Ch.6 - Wolfania - The Kingdom of Wolves
It was now four months since they had left the Kitsune village, and a little over two months since they parted ways with Jake. In one more month, Vixena would come to full term and have her child. It was snowing, and they had set up camp for the night, the two foxes snuggling with each other next to the fire. "Tomorrow we'll be at Wolfania, and I'll try to get us a room at the inn," Foxara told Vixena, who nodded in response, her arms wrapped around him. He wasn't too hopeful, given the 'relationship' between foxes and wolves. In fact, he was wondering if they would even get through the front gates!
The next morning, they arrived at the city. They approached the gates, and were met by two guards. "Halt, this is Wolfania. What business do a couple of foxes have here?" The other guard then said, "Yeah, what makes you think we'll let you in? Hehehe." "Hahaha, yeah! Get lost, if you don't want to get hurt." Foxara looked at them. "I'm Foxara Kitsuno, and this is my mate, Vixena. Please, we were told by the Kitsunes to come here." The two guards looked at each other. "FOXARA KITSUNO??? HAHAHA, so, Kitsuno himself has come here! Hey, what do you say we let them in? This should be entertaining." "Heh, yeah, lets see how they handle the City of Wolves." They opened the gates, letting the two in.
They walked inside cautiously, knowing this wasn't a very friendly place for them. The citizens noticed them, some of them scowling at the presence of foxes in the city, some smirking, evil intentions in their eyes, all of them surprised to some degree. They walked forward, Vixena keeping close to Foxara, fear in her eyes, Foxara keeping focused, looking for any signs of hostility. They watched as the people gathered around them, and noticed the wolves they had fought before, who also recognized them.
"Well, look who's here. Hey, boss, l-" He was cut off again. "Yeah, I see him. Hey, Kitsuno, what gives you the right to come here?" Whispering is immediately heard among the crowd, everyone immediately recognizing the name. Then, a young white wolf, looking to be about Foxara's age, steps up. "Oh, master Wofana, this is him, he attacked us," the boss said. "Silence, you. He had every right. Your lackey did try to take his mate. You know our laws." Wofana looked at the older wolf, a very serious look in his eyes. "B-but, master -" "I said silence! The laws say that you may not mate a female that has already been made a life-mate to someone else! Your lackey almost broke that law, and thus his attack was justified!" The older wolf hung his head, a defeated look in his eyes. "Yes, master Wofana." He then left, followed by his lackey.
Wofana then turned his attention to the foxes. "So you're Foxara and Vixena. I'm afraid that since you have entered, I can't allow you to leave," he says, smirking, a devilish gleam in his eye. "Unless, you can take me in battle!" He unsheathes his sword, pointing it at Foxara. "I challenge you, Foxara Kitsuno! Wield your sword, and meet me outside the city walls!" He does so, the entire crowd following the young wolf and foxes. Foxara turns to Vixena. "Keep a safe distance. I sense great strength within him." She does so, backing up into the trees, but still able to see the fight.
The two warriors faced each other, sword in hand, ready to attack. They then charged, swinging, their swords clashing. They pushed their swords together, staring each other down, then jumped back, only to charge and clash their swords again. Wofana then swung around, getting behind Foxara, swinging his sword. Foxara dodged it, then countered with a jumping slash, the wolf dodging it. Wofana then charged a dark blast, firing it at Foxara, who sidestepped it, sending a light blast back. Wofana hit it with his sword, sending it off to the side, then disappeared, reappearing behind Foxara, lunging at him.
Foxara barely dodged the attack, jumping to the side and landing on the ground. He quickly got up just as Wofana was swinging at him. Foxara slashed again, managing to hit Wofana's arm, then lunged, but Wofana dodged it, countering with a swing, hitting Foxara's arm as well. The two stood there, grasping their wound, staying focused on each other. They then charged again, swinging. As the swords clashed, Foxara's shattered, knocking him back.
Vixena watched as Foxara landed on the ground. "Foxara!" she yelled, starting to run over to him. "No, Vixena, stay back! I'm fine!" Foxara got up, charging a blast of light. He then started firing at Wofana, who ran to the side, dodging each one. He came to the fox, swinging. Foxara caught the sword, holding the blade between his hands, then pulled it away from Wofana, throwing it to the side. He then sent his elbow into the wolfs gut.
Wofana landed ten feet away, holding his stomach. He got back up, panting. Foxara looked at him, ready for an attack, but instead got laughter. "Hahahahaha... you're GOOD! I haven't had this much fun in a long time!" He walked over to Foxara, extending his hand. He looked at Wofana for a second, then smiled, accepting it. The two shook hands, then Wofana dispersed the crowd. "Alright, alright, go on, get back to whatever you were doing."
Vixena came up to Foxara, and was about to heal his arm, but Foxara stopped her. "No, not this time. I'll just have it bandaged.." She looked at him for a moment, a little puzzled, but then smiled, realizing this had a special meaning. Wofana looked at the two, smiling, then torn pieces off his shirt, bandaging his and Foxara's arms. "Heh, you two sure are close. I like that. C'mon, I'll show you around the city." He picked up his sword, then what remained of Foxara's sword, then led the two into the city.
They first went to the blacksmith. As they entered, they were greeted by an older looking wolf, covered in black dirt. "Ah, master Wofana. Uh, what are these... foxes... doing here?" Wofana looked at him, and replied, "Here, fix this for them." He hangs the blacksmith Foxara's sword. "B-but, they're foxes..." Wofana gave him a dirty look. "He was able to hold his own in battle against me. They have earned my respect. You are to give them your absolute best service, or you'll have me to answer to!" The smithy looked back at him, shaking a little. "Y-yes, master Wofana. I'll make this sword the best in the kingdom!" He then took it, and started working.
Foxara and Vixena watched the scene, a little bewildered and amused at the same time. A wolf was actually treating them as friends! And it was the most powerful wolf in the city, to boot. The three went outside. "Hey, while we're waiting, I know a great tavern, the best around." Foxara answered back, "No, thanks, we don't drink." Wofana then said, "Heh, neither do I, but they have great food. I bet you're hungry." They accepted the offer. They were getting hungry, and it was after midday.
They followed him to the tavern, where they found a seat rather quickly, the people inside quite willing to offer theirs to them. "Alright! Hey, waitress, get over here. We're hungry!" he called out to her. She came up, taking their order, then delivered it to the chef. "An order from master Wofana." The chef eagerly started to prepare it, holding off on the others. Soon, the waitress came out with their food, Wofana giving her breast a teasing squeeze as she set down their plates. She just winked at him as she walked away.
Foxara started to eat, while looking at Wofana. "Wow, people around here sure are willing to please you. What exactly is your standing here?" Wofana answered, "Heh, I'm the top mercenary in the kingdom. I'm the one called to do the toughest jobs that the others can't. Everyone respects that power, and they also fear it. They know not to mess with me." Foxara looked at him curiously.
"So, I have a question. Why are you treating us like this? We're-" Wofana interrupted him, "What, foxes? Ha, I don't care about that. You're strong, and fearless. The way you fought back there, I could tell you have been training a lot. Also, you could have ran away once we were out of the city, but you didn't. Instead, you faced me, and you also made sure your mate was safe before you fought. I respect that. Now, how about we finish our lunch before it gets cold?" They finished eating, and went back outside.
"Well, then, let's get to the inn and get you a room. C'mon, this way." He led them to the most luxurious hotel in the city. The two foxes gazed in bewilderment. "Um, wow. Are you sure we should stay somewhere this fancy?" Foxara asked, still gazing at the building set before them. "Ha! Don't worry about it! C'mon, lets get you checked in. Everything will be fine!" They walked in, Wofana having a 'talk' with another wolf, and handed Foxara and Vixena their room key. "Don't worry about it, it's on me. Now get your stuff in your room and then I'll show you around town some more."
They went upstairs to their room, setting their stuff down. "Um, Foxara, what do you think of Wofana? I mean, I haven't sensed any bad intentions from him, but..." Foxara looked at her. "Yeah, neither have I, I'm sure he's sincere. But, yeah, I also have a bad feeling, not about him, but something else. Maybe it's the fact that he's the first wolf to ever treat us as equals. I'm sure it'll turn out alright." He takes her, wrapping his arm around her, she wrapping her arm around him in return.
Downstairs, Wofana was waiting. "Heh, hey, guys, what's taking so long? You can make love, later! I still have things to show you!" he shouted up to them. He stood against the wall, smirking at the comment he just made. They came down, standing before Wofana. "Um, sorry. So, where next?" "Heh, well, I'm sure your sword's done by now, lets go see." They went back to the smithy. "Hey, smith! Get over here! Is that sword done, yet?" The smithy hurried over. "Y-yes, master. H-here it is, my best work!" Wofana took it, checking it over to make sure there was no hidden surprises. After he was satisfied, he handed it to Foxara. "Here ya go. That should do ya for a while. Hey, smith! Put it on my tab!" "Y-yes, master!"
Foxara looked over the blade, admiring it. "Wow, this is the best blade I've ever seen ! Thanks!" He sheathed the sword. "Heh, of course, this is the best smith in the country! C'mon, I have one more thing to show you." They went outside, and were walking down the road, when they were approached by a male wolf, looking to be around 25. "Master Wofana, the guild master has another job for you." Wofana replied, "Dang, oh well." He turns to Foxara. "I gotta go, I apparently have a job waiting for me. I could put it off, but where's the fun in that? Later, guys!" They walked off, leaving the two alone. "Well, Vixena, lets go to our room."
That night, a shadowy figure entered through the window, walking towards their bed. He stood over Foxara, wielding a knife, and plunged it towards him. Foxara leaped up and grabbed the assassin's arm. "Grrr, and what are YOU doing? I knew I sensed something!" He pushed the assassin against the wall, the knife falling from his hand, then held his sword to the wolf's throat. "Tell me, who sent you?" The wolf merely replied, "We never reveal our employer's identity." He pushed Foxara enough to get away through the window. Foxara rushed over to check on Vixena, breathing a sigh of relief when he found that she was alright.
"Foxara, who was that? I-I'm scared." He held her close, comforting her. "Don't worry, everything will be alright. I'll find out, don't worry." Using his magic, he placed the knife on the nearby stand, then sealed it behind a barrier. He then sealed the window, as well, making sure no-one else could get in through there. Finally, he sealed the door, as one final precaution. The next morning, they packed up, ready to get out of there. However, they didn't see Wofana. They were told he was still on his job. "Dang, I wanted to say goodbye. Oh, well." They left a message for him, praying it actually reaches him, and headed out, deciding to head for Dragonia next, still wondering who wanted to kill them.
