The Deep
Chapter 4 of guardians of the universe
Futuristicdragonman: Ahhh love, gots the good times, the hard times, the bitchy times, and through it all, it's impossible not to give a fuck.
James woke up feeling the effects of a massive hangover. He clutched his head due to the massive headache he is feeling. Noticing Kate and Syrris where gone, he stood up looking around for them, while ignoring the headache and body aches due to his hangover. On the south-west side of the large room, he noticed a small woman sitting with a small sack, and some sort of board with many markings resembling runes or possibly sigils of some sort. In his curiosity, James approached the woman. "I am Gillie, the high priestess of Calgora. You must be James. Kate and Syrris told me much about you. It's not a common thing for dragons to be so fond of humans" the woman said speaking in common tongue. "Heard that one before. Ummm, what do you wish to speak with me about if you don't mind my asking"? "I am here to help you. While your weapons are advanced, in hand to hand combat they will serve little purpose to you. You need a good blade, James. however, I must ask of you. How does a mortal man combat hell itself without magic? I cannot say I've ever heard of a human killing not even one demon without it. When a demon takes physical form, no blade is strong enough to pierce their skin".
"Bombs and large automatic cannons from our gun ships seems to do the trick. However, the demons are of least concern. It's the hell hounds or at least thats what I call them. Don't get rid of the demons and close a portal before they come, the battle will be lost. And finally, if the leader of hell's legions arrives, he devours all life on a world". James Answering Gillie's question
"And you know this because you seen it?" Gillie asked.
"Yes, and its not a good sight to see. If this evil cannot be stopped, not only will this world would fall. The more worlds hell's leader devours, the stronger he becomes. He uses the energy of every living being to gain strength. And if he was to become strong enough, life in this world and every world in existence will perish. My world will suffer the same fate as the others if this evil is not suppressed. The gods are nothing but children with an ant farm. They won't help us, which is why I also question their existence. All I know is by all means necessary it must be stopped".
"That seems logical to me, James. True faith in any spiritual practice is something not all can find. However, I had to ask because I'm going to enchant a sword for you to weild yet I had suspicions which is why i must know why you where here". An old drarven man gave a sword to the high priestess. She thanked him, speaking in dwarven. The priestess pulled out a crystal of some sort, along with other stones with some sort of runes out of the sack. Speaking in a language james did not understand, flames swirled around the clear crystal, then the flames disapped turning the crystal red. Then she placed the crystal on the hilt of the sword and a bright flash appeared. The crystal vanished and was absorbed into the sword. "It is done", the priestess said. She handed the sword to James. Curiously James examined the sword noticing how little it weighed for being such a long sword. "Every blade that is crafted here is meant to fit the size of it's wielder. Traditionally, any enchanted blade has a name. However, I'll leave it up to you to name it. Fare well, and good luck James. Also, stay close to Kate and Seleen. Theyare true friends of yours.
The priestess stood up and left James's quarters. Further fascinated by the blade in his hands, he decided to swing it around, yet combat with a sword is far much different than the combat he is used to. About 15 minutes latter, James went to his back pack to get something to eat, but then he noticed the two dragons walking back in the room.
"After your breakfast, I need a human for a snack James"! Syrris said.
"Yah, pick on the human huh. Guess thats the way it goes. But you forgot the fact being eaten is something I enjoy. So I don't mind. Besides, I'm still hung over from drinking too much mead. I can use a nice soft stomach to continue sleeping it off. Also, we need to get going soon. I trust that you two know where we need to go next". James said.
Kate nodded, "we need to go into what the dwarves call The Deep. "It's a very dangerous place even for dragons".
Syrris spoke and interrupting Kate. It's suicidal for humans to go into. Which further explains why I'm gonna eat you. You'll die for sure if you go in without being in our bellies".
"Awww, Syrris does care for me, how cute... I could just give you a big wet kiss for that," James said in a sarcastic tone.
"Or you can fill me up with your flesh!" Syrris said.
And without warning, she clamped her jaws around James, pushed him deeper into her mouth, and swallowed him.
"There! That made the big mouth fucker shut up..." Syrris said.
Kate chuckled. "So he is growing on you too".
"Of course he is, Kate. It isn't every day you come across willing prey".Syrris said.
"True to that. Lets get going, I'll get James's pack and we'll start moving into the deep", Kate said.
As the trio made their way for the deep, James took the opportunity to get some rest while he was in Syrris's storage stomach. That way his hangover will hopefully be gone if he has to fight. The two dragons made it to the deep's entrance. Their heart beats speed up a little due to them not truly knowing what dangers lie in the tunnels leading so far into the mountain range. They marched forward into the deep, noticing the tunnel was lit with torches.
"Hey Syrris, we are not the only ones here. Someone or something lives near by". Kate said.
Syrris nods in agreement. As the two keep on walking, arrows began to rain down on the two dragons. This caused them great annoyance.
"Where are the little bastards coming from"!?!? Kate screamed as she shielded her eyes.
"Orcs, lots of them it looks like, Syrris replying to Kate.
With a quick flame from both dragons, scores of orcs burned to their death. Several hundreds more came charging at them with primitive poorly crafted swords. Many crawling on top of Kate and Syrris. The two sent out more flames at them, throwing more orcs off of themselves, stepping on them, hitting them with their tail, and they still kept coming. Fortunately for Kate and Syrris, the primitive blades the orcs wield cannot penetrate their scales. Inside Syrris, James woke up. Noticing the dragons where in a fight, James tried to stand up, but the stomach walls are too slippery due to the fact of saliva and mucus align the walls and James just slipped.
"What the fuck is going on out there Syrris!" James screamed.
"Orcs! Lots of them as well", Syrris replied.
"Syrris, let me out!" James said as he pulled out his handgun.
"No way little guy. There is far too many around for you to take".
"Kate can give me my machine gun. I'll hose them down"!
"Ok, it's you're choice, I highly recommend you stay there though..."
Syrris let out another flame killing several hundred more orcs, giving her enough time to spit up James. James felt the stomach contract, then he was pushed into her throat. Seconds latter he fell into Syrris's palm. "Kate! Give me my bag!" James said. Seeing James was unprotected by Syrris's stomach, she did so without hesitation. She tossed the large pack to James.
"James, if you die may the gods have mercy on you because I will not!" Kate yellled.
"As if that made any sense!" James yelled back as he took his machine gun, pulled the bolt back, then releasing it, which forced the first round in the firing chamber.
With him now being in the fight, he held down the trigger and fired at the legion of orcs. Some orcs crawled on Syrris's back. James saw them. He climbed on Syrris's neck and started gunning them down within minutes James Killed a hundred of them but they just kept coming. His gun suddenly stopped firing.
"Shit! I'm out!" Not having the time to reload, James retreated to the top of Syrris's head. As the orcs kept coming for James, he pulled out his handgun and started shooting at them again. One orc took a swing at James. The tip of the blade missing his throat my mere inches as he flinched back. James drew his sword, and started fighting them with it. This is the first time he wielded a sword in combat. James managed to kill several more orcs. But realized he was in way over his head. But as soon as he realized it, his realization came moments to late. An arrow struck him in the shoulder knocking him off of Syrris. James fell about 30 feet before hitting the ground. He screamed in agony as he felt his ribs break from the impact. Even with his body armor, it did not save him from such injuries. Several orcs picked him up and carried him.
"Kate! Syrris! Help me!" Syrris was so focused on the fight she didn't hear James. Yet Kate did. She leaped towards the orcs that carried James. By sheer luck she managed to grab both James and the orcs when the orcs where only a few feet from a hole in the cave walls. She used her claws from her free hand and impaled the orcs. Kate gave James a very pissed off look, then swallowed him. Moments latter, James landed in her storage stomach realizing the foolish move he made. A few hours passed, the orcs retreated back into the depths of the cave walls.
"Thats right! Run you cowardly bastards!" Syrris screamed.
Then she noticed something wrong. She didn't feel James crawling on her neck, nor her back. "James! Where are you!", Syrris screamed.
Kate spit up James, with once again an angered expression on her face. She reached for the arrow lodged in James's shoulder.
"No! wait!" James screamed. But Kate ignored him and pulled the arrow out.
"Ouch! Shit that hurt"! James yelled in pain. But Kate preformed a healing spell on James, his ribbs where like new again as well. Unable to believe what he has witnessed, he started to rub the wound on his shoulder blade, and the two broken ribbs. But then reality came back to him knowing he just pissed off Kate.
"What the hell James! Do you got a death wish?" Tears became visible in her eyes as she continued scolding him. "What if I wasn't quick enough to save you? Or if I wasn't able to hear your cry for help? You'd be eaten by orcs. And they are merciless. They'd cook you alive, maybe even torture you before cooking you. When Syrris and I tell you leave the fighting to us you need to do just that! I don't want to loose you!" Kate said.
A shocked look fell on Jame's face. "Wait, was the last part again"?
"Leave the fighting to Syrris and I!" Kate screamed in anger. "No, the last part". James said.
"We need you to help us identify the object we are looking for, James." Kate once again avoiding what she previously said.
"You forget Kate, fighting is the only thing I do, its the only thing I know. I've lived by the gun sense I was a boy, I'll die with one in my hand as well. What do you think you are? My mother?" James said.
Kate paused a second realizing she doesn't have any authority over James. But she just shook her head as James's words further angered her.
"Ugh I swear human, you do a stunt like that again and you're dead! If orcs or anything else doesn't kill you, I!... I... ummm..." Kate refreigning herself from sayin the last part of what she wanted to say. James was shocked to see Kate so mad at him, it even hurt a little. But James will not show such a feeling to a dragon who just made a potential threat. So, he just played as a hard ass once more.
"Or you'll what Kate? Kill me? Go ahead... And I have a name, you can say it instead of calling me human". James said as his blue eyes filled with bloodlust and taking a defensive stance and readying his weapon, feeling threatened by a dragon, James was taking no chances.
Syrris walked between James and Kate, seeing James not giving in, she knew it could escalate into a fight. And if it did, it'd be one James wouldn't win.
"Alright you two, whats done is in the past already. And I'm not letting you two fight each other now. If you two want to do so after this whole thing is over, fine by me. Until then, You two need to get along!"
Syrris looked at James, picked him up, and said "I need to separate you two for a while. Lets get going".
She set James on the top of her neck, and the trio kept moving on. Syrris, James, and Kate kept marching deeper into the mountain side. It's been about two hours, Syrris noticed James and Kate would not talk to eachother. Sometimes Kate would look at James, but James would not return even a glance at her. He just held his gun, and kept looking forward into the tunnel. Kate wanted to read his mind, But she sensed what James was thinking was a personal matter. And she's always been one who doesn't like being nosy. Except for Syrris who has been reading his mind this entire time that is. The three entered in a small room, noticing large stone doors. The three examined the door, the room they are in appears that no one has been here in thousands of years.
"This is anancient dwarven script of some sort. But the ancient language is beyond my knowledge". Kate said.
James grabbed Syrris's hair and asked her to lower him to the ground. Syrris did, James landed from her neck to the ground. And he Pulled out the sword that was enchanted for him by the dwarves.
"Syrris, how do you cast a spell to set a sword on fire?" James asked.
"Magic involving the elements is Kate's thing. Not mine..." Syrris said."
James just gave a loud sigh, as he began digging through his pack. He pulled out a flare, lit it, and walked into a tunnel in the side of the door way, trying to avoid a conversation with Kate, who easily caught on to what James was thinking. The small tunnel was only large enough for a human to enter.
"Looks like it leads somewhere! I'm going to check it out!. James shouted.
"Be careful James, I do not want to loose my little human prey to orcs!" Syrris said in a joking tone.
"Haha! Very funny Syrris. But i'm really not in a joking mood right now", James shouted back. Adding to what he said, "looks like I'll be out of sight for a while. Don't panic if it takes me a while to figure this shit out".
Syrris noticed Kate had a depressed look on her face, and said "whats wrong Kate"?
"It's James, he's been giving me the silent treatment. He's completely ignoring me".
"Well a while back, you where harsh with him. Not to mention the last few words sounded like a threat. It even hurt James to hear something sounding like a threat coming from you. Especially sense he loves you. Even as tough as James may seem, he can still be hurt with words. He just conceals pain with anger. No human is tough enough not to feel emotion, Kate. And that defensive stance he took, holding his gun the way he did, he certainly took what you said as a threat. It'd take allot for him to trust you again. He's been betrayed by one he loved once before, and I gotta admit, it was something that made me feel sorry for the little guy. And because of this, it makes it that much more difficult for you getting him to trust you. You'd know and understand him more if you where just a little more nosy in reading his personal thoughts." Syrris said to Kate.
"Maybe youre right, Syrris. Guess reading his mind is the only way of understanding him. I just never felt it was right to be nosy." Kate said.
Their conversation ended as James returned, with a confused expression. Both dragons stared at him, wondering whats going on.
"Did you find a way to open these doors, James?" Kate asked. "No, but I did meet a statue of a creature that closely resembled of a gryphon. He told me not to return without one of native blood. Whatever that means. He also said only native blood can open the door. I'm assuming only someone of a near by tribe, or maybe a dwarf can open it. But that sounds too easy. There may be something else we are missing. Easpecially sense all of the nearby script is dwarven".
"Damn it! Syrris screamed in frustration. "Well, looks like we can question the dwarves about this. Or we can go back to the council and ask one to come with us. Who in the council is the best problem solver?" James asked. " Out of all the dragons, Selein is the best. She's young, but a very critical thinker and problem solver. Not to mention she has studied many ancient languages. Drarven tongue has changed over thousands of years., but she may be able to read it. But that tunnel is too big for any dragon to fit. Our best bet is to go back to Calgora." Kate said.
"The day is almost up, we should make our way back to Calgora. We'll spend the night there, then try to find someone to help us out." Syrris said. James and Kate agreed to Syrris's suggestion, then the trio made their way back to Calgora.
When they arrived, they rest in the same quarters they did before. Kate tried to start making amends with James.
"Ummm, sory about the threat I made at you James. I didn't mean what I wanted to say to be so threatening. Cearly I overreacted, I just don't want to see you die." Kate said.
James turned his head for a moment looking away from Kate. Then said "Sorry, a sighn of weakness. We all have a time Kate, every day I can almost feel mine comming closer and closer. Truth is, there is no stoppong my time from comming. If I'm meant to die, you cannot stop it, just as I cannot stop your time from comming.
"Well, I suppose I can't argue with that fact James". However, is sorry considered a weakness when it's directed at someone you consider a friend?" Kate asked
James smirked at Kate's question, then said, "I asked the one who trained me in combat that question. All he did was laugh, then he walked away. Yet I never recieved an actual answer from him. My guess is that was his way of saying no, Its not a weakness. So in that sense, I think its perfectly acceptable for me to forgive you, and I'm sorry too. I should have listened to you and Syrris."
Kate smiled, walked up to James, placed a wing over him, then began nuzzling him with the tip of her snout. Moments latter, Kate gave James a friendly offer.
"Hey James, want to sleep in my mouth tonight?" James nonned his head up and down, Kate opened her mouth saying "AAAWWWW". James crawled in, and gladly laying on Kate's soft warm tongue. The comfort of her warm mouth quickly caused James to fall asleep.
