What once Was... Chapter 7
*********WARNING!!! This story is intended for MATURE and RESPONSIBLE ADULTS ONLY*********
Throughout the night, the fox tosses and turns trying to sleep. He keeps having nightmares and thoughts of his indecision on deciding if he should be with Joey or Valerie. He also is having nightmares of his ex he just left last week. All the potential issues keep his mind occupied. He weights all the pros and cons of each situation in his mind hoping that would resolve his restless night in bed. He considers being with Joey because he's nice, great and probably someone he could fall in love with. On the flip side, he's a guy and isn't sure of the possible implications resulting from a gay relationship with the fennec. He then considers a relationship with Valerie, of course she and he both tease each other on the webcam and she is also a fox. He feels she's a great companion to spend time with as well. The downside to that decision is he could hurt Joey's feelings and possibly a friendship.
He gets up out of bed and sees that it's only 1:30 AM. He goes to the bathroom and grabs a cup of water to drink. He looks in the mirror at himself starting at his face thinking about where he wants to proceed in life. The fox doesn't like to be alone so he knows he has to make a decision soon to prevent that. He's at the age where having a companion is fairly important to him. Hormones do control the fox's emotions from time to time, but generally only in fits of rage or when he has to take care of his sexual needs and urges.
He walks back to the bed and notices his phone is lit. He sees it's a text message and it is from Joey. He reads it, "hey I cant sleep because im thinking of u just wanted to share with u". He smiles and replies, "same here but I will try to go to bed now thank u". He then puts the phone down and grabs his fox plushie. He then closes his eyes smiling hoping to catch some sleep before he has to wake back up for school. With the last comment, his mind settles down and he feels warm knowing that his decision could be much easier.
Few hours later, December by Collective Soul starts to play on his alarm clock. That song usually plays at the same time most mornings on DVE. The Fox loves that song because of the intro. He awakens with a smile while stretching. Looking out the open window, he sees the sun starting to crack the horizon. Getting out of bed, he grabs his clothes and heads down stairs for his morning shower and wakes his mother up for work.
He makes quick use of the shower since he knows not to take too much time or else he could miss the weather on the news. He gets out after his shower to cook his breakfast. He then starts the stove up to heat the pan with cooking oil. Going into the fridge, he pulls out cheese and eggs, and then pops toast in the toaster. The fox loves cooking breakfast, especially when he makes his famous egg sandwiches. He finishes cooking and sits down to watch the morning news, just in time for the weather. Once the weather is done, he finishes his breakfast, cleans up and then packs up to leave. Grabbing his keys, he bids his mother farewell for now and takes off for school.
He arrives early as usual and goes to his usual waiting spot at the end of the hallway. He pulls out his phone to check for messages and sees he already has two, one from Joey and one from Joey 3. He pulls up Joey 3 first and it says, "rc let me know whats up with things, you seem quiet" then reads the one from Joey, "morning fox I hope you slept better hit me up if u wanna hang sometime this week?" R.C. replies back, "yeah maybe this week again?". The fox stands and waits to be let in the halls to begin his day of school.
Once the morning bell sounds, he makes his way to his locker to start the day. Interestingly enough, the fox immediately become introverted and slips into the folks without notice. Most of the morning went uneventful, although a couple students decided to harass R.C. a little about his appearance and one even claimed that he saw the fox at Renzie Park last night. R.C. denies this when the two brown bears corner him in the hall in between classes. They are the quite popular in the school and usually throw ravish parties every so often that then invite almost the entire school to. R.C. never goes to these.
"So fox, you never come to anything we throw, so what's your deal?" Reggie says to the fox as he stands there just staring back.
"Yeah, why don't you come to our parties, raver fox? Busy hanging with your gay friends again?" says Jim while lightly punching R.C. "or are you a fag like they are?"
R.C. looks back at the two, "No? What would make you two think that? I just don't have time to go to the parties and why would I be a fag?"
Reggie smirks, "I saw you last night at Renzie Park dude, and you were with some guy walking."
"And based on that I'm a fag, huh? Whatever..." R.C. shrugs and starts to walk away.
"Yeah, I think that. You're weird and you never have a girlfriend that we ever see." Reggie adds.
"What does that have to do with it? He's a friend I met and like to hang out with? Are you two friends and hang out a lot?" the fox cleverly asks.
The two bears exchange glances, "Well I guess you have a point, but we'll still keep our eye on you fox." Quips Jim.
"What for? You two have each other, that's fair game!" R.C. grins back.
"You're an ass, you're lucky you're playing basketball this year otherwise I'd have to beat your ass for even thinking that we're fags." Reggie sternly replied. "Watch your back, fox."
R.C. shakes his head and reports to his next class right down the hall just in time. R.C. thinks in his head, "Well...this sucks. They saw me and that was something I wanted to avoid. I really hope I can figure something out." He then attends his remaining classes and waits for lunch time as he's getting hungry.
The rest of the day goes fairly decent for the fox, just the routing classes and boring lectures he endures most of the time. At the end of the day at 2:30, the final bell sounds releasing the mass of students to their appropriate transportation. R.C. walks out to his car. He pulls out his phone and checks it for messages. As he does, he gets a phone call. Answering it, it's the manager of the club where Groove is held asking if the fox can come in now for the interview. He agrees and then calls his mother to tell her the news.
The fox makes it to his car and starts to make his way to Oakland while using back route as the main roads are likely tied up as usual. Moments later, he pulls in the parking garage and parks his car. He then grabs his phone and texts his friends about his potential job he may have as this will help secure a spot for future events that they have planned. He excitedly hops down the stairwell and makes his way to the crosswalk of Forbes Ave. Waiting for the light; he looks up at the big vertical banner that dresses the side of the Strand Building which signifies the name of the club: Laga. He makes his way across and into the building's main lobby towards the staircase. Eyeing the staircase, he eagerly approaches and makes his way up to the 3rd floor offices where the manager is located. He knocks on the door and enters the office. It appears this fox may have a chance at an early career.
Moments later the fox leaves the office with a huge grin on his face. He has gotten the position and learned of the wonderful pay he will be getting. He flies down the staircase and immediately calls his mother of the news. He rushes to the crosswalk and almost forgets to look. Fortunately, the road is clear since the main light is red. The fox rushes to the garage while texting his friends and colleagues the news of joy which will bring upon further opportunities. He gets in his car and starts to exit the garage. He exits and starts to make his way back home to catch up on school work from the day.
Later on, he gets home and greets his mother who is quite excited about his own son's new position. The two then talk over dinner about what this could lead to with his career aspirations. In the conversation, the topic of having a girlfriend comes up. The fox slightly lowers his ears. His mother notices and then asks, "I take you're not doing well in that department?"
"No, not really." The fox says looking at her. "It's just a mess most of the time. They always get so excited, and then just die out like I become like the wall."
"Well, you know you have your life ahead of you to date anyone. You should focus more on your school work and future first." She replies. "Yeah, may be fun to date, but don't let it interfere with your life right now."
"Yeah, I guess so. I'm trying to make some friends at least." R.C. replies.
"Well, that's a good thing. Just so you remember I hear things in school about you sometimes." His mother jumped in.
"Yeah?" R.C. looks back puzzled. "What did you hear now?"
His mother looks at him, "Some bear came up to me and asked if you were dating a boy. Are you?"
R.C. looks back at his mother, slightly taken aback at the last statement. "What? Um where did that come from?"
"I don't know, but sometimes these kids make up stuff. I do want to know from you actually. I won't yell at you." She looks at him knowing the fox is hiding something.
R.C. looks back scared, "No mom, I'm not really. I'm just meeting new friends."
"R.C., I know you're always for trying stuff. Listen to me carefully, if you even date a boy. You better know the potential issues you could face." His mother looks at him with concern. "I could care less as long as you are happy and don't mess up your life. I just don't want to see you get hurt, that's all."
R.C. nods softly and finishes up dinner. "Thanks mom, I'll do my best." He takes the dishes in the kitchen and cleans them. After he cleans up, he head up to complete a couple assignments and then turns his PC on. He logs into AIM and starts to talk to a few of his friends. He notices Joey is on and hesitates a few moments before clicking on his name to open a chat session. He sees a few other friends online, but chooses to ignore them for now. As he looks at the open chat window, Joey messages him on it before he even gets a chance to start the conversation.
Skykid: RC you got the job I heard! Im happy for you. RC: Hey you, yes I got the job. It's a good thing because I can get inside deals on bigger things. Skykid: oh that's nice what are you looking to do? RC: The twins want to rent out the complex on all floors for an event called Mystic Motion. Feature several floors of music and just awesome Skykid: that's awesome and they really gonna do that? RC: Well, when we had the production meeting a month ago, we talked about that being a possible plan for the Saturday event maybe early next year or something Skykid: dude that would be crazy! RC: IKR! Im all for it! it would be a crazy night! Just think 3 floors and the outdoor balcony? Skykid: Wait, there's a balcony? RC: Yeah, from the 3rd floor above the one building next to it, crazy!
The two keep going on about a couple events for a while until another window pops open from Valerie. The fox takes a pause a moment to realize that he has a decision to make still. He then greets her back.
RC: Hey there Val: so you wanna go out sometime? RC: I dunno really, been quite busy and got a new job Val: well that's nice maybe you can buy me dinner soon RC: Haha you're pushing it a bit Val: only trying to suggest RC: Yeah, well suggesting things, sounds like you wanted to marry me or something Val: maybe I'm trying to get that from you RC: we haven't even dated yet, jeesh calm down! Val: well take the first step foxy when we gonna go out? RC: I don't know yet! Val: whats wrong with you? You never want to see me ever RC: I've been busy Val: did you get another girlfriend or what? You just blow me off like it's some game RC: It's not a game, I just don't want to be with anyone right now Val: you lie theres someone else you're chasing just like before. RC I seen this from you and been quite patient with you RC: No one told you to wait for me. Val: Well fine then be that way, ill just go find someone else who wants me RC: Ok fine bye
R.C. closes the window and curses under his breath, "Typical girls, so damn moody." He then clicks on Joey's window and begins to type:
RC: Joey, do you ever have a desire to want someone? Skykid: Yes? Why you ask me? RC: Because some girl I fool around with now wants me to go out with them, I don't want to Skykid: Oh...well why don't you want to? RC: I have other things on my mind. Skykid: Like what if I may ask? RC: Well, this new job really is important to me Skykid: oh yeah it would be. Hey are you free? RC: Um sure? Skykid: Can you come over and see me? RC: Ok can you give me 10-15 min and my mom should let me Skykid: Ok I have to ask you something in person RC: Ok then
He looks at the clock and sees it is only 6:30 PM so he has time to go. He heads downstairs and tells his mother he's out to visit a friend across the river. His mother approves and the fox takes off towards McKeesport once again.
Later he comes up the street and parks outside. He's about to leave the car to walk to the house, but the fennec comes rushing out quickly to the car. R.C. unlocks the side door to let the fennec in. As he jumps in he looks at R.C. and looks forward. "um, just drive please." He says to the fox.
"ok?" The fox asks while pulling away towards the main road.
"R.C. I don't know what do think, I wanted to see you because...I well it's complicated." The fennec says looking down at his paws as he rubs them together nervously.
"Well, you can tell me anything dude, I'm here to help at least. Isn't that what a good friend does?" R.C. says trying to calm the fennec down a bit.
"It's not that easy to figure this out. You see I really like someone a lot, but they're very hard to figure out." Joey explains. "I wish they would open up or something."
R.C. quickly realizes that Joey is talking about himself. He thinks deeply for a moment as Joey keeps talking and then realized he should do something about it to quell the poor fennec down. He comes up on the intersection of Rt 48 and makes the left. He comes up to the free standing car wash station and pulls in.
"What are you doing?" Asks the fennec.
"I uh have something hanging from my rear bumper here I need to fix, it's annoying me." R.C. says pulling into an open stall. He then shuts the car off.
"Why did you shut off the car?" Joey asks.
R.C. sits there for a few seconds staring out the window and then turns to the fennec looking at him. "I have one question to ask you Joey." He says.
Joey opens his maw to answer, but R.C. immediately moves his head and meets Joey on the lips to kiss him. The two kiss for a brief moment and then break leaving Joey stunned.
"I knew you were talking about me there so I figured I'd open up in a manner of speaking." R.C. quickly says. "and I still have to ask you something."
"Oh my god R.C." Joey enthusiastically replies, "Please ask!"
"Do you want to go out with me?" R.C. blurts out "as your boyfriend?" He then becomes nervous awaiting the response of the fennec.
"R.C. I really don't know what to say?" Joey replies.
"It's ok, I kind of just got the moment going here." The fox looks back and looks around. "I just guess I should give it a shot or something."
"Well, fox, you did get me on that one. Well to answer your question...give me a moment to think." The fennec thinks and looks out the window at the hose.
The two foxes stare out the window at the walls and think about what it would be like to spend time together as well as the ups and downs of the relationship they could possibly begin.
