Lynx walked to Laura's room, he walked through the door, Laura wasn't in her bed, Lynx looked around, Laura dropped on him, he reached behind him pulled her off him and threw her across the floor near the bed, Lynx saw her fur was tan coloured with round, black spots, fine and short. Black 'tear marks' ran from her eyes down the sides of her nose to her mouth
"Laura?" Lynx said, she got back on her feet and charged at him covering the distance in a millisecond, knocking Lynx back a few steps, she nuzzled his neck
"Laura" Lynx repeated
"What" she replied "this is kind of cool, I have fur, and how did they do this".
"You were given a cheetah's heart and lungs, some DNA manipulation and here you are, an inch taller too" Lynx said
"Wow," she said inspecting her hands then pulling her tail around, running the fingers along it "look, about what happened at home" she began to say, Lynx placed a single finger on her lips
"Shh, you did what you thought was right, now if you feel up to it, we'll get you some lunch" Lynx said looking her up and down
"That would be great" Laura said noticed he was staring at her "what?"
"Well you may want to get some clothes on, if you want to come outside" Lynx said with grin on his face,
Laura looked down and realised she was naked, she covered herself with her hands, Lynx walked over to the closet, pulled out a tan coloured jumpsuit, walked back over to her and handed it to her "thanks" she said,
"You should know, Fox did a response test on me once, I ran outside wearing nothing but my fur" he said, she giggled,
He slowly drew her close and kissed her, the jumpsuit slip from her fingers landing on the floor, he broke the kiss "you know you're still naked" he whispered to her
"I don't care" she whispered back, giving him a quick kiss then laid her head on his shoulder, listening to his heartbeat.
On the firing range, Fox gave her trusty desert eagles a work-out, her accuracy was 9.0 last time, today it was worst just a lousy 7.2 'concentrate, girl' she told herself as she reloaded both guns, Lynx and Laura walked in "hey, how are you shooting" Lynx called out to her
"Lousy, 7's" she called back "what are you doing here",
"Just showing Laura around" he said as they walk over to her
"Can she shoot" Fox said
"Yes" Laura said, Fox handed her a desert eagle and showed her where, Laura pointed the gun at the target and fired, Laura was knocked off her feet by the recoil, Fox laughed,
Lynx just shook his head and quick-drew one of his colt .45s without even looking at the target, he fired, a perfect head shot.
Fox's jaw hit the ground, Lynx emptied the rest of the clip into the target, Laura got to her feet and looked at the target, a perfect 10, 'Lynx must be very good' she thought
"I've been here for almost an hour and couldn't hit even an 8, you walk in and hit a perfect 10 and you know you're making me look bad in front of her" Fox said,
Lynx just chuckled as he reloaded his weapon and handed it to Laura, she stood in the same place as before but this time Lynx was behind her supporting her, she fired and got in the 6 zone
"Very good" Lynx said taking the gun off her and flicked the safety on then placing it back in his holster
"Do your parents have guns" Lynx asked
"The trade station has a firing range but I'm not allowed in there" Laura replied
"Next time you see your father asked to enrol you in some fire-arms training classes, after what happened, he'll think about it but he probably wouldn't say no" Lynx said
"Ok" she said
After days of jumping and hand-to-hand combat lessons, intense fire-arms training, she could now use hand guns, sub-machine guns, and assault rifles with several good scores, now after several hours in the gym she was exhausted, she collapsed on to her bed, her whole body was sore but she fell asleep in seconds.
Her dreams turned to nightmares as she saw six bounty hunters break down her door, they grabbed her, dragged her out the door and down the corridor, she screamed for help, a hunter slapped her hard across the face, she saw stars when her vision cleared she saw no one coming to her aid, when she look up ahead she saw Fox and Lynx hanging upside down from some pipes overhead, guns in hand, waiting for the hunters to pass,
One hunter saw them and opened fire then received a bullet in the eye from Fox, Lynx dropped to the ground, firing as he raced to save Laura but was gunned down a metre from her, Laura screamed.
She bolted upright, breathing heavily; her door burst open revealing Lynx and Fox with guns drawn, "clear" Lynx called out
"I'll check the adjacent rooms" Fox said then rushed away
"You ok" Lynx asked Laura
"Just bad dreams" Laura replied,
Lynx smiled as he holstered his weapon
"I didn't mean to cause a security alert" Laura said as she started crying, Lynx sat on the bed next to her
"Don't fret, we were overdue for a test anyway" he said, she latched on to him and she cried on his shoulder "it's alright, you're safe now, nothing can hurt you" he said giving her a reassuring hug and rub on the back.
Fox returned, "We found no signs of intruders" Fox said
"It's ok, she just had a bad dream" Lynx said still holding her, Fox smiled and nodded, turning to some people outside
"Everyone back to your stations, great response time" she said loudly, the crowd dispersed quickly, Fox leaned in "There's nothing to be ashamed of" she said and closed the door; Laura just hugged Lynx tighter not wanting to let him go.
After Laura was back to sleep, Lynx returned to the armoury, pulled a CAR-15 off the wall and shoved a few dozen magazines into a backpack, he walked over to the firing range, slapped in a magazine, set the weapon to semi-auto and fired at the targets.
An few hours later, Fox came to the firing range to practice, she found Lynx there with thirty empty magazines and almost a thousand spent casings littering the floor around him, he still had six magazines left
'He's been here for hours, there must be something heavy on his mind' she thought "how are you shooting today, boy" she asked him, he put his weapon down and picked up his target sheets, 9's and 10's.
"What's the matter" she asked
"Nothing" he replied
"Lynx, we've been friends almost forever, I know when something is bothering you" Fox said
"Laura misses her parents" he said
"And she wants to go home" Fox finished what him was saying
"But" Lynx said
"But you don't think they will understand or accept her after this" Fox answered again, Lynx nodded, Fox slapped him
"What was that for" Lynx demanded holding his muzzle
"Just making sure you're thinking straight" Fox said
"I swear she's getting more like you" he said, Fox approached him
"What, more confident, determined and beautiful" she said before she kissed him, he didn't pull away immediately, when he did
"I had a feeling you came down here just to kiss me, I've often wondered when you were going to" he said, Fox had a sheepish smile on her face "so, are you going to be shooting or what" Lynx said picking his weapon back up and continued his session with a smile on his face, Fox just shook her head and asked Tiger to bring more ammo and restock the armoury.
The early next morning, Laura strapped her PDA to her arm, a 'Hello Laura' message came up, she thought for a second and walked to her room, once inside she closed the door and called Lynx, Lynx's face appeared on the holographic display
"Laura I see you got a PDA, I hope you've been running the through the training lessons" Lynx said
"No I just wanted to 'shoot the breeze' with you first, did I say it right" she replied
"Hang on" Lynx said and screen went blank, a few seconds later he reappeared "I had to find a quiet place down here, you did say it right, now what do you want to talk about", they spent the next hour talking.
Later in the hanger bay "ready, on three, one , two , three" Fox said as she helped load a missile onto a launch rail, she heard a heavy metallic thud she looked up at saw Lynx walking toward her "Lynx, you finally out of ammo" she said
"No, I was talking to Laura" Lynx said
"And" Fox asked
"She wants to go home" Lynx said
"You love her" Fox asked
"I will miss having her around" he replied and walked away
'He didn't answer the question' she thought.
That night Laura couldn't sleep, she climbed out of bed and walked to Lynx's room, she pushed open the door to reveal Lynx waiting for her, "I heard you coming" he said, she unzipped her jumpsuit and let it slip down to her waist as he slowly pulled her close to her and kissed her, "you know you're half naked this time" he whispered to her
"I don't care, just kiss me like before" she whispered back wrapping her arms around him, staring into his yellow eyes and they kissed each other deeply and passionately.
The next day Laura walked down to the firing range, she open the door to see Lynx and Fox kissing, Laura stood there shocked "HOW COULD YOU, I THOUGHT YOU LOVED ME" she screamed then ran as fast as she could, when she got to the hanger bay a fighter was waiting on the lift for her
"Hey, Tiger, Fox said I could start my flight lessons early, she'll join me in five minutes" she yelled, Tiger just nodded and hit a button on his PDA, Laura climbed in and got strapped in.
The lift and the fighter started ascending as Lynx and Fox arrived, Fox pointed at her then she saw Tiger turn to look at her as she disappeared onto the flight deck.
She flew out of the flight deck as fast as her engines could go, her radar showed two ship exiting the flight deck behind 'Lynx and Fox' she thought 'got to lose them' she threw her fighter around chunks of ice,
A buzzing sound came through her headphones "Laura, turn around, Lynx has tone on you" Fox's voice, she pull up hoping to break their lock, the buzzing continued she looked behind her to see that he was in a perfect firing position 'Lynx wouldn't fire' she thought, but she thought wrong. The buzzing turn into a scream as Lynx launched a missile at her.
