The Duel of Legends-Chapter 4
#4 of The Duel of Legends
Schande followed the long, dark tunnel, followed closely by Evan and Thomas. He was projecting a small ball of fire from his maw to use as a makeshift lantern. The flames emitted an eerie glow, that seemed to dissipate into total darkness. The light made the stalactites and stalagmites in the cave cast shadows that struck fear into the very soul. Schande was scared out of his fur, but he had to stay strong and lead the way. He mustered all the courage in his spirit and pushed forward.
"How long is this FUCKING tunnel?" asked Thomas.
"I don't know. It seems like it goes on forever, doesn't it?" said Evan.
The three little Pokemon walked in a straight path for about ten minutes. At last, at long last, Schande noticed a light at the end of the tunnel. Schande swallowed the little ball of flames.
"Look, there's a way out!" said Schande in relief.
They all started running, or in Thomas' case, floating, towards the end of the cave. As they approached the light, Schande's ears twitched. He started picking up strange noises. He skidded to a halt and threw out a paw to stop Evan and Thomas.
"What's going on Schande?" asked Evan.
"Shh! Listen!" said Schande.
Schande listened hard, inching closer and closer. He could hear...blasts, as if there was a battle going on! He inched closer and closer, until he heard voices.
"Come on, you can do better than that!"
"Hey, I'm trying!"
"Look Griff, you need to summon your inner power. Now come on, use Flamethrower again!"
"Okay, Kuro!" said the voice named Griff.
Another blast was heard. Schande inched closer. Soon he could see a large figure. As he got closer, he could tell that it was an Umbreon. Except, he looked different. His ears looked like they were...broken about halfway up their length. Even more peculiar, his ears were almost completely yellow, instead of having rings. His tail was the exact same way, almost completely yellow, and no ring.
"Good, that one was better! You still need to put a little 'Umph!' behind it!" said the Umbreon. Schande was watching intently, when a noise erupted from behind him.
"FUCK!!!" shouted Thomas in his Tourette's attack, his voice echoing throughout the cave.
Schande's heart fell to the pit of his stomach. Evan and Thomas ducked behind a large boulder in the cave. The Umbreon whipped around and spotted Schande. He growled, and is eyes started to glow a light-blue color. Schande felt his feet leave the ground. His body, suspended in mid-air, suddenly shot straight at the large Umbreon. Schande braced himself for a sudden collision, but he Umbreon side-stepped. Schande instead careened into a tree. Schande crashed into it, hard, back-first. Schande hit the ground on his stomach.
"Who are you? How did you find this place?" demanded the Umbreon fiercely.
"Uh..I-I...uh..." Schande stammered, shaking uncontrollably.
A small Vulpix walked up behind the Umbreon, with a small look of fear emblazoned upon his face. He was a strange little Pokemon. Unlike Schande, he was almost completely purple, with gray fur at the tips of his paws and tails. He had a lip ring, and seven ear rings, all in a row, with the colors of the rainbow, on his right ear. The most peculiar thing about this Vulpix, was his eyes. They were multicolored, flowing through each color of the spectrum evenly.
"Who is that Kuro?" asked the Vulpix fearfully, clinging to the Umbreon's front leg.
A Jolteon walked up to Kuro the Umbreon. He also had a strange appearance about him. He...had a tail, which was not normal for a Jolteon. It was yellow and fluffy, almost like a Mightyena's tail. He also hade one blue eye, and one green eye. The most odd thing about this Jolteon, in Schande's opinion, was that he had a shackle with a broken chain attached to his left paw.
"What's going on?" asked the Jolteon.
"Skye, this strange Vulpix is trying to take our place away from us!" said Griff.
Skye the Jolteon growled at Schande. Schande was speechless with fear. His eyes were the size of lollipops and he was shaking uncontrollably. Kuro growled at Schande.
"What's your purpose?"
Schande started to stutter like a fool. He was too frightened to put two words together, much less a full sentence. Kuro rolled his eyes in annoyance.
"Stop blathering like an idiot! It's a simple question, what are you doing here?"
"I-I was just exp-ploring the f-forest, and I found the c-cave and followed it!" stammered Schande.
"There was a bush in front of the entrance! So you just 'conveniently' stumbled behind it?" growled Skye.
"U-uh...I-I...w-well..."
"Spit it out!" shouted Griff.
Schande whimpered pitifully in fear. Tears welled up in his eyes, his tails tucked in between his legs, and his ears flattened against his skull.
"I'm sorry! P-please don't hurt me!" Schande cried pitifully.
At that moment, Evan rushed to Schande's rescue, followed closely by Thomas.
"Don't hurt him!" shouted Evan.
Kuro turned around and growled, but when he saw the young Raichu, he gasped and widened his eyes.
"Evan?"
"Kuro?"
Well, if you couldn't tell, this created quite an awkward moment for all of the Pokefolk in the area. The Raichu and the Umbreon knew each other, that's not strange at all, right?
"What are you doing here, Evan?" asked Kuro.
"I could ask you the same question!" giggled Evan.
"Kuro, how do you know this kid?" asked Skye.
"This is Terrance's son, Evan." replied Kuro.
"Really? He wasn't at the house last time we were there." said Skye.
"Oh, I was probably out with Thomas here." Evan extended a paw, "Evan Harrison. Pleasure to meet you!"
"Skye Thunders. Nice to meet you" said Skye, shaking the extended paw.
Schande, all the while, was watching in disbelief, his muzzle hanging open. He finally worked up the nerve to speak.
"Uh yeah, hi. Um...how is it that you two know each other?"
"I work with his father on occasion. Wait...how do you and Evan know each other?" asked Kuro.
"Allow me to answer that. Remember when my dad told you that we were thinking about adopting? Meet the new member of the Harrison family!" said Evan cheerily.
Kuro widened his eyes and drooped his ears. He turned around and looked at Schande, who flattened his ears. Kuro walked up to him and held out a paw. Schande was hesitant, but he took he extended paw. Kuro helped Schande to his feet.
"Very sorry for the misunderstanding," said Kuro, giggling nervously, "I'm kinda protective!"
"Kinda?" said Schande, giggling.
"Allow me to introduce myself," Kuro extended a paw, "Kuroodo Dise, but everyone calls me Kuro."
Schande shook the extended paw, "Schande Thompson, everyone calls me...Schande."
Kuro chuckled and indicated the Jolteon, "This is Skye, he's my mate."
Skye ignored Schande completely and began to groom his paw.
"And this is my son, Griff Beeks." said Kuro, pointing at the purple Vulpix.
"Hello!" said Griff merrily.
Schande giggled and waved at Griff. Kuro turned to Evan. They started to catch up on old times, as they had not seen each other in quite a while. Skye sat down and leaned up against a tree, reading a rather large book. Griff started shooting Flamethrowers at boulders.
Schande looked around at his surroundings. They were in a circular clearing surrounded by tall trees. To Schande's right was a path that seemed to lead deeper into the forest. Curiosity got the best of Schande, and he started to follow the path. Surely the others wouldn't notice his absence...
The path was long and winding. The trees cast long, spooky shadows on the ground in the setting sun. Schande felt a sudden chill, like he just walked into a refrigerator. Fear started to creep into his very spirit. He would've turned and went back to the clearing, but he picked up a sound off in the distance. It almost sounded like...water?
Schande walked in the direction of the sound. A lake soon came into view. Schande gasped at what he saw. The lake was crystal blue, and clear as day. The blazing sun setting over the horizon cast magnificent hues of orange and yellow over the light blue water.
"Wow..." breathed Schande.
Schande listened to the small waves lap against the shore. A cool, pleasant breeze whipped against his cheek. Schande drank in the amazing view before him. He smiled and shut his eyes, sighing contently.
"Beautiful, isn't it?" said a voice behind Schande.
Schande jumped and whipped around, causing him to stumble and fall into the surf. The water wasn't deep at all, ankle-deep at the most. Schande looked up to see who had spoken, and saw Kuro sitting on the bank, chuckling.
"Kuro! You almost gave me a heart attack!" laughed Schande.
"Suppose I should've given you some warning, huh?" giggled Kuro.
"You think?" chuckled Schande.
Schande stepped onto the shore and shook himself dry, splashing Kuro a little. Kuro sat down next to Schande.
"So tell me a little about yourself, Schande." said Kuro.
Schande blushed.
"Well, there's not much to tell. I was born into the Thompson clan. My dad...didn't really accept me. See, I come from a centuries-long ancestry of Alpha Male Arcanine. Well, you can tell that my father was deeply shamed that I turned out to be an Omega Vulpix. He was the one who gave me the name 'Schande', which means 'disgrace'..."
Schande sighed and looked away, ears drooped. Kuro put a paw on his shoulder consolingly. Schande quickly wiped away the tears that were leaking over his eyelids.
"My dad did eventually get his Alpha Male Growlithe, and I was pretty much an outcast in our clan. My brother, Ehre, got the royal treatment."
As Schande relived his past to Kuro, his voice started to get menacing. Kuro widened his eyes at he sudden fierceness in his voice.
"Ehre was the favorite of the clan before he could talk! Dad always tried his hardest to separate us...and it worked. The last thing Ehre ever said to me was 'Hey, Schande, how does it feel to be a disgrace?'"
Kuro gasped, appalled, "He did not!"
Schande let out a small sob. Kuro rubbed Schande's back consolingly.
"I almost killed him that day, but my dad stopped me from strangling him. My dad probably would've snuffed me out right there, but a rival clan of ours ambushed us before he could pounce. The entire place was in chaos. Women and children were running in every direction, the men, including my father, were fighting the invading force. I took refuge in a nearby cave, and waited for the battle to stop. Hours later, when the blasts stopped, I left the cave and saw the carnage. Our village was ransacked, and there were bodies everywhere. I scanned over the dead, and saw that my parents were killed. I didn't see Ehre anywhere, so I figured that he took refuge with the rest of the survivors. I had nowhere to go, so I wandered for days. I eventually collapsed at the orphanage in town. I lived there for almost nine years, until today, when the Harrison's adopted me." Schande finished his story with a sigh.
"Well, I guess it turned out for the best. The Harrison's are great people." said Kuro warmly.
Schande smiled. He could tell that the Harrison's were good folk. He felt...lucky to have been adopted by them. Kuro stood up.
"We should probably go, Evan invited Skye, Griff, and I to eat dinner with you guys. We noticed you were gone, so I came to look for you."
"Oh, okay!"
Schande got up and started following Kuro, when Schande stopped abruptly. He picked up a small sound from behind him. It sounded like...whispering. Schande turned his head, listening hard to try to hear the sound again. Kuro had to raise his voice to get his attention.
"Schande! You coming?"
Schande jumped slightly.
"Y-yeah!"
Schande took one last look at the sunset over the lake, and followed Kuro down the path...
