Death of a friend

"I, Arthur Kiles hereby resign as Unova's League Champion," a young boy of thirteen said in front of millions of people that filled stadium. Silence filled the arena for what seemed like an eternity, as the teen allowed his words sink into effect. Arthur turned to leave for the stadium entrance only to be stopped by a shout from his opponent.

"Why?" shouted the now former champion's opponent. Rage filled the eyes of the wild haired trainer as he stood with a young Larvesta

"You already know the reason Alder," Arthur tiredly replied as he regarded the far too young fire type.

That fateful day was over two years ago for the former champion. Now Arthur sat atop a rocky shelf overlooking a natural amphitheater-like cave. In the center stood a man giving a speech about Pokémon liberation to thousands of followers. Arthur had heard the speech before from other speakers but he could tell that this man was lying, and that very thought made the teen's blood boil.

The brown haired trainer pressed a button on his throat mic and called out to another member of his team. "Captain, pulse your aura a few times so I can see where you're at."

Arthur closed his eyes and allowed the aura of the room to fill his senses. The whole room fell dark as thousands of flames of varying shades filled in place of the inhabitances. Away from the crowd of little flickering lights pulsed a tiny flame that belonged to a Lucario. Arthur opened his eyes to abandon the aura sight to see his Pokémon's position nestled in a darkened crag close to the back of the cave.

"Are you getting a good feed Captain?" Arthur asked

A short grunt issued itself across the radio. The trainer understood the confirmation from the Lucario even though he didn't fully understand what the steel type said. He reached for his own camcorder that remained perched upon a nearby bolder and adjusted the zoom to better record the man speaking. Arthur knew this budding group was called Team Plasma and while they posed to liberate and free Pokémon he knew their motives were far more sinister. For the sake of the entire Unova region, the ex-champion was gathering evidence to stop them from turning into a threat like team Rocket. So far all he managed to get a hold of was a few speeches and a private conversation the man had with one of his subordinates.

"... and so my friends we have our salvation," the man's voice echoed in the cave as a young greened haired teenager was ushered to his side. "When this lad comes of age he will lead us to true Pokémon liberation."

Arthur waited for the man to make his exit before issuing a command through his radio, "Captain, I think we have all that we need to put that man behind bars. Let's get going before we're ..."

~Arthur we've been discovered! ~ Arthur heard within his mind interrupting his train of thought.

Arthur grabbed the camera and turned to an orange and cream colored fairy-like creature hovering behind him.

"What, how?" Arthur asked after taking a few seconds to comprehend the news.

~I'm not sure, but they are on their way here, ~ The Victini responded as she wrung her hands in worry. Her trainer quickly stuffed the camera into one of the many pockets of his long coat before he touched his hidden mic.

"Captain, get over here now!" Arthur ordered before he made a break for the tunnel that led him up to the shelf.

"Bisharp, Slash," cut a cold voice.

Arthur felt himself being pulled back by a powerful psychic force as a near invisible attack cut through the front of his coat. Overbalanced, Arthur fell onto his back as the Bisharp that attacked him advanced.

"Nicole, flame..." Arthur managed to say before a ball of fire that was much larger than the attack he had in mind sailed over head. He threw his arms up to shield his face from the Searing Shot, Nicole's signature move next to her V-create. The ball of fire erupted upon the stupefied Bisharp and blasted the Pokémon back into the wall unconscious. Flames licked at the coat Arthur wore as he shielded himself from the brunt of the spell the thick fabric repelling the flash of fire.

"Damn it Nicole, I was too close for that one," Arthur yelled as he patted his still smoking sleeves with gloved hands.

~It would not have fainted with a Flame Burst and you would have had to dodge another slash whilst on your back, ~ she responded

Arthur returned to his feet to see the Bisharp had indeed been defeated in one shot. The brown haired teen turned back to the exit to see the owner of the defeated Bisharp standing between him and the exit to the tunnel. The man that faced Arthur was easily a head taller than he was and garbed in a black body suit while mask covered the lower half of his face.

"Nicole is this..." Arthur began.

"Yes I was the one who detected you," The ninja coldly interjected, "your Lucario is being dealt with, but if you turn over your Victini you might be allowed to leave with your life."

"Don't you touch Nicole," Arthur growled as he pressed the button on his belt. In a flash of light the his remaining two Pokémon materialized upon the shelf; a Floatzel named Link, and a Glaceon named Jack. The ninja responded with the summoning of a pair of Lieperds.

"Both of you use Night slash!" the man commanded.

"Jack, Link intercept the Lieperds with protect, Nicole Searing Shot," Arthur countered. The Glaceon and Flotzal raised green barriers to block the movement of the Lieperds while Nicole charged the same attack she used on the Bisharp. The Victini's fury easily matching Arthur's as she loosed the oversized fireball. As the smoke cleared both cats looked a little worse for wear but still stood. The barriers Jack and Link raised held up against the blast of the fire ball negated any damage it might have caused.

"Jack, use Ice Shard, Link, use Aqua jet, finish them," Arthur quickly added before the man could issue a command. The Lieperds cowered before the attacks knowing they lost, but Jack and Link withheld as much power as they could so as they won't kill the helpless Pokémon. They were strong, but not vicious. Arthur's attention was drawn to a nearby pained screech as a Goldbat flew backwards; propelled by a massive ball of energy. Seconds later the Lucario that launched the aura sphere leapt onto the shelf next to Arthur.

"I hope you didn't have too much trouble getting up here Captain," The teen grimly assessed as two more ninjas appeared upon the shelf behind his group. Arthur's Pokémon surrounded their trainer to protect him from the opposing ninjas. The two new ninja summoned forth another Bisharp and an Escavalier while the final ninja brought forth his last pokeball and summoned a Hydreigon.

Arthur smirked when he saw the Hydreigon. "Link, Ice fang, Jack Ice beam, drop that dragon. Captain use close combat on the Bisharp, Nicole use flame burst on the bug."

The sea weasel bravely dash forward and latched to one of the Hydreigon's heads while Jack fired a potent beam of cold at its belly. The two Pokémon withheld nothing for they knew the danger if they left the brutal Pokémon unchallanged. Captain charged with a snarl at the Bisharp, and released a whirlwind of punches upon his opponent. Nicole narrowed her eyes as she stared down the armored bug as she readied a pair of fire balls in each hand. The battle however took a turn for the worst for Arthur's team. The Hydreigon took both of the ice attacks in stride as blue berry juice dripped from its teeth, a Yache berry. The Bisharp managed to hang on with a focus sash and slipped in a few vicious attacks in before it fell to a second onslaught of punches from the Lucario. Captain staggered back from the fainted Bisharp as blood oozed from the deep cuts to his torso. The Escavalier cowered behind a barrier to ward off the bursting fire, but Nicole maintained the barrage until the barricade shattered. Red hot fire scorched the stolen armor of the bug until it fell to the onslaught. The Hydreigon gripped its weasel assailant by the waist, and ripped him from the head he latched onto. With a savage roar the brutal Pokémon flung the Floatzel into the far wall, where Link fell into a crumpled heap.

"Link!" Arthur called out but the Floatzal didn't stir, "Jack, use blizzard!"

The Glaceon summoned up a torrent of ice and snow standing defiant before the dragon. The Hydreigon cloaked its self in fire a low rumble issued from its throat. Fire met ice in a burst of steam but as the Glaceon recovered from the excursion of the attack the Hydreigon's jaws suddenly snapped onto Jack's leg in a powerful crunch. The ice type flailed franticly to keep the other heads from finding purchase upon his pale blue body. Brilliant light shone from Jack's body as he charged his strongest attack as the Hydreigon shook its head viciously. Its heads pummeled the ice type to get prevent him from releasing the Shear Cold, but dragon slowly froze as Jack released waves of cold from his body. Arthur looked on in horror as Jack's leg gave away from his battered body. The trainer rushed forward and caught the Glaceon in his arms. Dark blood stained the teen's white coat as he returned the ice type, but Arthur knew that the ball would lock Jack into stasis to keep him from bleeding out.

"Nicole, clear the path we've tarried here long enough," Arthur growled as he charged for the exit. The ninja was about to move to intercept but Nicole slammed him into the ground with telekanisis. Arthur's heart dropped as he reached the unmoving Flotzel's side. The trainer feared the worst until Link grimaced when he touched the sea weasel's side. Nicole glared at the two remaining ninjas and dared them to move as her hand became enveloped in fire. The ninjas tried to give pursuit when a deafening boom sounded as a pillar of fire erupted from the ground. The wall of fire held the ninja garbed trainers at bay as her trainer saw to her teammate.

"Captain, can you make it?" Arthur asked as he returned Link to his ball. The Lucario nodded as it used Pulse Heal on one of its more severe wounds.

"Okay let's go," Arthur nodded as he turned to dash down the tunnel his two Pokémon close behind.

"Captain, collapse the tunnel," Arthur ordered as soon as the three of them where clear. Captain fired an aura sphere into the ceiling of the tunnel and shattered the rock. The broken ceiling crashed down into the hall, and left the passage to the overlook sealed off. Arthur tore off down another passage confident in his knowledge of the cave system. After several twists and turns the group finally rounded a corner to see the exit to the cave where daylight streamed in from outside.

Arthur panted as he leaned into the passage wall. He looked to Nicole to see that she was starting to tire, but he knew full well that she had enough energy to floor a Dragonite. Captain however had started to lag behind as his wounds started to take their toll. Arthur pulled a hyper potion from one of his many pockets and set to work on the Lucario. The potion took effect almost immediately as it knitted the gashes on Captain's chest.

~Arthur hurry up, ~ Nicole warned.

"Just a minute I'm almost done," Arthur responded as he pulled out another potion.

An Explosion rocked overhead as a Focus Blast smashed into the ceiling above the trio. Nicole returned with a volley of Flame Bursts and Searing Shots at the approaching figures. Arthur returned his attention back to Captain to see that the second potion bottle was now drained but the Lucario was still short of breath. The trainer looked the steel type over but he didn't find anything until Captain suddenly coughed up blood.

"Pierced lung," Arthur assessed before he reached for Captain's ball. The trainer paused when he felt a tiny pebble strike his head. Arthur looked up to the source of the pebble to see the damage caused by the focus blast. The opposing Pokémon at the end of the tunnel launched a retuned volley of dark pulses but the Victini. Arthur could barely contain his blush as he watch in awe as he watched his second oldest friend work her magic, but as Nicole started charge a Searing Shot a sizable rock struck him in his shoulder. The trainer howled in pain as he was knocked to the ground and away from Captain.

"Tini!" Nicole screamed before a Hyper Beam blasted her in the chest. The blast knocked her clear of the cave-in. Captain reacted on instinct as he grabbed the trainer and tossed him before he was buried under the heavy rock. Arthur watched horrified as his friend was buried by the rock slide. He scrambled to his feet despite the pain in his shoulder but before he could place himself back into danger a telekinetic force stopped him.

"Captain!" Arthur yelled as he fought the invisible force the held him, "Nicole let me go, I have to help him!"

~You can't save him Arthur he's... he's gone Arthur, I'm sorry but he's gone, ~ The Victini pleaded. The tiny fire type was just as sadden by the loss of Captain, but she knew the celling was still unstable after the collapse. Tears burned in Arthur's eyes as he continued to fight but Nicole held him firm.

~Arthur we need to get Jack and Link to a Pokecenter or they will die, ~ Nicole urged as tears starting to well up in her impossible blue eyes. the brown haired teen finally relaxed as the truth sunk in the. Stasis feature on pokeballs were still new and eventually the internal cell will run out after a day of hard stasis. Fortunately the nearest town was only a few hours away, but first Arthur needed to tend to injuries he and Nicole sustained. Arthur looked over his tiny friend as he applied a hyper potion to her injuries. Several minutes passed until he couldn't find any more injures on the diminutive fairy.

"That hyper beam did a number on you but it didn't do anything too long lasting," Arthur assessed once he got don. The trainer knew that Nicole was tough but he still worried since Victinis are not indestructible. He winced from the pain as he carefully removed his coat and shirt. The Victini's stomach churned from the sight of the badly bruised and severally swollen shoulder. She reluctantly floated around her trainer so she could better assess the damage caused by the boulder.

~Arthur, this will hurt... a lot, ~ Nicole choked as she gripped his shoulder with her telekinetic powers.

"How bad... Gah!" Arthur howled as bones were set back into proper order.

~Broken collar bone, and dislocated shoulder, ~ she monotone as Arthur clinched from the pain. ~ I'll have to immobilize your arm. ~

The Victini sifted through the pockets the teen's bloodstained coat until she found what she was looking for. She returned to Arthur with a large roll of tape and cloth bindings.

~ Arthur, I can't pin your arm with you hunched over like that, ~ the fire type sighed.

The brown haired youth slowly nodded as he forced his body to relax so Nicole could work. Arthur grimaced when the Victini gently touched his injured shoulder but he remained still. Once Nicole finished she floated away to hide her tears from the pain wracked trainer.

"Thank you Nicole," Arthur said weakly as he retrieved his coat, using more will than stamina to move. The wary trainer looked to the Victini to see her tiny form shudder as she softly sobbed into her hands. Slowly the weary trainer moved to the crying Pokémon and pulled her into a gentle hug. Nicole continued to cry into Arthur's shoulder as he made his way east toward Striaton City. A distant boom of thunder herald a slow steady rainfall as the teen openly wept in sorrow. A few hours later the couple arrived at the Pokecenter of Striaton City. Nicole had long since fallen asleep in the teen's arms. The young trainer slowly walked up to the counter; his appearance of a blood stained coat and bound arm startled many of the patrons. Arthur placed the two stasis balls on the counter before he started to pass out. Nicole woke as her trainer fell.

"Tini!" was all Arthur heard as he faded into darkness.

Wow I published this chapter in 8/14/2013 this a very long time ago and oh man the errors... name repeats, mixed tensed and run-on sentences. Ha ha yeah I was very inexperienced back then. Anyway thank you all both new and returning fans for all the support.
