#12 of Jumbe and Sala

On Trial

Jumbe is put on trial for being a hyena in the Pride Lands. Will he become a Tragic Hero or will he live to see another day?

It was a world of pain. Jumbe's neck hurt, but his back legs hurt the most. Long deep cuts from those claws had sliced into his fur and skin down into the muscle. He could barely move he hurt so badly, that was even if he wanted to move at all. The hyena just lay there, eyes shut in pain as he whimpered.

Simba looked over his subjects, calling out in a booming voice as he addressed them, "You all see what lies before you, an enemy. His kind came here long ago. They hunted in our lands, they killed the King, and then they destroyed this one beautiful place." He turned his head to Jumbe, glaring at him, even though the hyena's eyes were shut tight from the pain, "Your kind betrayed our trust and are never welcome here. But apparently, driving one group of you from here is not enough. An example must be made for all of your race." There was a dramatic pause as Kovu rolled the hyena onto his back, pinning him down. Before the King could say one more word, the crowd which was once silent, slowly began to mumble before someone yelled out, "Kill him!" What was once a single voice in the crowd began to echo through the assortment of creatures living in the land of plenty, even the lionesses joined in the chant as they all watched the scene unfold. The king looked at the hyena one more time, the wind of public opinion in his favor as a rain cloud began to roll in, small droplets of rain falling down to earth. The great king looked at his son-in-law, "Death." As Kovu drew his paw back, high in the air, claws extended, about to give the death blow, everyone heard someone scream out, "No!"

Sala wasn't sure what was going on, but she knew something was wrong from the beginning. They had caught a hyena. At first, she wasn't sure if it was her father, since Vitani had pulled her in close to her, not wanting the little cub to see what would happen next. But she moved her head around her mother's paw to so she could view what was happening. When Jumbe was rolled onto his back, she knew who it was, she didn't know what they were going to do to him next, but the crowd was chanting, even the lionesses were chanting for his death. Sala started to wriggle, trying to get out of Vitani's paw, pushing against it, but the older lioness was stronger than she was, holding her back, until she heard the king agree with the crowd, pronouncing the sentence of death. She cried out at the top of her lungs, "No!" Taking everyone by surprise. With Vitani and the other lionesses stunned, she was finally able to break free, running to her father and laying on top of his throat, protecting him with her tiny body.

When Simba heard the cry, his mind raced to when he was a cub, watching his father plummet to his death. The memory shook him to the core before he was able to regain his senses, watching the cub bolt passed him to lay on top of the hyena. The king walked over to her, "Why are you protecting him? He's a hyena! He's a killer!" The cub looked up at him, "He's not a killer! He saved me! He protected me! He's my daddy! Don't kill my daddy!" No one could believe their ears as the rain fell on them. Sala looked at the king, "He told me he'd heard of this place when he was little. He said the king was benevolent and that there was plenty for everyone." Her eyes were flowing with tears, mixing in with the rain, "But you want to kill him because he's different. You're not benevolent! You're a meanie!" Simba glared at her, "They killed my father!" She kept crying, "And they killed his family and took their home."

There was an uncomfortable silence in the air as the rain began to fall faster. Fur began to become matted, weighed down as the falling liquid was absorbed by each hair. The dirt the hyena had been laying on began to turn into mud. Jumbe's ears flicked as it was it by every drop, his eyes slowly opening to see Sala above him, and the massive dark colored male behind her. He could tell the oldest of the two was conflicted. He was pacing around in circles, growling. Then he looked up into the sky, staring as the rain pelted his face.

Father! What should I do, Simba tough, staring into the clouds. Forgiving Kovu and united their pride once more was easier than this, so much easier than this. If I let him live, and allow him to stay, more of his kind may come. If I kill him, it will send a message to his kind that they are not allowed here, but I will rob a daughter of her father and be no better than Scar. What do I do? He paced around again, before voicing his concerns to the crowd, "If you live, more of your kind will come. If you die, they will know they are never welcome here. My father and I drove your kind from our lands, and we will not let you come back." The massive male lion moved over, a big paw pulling Sala off her father, pushing her away so he could stand over. He leaned into whisper into Jumbe's ear, "I will not be like my uncle. I will let you live, but everyone must think you are dead." The massive lion whipped out his claws as made a slashing move, cutting open the hyena's neck superficially, but still drawing enough blood in the blow. The hyena let out a yelp, and then laid still, taking short shallow breaths, trying to pretend that he was dead. The crowd went wild, cheering at the sight of his death.

Sala let out a crying scream as she saw what the King wanted everyone to see, running to Vitani and burying herself against her chest. Vitani's head moved down, to comfort her daughter, paw pulling her in close. "I'm sorry," she said, holding the cub tightly, "I'm so sorry." Sala couldn't stop crying as Vitani leaned down to pick her up by the nape, carrying her up the path to Pride Rock.

The king looked out at his subjects, "Let every creature know that hyenas well never be allowed in this land." Slowly, he reached down, picking Jumbe up by the neck, dragging him up to Pride Rock. Slowly, the crowd began to disperse, going back to their grazing areas, though most just trying to get out of the rain.

All the lionesses watched their king drag the body up the path, watching, all of them with disgust at his actions. He had just robbed a child of her father, just like how Scar had done to him. He was continuing the cycle. But there was some confusion, why was he dragging the body up to Pride Rock? No one really knew why, but there was no sense in letting good meat go to waste.

Vitani and Sala were in the back of the cave, hearing the rain pour down as the cub cried and cried until her eyes were red. The older lioness tried to comfort her, but there was no way, she'd lost her real parents, and now her adopted father to a King she would forever hate. As she attempted to console her, the elder lioness heard footsteps and something dragging along the cave's floor. Her head turned slightly, her eyes catching Simba with Jumbe in his teeth. She let out a long snarl as she looked at him, "You killed her father in a public execution, now you bring in the body for her to look at? Don't you have any shame?" Simba growled back, before looking down at the hyena, "You can stop pretending now."

Jumbe opened his eyes, his body still in immense pain from the wounds on his flank and the stinging of the claws on his throat, the cuts still bleeding a little, even though they weren't deep. He tried to roll onto his belly, but it was a struggle. The king leaned in, pushing the hyena up with his muzzle. Jumbe moved his front legs to steady himself before he called out to his daughter, "Sala."
