#2 of Lost in the world: Home

The dining room was colored the same as the living room. A long sectional table in the middle, surrounded by six chairs, two on each long side and one at each end. A light chandelier hung from the roof, flooding the room with light and reflections off of the small glass crystals, creating rainbows along some portions of the wall. Slayne sat at one of then ends, Chrissy smiling at him on his left and Jen grinning at him to his right. Amy sat next to Chrissy, with Luceil at the other end of the table across from Slayne. The meal spread before them on the table consisted of a large glass bowl filled with a heavy salad, a serving platter mounded with orange glazed chicken and pan fried noodles, several plates covered in sliced cube steak on top of rice. The smells of all the wonderful ingredients filled the room and teased the palates. "Wow! You two went all out, I cant wait to try your cooking." Slayne said to Luceil and, her some-what daughter, Amy. His eyes darted between the various plates as he subconsciously began licking his lips. It had been over two days since the last time he had even seen food, and his stomach acknowledged this with a loud rumbling inside of him. "Please Luceil can we start?" Luceil nodded giggling as she herself began placing some salad atop her plate. As if given a signal they all began placing food upon their plate, Slayne of course over stuffing his with chicken and cube steak with rice.

Dining had ended almost an hour ago before the lot began speaking and reminiscing of times past and days to come. "So wait? This city has a night school that lasts as long as a regular school? With a lunch and passing periods, and P. E.?" Slayne inquired, his second plate bare.

"Uh-hu! That's right, it's great!" Chrissy replied with a pleased factual look upon her face.

"But it hasn't started yet? Right?" Slayne continued. The rabbit nodded in correspondence. "Then why are you wearing the uniform?" He continued.

"It's because she can't wait to wear it. Or wait for school to start." Jen spoke up. Before Slayne could say another word he felt something on him, rubbing along his thigh. Not wanting to freak out he calmly looked over to Jen, who had a giddy smirk on his face. Slayne pushed his hand away, hoping it to stay that way. "Oh one other thing," Jen sounded a little disappointed, yet still sounding as if he accomplished something. "I believe Luceil has already enrolled you, your uniform should be in her room. You can get it tomorrow." Luceil had taken Amy to bed a few minutes earlier, it was about three in the morning and the sun had not risen, but was getting closer. Being nocturnal it was getting close to their normal sleep cycle. "Now what are we to do of your sleeping arrangements?"

"Forget about it." Slayne expressed with a tone of not caring. "The sofa is rather comfortable to me."

"Oh speaking of forgetting!" Chrissy started in. "I heard on the news that some old man just recovered from amnesia. That must have been awful!" An interested look crossed Jen's face, while Slayne glanced over cooly from the corner of his eye. "If I ever had amnesia, I wouldn't know what to do. I would probably go insane, or kill myself! To live with not being able to remember anything...I couldn't do it."

Slayne abruptly got up without a word and walked out of the room into the back yard. "He's probably getting some fresh air Chrissy, now please continue." Jen stated.

Outside Slayne had slumped down, back to the wall. "They say they would hate to forget. No, I would love to forget." Dawn was just breaking, bringing bright orange-yellow hues over the landscape, though the source of it remained unseen. The grass around and under him was damp and cold with pre morning dew, soaking the bottom of his tail. "So many bad memories, and almost all of them were my fault." The night stars had faded away, but the dark sky remained in over half the sky. "After that day I should have know nothing would ever be good again..."

Red lights circling the inner confines of the boxy ambulance brought little to the young pup. His fur singed and blackened in some areas from soot, his nose had been heat dried. Not much could be seen or heard other than a glowing light refracting off the small windows of the ambulance, or an order from one to another. The pup sat there, motionless, wanting some kind of hope or acknowledgement, but non came and he remained alone. Staring, waiting, wondering when they would tell him that everything was OK. Soot and ash drifted by the window now and again, reminding him of what terrible thing he had caused only an hour ago. This was the brightest night he had ever seen, but would lead to his darkest day. As the last of the crackling fire died, final, someone heavily clothed opened the door of the ambulance. The pup stared with wide eyes, hoping for something good, his violet eyes as big as plates, but it never came. The harshest voice had come from one with a voice as soft as clouds. "We-we did all we could, but..." nothing more needed to be said, the attempted words of comfort said it all.The pup looked down at his charred black hands with despair. "We'll find you a place to stay until you get better." Things would never be better. After that moment the pup lost track of all time and place, he was a living corpse as day, weeks, months, and eventually an entire year passed him by as if they never happened. Nothing from that period could be recalled, to him it was only a dream which he chose to ignore completely, he has no memories of the orphanage he had resided in for over a year without saying a word, nor the adults who tried to help or the children who mocked him, he could not remember the one child who tried to befriend him. If anything he would only remember sitting in a corner staring at the orphanages blazing fireplace, hating the very sight of it, and for what it was half responsible for, his head resting on his knees.

The sun had just peered over the house, lighting the sky and Slayne's memories ablaze. "I...I need to stop this thinking, it's not healthy." He rose up wiping his hind end and tail off. "The others are probably sleeping so I'll crash on the sofa again." Slayne retired for the day once more to the darkly colored sofa.
