Chapter #5
Fires raged across the city, billowing out thick columns of acrid smoke into the night sky. Cries and moans ran rampant across the streets as masses of the infect roamed searching for new prey to feast upon, their gashed or gaping wounds putting out odors worse than one could imagine. Bombs laid in wait of their trigger signal as they sat silently attached to support columns of buildings, their trigger lights starting to synchronize as they were armed. The cries of the undead were relentlessly drowned out by the roar of an engine as a truck barreled through the masses towards it's destination. The creature driving bellowed something as his clawed hand gripped the detonator, his canine thumb crushing down the trigger button atop the stick.
Thunder and flashes racked across what was left of the city as carefully laid bombs went off, concrete and steel shattering and tearing as the charges scythed through building supports. Store fronts, apartment buildings, offices, and the like all showered their crumbling masses down against one another to seal off the small area. The heavily armored truck bounced as the mechanical beast leaped from it's back, armored feet skidding for a half a second before they shook the ground at a run. The turret atop the truck swiveled to belch and spew out long tongues of flame onto the infected that moved toward the movement. Brass spewed from the guns mounted to the mechanical monster's arms as lead roared from their barrels to chew through flesh and bone.
The tires of the truck barked and screeched as it slid across the pavement and ruined bodies to dig into the soft dirt surrounding the large parking deck that towered five stories above the street. Fire spewing from the turret atop it for only a moment longer as flames arced out to encircle the entryway to the parking deck. The mechanical monstrosity stood near the flames for a moment as it's guns spat out trails of lead into the moving mass of rotting flesh and blood that moved toward it.
"Mother hen to fox den, we are almost in position. What is your ETA over?" Jill asked calmly into her headset as she sat strapped inside Eve, Jake's massive mechanical battle suit. She turned Eve and could barely feel the suits massive feet thud into the pavement as she watched Jack and Sherry climb out of the truck, Eve's sensors picking out the mass of weapon's they had shouldered.
"Mother hen, this is Fox den. ETA is in twenty, They wouldn't let us leave till we picked up the blasts." Chris said over his headset, watching as the grown moved beneath his chopper. "Be there as soon as we can, over." He just prayed silently now in hopes that they would last until he and his team arrived.
Sherry nodded to Jack as he pointed toward the top deck of the building, shouldering her back pack as she moved toward Jill. "Give me a toss will ya Jill." She said calmly as she focused on her arms and hands, her flesh and bone shifting as she smiled. She jumped up onto the lowered hand of Eve and gave a nod toward Jill's main camera, giving a yell as she felt the mechanical monster hurl her up into the air toward the second floor of the deck. She spun and twirled in the air as she stretched out her clawed hands and feet, barely grunting as she collided with the solid concrete. Her claws digging into the outer wall of the building to make her smile before she started to scale the side, her scaled tail swishing behind her as she moved higher and higher.
Jack walked into the lower deck of the parking garage, his ears twitching every so often as he scanned for any signs of movement. He could feel every heavy step of Eve as Jill walked her up behind him, motioning with his hand to move forward as the torso mounted lights of the suit flickered to life. "Let's get out asses to the roof, and quick." He said into his comm as he flicked on the light for his modified AA12 shotgun, listening to the sound of the belt move against his armored leg as he leveled the weapon.
Jill moved behind Jack with enough space to maneuver Eve if needed, her sensors going off as the horde pushed through the flames. "Move Jack! Move IT!" She bellowed into her comm as the now flaming mass of infected surged forward, reaching out with Eve's mechanical arm to give him a shove forward. She spun Eve on her massive heel and leveled her guns on the first wave, her clawed fingers tugging down on her triggers. "Want something to eat you infected pieces of...." She trailed off as she heard Jack growl, looking at her side screen to see him waving at her and holding another detonator.
"Move your ass Jill!" He said before running for the nearby ramp, his booted feet thudding against the concrete floor as he ran. He could feel Jill turn Eve along with the thundering steps the machine took to follow him, turning his head to watch the flaming mass shuffle and move forward. "Got a surprise for you meat sacks!" He growled as he turned and ran for the next ramp, panting hard from the weight of the body armor.
"How many of those damned things do you have?" Jill asked as she pivoted Eve and took long strides in the powered suit to keep up with Jack. Neither she nor Jack were prepared to hear the massive roar of the anti-materiel rifle Sherry had carried with her to the roof. "Damn that makes a big boom." Jill said as she watched Jack finally stop running on the ramp up to the third deck, her eyes growing large as she watched his raise up the arm with the detonator.
"Boom." Was all Jack said before pushing the detonator with his thumb, causing the c-4 charges inside the rhino to go off. The parking garage shuddered some as shrapnel, flames, and some left over rounds set off right beside it's entrance. He gave Jill a childish grin of glee, before he turned to start running up the ramps again.
Sherry tried to make her choices well, racking in a fresh round into her rifle as she looked through the night vision scope at the mass of moving flesh. She squeezed off another shot and yelled out as a group of mutated lickers climbed up and over the side of the top deck. She leaped back as one lashed out with it's claws, turning on her heel to run for the other side of the building. The katanas at her hips screeched against their sheathes as she tore them free, her clawed feet digging into the ledge of the roof. "Come on boys....come earn your next meal." She growled out as her eyes turned crimson, flesh altering all the way up to her chin as she stepped back over the edge. Her clawed feet dug into the concrete as she leaned back and stood horizontal, slicing at the tongue of a licker that had lunged for her. She kept stepping back as she listened to the surprised scream of the creature as it fell to it's death, her clawed hands starting to spin her blades around her body. "We got friends on the roof....and their manners suck." She said into her comm as she dropped from the side of the building to the 4th level's ledge, leaping up to catch her claws in the ceiling and pull her legs up.
Jack was panting hard as he caught sight of movement on the 4th deck, turning his head to see Sherry standing on the ceiling. He had to quickly turn his attention away from her as a mutation leaped for him, his shotgun chugging out a spray of buckshot as he fell backwards. "Jill move the cars so that it funnels them on the top deck, me and Sherry will slow them down..." He said hastily into his comm as he got to his feet.
Poor Jill still hadn't seen Sherry back pedaling along the ceiling, looking at her side screen in near disbelief as she turned Eve on her heal. "Let's get up there then Eve." Jill said as she worked her controls and made Eve thunder across the parking deck, slamming out a gun toting arm to crush a licker that had strayed too close to the thundering machine. "Eve, what is Chris's eta now?"
A soft sigh and then a young woman wearing only fig leaves appeared on a side screen, flinging her hand up so that a timer appeared. "Tracking the helicopters position on the facility's radar, eta is fifteen minutes." The young woman glared at her in the screen as Jill worked her controls to steady her, Eve's clamp hands reaching out to pick up a Prius and slam it down as a starting mark. "I wish father had allowed me to run myself....you are giving my gyro's a workout that will require maintenance...."
"Kiss my ass Eve, this is only my second time piloting you..." Jill trailed off as she kicked another car behind the Prius, pausing for a moment as she thought about what Eve said. "What do you mean Father?"
Eve froze for a moment as the screen blinked. "Sorry father...Jill just get back to work or I'll eject you into the horde if he dies..." And with that Eve disappeared from the screen and was replaced by another camera view, causing Jill to growl in frustration.
Sherri walked along the ceiling in almost a dance as she slashed at her attackers, almost shrieking as Jack walked a line of destruction across the lickers with his modified AA12. "Thanks Jack..." She sheathed her dual katanas and drew her twin high capacity Glock 45's, taking aim at heads below her. "There's too many of them...."
Jack backed toward the ramp slowly and sent out bursts of buckshot into the oncoming horde, cringing some as he heard Sherri above him. "Don't talk like that, get your ass moving Sherri!" He saw her nod out of the corner of his eye and growled as his feet touched the ramp behind him. "Drop and go...." He said as he leveled his AA12 at head level for most of the coming mass, feeling hot brass falling from above him as Sherri moved to drop down behind him.
Sherri dropped down from the ceiling and dug her claws into the ramp as she landed, dropping the spent clips from her pistols to slap in fresh ones. Her head turned toward Jack as he tugged and held the trigger down on his AA12, the spray of lead tearing through the horde. Her eye's locking on the exoskeleton, watching as Jill used it to make a barricade out of vehicles. "We need to get up to the top deck!" She yelled over the gunfire, before turning and bolting up to the top level.
Chris almost couldn't believe his eyes as the loading ramp landed on the garage roof, he's never seen this many rot bags slaughtered in one place. "Quickly, get aboard!" He yelled as the other transport landed. Anti-virus laced chemical hoses blasted the trio as the climbed into the chopper, causing all three to bristle some. "Sorry, new regulations added just for your three....and lets face it you were all covered in blood.
Jack grumbled as he pushed on his earpiece. "Eve mount transport two for evac, two minutes until detonation." He smiled as he pulled a timer from inside his vest and flipped the switch, before tossing it onto the parking garage deck. "You of all people can understand my wanting that place to be ash, Jill has told me of some of the places you two have been."
Chris nodded to the pilot, before turning to the new team. "Time to get you all out of here and back to base for debriefing.
"Six Months Later"
Jack grumbled as he stumbled his way to the phone in their shared quarters, especially after their last clean up job they'd had to do. He snatched up the phone and yawned heavily. "uh, Hello?"
There was a scarily familiar laugh on the other end of the line, then Jack recognized it. "Hello little brother, I must be quick. The video you saw was false, but you have more urgent matters about to come to hand." Eric said calmly. "My agents tell me that they started to pump fuel through that city's hub lines again, that oil is highly infected."
"What do you mean infected? I was told the entire place was purged!"
"They didn't clean the lines out, big business types never like to loose money little brother. It's already to late to stop it or contain it, I only got this news today." Eric growled oddly. "I've got to go, another one is waking up. I'll come to you as soon as I can...just survive." The line went dead
Jack moved back to the bed and shook the girls awake. "I've got good news and bad news girls, and this isn't the normal shit." He watched as they looked at one another and then back to him. "Good news is my brother is alive, bad news is we're about to have one hell of a bad outbreak....they didn't flush the oil lines properly."
