The Running of the Humans
By Deecat aka TarantuLady
The streets are brilliant with color. Decorations of paper and glitter cover every building and tree and light post. There is a sense of expectation in the air. The Running of the Humans is an event that is very much looked forward to in Green Valley. All of the citizens turn out, as well as visitors from various lands. All species travel from near and far to watch the Running and then to pour in to the giant coliseum to watch the humanfights.
It is the biggest celebration in Green Valley. Most of the money earned by shops and vendors in a year comes from this three day festival. Visitors and tourists drop tons of cash for novelties such as human figurines, dolls (with realistic human sounds), framed pictures of previous runs, human shaped key rings, papier-mâché human masks, little jars with clipped genital hairs of humans, the list is unending. The newest item to be sold this year is My Little Human. Two types will be featured... male and female. Each My Little Human comes with a tiny human grooming brush, a human charm, and long soft hair. They are sure to be a real hit with the tourists.
The coliseum is large enough to fit several thousand furs. There are two large doors that face eachother from either side of the bowl-shaped structure. One side is where the Manadors enter. The other door is where the humans are released for the fights.
The Manadors train extensively throughout the year. They practice with human dummies and other furs, developing their techniques and learning crowd-pleasing tricks. Any fur who pleases may become a Manador, but only a small percentage makes it through their first year. It is a rigorous job that takes more training than any other profession. The Manadors are well respected by all citizens, often getting discounts from merchants and other privileges as well. After all, they are the local heroes.
It is the first morning of the Festival of the Humans. The streets are crowded with tourists and residents. The hum of excited voices can be heard for miles. There are human-pens at intervals on every street. Furs crowd in to watch the humans be prepped for the Run. Many of the humans are shouting and trying to break from their chains.
One by one, the humans are removed from their pens and taken to the nearest platform to be prepped. Their chains are attached to posts, so that their arms are spread wide. Then their clothing is cut away, much to the excitement of the furry spectators. The crowd cheers as the clothing is stripped away ceremoniously and placed in a large basket (to be sold by merchants as souvenirs).
Then the humans are washed and shaved. The males are the ones that usually buck and yell. They seem most annoyed to have their foreskin retracted for cleansing, although the preparers are always very gentle. The spectators cheer and howl or cluck or bray whenever a male human gets an erection during the cleansing process. Some of the females fight when their breasts are washed or their vaginas cleaned, but they are handled with the same care as the males. The humans are treasured and never harmed during the cleansing. The ones that inflict self-injuries, mainly minor scratches while trying to escape, are given ointment and bandages.
After the cleansing, each human is fitted with a jeweled collar and returned to the pen so another human can undergo the process. All in all, there are one hundred pens throughout the city and one dozen humans per pen.
After the cleansing the pens are all wheeled in to the center of the city, where the humans are fed meat and cheese (though many refuse the food) and given water and litter boxes. Then the pens are covered so that the humans can get their rest. They will need it.
It is day two of the Festival of the Humans. The running of the humans is about to begin shortly. Furs line the roads, all the way from the large starting pen to the coliseum. Many are waving flags and cheering as they wait for the humans to be released. Felines, canines, birds and rodents line the roads expectantly. Exotic furs from far away lands that only show up for the festival are mixed in with the crowd.
A whistle sounds and the gates to the pen rise. At first, the humans appear confused or unsure of what to do. Then the Run begins. With furs lining the streets, the only way to go is straight, and the humans do just that. They are then encouraged to keep going, by furs that chase them. New furs take over the chase as the racers tire. But the humans never tire. Their fear-induced adrenaline sends them rocketing towards the coliseum. They cover the three-mile distance with amazing speed.
At the end of the furry path the doors to the coliseum stand open and the sweating, panting humans are herded in. All of the citizens of Green Valley (and the out-of-town spectators too) file in through the doors and climb the stairs that lead to the seats that surround the arena.
The humans are separated by sex. The males always fight first, as they tend to recuperate faster from the run. The strongest males, who are least winded are checked briefly for any injuries and then placed behind the starting gates.
The Manadors line up and take their places behind the Manador entrance. The first to fight is a young skunk. He is obviously excited as he shifts from paw to paw awaiting his chance to wow the crowd. The furs in the back of the line make small talk, "I hope I get a big one", "This is my third fight and I still get so excited", "I bet I'll get my human in less than a minute"...
Then the door opens and the young skunk steps in to the bright sunshine. He walks to the center of the ring and waves to the cheering onlookers. The gate to the pen containing the first humans opens. After the first human runs out, the gate is shut and the human is placed before the door to the coliseum, the passageway back closed. The coliseum doors open and the human sees no choice but to step out in to the blinding light and see what awaits him.
As the large naked male enters the ring, shielding his eyes from the sun, the crowd goes wild. The cheering becomes even greater, when the human lifts its hand and points its middle digit at the sky for all the furs to see. It is believed to be a show of strength or an aggressive gesture that humans use to communicate during battles. Humans that flip their middle digit are usually very aggressive in the ring.
The human looks around the ring and sees the young skunk smiling and beckoning him. With a cry of rage, the confused and angered human rushes at the skunk that then dodges him with a flick of his tail at the last moment.
He turns again and runs, howling, at the skunk and swings a fist. Humans are known to use their fists and feet to attack. They rarely claw or bite. The skunk slaps the fist away, then another, and another. He lifts his leg to avoid a sweeping kick and then dances to the side as the human charges again.
Seeing that the human is nearly tired out, the skunk reaches for the rope on his Manador's belt.
There is a stand-off. The opponents stand facing eachother, the human glaring. The skunk is smiling sweetly. He is glad to have the chance to bag such a big one. The human crouches low and they walk in a circle, sizing eachother up, deciding who will make the first move.
The human charges fiercely and leaps from the ground to tackle the skunk. He makes no move to dodge the attack, but allows the man to land on him. A cloud of dust rises as they hit the ground.
When the dust clears, the skunk is on top. The human is beneath him, on its belly and wiggling. Its hands are bound behind its back. The rope is wound around its feet and the skunk holds the loose end of the rope in his paw. The other paw is patting the human on the head, affectionately. The crowd goes berserk in a roar of cheers and roses are thrown in to the bowl of the coliseum. The skunk catches one in his teeth and stands to bow, the rope still held tightly in one paw.
A wooden cart is wheeled out by two strong young bears and the defeated human is placed on it. With the help of the bears, the skunk takes his trophy back out of the coliseum doors. Several mice come out and quickly gather the roses to clean the coliseum for the next fight.
The next Manador to go is a vixen. She enters the ring with a flourish, her hips swaying seductively. She blows a kiss to the crowd and then faces the door.
She also has gotten a male human. He steps out in to the sun and looks about the ring at the thousands of furs watching him. His jaw drops and he tries to cover his nakedness. Turning back towards the door, he finds it to be closed.
He pounds on it and yells for a while before returning his gaze to the ring. This human is larger than the last, taller and more muscular. He seems to realize what is expected to happen and he approaches the vixen cautiously.
She tilts her head and turns her large ears to listen to his chant, "Oh fuck, oh fuck, oh fuck, oh fuck, oh fuck..." She almost feels sorry for the frightened creature, but then takes a fighting stance. Her arms hang at her sides, slightly bent. Her knees are bent as well and she keeps her eyes trained on his, waiting for his first move.
Two minutes pass and he still doesn't budge. The crowd has gone silent. The vixen drops to all fours and takes the loop of rope from her Manador's belt into her mouth, after tying a noose into the end. She begins to circle him on all fours, slow wide circles. He turns in place to keep up with her moves. She begins to go faster and circle closer. From only fifteen feet away, she can smell his fear and it is intoxicating.
The human is beginning to stumble from turning in place so fast. She is a blur of russet fur to him. When he tries to break away from her, she pounces onto his back and pulls his hands behind him. She drops the loop into a slipknot and tightens it around his wrists, before leaping back off and allowing him to stand. He tries to run away, but she digs all four paws into the ground, snarling in concentration. With the rope still in her mouth, she circles him close and fast. The rope pulls his feet together in three winds and he falls as she jumps to his side and secures the rope so that his feet are near his hands. She places a footpaw on his back and a paw on her hip and waves to the gleeful crowd.
Another human down and carted, more roses are thrown and the mice scurry in to gather them as quickly as possible. The next Manador is a liger. His female human is fast and takes a while to capture, but she is eventually carted away like the others. The Humanfights last throughout the day and in to the night.
It is daybreak on the last day of the Festival of the Humans. The Manadors recline in their lavish quarters, each with a human or two chained near the foot of their bed. Family and friends visit with gifts and praises for their Manadors, and to see the humans that they have bagged.
The humans have been cleaned again, more privately. They realize at this point that they are unlikely to come to any real harm. Furs pose for pictures with the humans, or just pet their smooth, hairless bodies. Some paint their humans decoratively. They feed them and talk to them (it is customary not to speak with the humans until after the fights). They take them for walks on their leashes, to show them off.
By the evening, most furs have bedded one or more humans and they stay up late into the night, swapping and having orgies. The furs marvel over the foreskins of the males that replace normal sheaths, and the shaved and beautiful clits and lips of the females. They watch as some of the humans who can be coaxed to mate among themselves. They take them for a moonlit swim or feed them fruit in their beds.
The sun always rises too soon. It is time to end the festival of the humans. They are given white cotton dresses or pants and then loaded in to a dozen buses, headed back to Human Country. Each one has a small mark tattooed behind their ear, so that next year, when it's time to gather the strongest, fastest humans that can be caught, all of them are new.
