Nizhoni's Way
Chapter 30
Tala awoke in the middle of the night to find King Eyrrothaz had gone. She was alone in his bed, alone with the stars twinkling like diamonds in the high arched windows. She knew it was her chance to finally see and interrogate Nizhoni, who the king had said was in the palace dungeons, deep beneath the lake.
Tala rose, and pulling on the long white skirt and criss-crossing top she had been given, she found two warriors in the hall and ordered that they take her to the dungeon. She was not the least bit surprised when they obeyed her without question.
In the weeks that she had lived with them in the palace, their idolization of her had become intense, to the point that an eager servant was always in her face with a drink and a smile. Servants were always trying to get her to fuck them, though she flatly refused. A horny mare tripped and fell in her lap once and leaked her juices on Tala's thigh. Tala knew she had done it on purpose and cursed when her cock almost got hard. The mares were shameless, though servants like Vellax showed more restraint. They dropped to their knees before her, bowed and prostrated, kissed her feet, and called her Exalted One, Most Beauteous One, Two Spirit, Being of Perfection. All of it was very flattering at first, but after a while it just became . . . annoying.
"Here is the cell, Being of Perfection," said one of the warriors who had accompanied Tala.
They passed many barred cells, all of which were empty, and Tala had to wonder why Nizhoni had not simply been put in the first one. Perhaps they kept her away from the door because they feared she would manage to escape. Tala couldn't see how: Nizhoni had lost her magic and - according to King Eyrrothaz - so long as she stayed in Vi'sune, it was not coming back.
Tala faced Nizhoni's cell. The vixen was inside, huddled on a narrow bed in a corner with her knees drawn up. She was hugging her knees and looked small and pathetic. Tala quickly noted that she had not been harmed, nor was she filthy or thin. They were bathing her and feeding her well . . . and probably groping her too. She didn't raise her face when Tala stood before her, just stared at the floor. Her face was expressionless.
"Leave us," Tala said quietly.
"We shall wait at the door, Most Exalted One . . ."
"_Beau_teous Exalted One . . ."
Tala rolled her eyes as the warriors backed away, bowing, their paws on their hearts as the clopping of their hooves echoed up the corridor.
"At least one of us is enjoying our stay," Nizhoni said when the unicorns had gone.
Tala's face darkened. "You've got a lot of spite for the one who did all the lying and manipulating."
Nizhoni lowered her lashes. "I had my reasons."
"Kindly tell me what those reasons were," Tala said darkly. "I have a right to know why my husband's life was put at stake!" She tried to keep the shriek from her voice but failed.
Nizhoni winced and her lip trembled. "I couldn't . . . trust you. You wouldn't have helped me."
"Perhaps I would have," Tala said calmly.
Nizhoni looked up to hear the soft note in her voice. She smiled, and Tala knew she was thinking of Seleste. "Perhaps you would have." She lowered her feet to the floor and leaned forward. "Will you help me now?"
"No," Tala replied at once.
Nizhoni laughed and shook her head, as if she should have guessed. "You've got Seleste's warm heart, but Keme's cold tendency to hold a grudge once that heart is hurt." She looked away. "What did you come here for then?"
"Your reasons."
"Ah." Nizhoni swallowed hard. "Aayan and I . . ." She grimaced. "Had a child."
Tala stiffened.
"I found out . . ." Nizhoni rose and began to pace. ". . . that there was a conspiracy to murder the king and queen. They had helped the frost wolves. The council was angry. The frost wolves were two steps away from being freed because of King Sylander and Queen Wynonna. The council wanted blood. After, they were going to lie to Aayan. All of it was going to look like an accident, and they needed Aayan to think so."
Tala folded her arms. "And how did you find this out?"
Nizhoni shook her head. "I lived in the palace, Tala! I was royal nursemaid! I did my part to protect Li - to protect my husband and his family! I eavesdropped at doors and windows. I came to the mansions of the council members on the pretense of delivering packages. It was easy. No one ever suspected the royal nursemaid." She sneered. "Who everyone deemed such a fool. Nothing but a big pair of tits!"
Tala cleared her throat uncomfortably when Nizhoni's big milkers knocked softly. "Go on, please."
Nizhoni began to pace again. "I realized the only way to save Aayan was to join the conspiracy --"
"Aayan? What about his parents!"
"Just hear me out!" Nizhoni halted and looked at her. "Please, Tala. Just . . ."
"Fine!" Tala said more loudly than she'd meant to. "I'm . . . I'm listening." She swallowed hard and folded her arms again.
"So I joined the conspiracy," Nizhoni went on, glancing at Tala nervously.
Tala snorted. The vixen probably thought she was going to snap her neck. It was certainly tempting.
"I told them there was a better way to control the situation. Aayan was growing into his power and could not easily be harmed. But if Aayan had a child . . . the council could use it to make his parents do as they wished. A little threat here and there, and the king and queen would do exactly as commanded."
Tala's nostrils flared. "You disgust me."
"Tch! As if the king and queen are the real rulers of Miras Eii!" Nizhoni said defiantly. "Do you really think King Sylander - who grew up among mortals - knows the first thing about ruling his own? No! The council is in control! They always have been! Unfortunately for the king, he forgot this lesson. His wife never learned it. And it almost meant their deaths! My way was better," she went on with a toss of her paw, "than letting the council kill Aayan's parents! Because I was already living in the palace and had the trust of the royal family, the council commanded me to get with his child as soon as he was old enough. Aayan grew into a teenage boy, and I began to . . . anticipate what I must do."
Tala's jaw stood out hard in her anger. "So you had this child," she said loudly, angrily, not wanting to hear anymore about Nizhoni's desires, "and then what? Where is the child? Why lie to me to get here?" Thinking of Yatokya, her throat tightened.
"I . . ." Nizhoni fiddled with her fingers. "I backed out. I couldn't go through with the council's plan. The queen banished me from the palace, my husband disowned me, and the council banished me from the kingdom in anger. They told me to return only if I brought the child. I knew Aayan was the only one outside all the intrigue, the only one who could protect our child . . . so I've spent years trying to find him. I thought he was here . . ." Her lip trembled. She looked at Tala with large eyes, silently pleading.
Tala unfolded her arms and sighed. "And you didn't do any of this," she said sarcastically, "just because you love my cousin and want to see him again?"
Nizhoni bit her lip. "That is the one thing I can not lie about. I have always loved Aayan. I belong to him."
Tala looked away. Ugh. "I'm afraid you'll never see him again. Or the child."
Nizhoni's eyes widened. "What!"
Tala looked at her dispassionately. "The king here is cursed. He needs to marry a female to break the curse. Any female will do. Just has to have a vagina. Unicorn . . . wolf . . ." Tala looked Nizhoni in the eye. "Fox."
Nizhoni stiffened. "You gave me to that horned brute!"
Tala laughed, thinking of how gentle King Eyrrothaz was when she was in his arms. "Not that you were his first choice. He wanted me initially. Then he considered my mother. It took some convincing, however, to make him even consider you."
Nizhoni sneered. "You little shebeast," she whispered, and Tala smiled. "I almost wish I had gone through with the council's plan. Did you know they were going to make me royalty in exchange for my cooperation? I would have been Queen of Miras Eii!"
"Where's the child?" Tala said calmly.
"As if I'd tell you!" Nizhoni grabbed the bars, and Tala dodged just in time when she spit through them. "Shebeast! Bitch! I would have made a better queen than your precious_Aunty Wynn! She neglected your mother and the frost wolves for _years while she searched the world for Aayan! Will you judge her as well?"
Tala was silent.
"No, you won't. Because she is your aunt and I am just your uncle's ex-tits!" Nizhoni almost sobbed. "And the king, he is no better. Once I served King Sylander with pride. Now I only pity him. He was made incompetent by his years among the mortals. Aayan would have been the better king! And I would have ruled Miras Eii at his side! With competence, dignity, and poise!"
Tala's eyes hooded. So the vixen's true motives were revealed at last: power. Nizhoni wanted to be queen. "Would you have freed the frost wolves?" she demanded in quiet disgust.
"There was no freeing them! Don't you even yet understand? What you did - it was the only way - and I would have avoided that --"
"Aayan found a way," Tala said calmly.
Nizhoni's ears pricked forward. She went very still and the anger smoothed from her astonished face. She did not know what to say.
"If you really care about Aayan, tell me where his child is. So I can tell him."
