Lately, people have been asking me how all of this got started. I grin and laugh slightly. "Well, it all started with this guy right here," I say as a motion towards the arctic fox. He sticks out his tongue and elbows me softly in the ribs. I laugh as he interrupts. "It wasn't all me. It was mutual between us." But as I now reflect on the question, I begin to wonder how all of this really started. I can remember everything perfectly, but just how everything fell together really causes my mind to spin. You know that part of your life where you look around at all you have done, all you have accomplished, and think about how you even got here where you are today? I often have these thoughts and I have to admit that it's sometimes unhealthy for me. I tend to dwell too much in the past and think to myself what I could have done differently, but then that significant someone pulls you back into reality, and suddenly I find myself satisfied with all of the toils and trials I pulled myself through. Of course, I didn't get through all of it alone.

I watch as the autumn trees rush by in a hazy blur. I fidget with my seatbelt and shift my legs as I near the end of my six hour trip. A dark blue sign with the words "Welcome to Xavier University" causes a wave of excitement and apprehension to surge up my body. I can hardly keep still. "We're here fella." My dad says as he pulls into the main building's parking lot. I glance over at my mom in the passenger seat and I can tell she is getting ready to have another waterworks session. She cried for most of the three hour drive, and now she is getting prepped for another hour. Sure enough, as soon as I step out of the car, I find myself constricted by her arms as I'm pulled into a hug. I sigh and go limp as she sobs over my shoulder. "I can't believe this is actually happening! You have no idea how proud I am!" She lets go and sets her paws on my shoulders. "You need to promise me that you'll visit us whenever you have the chance." I roll my eyes and sigh. "Mom, I can't visit you because freshmen aren't allowed to have a car." "Then we'll drive up and visit you!" She replies back. I give an exaggerated groan and receive a mock glare of annoyance from her. "Hey, get your tail back here and help me unload all of your stuff!" My dad yells from the back of the car. "Oh honey, don't worry about your stuff! Go and explore! See your dorm!" My mom suddenly gives a shriek that causes my ears to flatten back. "Your roommate could be here right now! Oh Kale, go and meet your new roommate! Don't worry about your stuff! Your father and I will bring it to your room." I open my mouth to protest, but my mother is a stubborn German wolf, so I know that just trying to argue with her and get your way is like trying to communicate with a fish. It's impossible. So with a sigh, I scoop up two of my bags and sling them over my shoulders before leaving the parking lot. The campus is beautiful. The fall colors and crisp autumn air send a surge of excitement up through my body. I walk casually through the other crowds of people that are scattered everywhere. No one really notices me. Nothing unusual here, just your average gray wolf taking a stroll through the campus. I pass by a husky wearing a Xavier football jersey and I feel a slight smile tug at my muzzle. In a few days, I'll be wearing that jersey. I suddenly realize that I really have no idea where I'm going, and I fumble for the map of the campus in my short's pocket. It's unusually warm for an autumn day and I'm already starting to sweat slightly. I scan the map and discover that the guys dorm building is right across from the football team's practice field. I fold the map back up and end up following a cougar and an otter to the dorm building. The dorm building is just as beautiful as the rest of the campus, and I really don't know shit about architecture, but the building reminds me of the old Victorian mansions I once studied in history class. I enter through the glass doors of the building and a rush of cool air greets me as I enter the air conditioned lounge. I scan the room briefly as I approach the red fox who is sitting behind the administration table, a book in his paw and a bored look across his face. "Name?" The fox asks monotonously without looking up from the book he is reading. "Kale Milensky." I reply as I adjust the shoulder strap on my duffel bag. The fox's ears suddenly perk up at the sound of my name, and he looks up with a gleam in his eyes. "Kale Milensky? The freshman?" The fox asks. "Uh, yeah. I guess that's me." I reply curiously. "Well Mr. Milensky, it's certainly an honor to meet you." The fox says with a bit more enthusiasm than before he knew my name. "I've heard so much about you and I've watched all of your high school football games. You certainly are a marvelous quarterback." "Well, thanks...um-" "Jax. My name's Jax. I'm a sophomore here." The fox interrupts as he extends his paw to me. I smile in slight amusement as I accept the fox's paw and shake it. "Great to meet you Jax. Do you think you could give me my dorm key? I need to get my stuff up to my room." "Oh certainly." Jax replies as he turns around, his russet tail wagging back and forth. He turns back around with a folder in his paws. "Your key is in the folder along with your dorm's floor and room number. If you have any questions, feel free to ask me or any other advisor." I take the folder from the fox with a nod and slight smile. "Well...uh, thanks Jax. I guess I'll see you later then." "Hey, no problem at all. It really is such an honor to meet you Mr. Milensky! I guess I'll see you on the field soon!" Hmmm. Mr. Milensky. I kind of like that. It has a nice ring to it. I flick my paw in farewell as I open the folder. I find out that my dorm is on the second floor, room 22B. There are a total of one hundred rooms on each floor. My shoulders are starting to ache from the weight of my bags, so I follow the map to a flight of stairs. A nice looking female wolf happens to pass me on the stairs and I feel her eyeing me as she passes by. I feel a small smile tugging at my muzzle. If all the girls here are that attractive or better, then I think that going to college here won't be too bad. Hell, it shouldn't be too bad in general. Anyone who wants to play college football would kill to get into Xavier University. To tell the truth, I was actually surprised when they offered me a football scholarship. I knew that I was decent at football, but I had never thought that I would go big in the future, let alone becoming the starting quarterback for one of the best college football teams in history. Just the thought of it causes a sense of uncontained eagerness to flow through my body. The second floor is full of activity as I enter the hallway. I barely have time to dodge an otter as he rushes past me. I glance at my room number again, and then glance at the door closest to me. Shit, my room is at the other end of the hallway. I adjust the grip on my duffel bags and begin to make my way down the crowded hallway. I skirt past a tiger who is busy unpacking several of his own bags and end up running straight into a black panther. "Hey! Watch where-" The panther growls as he turns around, but then stops short as his eyes meet mine. "Whoa, hey...you don't happen to be Kale? Kale...ummm...Misky! Yeah! Kale Misky! Is that your name?" "Milensky. It's Kale Milensky." I reply while trying to hide the irritation out of my voice. All I really want to do is get to my damn room and drop these bags off. "Misky, Milensky, close enough. You're fresh meat pup. Freshman and the starting quarterback? That's pretty impressive. "Glad you've done your research." I reply dryly. "And you are?" "Dev. Dev Kennedy. I play on the defensive line." "I know. I've done my research too. Well it was nice running into you Dev. I guess I'll see you on the field soon?" "Absolutely. Hope you're used to getting crushed though. Just because you're new doesn't mean I'm going to go easy." He flashes a grin and motions towards the door beside him. "Also, my room's right here, just in case if you need anything." "I'll keep that in mind. I guess I'll see you later." I say as I turn around and start walking. Great. I've officially been at college for less than ten minutes and I'm already annoyed. If the rest of the day is going to involve encounters like the last two, I'm going to be pissed. Finally, I make it to my own room without having to stop and talk to someone. I fumble for the key inside the folder and slide it into the lock on the door. I go to turn the key and it ends up getting stuck. I jiggle the key and twist and turn the knob. I'm seriously about to kick the door down when the lock finally turns and the door squeaks open. The first thing that I see is the two beds positioned on each side of the room. A single window allows the golden sunlight to bathe the room in a warm golden glow. At the end of each bed is a small dresser, and a desk is positioned between the two beds. The second thing that catches my eye is the flash of white fur that appears from behind the doorway of the bathroom. The door shuts quietly just as a white fox steps out from the bathroom. He's sported in faded blue jeans and a black polo. His blue eyes shine brilliantly as he studies me from head to paws. The white fox suddenly smiles slyly as he crosses his arms and leans up against the wall. "Well, well. Kale Milensky. What are the chances?" I'm thrown off guard by him knowing my name. Then again, why should I be surprised? The first two guys I met already knew who I was. "I'm sorry?" I reply as I let my bags fall to the floor. "First day of college and it's already off to a great start." The arctic fox replies as he continues smiling. "I was nervous about meeting my new roommate, but I never even thought that my roommate could be the famous Kale Milensky." Shit. This is exactly what I do not want right now. "Yeah well, it's not a big deal." I reply as I roll my aching shoulders. "I don't even know why everyone's making such a big deal about it. It's not like I'm some fucking professional football player or anything." The arctic fox chuckles, showing a perfect set of white teeth. "Oh calm down wolf. I'm not going to be like some crazy fanatic fan of you. And it's not like as if the college threw a welcoming parade for you. Everyone just knows who you are." I relax slightly. "Yeah, well whatever." I reply as I rub the back of my head. "Anyways, you know who I am, but I'm afraid I don't know who you are." "Name's Rhy." The fox replies as he walks over to the window, his white fur shining brilliantly in the sunlight. "So what bed do you want?" I eye the two beds with all the interest of reading a book on molecular chemistry. "Um, I guess I'll just take that one." I say as I motion towards the bed on the right side of the room. "Sorry. I already chose that one." Rhy replies smoothly, a gleam of amusement in his eyes. Damn foxes. Why do they always have to be so clever? "Fine. Whatever." I say as I throw my bags onto the other bed. I don't really give a shit about what bed I get. If he wants to play his little games, fine by me. I'm not going to let this asshole bother me. "Well glad to see you don't have a temper. I would hate to share a room with someone who is always angry." Rhy says as he walks over to me. "Yeah well, don't try me." I mutter as I turn to the door. "I have to go get the rest of my stuff." "You need any help?" Rhy asks. I look at the fox suspiciously, expecting his smug little grin and that sly gleam in his eyes, but I don't see any sign of trickery. There's a different look in his eyes. Is it admiration? Or is it something else? "Uh...yeah sure, I guess." I reply as I open the door. "Great. Lead the way." Rhy replies. I leave the room and hear the quiet padded footsteps of the arctic fox behind me. I guess rooming with Rhy won't be so bad. Sure, he seemed like a total asshole at first, but most foxes are clever like that. You just need to get to know them and not let their cunning tricks get to you. I walk through the campus grounds again towards the parking lot, except this time I have a white arctic fox by my side. I glance over at Rhy and take in his physical appearance. He's thin and nicely toned, with a good amount of muscle on him. He's definitely not a football player, but maybe more of a runner or swimmer, at least in his high school years. He's just a few inches shorter than me though. "What are you staring at?" He asks with a twitch of his ears. I suddenly realize that I've been staring at him while walking. "Oh, um...well...I was just, uh," My mind frantically searches for an excuse. I don't think telling your new roommate that you were examining his physical features is the best start of meeting each other. "I was just um, looking at your shirt. I see it has the Woodland Springs Sharks emblem on it. You're a Woodland Sharks fan?" Rhy smiles slightly. "No, not really. My father is more of a fan than me. I kinda lost hope for them when they went 2-10 last year and then botched their first playoff game the year before that." I have to admit, I could not help looking surprised at Rhy's sudden knowledge of football. Rhy seems to notice and shrugs. "My father taught me everything I need to know about football." He says with a flick of his ears. "My car's over there." I say as I point to my mother's blue sedan. "My parents will probably want to meet you." "Your parents drove you here?" Rhy asks as we approach the vehicle. "Yeah. Didn't your parents drive you here?" Rhy shakes his head. "No. I drove myself." "Oh. So you're not a freshman." "Nope. Sophomore." I'm about to ask Rhy where he lives when I'm suddenly interrupted by my parents. "There you are Kale! And look, you've already made a friend! That's so wonderful!" "Moooooom!" I groan as she runs up to Rhy. "Hello there! My name's Linda! I'm Kale's mother." My mom says excitedly as she offers her paw to Rhy. "My name's Rhy. It's a pleasure to meet you." Rhy replies with a smile as he shakes my mom's paw. "Oh it's so nice to meet you Rhy!" She replies. "Kale? Did you find your room? Is your roommate up there?" "You're talking to my roommate right now mom." I reply as I hoist the last of my belongings out of the back of the car. "Rhy is your roommate? Oh Kale, that's wonderful!" She turns to face Rhy again. "I'm so happy you're his roommate! I hope you don't mind Kale though. He can be very messy sometimes." "Mom!" I protest. "And make sure to keep air fresheners in the room too. He tends to smell pretty awful after football." "Mom!" I can tell Rhy is trying hard not to laugh. "Well you have a very talented son Mrs. Milenski. I've watched several of your son's football games." "Oh hear that Kale? You have a fan!" She shouts excitedly. "Yeah. Him and everyone else here." I mumble under my breath. "Well that's the last of it." My father walks up to me and holds out a paw. "You're on your own now son." He says as he clasps my paw into his and gives it a firm shake. "Work hard and practice hard. I want to see you in the playoffs this year." "I will dad." I reply. My father has never been one to show any kind of emotion. My dad releases my paw. My mom approaches me again, tears already starting to stream down her face. "Oh Kale, please be careful here! We're going to miss you so much!" She sobs as she pulls me in for another hug. "I will mom. I'm going to be fine. I'll call you later." Soon enough, I find myself waving good-bye as my parents pull out of the parking lot and start their long drive back home. As the cars fades out of sight, I take a deep breath and let it out slowly. I'm finally free. "So it's getting close to dinner. You feel like grabbing a bite to eat? I know the best cafeteria here." Rhy's smooth voice snaps me out of my trance. "Uh, yeah sure. Let me throw these bags in my room and we can go." I reply. I rub my stomach and realize that I am pretty hungry. "Food here is pretty decent. Unhealthy at some places, but decent." Rhy states as we begin to walk. We're silent as we walk the rest of the way to the dorms. I unlock the door to our room and throw my bags onto the bed. "Well, let's go get something to eat Rhy." I say. I receive a warm smile from the arctic fox as we start to walk down the hallway.

"So, you have a girlfriend?" The question throws me off guard, and I have to think about my answer as I chew on my chicken sandwich. I look up at Rhy, who is looking at me intently with those deep blue eyes. "Not now, no." I reply as I take a sip of water. "How about you?" "Nah." Rhy replies as he takes a bite of his salad. "I'm not really the type girls are attracted to." "Really? That's surprising." I reply without thinking. I realize my mistake right after I said that. Rhy leans his head against his paw, that sly smile spread across his muzzle that is all too familiar with me now. "What do you mean by that?" He asks smoothly. Shit, why do I never think before I talk? "Well, I mean, you're friendly, and you're an athlete too. Girls go for those kind of guys." Rhy smiles and leans back into his chair. "Was an athlete. Not anymore." He replies with a shrug. "Well, it's kind of you to say that, but unfortunately girls just aren't attracted to me." I continue eating because I'm not so sure how to reply to that. The fox looks like he wants to say something else. He opens his muzzle slightly as if he is going to say something, but he instead exhales and takes a drink from his water bottle. "Something on your mind?" I ask as I wipe my muzzle with a napkin. Rhy shakes his head and smiles. "Nah. I'm fine." He replies. "So what's your major?" I ask him. Rhy's ears perk up. "Theater and literature." "Oh really? So you read a lot?" "Every chance I get. Greek mythology, classics, any book that catches my interest really." "Cool. I wish I could add on, but I haven't really read that many books." "Typical." Rhy replies with a sly grin as he stabs a pile of greens onto his fork and lifts it up to his muzzle. "You football players really don't like books." "Do too." I say with a frown. "I just don't have the time to read." Rhy chuckles and holds up his paws. "I'm just kidding Kale. I'm sure you have read a few books." He grins. "Comic books don't count." I find myself returning the fox's grin. "Well, we have a few hours before the sun sets. You want me to show you around the campus?" Rhy asks. "Yeah of course." I reply as I stand up and stretch. Rhy smiles and starts to walk towards the exit, his white tail flowing majestically behind him. I follow the arctic fox outside into the evening light. He's not such a smartass after all.

We end up returning to our dorm around eleven at night. My damn key still won't open the door right, but luckily Rhy's key works perfectly. "I'm freakin' tired man." I say as I collapse onto my bed. "Today was fun though." "I had fun too." Rhy replies as he sits on his bed. "Too bad we start classes tomorrow though." "I dunno, I'm pretty excited." I reply as I turn my head to face the fox. "Well of course you are. You just have a few classes. Then you get to go and play football for the rest of the day." "Hey. Football is hard too." I protest as I sit up. "I have to run around outside in hot weather with all those pads on." "So you get a little hot. Whoop de doo. Which would you rather do, play football for a few hours or sit through lectures on Old Era novels?" My ears twitch as I think about it. "I think I'll stick with football." Rhy chuckles as he stands up. "I thought so. I'm gonna take a quick shower." Before I have time to reply, the fox slips his shirt off, revealing his furry white chest. He has a nice chest, nice abs- What the fuck am I thinking? I shake my head and avert my gaze to the other side of the room. Did I really just think that? I glance over at the fox and watch him rummage through one of his duffel bags for a towel and a bar of soap. "Don't use up all of the hot water." I tease, hoping he does not notice the nervousness in my voice. Rhy grins and sticks his tongue out at me as he closes the bathroom door. I let out a sigh as I rest my elbows on my knees and let my head hang. Way to go on thinking like a faggot Kale. I recline back onto my bed and close my eyes as I try to relax. I hear the water turn on in the bathroom. I close my eyes and think about the one female wolf that I had passed by on the stairs. I think about the feel of her soft paws against a certain part of my body, and I feel my sheath expand rapidly. I sigh and sit up. Maybe I'll take a shower once Rhy is done. My mind keeps replaying the image of the fox undressing and I feel like I'm going insane. I like girls, dammit. I don't find Rhy attractive at all, it's just...well...he's just a good friend. It's not like as if I want to date the fox. Then again...what if the fox wants to date me? I laugh slightly to myself as I sit up again. That's ridiculous. But then I remember our conversation over dinner today. The fox had never said that he had a girlfriend, and he didn't seem that interested in getting one either. Was it because he just thought that he wasn't attractive enough to get a girlfriend, or was it because he's not interested in girls but he's interested in guys? I growl to myself as I stand up and start pacing. The fox was pretty friendly, maybe a little bit too friendly. I suddenly stop walking. Oh man, what if he has a crush on me? All those sly smiles and sideways glances he gave me, and that explains why he was so friendly to me. But then again... I sit back down on my bed. This is getting crazy. Rhy didn't make a move on me yet. It wasn't like as if he tried to ask me out or anything. Maybe he's just a lonely fox looking for a friend. I recline back onto my bed again. And here I am all fucking paranoid over a guy who I think is gay. He probably isn't, and I'm just making a huge fucking deal over it. Well fuck it. I'm not gonna give it another thought. I'm about to close my eyes when the bathroom door squeaks open. "Shower's open." Rhy says as he steps into the room with nothing but a towel wrapped around his toned hips. "Awesome." I reply as I stand up and start rummaging through my bag for a clean pair of shorts. "Hey, do you happen to have an extra brush or something? I don't have one and I don't want my fur to be all crazy tomorrow morning." Rhy asks as he sits down on the bed. "Uh, yeah sure." I say as I reach into my duffel bag again and grab my brush. I chuck it over to the fox who catches it in one of his snowy white paws. "You can have that one. I have an extra." The fox looks at me with a slight gleam in his eyes. "Really?" He asks as he stands up. "Yeah sure. I don't need it." I reply as I try to avert my gaze from the fox's naked body. "Oh okay. Well thanks." Rhy replies as he starts brushing his slightly damp fur. I stand up and quickly make my way to the bathroom. I slip out of my shorts and shirt and turn the water on. I don't have to wait very long for the water to turn warm. I inhale deeply, taking the slight scent of Rhy's musk in over the soapy smell of shampoo. I try to take my mind off of the white fox as I step into the warm soothing water. I sigh in relief as the hot water pours over my body and into my fur. My legs are killing me for some reason. Tomorrow is my first day of football, so I bet that my entire body will be killing me tomorrow. I squeeze some shampoo from the bottle in the shower and lather up my fur. I suddenly realize that I'm using Rhy's shampoo. Great, now I'm going to smell like him too. Frustrated, I wash all of the shampoo out of my fur and turn the water off. I quickly dry myself off to the point where I'm not dripping water, and I slip on a clean pair of briefs and shorts. I step out of the bathroom shirtless. Rhy peeks up from the book he is reading on his bed. "You look refreshed." He comments as his deep blue eyes gleam brilliantly. I give him a small smile as I sit on the edge of my bed. Rhy sets his book down and starts sniffing the air. "Did you use my shampoo?" He asks. "Huh? Oh yeah, I did. Sorry about that." I reply. "Nah it's fine." Rhy replies with a slight grin. "You smell...good." I feel my heart drop at that comment. That sounds like something a gay guy would say. "Thanks." I reply with a forced smile. Rhy props his head up against his paw as he watches me stand up and grab my pillow and sheets from one of my bags. My heart starts to beat faster and I suddenly start to feel hot. "So what time do you want to wake up tomorrow morning?" He asks casually. "Well, my first class doesn't start until eight, so I guess seven if that's cool with you." "That's perfect. My first class starts at eight too." Rhy replies as he sets his alarm. "Well I'm gonna get some sleep now. I don't want to be falling asleep in my first class tomorrow." "Yeah. Me neither." I reply with a slight chuckle as I throw back the sheets on my bed and climb in. Rhy turns the lights out and soon we're in complete darkness. For several minutes, I just lie there, listening to Rhy's steady breathing. I glance at my cell phone. The display currently reads one in the morning. I'm about to drift off to sleep when Rhy's voice suddenly jolts me awake. "Hey Kale? You asleep?" Rhy whispers. "Not yet." I whisper back. "I just want to let you know...I had a great time with you today. I'm glad you're my roommate, even though you seem like a dumb jock sometimes. "Thanks man. I had a really fun time too." I reply with a smile. "Well...I guess I'll see you tomorrow morning. Goodnight." Rhy whispers back. "Goodnight man." I reply as I roll over. I still have this warm feeling as I lie there. I'm not exactly sure what Rhy is playing at, or why I'm being paranoid over something that is unlikely. I mean, if he was gay, wouldn't he be wearing bright colors with a flaming personality and flamboyant attitude? I still feel a mixture of confused emotions though. I lie back down and close my eyes. I guess I'll just worry about it tomorrow. I drift off to sleep to the sound of Rhy's breathing.
