A fighter screams through a debris field being chased by a bounty-hunter gunship, with his wingman gone, he was all alone and he knew it. Heavy auto-cannon fire swept past him as he threw his fighter around chunks of debris.

Suddenly his ship lurched and shuddered 'I've been hit' he thought, his ship pitched down towards several large chunks of debris. He pulled on the flight controls with all his might, but the ship failed to respond and slammed into the debris.

Laura had waited hours for the hunters to leave so she could begin searching for salvageable components from their kills.

The first wreck was blasted all to hell and yielded nothing she hoped the other would have something, as she approached she could see that the nose was crushed inwards and port wing and a good portion of the portside engine housing had been ripped away but the starboard wing was intact and had missile pods on it.

'Score' she thought 'I just hope there are some missiles left in those pods' she lined up the wreck, suddenly the wreck's starboard wing-tip thrusters fired 'what the hell' she thought 'must be a computer malfunction' she scanned the wreck and got a weak life-form reading 'the pilot's still alive' she fired her grapple at the wreck, it hit but the wreck pulled away, forcing her to release it

"I'm helping you" she said hoping the wreck's pilot could hear her. The wreck cut its thrusters, she fired again, the grappling-hook hit behind the cockpit and she started towing the wreck her father's trading station.

As she approached her father's base, she slowed her ship and let the wreck drift into the flight deck, it floated closely over a landing pad, the magnetic locks were engaged pulling it down onto the pad, Laura disengaged her grapple and landed next to it, the pad descended down into the station,

A medical team was waiting in the hanger for them, the wreck's canopy was cut off and the pilot was rushed away, Laura could see his upper body and head were a bloody, furry mess.

She went over to his ship and looked in the cockpit, the front consoles was shredded, blown outward "they must have exploded in his face" she said quietly

"You know you can't bring your kills back with you but I should congratulate you for capturing a hybrid single-handedly" a voice behind her said, her 6 foot 1 father dwarfed his 5 foot 4 daughter

"I know father but he's not my kill" she replied "I found him".

Laura stood in her father's office "you went in after some hunters had been there" her father David said sitting down at the table,

"Yes" Laura replied standing front of the table

"Do you know how dangerous that was, they could have come back for this hybrid" her father said

"I know but I was just there to salvage stuff" Laura said "not to rescue him".

Down in the med-lab the doctors and nurses worked to patch up the hybrid, his wounds were packed with liquid, tiny crystals and micro-circuitry, his helmet didn't protect his head but the visor did it job protecting his eyes from flying debris. The nurses cleaned the blood off his face, they noting three vertical lines running down his furry cheek where fur was missing, like claw marks.

The hybrid would survive now that all his wounds were healed and they even removed the scars on his face, he was more handsome then before.

A nurse went back to write her report, in the other room the hybrid awoke, touching his face, realised his scars had been removed, he spotted a laser scalpel on a nearby table, he pick it up and a dermal regenerator, then quietly walked to the bathroom, looking in the mirror 'they covered my scars' he thought, he raised the scalpel and started to replace the 'scars' exactly as they were before.

The doctor walked in to check on the hybrid and found the bed; empty, "nurse, nurse!" the doctor called, the nurse came running "where's the hybrid" he asked,

She shook her head; he heard a sound coming from the bathroom, peeking in as the smiling hybrid finished 'regenerating' his last scar,

The hybrid looked around "now what" the hybrid said as he saw the doctor with security officers behind him walk into the bathroom.

he reached behind his back for his weapon, his hand closed around nothing 'shit, they got my weapons' he though, he rushed the guards, one raised a thick black weapon and fired, the shock dart hit home and the hybrid was unconscious in seconds

"You could have just scrambled his brain" the doctor said to the guards, both shrugged and left.

Hours later he came to and found he was behind a force field, he looked at his hand, only to discover it was covered with light grey fur, his whole body was covered in patchy grey fur with white spots, he had a tail and pointed cat's ears, the nurse came over

"Can you hear me" she asked, he just pushed on the force field, pain shot through his palms "relax, everything is alright" she said.

A man walked in, looked at him "is he stable" the man asked the doctor

"Yes, he just woke up and it will still be a shock to his systems" the doctor replied

"I don't care, take him to the brig," the man said to the guard "we have reason to believe he is someone's prey",

"I can't confirm or deny that yet but he was hit by a shock dart, I'd like to observe him more here, his cerebral cortex has been disrupted" the doctor said just as the guard lowered the field,

The hybrid backed away, the guard grabbed his arm, hurting him, the hybrid lashed out with a knee catching the guard right between the legs, pushed the guard aside as he ran for the door, the whole event was over in moments, one second the guard grabbed him, the next the hybrid was running out the door

"Security alert!" the man yelled.

Laura heard the alert, she was in the market area and ran to her father's office, in the corridor the hybrid ran hard, pushing people out of his way, Laura ran up the same corridor,

The pair collided, the hybrid was dazed, Laura was knocked out cold, the hybrid went to run but found he couldn't leave her behind; he put her over his shoulders and ran down the corridor.

Laura awoke to the feeling of a damp cloth being pressed against her head, then she saw his furry cat-like face "thank you" she said, he just bowed his head "you can understand me" she asked, he nodded

"Yes" he said but was unsure what he said

"Are you alright" she asked him

"Shock dart" was all he said

'They shot him with a shock dart' she thought 'that would take days to wear off' suddenly he spun as security came racing through the door, he ducked behind her clearly terrified, his tail wrapping around her leg

"Stand aside" one guard said

"No" she replied

"Very well, take them both" the guard said as the other guards approached the pair.

Laura look out of the cell at the guards outside, she sat on the bed against the wall, the hybrid sat in the opposite corner of the brig on the floor, knees up to his chest

"What your name" she asked him, he looked at her, thought hard

"I don't know" he said

"I'm Laura" she said "how did you get this way",

His hand ran down his face tracing the bridge of his nose "I don't know" he replied "but I remember someone saying I was hit by a shock dart, my cerebral cortex was been disrupted, whatever that means"

Laura smiled and looked outside again. The door open revealing her father 'oh boy here we go' she thought, her father approached the force field

"What is he doing in there with my daughter" he said to the guard, the guard shrugged "Laura, I been worried sick, did he hurt you" he said

"No dad" she replied

Her father lowered the force field "come on lets go" he said she got up and walk to the threshold and stopped, looked at her 'new' friend

"Can he come too" she asked

"No, that would be inappropriate, he's a hybrid" he replied,

"I'm not leave without him, he's my friend" she said turning around and sitting back down

"Fine, but I want him in handcuffs" her father said "and a guard will escort you pair everywhere you go",

"I don't need a babysitter" Laura protested "I can defend myself if need be".

Laura took her friend to the med-lab to find out who he was "ah, welcome back my young friend" the doctor said then looked at Laura "I see you've made a friend",

"Please call me Lynx" the hybrid replied

"Lynx eh, so you got some memory back" the doctor asked

"A little bit, I keep hearing people saying Lynx in my head, I think it's my name" the hybrid replied

"Well according to the computer that is your nickname or call sign, that all I have at the moment, the rest of your file is classified, you are a pilot" the doctor said

"Can you take these off" Lynx asked holding up his furry wrists revealing the handcuffs

"I think so" Laura said as she worked on the cuffs with a laser scalpel, burning out the locks.

"Thank you, Laura" Lynx said,

"You're welcome" she replied "dad said you are a hybrid, what's a hybrid" she asked

"A hybrid is one species mating with a different species to create a new mixed species" the doctor said "I see, it would explain your father reaction to him" the doctor replied

"So what do we do now" Laura said looking at Lynx

"Well he needs a place to stay until his mind fixes itself, he can't stay here forever" the doctor said "I'll talk to your father about housing him",

"A difficult task" Laura said, the doctor just nodded.

"Fox" Lynx said

"Fox?" Laura asked

"Yeah, she a err," Lynx thought for a second "hybrid, her father is human, her mother is, what is it, a red fox, she was born as a fox"

"You mean she was born as a vixen" the doctor nodded

"Yeah, probability how I got these" Lynx said running a finger over his scars under his fur.

Lynx looked at his fore-arm, 'what happened to my PDA' Lynx thought 'probably still on the ship'

"What happened to you" Laura said

"I don't know can I see my ship, please" Lynx asked

"Why?" Laura asked

"I would like to see the flight recorder" Lynx replied

"So you can find out who attacked you" Laura said

"Yes" Lynx said

"Ok" Laura said and they walk to the hanger bay.

Lynx just stared at the wreckage that had once been his ship, he walked up to the nose 'poor baby' he thought, he ran his fingers along the craft's nose towards the cockpit, when he reached the cockpit he looked inside, reaching in he found what he was looking for, he pulled out his PDA and slipped it into his pocket.

"WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE" a voice boom, Laura and Lynx both turned to see who was yelling, it was Laura's father David, Lynx immediately knew they were going to be taken back to the brig.

Back in the brig "I've told many times not to go to the hanger bay, it's a dangerous place" her father said

"I know dad, I'm sorry" Laura said looking at the floor,

"You will stay here for a few minutes as punishment" her father said

"I can accept that" she said and he walked away.

Lynx pulled out and powered up the PDA and it displayed a 'hello Lynx' message, he hit a button labelled 'host repair', he felt a medium sting as the nanites were released into his blood stream

"What's that" Laura asked

"It's my personal data assistant" Lynx said

"It looks like an over-sized wrist watch" Laura said,

"It's like a personal computer, neural network, communications, all my maps, stations I've been to, best places to buy and sell stuff, I can even hack into other computers" Lynx said as he enable the holographic display showing a sector map "I was attacked here" Lynx said pointing to a area of grey colour

"Yep" Laura said,

Lynx's PDA beeped 'incoming signal' flashed twice then the face of a vixen appeared

"Lynx are you alright, we lost you when they chased you into the debris field, have you been captured" the vixen asked

"No but I'm in a brig somewhere, I don't know where" Lynx said, the vixen looked off screen

"We've got you pinpointed and we will be standing by, oh by the way I like seeing you in your fur" the vixen said and the transmission ended,

Lynx looked down and blushed.

"You weren't lying, she is a fox I mean vixen" Laura said

Lynx's ears were flat against his head, he could feel the nanites fixing his damaged cerebral cortex and slowly memories and other data came flooding back to him

"What did she mean standing by"?

"She's waiting for you to transfer me to a ship to take me away to a prison station somewhere then she will attack, board the ship and rescue me" Lynx said standing "are those guard still outside" Lynx asked,

Laura looked "no" she replied

"Good" Lynx said and hit a button on his PDA, the field flickered and then dropped then activated again

"How" Laura asked surprised

"A PDA has many great features, like the ability to hack just about anything" Lynx stated,

The guards walked in "you are free to go" he said to Laura

"What will happen to him" she asked the guard

"He will stay here" the guard said,

Laura went over to Lynx "I'll be leaving in twenty minutes" she whispered

"I'll be there" he whispered back,

He shook her hand and she left.

Eighteen minutes later, 'where is he' she thought "hey, we have some cargo for you" a cargo hauler yelled

"What cargo?" she yelled back

"Three containers of hellfire missiles off that wreck" the hauler yelled pointing to Lynx's wrecked ship "and some other cargo your father wants you to take home with you"

"Ok loaded them" she yelled back.

All the containers were loaded, still no sign of Lynx, her ship was pushed to an available lift and she waited to be raised to the flight deck.

"SECURTY BREACH" the PA blared, the overhead lighting changed to a light shade of rolling red
