"Only when i sleep am i dead to the world"
I've lived by this, yet, the fear that engulfs me so easily destroys my life; and I run from it. Running through the darkness of a place I do not remember. I see the hands, they protrude from the darkness, their only intentions to drag me back, back to the pits of sorrow and anguish I created for myself in the back of my own sick, corrupted mind. I turn, heading down a corridor that leads to I know not where, knocking over trash can as I grasp the night air in search of much sought after freedom that I will never find. The chains clang against my chest, these necklaces of crosses and cryptic symbols around my neck intertwine as I pump fast, running from whatever pursued me. My spiked bracelets reflect the moonlight as I turn left, the cold air rushes past my fur as I push myself on. I see lights, they mark the end of this alley I found myself in, tears run down my face and get blown away into the wind as it passes over me. I burst from the shadows, leaving the dark alley behind and stepping out into the street, I look behind me, and see nothing.
Suddenly, bright lights illuminate me, casting light upon my grayish fur, exposing my figure and gothic attire for all to see, Celtic and tribal designs etched into my arms become a blur as I move my paws quickly, blocking the light from my eyes not yet used to such high beams. I stood dazed, loud sounds rang in my ears, seeking out my spinal cored and crushing my nerves into an unbearable throbbing expressed as a painful moan. I cup my ears and close my eyes, crushing my own skull to stop the noise. I fall to my knees, bow down and cry, gritting my teeth as vague memories of the past shoot through my head, I see lights, more lights then ever, screams and laughter from all around me; then darkness. I fall to my side, curling up and shivering like the pathetic soul that I am.
I hear voices, they're angry, hateful voices. Yelling at me again, make them stop.
I scream aloud, "Shut Up! Fucking shut your mouth! I'll find you if you don't cease your words that bring me such pain!" I cried, yelling at those I do not see.
Screeching, voices, angry taunts of words I don't understand, then silence once more. The endless beam leaves me, only do I lay in the soft light of a floating orb, confused and disoriented. Time passed before I open my eyes slightly, staring blankly at feet only inches from me, I turn my head and look up to see a figure standing over me, two horns and folded wings are what I'm only able to distinguish about them.
"Satan?" I ask softly, feeling that fear engulf my soul once more. I roll onto my back, brushing my tail against the cold street as I struggle to escape from him, I've been in his presence before, and to which no words could describe the fear felt within me when I saw myself in the eyes of the fallen angel. I push hard with my feet, scampering away in fear like a wounded animal; I turn over and dug my paws into the hard concrete, pulling with what little strength I had left. I got to my feet and sprinted in a blind panic, no words escaped my mouth, only in my mind did I scream aloud.
I looked back at the figure, his arm and paw extended; I feared he would give case. I had just escaped that hell, I wish not to return, I will not be dragged back into the dark where all the painful memories would be reawaken. I turned back, just in time to see the pole I'd soon hit.
In search of sanctuary
The wolf rolled over, a slight groan escaped his throat as he rubbed his paw over his head, feeling the bump from when he hit the pole, he groaned again. As he lay there, he moved his other paw around the surface of whatever he was laying on, it felt soft and cushy, witch he thought odd since concrete was hard and cold. He then realized that he was on a couch and his eyes opened wide. Sitting up quickly, he looked around at his surroundings and saw that he was in an apartment. The evening sun cast its warming rays upon him through a large window behind the couch. He looked about in alarm, trying to think how he got there, but more importantly, how to get out. He then saw a door with a peephole to his left.
"That must be the way out" he thought to him self, looking to the other side of him and seeing another door next to a hall, in front of him, his trench coat and boots sat on a coffee table. He picked them up slipping his boots back on and throwing on his coat, then slowly and silently crept toward the door, keeping a watchful eye over the hall. He felt it safe to make an escape and went for it.
"Aw, you're up.." Came a voice from behind. The wolf turned quickly to see the figure from the night before, he jumped back against the wall next to the only way out and slid down, not moving his sight away. A tall, anthropologic dragon stepped from the doorway next to the hall, dark red scales covered his body and silver chest plates ran from the top of his neck all the way down his chest to the tip of his tail. His wings were folded and the two horns were actually four horns, two smaller ones shadowed by the two larger ones.
The wolf pressed hard against the wall, pushing his feet like before in an attempt to escape as the dragon approached.
"You had me worried when you hit that pole, seemed to be an awfully hard blow to the head." He said with a smile. "You're quite an odd one, never seen such a jittery little wolf before." He continued. The wolf didn't trust his friendliness; he knew the consequences of trusting those you barley know, and he didn't know this guy at all. He reached for the knob, keeping his eyes on him, but couldn't find it. He panicked, flailing to find the key to escape this potential threat. "What's wrong?" The dragon asked, tilting his head a little in question.
He finally grabbed hold of the knob, turning it quickly; he pulled himself up and out the door and ran down the hallway, nearly losing his balance, not knowing where he was or where he was going. He came to a split corridor and made a hard left, and ran straight into a fox.
The two collided hard, causing them to fall back and hit the floor on top of each other.
"Get off me!" yelled the fox, pushing the wolf away. Standing up, the fox looked down at him. "Watch where you're going dip shit!" she yelled some more. The wolf turned and looked up at the fox, her military pants, short black tank-top and gold earring rattled ears explained her harsh retort.
"Shut it you stupid bitch!" He yelled, standing up. "I'm trying to get away from this dragon and you just happened to be in my way!" He shouted, pointing back down the hall. Back at the apartment, the red dragon stuck his head out the door and looked up and down the hall.
The fox walked past the wolf and pushed him into the wall, then leaned around the corner and saw the dragon. "Damn it, are you fucking with people again!?" She yelled at him. The dragon looked down the hall at her.
"What!? No! I found him on the street last night and took him in! And where the fuck have you been all night?!" He said, leaving his room and walking down the hall. "Out!" The fox replied and turned back, stepping up to the wolf.
"And don't call me bitch, Fucker!" She yelled, jabbing her finger into his chest.
"What ever you say, hoar!" he smirked and flipped her off. The fox grabbed his finger and slowly bent it back as he gasped in pain.
"I said stop it!" The fox yelled, gritting her teeth while the wolf struggled to free his aching finger. The dragon stepped between them and startled the wolf, making him bump against the wall, freeing his finger from her grasp. The dragon and the fox just looked at the wolf with his eyes fixed on him.
"What the fuck's wrong with you?" the fox asked.
"Look, it's not every day I see a seven foot red dragon, aright?!" He said, "let alone be brought home by one, how do I know he wasn't gonna eat me or something?" He questioned.
"Who, him?!" the fox asked, pointing back at the dragon who was stunned and just stared back at the wolf.
"ya.. Whatever its' name is." He said nervously.
The fox laughed a little at his allegation. "He wouldn't eat you, he almost choked to death on the last furry he ate..." she said with a smile. The red dragon looked straight into the wolf's eyes and grinned.
"I don't know, I'm willing to make an acceptation." He said, licking his teeth.
"ok, I'm out of here" The wolf said, pushing past the fox and heading down the hall.
"I was joking!" The dragon called to him, "come back! I'll make you something to eat, I'm sure you're hungry!" He called, motioning for him to come. The wolf stopped where he was, rubbing his stomach; he couldn't remember when he had last eaten. The fox turned and slapped the dragon on the arm.
"What the fuck?! Don't invite him to dinner! He's a smart ass who doesn't know when to shut up!" she cried, slapping him again. The dragon just looked at her and smiled.
"Heh, kinda makes me wonder why you two didn't get along." He smirked.
The wolf turned around and looked at them, then walked slowly up to the dragon, passing a disgusted glance at the fox. "...What kind of food?" he asked with a smile.
The smell of steak and mashed potatoes curled in the wolf's nose as the dragon sat his plate down in front of him. "Thanks..." The wolf said, picking up his fork and knife and beginning to cut into the dark meat. The wolf sat in the farthest seat across the long oak table from the fox and dragon, he kept himself quite attentive as he partook of his delicious meal. The dragon sat next to the fox and the two looked over at the wolf, who was scooping food into his mouth as if he hadn't eaten for days.
"So..." the dragon started, watching him as he devoured the food, "what's you name?" He asked, picking up his fork.
"...Sin..." he managed, looking up from his plate and whipping bits of meat from his mouth.
"Sin?" The dragon asked.
"Stupid name" the fox added, folding her arms across her chest. The dragon looked at her with a sneer. "Well, it is.." she insisted, looking back at him.
The dragon sighed and looked back at the wolf, "how about your last name?' he asked.
"Don't have one." The wolf replied, dicing up another piece of steak.
"Oh? So, you're somewhat of an orphan?" The dragon asked, but Sin didn't reply. He just sat there, staring at his plate with his knife in his paw. The dragon fell silent, setting his utensils down upon the table and feeling uneasy.
"I don't like that word..." Sin said, looking up at them. "Perhaps if my farther hadn't had been the way he was, I would have chosen to carry on his name... and if my mother hadn't had just up and fucking left me, I wouldn't be the way I am..." he said, his words as cold as his constant gaze. The fox sat back in her chair and noticed that Sin was holding both ends of the knife, squeezing it as blood trickled over his wrist and onto the stained oak table. He was silent once more, looking down and watching his blood seep through his fingers as he loosened his grip. "heh..." he muttered with a smile, opening his hand and looking at his sliced up palm. "Sorry, kind of a touchy subject you hit there... " He said, whipping up the small amount of blood from the table with a napkin, then wrapping the napkin around his paw. " I thank you for the dinner, I'll let myself out.." he said, sliding back in his chair.
"Do you have someplace to go?" the dragon asked. The fox glanced at him and kicked him under the table. "What!?" he whispered to her.
"No, but I'll find a place" Said Sin, getting up from his chair.
"You're welcome to stay the night" the dragon said, "you could leave in the morning, when you're well rested." The fox once again kicked him in the leg, a little harder though. "Ow! Stop fucking kicking me!" he said to her; she gave him a resentful look. Sin considered his offer; it would be nice to sleep somewhere nice and warm, then on the street.
"Alright, as long as it won't be an inconvenience." He finally said.
"Oh, not at all" replied the dragon. "By the way, I'm Jack, and that's Kaline" he said pointing to the fox. She just looked back at Sin with cold eyes.
"Well, thank you for your kindness. Now, where do I sleep?" He asked.
"On the couch" Kaline replied without hesitation, pushing past Jack as she left the room. Sin watched her leave, then glanced at him.
"I don't think she likes me." he said, grinning. Jack just smiled back.
Kaline awoke from her sleep. Rolling over in bed, she glanced at her clock. "one-thirty..." she muttered to herself and sat up, rubbing her stomach and half asleep, wishing she hadn't skipped dinner. She stood and walked toward the door, stumbling over her cloths she had taken off and thrown to the floor. "ow! Fuck!" she cried when she stubbed her toe on something. She made it to the door and remembered their delightful guest was sleeping in the next room so she went for her robe; which was in the closet; across the room.
She stepped from her room and quietly shut the door behind her, tying up her robe as she made her way down the hall. She walked into the living room and was startled to see Sin, facing the oversized window behind the couch. He stood there like a statue, his arms to his side, and his tail motionless. He wore nothing but his black pants and his necklaces; they glistened in the moonlight that poured in through the window. His fur made an outline of him in the light, his slim build standing out from the city view through the window.
"What are you doing?" her voice was quiet as she approached him, keeping a cautious stride. He didn't move; she stepped up to his side and he looked at her rather suddenly, startling her again. She saw in his eyes the pain that one feels when their life has been changed for the worst, the kind of pain that would drag even the bravest to their knees. If only she could've seen past that, to what he saw as he looked into her eyes; the scene was quite different. He turned away from her and back to the window without a word, gazing out into open space. She followed his gaze into the depth of the endless abyss of scattered lights; and, for some reason, to a single, dimly lit star among all the others.
"...That's my mothers' star..." He said to her, keeping his eyes on the flickering light in the sky. She turned to him and saw a tear curl down his fur. "She left me when I was two..." he said, his voice almost a whisper to her. "That night, on the steps of the hospital.. I looked up to the clear heavens, not a cloud nor star scared the blackness, and asked why.. why did they take her.. how could they... and I cried... but from my eyes no tears came.. except for one..." he whipped the tear from his face and rubbed it into the fur of his paw. She watched him, then turned back to the sky, where the one star stood out. "The tear feel from my cheek, yet left no stain on the steps where it surly had hit." He said, looking back up to the star. "When I turned my gaze back to the skies, that star was there..." He turned to her and smiled. "I find it comforting to think of it as her, even if the tear might have fallen on my pants or something." She looked into his eyes again, and saw it. In the dark blue that engulfed his eyes, in a spot she couldn't see before, was what she felt inside herself. "But..." he said, looking to the ground. "after she died, my farther changed, he blamed me for her death and therefore made the next sixteen years of my life a living hell..."
Kaline couldn't think of what to say, her feelings for him changed with the telling on one story. Sin remained silent, watching as clouds shifted and dissolve across the nights' sky. He winced, feeling her paw brush against his blood stained, bandaged up palm. He looked at her, and she smiled, carefully unwrapping the napkin around his paw; it fell to his feet as she brought his paw up and kissed his scar gently, slowly licking over the open gash and kissing it again. He watched her as she lapped up the small amounts of blood that clung to his fur, then removed his paw from hers. She looked up at him and met his eyes, they glistened in the light as he pressed his paw against her cheek, rubbing her fur with his thumb as he briefly kissed her on the lips, smiling slightly to her, then kissing her again, which seemed like for an eternity to her.
His paw left her cheek and went around her back, pulling her close to him. She submitted, placing her paw on his chest as their kiss continued on. The smoothness of their bodies rubbing against one another loosened and undid the strap that held her robe closed, letting the front of her robe flow freely from her body and seemingly wave in wind that wasn't there. Sin rubbed her back, moving his paw in circles as his other paw slid over her fur and under her thin clothing, lightly touching her side. Their kiss broke and they took in much needed air, her warm breath falling upon his chest as she breathed. She shifted her shoulders, letting the top of her robe slip off of her and fold over his paw. He moved his paw from her back and her robe fell to the floor, her arms slipping through the sleeves as it gliding over her bushy tail, her beautiful body came to be through the darkness, engulfed in the moonlight that showed off every curve of her succulent form.
Sin smiled, gliding his paw down the side of her neck and across her chest as he held her close with the other. She shivered at his touch, placing her arms around the small of his back, then placing her head against his chest. Nuzzling her neck, he kissed her softly and suckled at her, slowly rocking her back and forth in his arms in a soothing motion. She felt safe with him, warm and safe. Their comforting rocking slowed and he laid her down on the couch, rubbing the side of her face and behind her ear as he lay over her. She kissed his neck as he had done, letting her tongue glide over his fur as she traveled down his chest and up again. Along with her tongue, her paws made the trip south, pressing softly over his stomach; he shuddered, arching his back at the light touch as she reached into his pants.
He breathed heavily; her paws slipped out and griped the front of his pants, undoing the buttons in a calm, slow motion as they embraced once more in passionate ecstasy. He was ready for her, kissing her as she worked away the last button. He took no hesitation in slipping himself deep within her. A feeling of pure sensation and energy swept over them both, filling their bodies with one another's soul and being. She moaned to him, letting him kiss her neck as she clinched her teeth, shutting her eyes and moaning louder. He pushed into her, breathing hard along with the deep breaths she took. Her arms tightened around him and she cried, lifting her leg back as he caressed her side and up her thigh. He held her leg back, keeping in motion with her rocking as licked up her throat and off her chin. Her eyes open slightly and her jaw eased up, and she saw his face, his eyes, gazing deep into hers, and she fell silent. On the side of her face, his paw brushed her fur, and she placed her paw over his; she could feel his knot inside her, growing larger as he kissed her on the lips, she kissed him back. He pulled from her and her eyes closed tightly again as they both reached their climax, his back arched and he exploding within her as she closed tightly around him, lifting herself up and into him; they both moaned to each other, his cum secreted from her and over her tail. They fell silent, breathing heavily and panting as Sin softened from her, kissing her again and again despite his weak and tired muscles. She lapped at his face, resting her leg after he released it from his grasp. His arms held her as he lay by her side, rubbing her stomach and kissing the back of her neck. They feel asleep in each other's arms, a tight hold secured their love.
The air was cool in the early morning, yet darkness still befell the quiet room. Kaline slept alone on the couch, half covered by thin sheets, her figure lightly shrouded with what slight amount of light that came through the window. The sheets crinkled under her paw as she stretched, cracking the bones in her neck and back as she yawned. She sat up and bent back, the sheets shipping off her. She rubbed her eyes in the darkness and felt where Sin had rested, but felt nothing.
"Sin?" She asked, yawning again and looking about the room. Slipping her robe on, she went into the kitchen, where Jack stood, prepared breakfast. She took her seat. "Where's Sin" she asked him.
"Gone" He replied, scraping cooked eggs onto a plate of bacon and toast, then handing it to her. She took it but didn't have much of an appetite now. "He left before you woke, about an hour ago. He said he couldn't explain, but that you'd understand."
"Why didn't you stop him?!" she yelled, striking her fist against the table.
"Well..." he started, "after I passed you two on the couch this morning, I figured he'd be back." he said, smiling to her as he sipped his coffee. "Thought you didn't like him."
She opened her mouth in defense, but was silenced when a knock came from the door. She got up and leaned over the table, looking the dragon in the eye. "I do." She said, then left to answer the door.
Crossing the living room, she spotted a small piece of paper on the coffee table out of the corner of her eye. The knocking came again and she looked back to the door, then to the note. She picked it up and unfolded it to read two words quickly scribbled on it with ink.
"he's coming" it simply said.
The knocking came again, she crumpled up the note and dropped it to the floor.
"Yes?" she asked when opening the door. A scrawny looking lynx stood before her, his clothing somewhat tattered and smelt of cheap liquor.
"Is Sin here?" he asked in a trembling voice.
She thought for a moment. "Who? No. Who are you?"
"Valin, I'm his farther."
"Well, I don't know who you're talking about. And what makes you think he's here?"
"Someone from the streets told me they saw a dragon named Jack take him in the night, and that he lived here, does he?"
"No, he doesn't, so leave" She said and shut the door, but his paw kept it from closing.
"I have the right room!" he yelled, digging his claws into the door as he tried to force it open. "Where is Sin!?" he yelled again.
Jack sat his fork down, listening to what was being said in the other room. Kaline put as much strength into the door as she could, but the lynx was winning this feat of strength. Behind him, the elevator dinged as it arrived at the floor and its doors open. Sin stepped from the doors and look up.
"fuck." He said and Valin turned.
"Aw! There you are!" cried the lynx and rushed him, grabbing him by the throat and slamming him against the metal wall of the elevator. Kaline fell forward with the sudden lack of opposing force, hitting her head on the door. She got to her feet and flung open the door. Sin looked at her over Valin's shoulder, he was afraid, she could see it.
"Sin!" she cried, their gaze broken when the doors of the elevator closed. The light clicked down toward the lobby as it descended. "Shit!" she cried and ran down the hall.
Valin pulled Sin from the wall and threw him into the doors. "Come, son, we're going to go see mom" He said, stepping up behind him. Sin turned and slugged him across the jaw, knocking a few teeth loose.
"Damn it, Mom's dead!" he cried, "you can't just..." he stopped and fell to his knees, gripping his arms against his stomach and coughing up blood as Valin pulled his fist from between his arms. Sin gritted his teeth, blood seeped through them as he looked up at his farther. The elevator dinged, announcing their arrival; Valin grabbed his arm and dragged him out the doors and through the lobby. Back at the room, Jack stepped from the kitchen, the sudden silence made him worry. He stopped by the couch and looked out the window to the streets, in time to see Sin as he's thrown into the back of a black '92 SUV.
"Hey!" he yelled, slamming his paws against the window as well as his forehead, watching the scene unravel. From the front doors, Jack saw Kaline run up behind the lynx as he got out of the back seat, striking him with her fists; the lynx turned around and backhanded her, which pissed Jack off even more.
"Let go of me!" Kaline yelled, struggling with him as he shoved her in next to Sin. Jack leaned back, then punched the glass window, sending shards of glass raining down on Valin. He looked up after the light shower and saw the dragon stepping out on the windows ledge, looking straight at him. He slammed the door and ran to the other side, revving up the engine and taking off. Jack leaped from the window, spreading his wings and flapping hard as he gave chase.
"You're sick, Valin!" yelled Sin, struggling with the seatbelt he had tied him to the seat with.
"Shut up!" Valin yelled back, going even faster as they reached the Calahone Bridge. "We'll be with her soon, and we'll be a family again!" He said happily, swerving in and out of traffic, going faster.
"What the fuck's he talking about?!" Kaline cried, trying to open the locked door. Up ahead, an interstate bus was approaching, Valin saw it, Sin saw it. He struggled even harder, only making enough slack for him to turn.
"Lean back!" he told her, and she did. He kicked with the door with both feet, again and again he smashed into it till its lock snapped and the door swung open, striking an oncoming car and ripping it from its joints. She turned to him and he pulled her to him, kissing her then hugging her. It didn't last long.
He kissed her neck and whispered into her ear. "When you hit the ground," he said, looking her in the eye, "roll." she looked at him in confusion, but then understood.
"Wait! Don't!!" she cried, but he already made up his mind.
"I love you" he said with a smile, "and I'm sorry." He pushed; she tried to pull him with her, but grabbed one of his necklaces. She fell from the car. Hit the ground. Rolled. Sin struggled with his belt, but when the horn of the bus echoed around him, he gave up and looked out the front window.
"...dad..." he said, sighing as he sit back in his seat.
"yes son?" his farther replied, swerving across the center lane and hitting eighty-five, plowing up the road in a path straight into the bus.
"...I hate you..."
Seconds later, the car slammed into the bus head-on, exploding in a blaze of fire, glass, and twisted metal as it plowed through the bus, igniting a second explosion that rocked nearby cars, sending a shockwave across the street. Cars swerved out of the way, furries slammed on their breaks, leaving their cars, some screaming, others crying. Kaline pushed herself up, her arm was broken along with her tail, her body badly scraped up from her skid across the pavement. She watched as black smoke chocked the blue sky, the fire loomed out of control as furries panicked, running around in confusion and dismay; but she just sat, painfully aware of what had happened.
"Sin!!" She cried aloud, bursting into tears as she fell forward, burying her face in her arms on the hot concrete. A shadow fell over her, light bursts of wind scattered pebbles around as Jack landed near her. He saw what happened sat next to her, covering her with his wing from the scorching sun. Her cries lessened and she looked up at him, he hugged her, holding her close, letting her cry on his shoulder.
"It's ok..." He whispered to her, knowing it wasn't. He sighed, hearing distant sirens fall upon the scene, reassuring anyone who may have survived the impact. The smoke rose through the air, darkening the sky and casting its shadow over all those who weep. "It's ok."
-Five years later
"Mommy? Mommy! Whatcha do'in out here?" the child asked, stepping onto the porch.
"hm? Oh, just waiting for someone..." she replied, looking to the empty heaves high above them as she sat on the front steps.
"Who? Jack?"
She smiled, "Now you know Jack doesn't stop by on Sundays."
"Then who are you waiting for?" he asked, sitting in her lap. She hugged him gently and kissed him.
"I'll tell you later." She said, letting him lay against her chest as she stroked the back of his head. She closed her eyes to hide the tears. They sat silently, she massaged his back, smelling his soft fur every now and then, his scent the only thing that brings her comfort now a days. She breathed deeply as she finally calmed down, the last of her tears falling from her cheek as she listened to the soothing sound of his heart.
"...Star light, star bright" the young fox began to sing, looking to the sky. She stiffened, opening her eyes slightly as he chanted a poem he was never taught.
"First star I see tonight..." she lifted her head as he sang happily, hugging him tightly.
"I wish I may... I wish I might..." she smiled, seeing a star flickering in the sky, it's strong light casting a ring around itself and lighting up the night as it glistened in their eyes. She rubbed his chest, her paw passed over his shirt and across his black and white cross that hung around his neck; she kissed him lightly and closed her eyes, singing along with him the final verse, laying her head upon his shoulder.
"...have the wish... I wish tonight..."
