last night and I see Rachel saying how she hopes you get better from a rabid fox bite?"

"Yeah, I got bit, so?"

"How many people do you know get attacked by a rabid animal?"

"Alright. So you want to see the bite I guess."

"If you can."

"Here it is." I pulled my sleeve up to reveal the bite. It was a ragged red triangle dotted with scabs.

"Cool. So I assume you got the rabies shot?"

"Yeah." I pulled my sleeve back down. "Though I hope rabies is the only thing I got."

"Well I guess you'll find out if you start vomiting your guts."

"Yeah..." Or dead I thought to myself.

"Well, it's time for English. I don't want the teacher giving me more homework for being late."

The day went by quickly, though most of my thoughts were dedicated to more of the virus. The virus that was unknown to mankind, and now it was in my own body. The day went by, and classes were done before I knew it. I nearly forgot my meeting up near the trails with Rachel. I headed out to the trails and arrived in the parking lot with Rachel leaning against the fence.

"I was close to calling you to get your butt over here. What was taking you so long?"

"Sorry, busy thinking about... never mind. Let's get going."

We started through the more wooded trail, as it was a bit gentler than the others and neither of us were really runners. Rachel was focused on finding out about the fox while I was forced to simply answering the questions, till I said "I'm just glad it was rabies."

"Rabies and..." Rachel added.

"Just rabies, that's it. Honest."

"Jason, stop lying and tell me what else did that fox have."

"Sorry, I can't tell-" Rachel smacked my head.

"So there IS more than just rabies. Okay, what did you get."

"I can't tell you." I said quietly.

"And why can't you tell me?"

"The doctor told me I couldn't tell anybody."

"Well, how about a bit of a race to the old rotted tree. Loser has to tell a secret of the winner's choosing."

"Oh come-" Rachel was already running down the path at full speed. I chased after her half heartedly, but then I started wanting to run faster. I picked up my pace, feeling the wind of my speed lift my hair. I wanted to go faster, the running giving me some form of euphoria. It was begging me to bolt, and I gave in and ran at full sprint. It wasn't long till I passed Rachel, and I kept running along the path, my feet and hands pushing me along the path towards the tree. I didn't even care to stop when I passed it, I just kept going along the path. I leapt with each stride till a large rock slipped under my weight leading me off the path onto a decline. I tumbled down into the trees before a tree broke my fall back first. I felt my consciousness fading... Rachel spotting me from the path... I lifted myself up to my knees... Rachel dashing to catch me... I fell onto an black hand.

My eyes cracked open to a blinding white. I felt my head swimming in a pool of confusion, nausea, and exhaustion. Though the nausea was the first to kick in with the first few seconds as I immediately felt bile come up my throat. I held my mouth as tight as I could... though that lead to find my mouth was not truly mine. The bile seeped through my lips as I tried to keep them shut, seeping onto a paper gown. Though it was of little importance as I slowly moved my mouth, feeling something moving more than just a chin. As my vision started to clear, I saw a short orange furry tube thing coming from my face. A little black button was attached to the tip of the tube. I lifted my hands to remove the tube, but when I saw my hands, I found they were wearing black furry gloves with black leather pads on the fingertips and palms. There were also black sharp triangle nails attached at the fingers. I examined my entire arm and found the glove traveled up into the gown, the black fur changing to orange just below my elbow. I looked at my chest beneath my gown to find a cream white fur covering the front of my chest framed by the orange fur. I heard a shout from outside the hospital room, causing my ear to twitch. I was about to ignore it, but my ears were not supposed to be on the top of my head. I brought my hand up and I felt two furred triangles parting my hair. I noticed a mirror on the table near me. I snatched it up to see what was I wearing on my face.

Though the mirror gave me the reflection of some fox thing with orange fur, a small black nose, long black whiskers, and furry triangle ears on the top of its head. But the fox had my blonde hair and human eyes... my eyes. I heard the doors of the room open as reality finally hit me... that the fox... the one in the mirror... was me.

Walking in Paws Ch2

**A Sterile Grave** I heard the noises of doctors scrambling around me trying to get my attention and asking me questions. All I did was look in the mirror... that fox blinking at me, yet that fox was still me. That fox would just keep reflecting...
