#3 of The End of Everything

Sorry about the delay between chapters. In school I had essay after essay father writing assignment after essay, so needless to say I was written out to the point of not wanting to finish. But I did and chapter three is slightly longer than the other two, enjoy! :3

Micah's father faded from his sight as he was dragged into the rift. He became silent as they ran, softly crying to himself. When they emerged, they were actually lucky for once and the army had already moved on. Since the area was clear, Jay decided they could rest for a moment and finally put Micah down. Micah just walked next to a tall rock wall and slumped down, drawing up his knees as he hugged them. Tears still ran down his muzzle, but he was no longer sobbing; just stared bleakly at what was in front of him.

Jay noticed and thought it best to leave him be for now. They would have to get going soon, but for now he could scout out the area they were in. "Micah, I'm going to check out where we are, just stay here okay?" Jay said softly. Micah didn't even acknowledge he said anything.

They were in a small clearing about two-thirds the way up the mountain, or so Jay assumed. With all the dark fog and smoke in the air, he couldn't see the peak. A few screeches of aerial demons somewhere in the smoke echoed. The clearing was a small twenty foot circle of flat terrain imbedded in the side of the mountain. Behind the rift was a sheer wall of stone that rose out of sight into the haze, and in front of the rift was a straight drop off of a cliff that fell close to two-hundred feet. The ground was visible, but unclear with all the debris in the air.

"Micah, I think we should get moving. We need to try and beat the army to the closest town." Jay said as he walked up to the young otter. He just nodded silently and got up off the barren rock. "I think we can beat them to Shourdan if we use a portal. Demon forces don't have portals." Jay created the portal against the rock wall, and entered with Micah following silently behind.

Once they exited the portal, they were met with a shocking sight. The demons were somehow already attacking the haven, a large hole in the towns protective wall allowing the forces entry. Micah stared at the moving wall that was the army with his mouth agape as they slowly flooded into the city.

Jay walked up behind Micah and put his paw on his shoulder. "Micah, I'm sorry but we can't do anything about Shourdan. We need to keep moving." Suddenly Micah looked angry, but not at Jay. He was staring at the city he grew up in, eyes ablaze. Then Micah found his voice. "Screw that. My mom is still in there, not to mention all of the other innocent furs." And with that Micah started sprinting "I won't let them die for no reason! Not when I can do something."

Jay quickly sprinted after him. "Micah you don't know what you're getting into! You can't do this!" Jay yelled as he tried to stop him. But Jay couldn't catch him, even with his air manipulation. It took all Jay had to keep Micah in sight. All of the sudden, Micah reached the wall and started run straight up. Jay almost tripped. He was the only person ever that's used air manipulation, that he'd met anyway. Then he noticed flashes of yellow on Micah's hind paws and small cracks in the wall. 'He's not using air manipulation, he's using some kind of shield in the shape of cleats to stab a foot hold in the wall. Clever.'

Jay smiled as he reached the wall himself and started up. The wolf started to respect the otter even more than he already had. Lucky for Jay he was much faster scaling the wall that Micah so he could finally catch up. But he didn't stop him. He was wondering what Micah thought he could do. Jay decided to watch and stay ready to get Micah out if things went bad, whether he wanted to or not.

Micah was making his way towards the council building which was the center of town. A few demons sometimes crossed their paths, but Micah dispatched them without even summoning his swords. Along the way, Jay noticed the majority of the demons were within half a mile of the outside wall, and he figured Micah noticed too. And when they neared the council building, large groups of civilians were going the same way they were. When they were outside the pavilion they saw the large crowd that had formed outside the building. Jay picked out a few frantic voices screaming 'Where's Felix!'

Micah jumped of the roof they were standing on and cracked it sending small shards of clay shingle off the edge. He sailed over the crowd and landed on the council building roof met with hundreds of shocked gasps. Micah merely walked over to the center of the roof, and sat down. Jay stayed where he was and watched, curious as to what was going to happen.

Micah's soft white aura shined from the roof casting a white glow over the crowd as they waited for something to happen. After a few moments of silence Micah started to rise. Not to his feet, but off the roof. His body started levitating while his legs were still crossed. A bit of static electricity started to zip around and the energy in the atmosphere grew stronger. After Micah floated ten feet off of the roof, a small transparent blue sphere appeared around Micah and Jay realized what he was doing.

'He's making a shield! A big one.' Jay thought as his eyes widened. The sphere stayed the same size for a few more seconds. Then Micah extended his arms and legs and threw his head back and yelled. The sphere shot out growing exponentially as it expanded past the crowd and continued. Jay thought it was just a regular shield that wouldn't stop anything till it had been set in place, like most shields. But then a demon jumped off a building behind Jay and tried to attack the large crowd. They all shrieked, but then stared in wonder as the demon made contact with the blue sphere and was blown back a quarter mile.

"What?!" Jay exclaimed as he saw the demon get launched away. 'That shouldn't be possible, it's still expanding! He somehow created a shield all it's own that dispels demons yet passes over furs harmlessly. What else can this kid do?' He thought as he stared at the young otter that had started to descend. As soon as his hind paws touched the flat concrete roof, the sphere, which had almost made it to the outer wall, became thicker and turned a bright shade of electric blue, Then it passed the wall and stopped. Then Micah slumped down to his knees, and fell over.

"Micah!" Jay howled as he jumped the crowd. A couple people heard him say it and started whispering. It was a sea where 'who's Micah? Wasn't that Felix?' rippled all everywhere and soon the crowd became curious and started to speak up trying to find out who was on the roof. Jay ran over to Micah's body and knelt down to check his vitals.

'Whew. Just unconscious.' Jay thought with relief. Then something hit him. "Aww shit. Why did you have to go unconscious? Now I have to talk to them... And break the bad news." He said to himself. He rolled Micah onto his back, then left him there to rest. Then he slowly walked up to the edge of the roof and looked down at the crowd staring up at him.

"Where's Felix?" Someone shouted and started a chorus of 'yeah's and 'where is he's. When the voices died down, Jay looked at the darkened sky and spoke. "He's gone." Said Jay. He continued before they could question him. "He was taken to the underworld, I'm sorry that I must tell you all to assume the worst." And with that, he steered his gaze towards his feet. A moment of silence. Then another.

And then cries of outrage, shock, and disbelief split the air as everyone in the crowd freaked out. Then a woman spoke louder than the rest. "Then who was on the roof?" Jay picked her out of the crowd and saw that it was an arctic fox that seemed familiar even though he was pretty sure he had never met her. He caught her stare and saw sorrow and pain. 'Must have known Felix pretty well. Poor woman.' "It was Micah Frost, Felix's son."

She visibly stiffened and gasped; a few others did as well. She stuttered and tried to speak but words failed her, so Jay answered the question he knew she was going to ask. "He was unjustly banished. I found him in the plains and brought him to safety."

The crowd mumbled and spoke softly amongst each other. "Alright, all citizens should be clear to return to their homes and grab essentials. You should all return to the council building here and head to bunker. Another shocking thing that comes with Felix being gone is that the shield is down. The demons are free, and are waging a war." Everyone started to murmur in fear and started to move towards their homes. "I will need all of the shield mages to meet me in the council room now. Also I want to speak to you." Jay said pointing at the arctic fox from earlier who was still staring at him.

The crowd dispersed toward their homes. The mages stayed but they resembled regular furs with no armor and it brought up the question as to why they weren't helping when the demons attacked. They all walked into the building without even glancing at Jay. But the arctic fox just stayed outside, eyes locked with Jay's. Jay decided to talk to her and jumped down off the building, slightly startling her before she regained her composure.

She fixed him with a hard stare as he approached her. When he got within five feet he stopped and stared at her right back. She started to say something but he cut her off by raising his paw. "Sorry but I can't let out details to just anybody. Who are you?"

"My name's not important. Lets just say that I am important and leave it at that." She said narrowing her eyes and folder her arms. Jay gave her a tired expression. "Whatever you say lady. Still can't let you know just anything." Then her eyes flared in anger. "I just want to know where my husband and son are!" She huffed and glared daggers at Jay. His eyes widened. "You're miss Laura Frost?" She looked exasperated. "Yes! What else do you need to know?!" She asked sarcastically.

"I'm sorry. Felix told me to keep his kid safe." 'Kinda.' He thought to himself. "I was just being cautious. Follow me." Laura huffed and did as he asked. He waved a hand and a portal appeared before them on the wall of the council building. Jay walked right through and Laura followed.

The portal exited on the roof where Micah still lay unconscious, and as soon as Laura saw him she ran to his side and knelt down. Jay just waited silently as she looked her son over. He heard her whispering to herself. "Oh Micah. Why did this have to happen to you of all people. You haven't done any wrong ever, this shouldn't have happened." After she was convinced he was unhurt, she turned her attention back to Jay. "Alright. Tell me what happened to my husband, and how my banished son survived till now.

Jay recapped their whole escapade. Him saving Micah, returning and finding his father missing, why he was missing and their findings in the underworld. She paled when she learned they had went to the realm of darkness and returned. Jay was about to explain what happened to Felix when Micah stirred.

Laura whipped around and wrapped he hands around his son. "Thank the gods you're okay." Micah hugged her back for a moment, then pried her arms off of him. He looked at Jay. "Sorry Jay, but I think she should hear this from me." He turned back to his mother and she looked back at him questioningly. He explained how is father sacrificed himself so they could get away, and when he told them that he wasn't supposed to be the head shield Mage.

"I'm sorry mom I-." Micah choked a little. "I couldn't do anything." Micah clenched his eyes shut and ground his teeth to prevent himself from crying. He did not want to cry in front of his mom. Laura just hugged him and uttered a silent prayer to the sky. Then she whispered in his ear. "I don't want to get you're hopes up, but I know your father pretty well, and I know he's stronger than he thinks. I wouldn't put it past him to make it out of any combat situation." Micah looked up, eyes wide, and Laura smiled at him and said 'let's go'.

She helped Micah stand up because he was still exhausted, and they walked to Jay who patted Micah's shoulder. "Good Job kid. I think Felix was right, You might be the one." Micah smiled and started to speak but Jay cut him off. "Save your strength, we have to talk to the council yet." He just nodded and started walking towards the portal Jay had just created to bring them back to ground level.

When they stepped out they saw a few of the civilians that lived close had started back and were nearing the building. They walked in and avoided the stairs to the bunker and walked into the council room. It had bleak grey walls and dull turquoise carpet, and to accompany all the depression a dim low lighting making everything darker than it already was. The room was also almost empty save for the large stained oak table surrounded by about twenty large chairs made with elegant wood finish and plush leather. The chairs were probably the best and most expensive pieces of furniture in the world at the moment. All but two of the chairs were filled by the shield mages; Felix's, obviously, and an unknown mage's on the right side of Felix's chair.

Once the three of them entered the room, every gaze in there shifted to them. Laura was not part of the council so she excused herself, quietly promising to talk to Micah later, and closed the door behind her leaving the two warriors alone to bask in the cold stares a few of the mages offered them. They walked over to the two empty chairs and sat. Micah sat in his fathers chair eliciting a few scowls and angry stares from the group.

A black and white wolf with bright blue eyes that showed the exact opposite of his personality spoke first in a slightly Scottish accent. "I'd like to know why you", he said pointing his finger at jay, "think you have the authority to call a council meeting." Jay shot a hard stare right back. "Are you seriously going to bring that up while we are at war? Look outside and tell me there is absolutely no reason some rules could be broken at this moment in time." The wolf frowned. "That question had two questions in it. I'd like to know why you specifically think you have this authority. Who are you?" Jay narrowed his eyes. "Not important."

The wolf allowed a smirk on his face. "Might you be that troublesome Mage that manages to get between towns without teleporting?" Jay just remained silent and kept his face impassive. "Ah, so you are." The wolf said, his smirk turning into a smile. "Ya know, there is quite a bounty on your head there fella."

"Oh shut up Derrick. Who do you intend to get the bounty from right now?" Asked a young looking dark red and black rabbit getting a scowl in return from Derrick. She turned her attention to Micah and Jay. "Never mind him, we need to know what's going on so we can decide what to do. Details. Spill em'." Jay went over yet again what had happened so they were all caught up on what they were fully dealing with. "And at this point ill let Micah speak." Jay said gesturing with his hands to the otter next to him.

Micah's surprise was clear on his face as he looked at Jay mouth hanging slightly open. He turned to look at the table toward all the waiting faces. "W-well." An audible gulp was heard. "I-I'm not one hundred percent s-sure, but all s-sides of a-a war always have a, um, leader s-so to speak." By now, Micah was visibly shaking. Jay grabbed his forearm to steady him and gave him an encouraging nod. Micah nodded back and continued. "They will have w-way more forces than we do, so the only way would be to take out the leader."

A red almost orange scaled dragon spoke next. "How do you propose we go about doing this?" He asked with a calm face.

"First of all, we need to do recon and find out if they do have a leader. After that we will need to fight in an organized pattern working together to get to the leader then take him down." Then he looked a little squeamish. "So I guess it really comes down to who's willing to help. Who here will help, because really we are almost all there is to fight back."

They all stayed silent and stared at him for a few moments before Jay broke the silence and stood up. "I'll help." Next the rabbit and dragon from earlier stood up and both agreed to help. Slowly everybody in the council except two, the wolf from earlier excluded, stood and agreed to help. They all looked at the two who hadn't moved yet and the wolf spoke up. "I don't feel like working under an outlaw and a child."

Micah was about to say something, but Jay beat him to it. "This 'child' is Felix Frost's son and he is ten times stronger than you. I've seen him in action and I can vouch for the fact that he is no pushover." Derrick snarled and and threw back a fierce reply. They argued back and forth for a few sentences before Derrick got angry enough to stand up and throw a fire ball at Jay, but while it was mid-flight, it stopped. Micah had stood up and with the gesture of one paw stopped the ball of flame, and with the other forced Derrick back into his seat.

The wolf struggled against the invisible bonds for a few seconds to no avail. "What the hell is this?!" Derrick shouted. "Why can't I dispel it?" Jay smirked as he watched Derrick struggle. "This child just knocked you on your ass. Now on to more professional matters. Will you help us or do we need to detain you further?" Derrick looked like he thought he could kill both of them with his glare alone. "You can't detain me because I won't help you. That's not a legal reason." Jay just calmly sat back down and looked the other wolf right in the eyes. "You just displayed an attack on me because you were angry. You are now as well. If you are not an ally, you are a potential threat and must be detained."

"Fuck off. Go ahead and lock me up, I won't help the likes of you even if I die." With that, Jay got up and walked over to him. After he grabbed his wrists, he told Micah he could could release him, then escorted him out of the room towards the town prison. As they were leaving Derrick muttered loud enough for everyone to hear. "I won't be in my cell for too long. After you fail I will just die with the rest. Enjoy failing the world."

Everyone was silent after Derrick was taken away. A few minutes had passed when the rabbit broke the silence with a comment directed at the other one that hadn't agree to help. "What about you?" It was a really broad shouldered croc with a few scars across his facial features wearing a dull brown trench coat. Micah couldn't see his pants as they were under the table. He merely shrugged in response, before answering in a gruff low voice. "Well it's either die now or later, might as well get it over with early."

Micah didn't particularly like his answer but at least he was going to help. Then something struck Micah. He looked at the empty chair next to him, then back at the other mages who had started to do their own things while they waited for Jay to return. "Hey, who wasn't here?" The rabbit stood up and walked over to talk to him personally while a few others got up as well. "That's Zander's spot. He is second in command, er was anyway. If what happened to Felix is true, then Zander is now the head shield Mage. Although there isn't really a shield anymore is there?" The rabbit said the last part with a smile. Micah returned a smile at her friendly attitude that seemed so different from the others. "Zander huh? I don't actually know anything about the shield mages so I don't recall the name." The rabbit looked surprised. "Odd, I'm surprised you don't recall the name of your uncle. Zander is Felix's brother, I'm not really sure why he is not here, I don't even remember seeing him when the demons were attacking. Odd." She put a paw up to her chin as she thought, then exclaimed "oh yeah! I'm, Zoey by the way,and the dragon over there is my bud Brock. You're Micah right?"

Micah smiled. "Yeah that's right. Nice to meet you Zoey, even if it is under this horrible situation." She just patted his back and said "Right back at ya cutie." She winked when she said cutie and elicited a deep red blush from Micah, but before either of them could say more, Jay returned and the mood immediately turned serious.

"Have you guys decided what to do yet?" Jay asked as he settled back in Zander's seat. Micah shook his head. "We need to figure out who and what we are dealing with, but we haven't brought up who is all going." Jay shook his head smiling. "I will be the only one to go. It's just not safe for many people to go, and though I don't really know what all of your abilities are, I am a skilled assassin and recon is always better off done solo. I will leave here soon, so everyone else should be organized. Have a few people scavenge for food for the townsfolk, have someone develop a guard schedule and keep posts to watch the shield walls. Also create a war council so we can come up with battle strategies when we fight back. Lets move!"

Everyone moved out of the room to do whatever job they decided to do, but Zoey stayed with Micah and Jay for a moment longer. Micah turned to talk to Jay. "Be careful out there. Are you sure you don't want me to come with?" "Yeah, I'll be fine. What I want you to do is take first watch. It's your shield, you should know what to look for." Then he smirked. "Why don't you take her with you," then he turned and looked at Zoey. "Unless of course you wanted to do something else." Zoey just smiled brightly and nodded. So Jay turned back to Micah and smirked again. "Looks like you made a friend. Well, I guess I'm gonna get moving. Ill be back soon." And with that Jay strolled out of the room.

_ _Micah

Micah turned back to the rabbit suddenly really self-conscious. "So, uh, I guess we go to the wall?" She smirked at him understanding why he was nervous and decided to tease him a little. "Well if we are going to be taking a boundary watch, we need to be on the boundary." She looked him in the eyes while talking. He averted his gaze and started walking towards the door. "Um, right."

They walked out into the dull light emitting from the grey, cloud-covered sky. Micah spoke to Zoey while still avoiding eye contact. "Hey, just let me know if you can't keep up, alright." She just agreed even though she felt that if someone couldn't keep up, it would be him. Then Micah took her completely by surprise. And vanished in flash, then she saw him on the roof of the building across the street. He realized she didn't follow and looked back to wave her over. She jumped up and they started running again, Micah moving much faster than she thought he could have. He would clear a roof in four quick steps then flash step across an ally to the next building. Keeping that pace was starting to get to Zoey and she eventually started falling behind. She yelled his name and he slowed to a pace she could handle.

After a short five minute run they made the last flash step onto the boundary wall. Zoey was breathing heavily while Micah just looked out over the wall completely unaffected by the run. "Wow, wasn't expecting that." Zoey huffed as she caught her breath. "Quick little guy aren't ya?" Her teasing fell on deaf ears as Micah stood still and silent, putting all his concentration on whatever he was doing. Zoey completely caught her breath and asked him what was wrong, again getting no reply. Micah remained silent for a few more moments then shook himself out of the trancelike state he was in.

"Sorry about that Zoey, I was just checking the boundary. It seems like they have all backed off the wall and are camped a few miles out." She looked dumbfounded. "Oh, sorry. I was scanning the area by running my senses along the shield." He explained rubbing his paw against his neck. "Oh, so then we technically patrolled the wall? Well that was easy, what do we do now?" "I suppose we just stay alert and I'll keep my senses peeled." Zoey stretched, then sat down. "Cool, then I guess we relax. I was hoping to learn a little more about you." Micah blushed again and sat down next to Zoey.

Jay

Jay exited the council building through a portal that led to the outer wall. He closed the portal after stepping through and immediately took off at full speed using a spell that scanned the surrounding area, searching for where the demons had moved to. Within the next thirty minutes, he managed to circle the whole sanctuary and locate four main camps. He then started towards the largest one he suspected was the main camp. Once he got within range to pick up talking, he hid himself and observed.

There were demon grunts everywhere from pretty much any nightmare you could think of. There was definitely no way to launch a frontal attack on this base. They had at least a thousand demons patrolling the outer makeshift walls. If wasn't so good at stealth he wouldn't have much of a chance doing what he already was doing.

He moved his sight spell into the camp to try and find the commander and see just what they were dealing with. The large tent in center of the camp was the obvious place to look. Two armed guards were stationed outside and inside were two forms. One was a massive gruesome creature. It slightly resembled a dragon, but its facial features were disfigured and it had no wings. The other being was much smaller than and wrapped in a large black cloak. None of its features were visible, but it appeared too small to be a demon. 'A fur maybe? That'd be absurd though.' Thought Jay.

They were in the middle of a conversation. Because of the distance, it was a little muffled, but it worked. The large one was currently speaking, and his voice was deep, icy, and slightly scratchy. "I thank you for your assistance, but I am not indebted to you. I need not do anything for you." The other one was quieter and his voice nothing like the commander's. "I understand that you are not indebted to me, and I don't seek anything other than a spot in your army. I have sacrificed much on your behalf, and all I wish for is a place in your army and the ranking I deserve for my sacrifices." The commander narrowed his eyes. "I will take you into my army without hesitation, though with a general rank is asking too much. My men believe in work and duty to receive rank. You, who has only done one thing for us, however great it was, is still not enough to my men. I will put you in charge of a battalion of close combat warriors to show my appreciation, but know that you will have to prove to them you are worthy of even that title." Jay could tell the one in the cloak didn't like that answer. "Thank you for your generosity commander." He said through gritted teeth. "You are welcome. Do not make me regret this decision. Know your place, Zander. You are dismissed." Jay's stomach plunged.
