#1 of Blue Eyes

"So this is Vegas," the husky mused as he surveyed the scene before him. The burgeoning township teemed with life. People went about their business at a frantic pace that seemed at odds with the rough tranquillity of the surrounding desert. There had to be at least three brothels in town and the stage was in. Far too many people for his liking.

He trotted his dappled roan through town. People rushed by without giving him a second glance, others avoided him completely. Joshua was an imposing figure on horseback: hat pulled low over intensely pale blue eyes, his snowy white fur in stark contrast to his horse's dark hue. A casual observer would have noticed how expertly he controlled his horse with his knees, calloused paws holding the reigns loosely out of habit: wrangler or rustler? A less casual observer was careful not to observe too closely. Upon reaching his destination he vaulted lightly from the saddle and hitched the rains to a post.

Joshua pushed through the swinging doors, turning quickly to avoid them crushing his shaggy white tail. He winced as they clattered together behind him. It seemed a rule that all saloons looked this way: hot, dark, smelling of old polished wood and cheap liquor. The ornate textured wallpaper was peeling and the hard-wood floor was stained dark in places. The barman, too, embodied his role with stereotypical ease.

"What'll it be?" The rabbit asked as Joshua stepped sat down at the bar.

"Half a whisky." came the slightly bashful reply. Money was tight these days, especially for an out-of-work wrangler.

"You come in with the stage?" The barman asked idly, measuring out the drink with expert economy.

"Nope,"

"I hear the stage broke down a lot of strange folk in town."

"Reckon," the husky took a swig and smiled. He missed conversations like these out on the trail.

A diminutive fox suddenly burst in through the doors. The buttons on his once bright green waistcoat threatened to part company around his ample middle. A gentlefox, probably blew in with the stage.

"Four dollars to the next vagrant on his way to Los Angeles." he started without preamble. His voice was as groomed as his fur: not a voice used to being ignored.

"Five then," he added gruffly, "and not a penny more."

His beady eyes caught Joshua at the bar and he waddled over. "I'll make it six, boy, if you don't ask any questions." The old fox's eyes narrowed with irritation, he was obviously unused to negotiating with the working class. Six dollars was more than a week's wages, and to go where he was already headed? It was a very good deal.

Joshua nodded slowly "I'm headin' that way..."

"Good, meet me at the general store tomorrow at eight. I have... something you need to take with you."

Hey shook paws and he left as quickly as he'd come.

"City folk" the barman intoned in disgust, polishing a filthy glass with an even filthier rag, out of habit more than diligence.

The "something" turned out to be none other than the wry old fox's son, straight out of New York University. Joshua bit back the growl deep in his throat. He wasn't used to travelling company, especially not a tenderpaw.

"I am sorry, sir. I'm no good with children."

The young fox almost fell off his horse in indignation.

"You can't do that, boy, we had a deal!" the old fox fixed him with those mean little eyes, "and besides, I'll wager he's not a year younger than yourself."

Joshua grimaced and looked the young fox up and down. The vulpine tried to keep his balance while simultaneously giving Joshua a filthy look.

It was true, the fox was a head shorter than himself, but judging by his face they were probably of comparable age. He was a slender version of his father, right down to the markings on his muzzle, except that his eyes were kinder and he looked more used to smiling than frowning. He seemed pleasant enough. The big husky sighed. "A deal's a deal."

The old fox nodded curtly and pressed some money into his paw "More to come once you've sent word." and then waddled off without a backwards glance.

The first night was a tense one. The young fox, Mike he said his name was, sat on the opposite side of the fire and drank his coffee as though he expected it to be confiscated at any moment. That morning they had argued over who should be leading and which was the better trail, even though it was obvious who knew where North was and who didn't. It all ended with a bark and a whimper. The husky sipped his coffee and tried not to look the sulking vulpine in the eye.

Joshua was up with the sun next morning. He cleaned up camp, banging the pots as loudly as he could, but the fox didn't even twitch in his sleep. He curried the horses then returned to the site. Mike was snoring softly. Joshua poked him gently with a boot.

"Good morning, your lordship, it's time we got going."

"Five minutes." the fox retorted and rolled over.

"No, not five minutes, now! We need to get to the next campsite before breakfast."

"Sleep now, ride later."

"The desert doesn't wait on your convenience." Joshua ripped the blanket off the lethargic fox who groaned loudly in displeasure.

"I can see why my father chose you. A man after his own heart I am sure!" he grumbled as he mounted his horse groggily.

Despite the late start, they managed to make pretty good time. At around mid-afternoon, Joshua glanced back at his travelling companion with concern. He wasn't used to this sort of travelling, and they had been riding pretty hard. "Perhaps we should stop soon? You look tired and..."

Mike bristled "I'm not tired, despite your best efforts! If you're tired, you can stop but don't blame me". Joshua's hackles rose. "Fine, we'll make a full day of it then, shall we?"

It was well past nightfall when they finally made camp. Joshua had pushed on till he could barely see the trail by the light of the waning moon and the fox had followed stubbornly. The husky felt more than a little guilty when he heard Mike leave his saddle with a little whimper of pain.

"You ok?"

"Let's see: I'm cold, tired, hungry and dirty. I've just spent the last two days six paces from a country-dog whose pong I could follow from another county with a blocked nose in the pouring rain and I think the saddle's just taken all the fur off the insides of my legs. So: yes, everything's just peachy, thank you!"

Joshua's ears flattened and he was sure they must be glowing red. "Do I really..."

"Let me put it this way: I've been trying to figure out what you've rolled in but every time I think about it, my eyes water"

Needless to say, dinner that night was not particularly convivial either.

The next morning, Joshua let the fox sleep in an extra hour without so much as a growl.

They reached the river by mid-afternoon and Joshua announced they would make camp early. Mike had been complaining about his saddle again but that wasn't the real reason for the early stop. Once the campsite was all set and food was on the boil, he snuck down to the river with some soap and a towel.

"Make his eyes water" he mumbled to himself as he made his way to the water's edge. The water slowed to an ebb here, coiling lazily around the dense foliage. It pained him to admit it but he wanted to make a good impression. He could be just as proper as any one of these shiny-coated city folk. The husky lowered himself into the water and started scrubbing vigorously with the soap. The lather ran idly down the river and slipped quietly downstream. Once he was certain he could smell nothing but soap and water, he shook himself off and returned to the fire. Perhaps he still had some of that scented flea powder Ma gave him for Christmas.

As he approached the camp, however, he was greeted by a strangled yell of surprise.

"Yaaah! What are you doing?" Mike was sitting up in his blanket, mouth agape in shock at the sight of the naked husky caught in the firelight. The light played over Joshua's naked form, his damp fur clinging to his body, leaving nothing to the imagination. "Please" the fox yelled, raising an ineffectual paw to obscure his view "Don't..."

"Short-red-shiny-furred prick" Joshua growled, wrapping the towel around his waist and preparing for bed. His internal commentary was different, however: Idiot! This is not some country lout who is used to public nudity! He's probably going to have nightmares now because of you! He rolled into his blanket before he was completely dry and blinked back the tears. Why did this matter so much to him?

The next morning, Mike's humour seemed to have improved a little. After a few hours in the saddle he re-kindled the conversation. "Look, I'm sorry I complained about the smell, and ... last night..."

"And I'm sorry I laughed when you fell off your horse" Joshua fought back a smile "twice"

The fox studied the ground intently.

Perhaps that had been going too far.

"I mean, it's not your fault, you're just a little small for that horse, is all"

"I beg your pardon?"

"I said you're a little small..."

"Yes, I heard you the first time!"

Joshua fell silent.

"Look, can we start over?"

The fox brightened a little "Hi, I'm Mike"

The husky's tail wagged gently "Joshua"

They reached a ford at dusk. The spring thaw had turned a usually docile stream into a torrent. "Wait there" Joshua commanded and dismounted. He quickly scouted up and down the river for a better crossing but this was the best spot. He pulled a coil of rope from his saddle bag and tied one end around the surprised fox's waist and the other around his own. "Now, follow me and do as I do. Stay on your horse and don't slip. If you do, this rope'll help but it's not much." The fox nodded slowly, his usual smirk marred by fear. "What do I do if you slip?" Josh handed him a hunting knife. "Cut the rope and keep on going. I'll catch up". He grinned confidently. The fox swallowed and stowed the knife in his pocket.

Without further preamble, Joshua plunged his horse into the icy water, leading his horse behind him. He didn't feel as confident as he sounded but there was no reason to worry them both. The stream only came up to his knees, it was really just the speed of the water rushing past that made it so dangerous. He turned back and was greeted by an uncertain grin. He turned ahead, about half way now. He turned back, Mike was clinging to his horse's neck now, but he seemed ok. The husky turned ahead, almost there... A tug on his waist made him spin back frantically. "Mike!" He had just enough time to take a quick breath before he was plunged into the icy water himself.

The frigid torrent made it hard to breathe and for the first time in his life he was grateful for his thick husky fur. Mike had drifted into the centre of the stream. Joshua grabbed onto the rope and started pulling it towards him, pushing up off the bottom for a breath of air. When he at last came to the fox he grabbed him by the collar and dragged him to the nearest bank.

Gasping for breath and pumping with adrenalin, he hurled the fox unceremoniously onto the grassy bank and landed beside him, panting. He drew out his hip flask and took a swig. That should keep the cold at bay a few moments more. He then crawled on paws and knees to Mike's side and turned him over. The diminutive fox's muzzle was turning blue but he was still breathing. Joshua forced a splash of whiskey down his throat and pushed the flask into his shaking paws. "Don't move" he cautioned unnecessarily and set off at a run to find one of the horses, without those saddle bags, they were as good as dead.

His breath burned in his chest, he could feel his body beginning to shut down against the cold and the strain. He came to the ford and cast around desperately. His heart leapt to his throat when he finally found his horse standing bewildered on the bank. He grabbed his saddle bag and returned to find the fox gulping whiskey down through the shakes. "Take them off" Joshua commanded, proffering their only towel to the confused vulpine. "Your clothes, he elaborated" turning around to make a fire. Luckily it hadn't rained recently and he was able to start one up quickly. He then took his own clothes off, shook as best he could and bundled them both up into their one and only remaining blanket.

They lay there in the blanket, nose-to-nose, shivering silently. For a good five minutes neither spoke, too busy fighting off the hypothermia which threatened to sink them into eternal sleep. It was Mike who first broke the silence. "Imagine what people would say if they could see us like this?" He tried to giggle but his chattering teeth ruined the effect. "Say?" Joshua replied incredulously "I don't mind much what they'd be sayin' as long as they brought some blankets."

"No, no, I mean what they would think about, you and me, naked in the blankets? They might think we were ... you know"

The husky shrugged as best he could "No, I don't. I don't think I'll ever understand city-folk. Besides, you're drunk."

"You really don't know what I'm talking about do you?" Mike raised a paw uncertainly as if to touch him on the muzzle.

"Yeah, I don't know much" Joshua retorted hotly, he was getting a little tired of all this condescension "But I know this: if you don't get closer you're going to die. You're shaking like a leaf and I have heat to spare"

"I don't doubt it" the fox replied and turned, burying himself closer into the husky's warm fur. Joshua pulled the blankets tight and started rubbing the fox's arms to keep the blood flowing. "Keep talking and don't fall asleep"

So, Mike talked through chattering teeth. It turned out he was on his way to Los Angeles to join a small law firm on the coast: Shorter and Shorter. Joshua managed not to laugh. "It's a good firm, good money, but that's not my true calling." The vulpine leaned forward conspiratorially "I'm writing a book about the West, a novel." He grinned "I think you'll feature as a character." Joshua chuckled, he liked books.

After a while, Mike's shivering stopped and he breathed out softly. "And what about you, Josh? (I can call you 'Josh' can I?) What's waiting for you on the coast?"

"Well, I don't plan on writing any books, if that's what you mean," the husky replied yawning, fighting back the urge to sleep himself. "I need to find me a girl and have grandkids, or Ma's going to have kittens all on her own. Do you have a girlfriend, a wife?"

Mike's grew tense. "Maybe it's the whisky but I think I had better tell you something."

"Ok."

"Please just listen and promise me you won't overreact."

The husky nodded slowly.

"Ok," he drew a breath "I'm gay."

Josh frowned in confusion. "That's crazy"

The fox's ears drooped a little and he sniffed.

"I mean I'm generally happy, but I am not very happy at the moment. I think you're just drunk is all."

Mike's ears perked up again "No, not gay as in happy, but queer... No, I mean I like men, rather then women"

Josh considered this. "Some men are not worth likin' though" he thought back to some rustlers he'd once known.

"No, no, no. If I were to ... you know, 'marry'. I would want to ... 'marry' ... a guy. You see?"

Silence

"But how do you..."

"We find a way"

"Oh..."

More silence

"Are... we... now?"

"No! No! It's not like that I swear."

"Ok, well to each his own I suppose."

"Yes, I suppose."

More silence.

"Mike?"

"Yes?"

"How does one know if he's... funny."

"Gay?"

"Gay."

"Well, for me, I never could maintain a relationship with girls and I find myself attracted to guys. It's quite simple really."

Joshua thought back to the third night and smiled slowly. "You... attracted to anyone I know, Mike?"

"Not telling."

Silence

"Ok, fine: Yes, yes, I like you! You're strong, sweet, and sexy. I wish this night would never end so I could stay here safe in your arms forever."

"There! Now that I've perfectly debased myself forever perhaps we can both get some sleep?"

True to his word he shortly drifted off to sleep. Josh checked his pulse and breathing, he was warm enough to sleep without worry now. He leaned forward and kissed the fox gently on the neck, grinning guiltily. Ma may just have to do without grandkids.

When Mike awoke he was the only one in the blanket. The fire was blazing higher, and he could smell soup boiling in the pot. He yawned and stretched, shielding his yes from the morning light. At first he didn't know why he felt sick to his stomach. Then he remembered: You told him. You told him? You dolt! Now he probably thinks you've been perving at him all along! Of course, Mike knew that it would be a perfectly accurate assumption, but that was quite beside the point.

He rolled out of the blankets and dressed quickly, cursing himself softly. The scent of Josh was all over the campsite: warm and comforting. He had left to the North not too long ago. Or was it East? Who bothered with that stuff anyway? "Imbecile, lout! Father was right, I ruin everything I touch" As he finished buttoning his coat, Josh appeared, also fully clothed and leading the horses behind him. "They didn't go far; they were just a little frightened is all."

"Josh, last night, I said some things that... Look I'm sorry I just wasn't thinking. You know, the whisky and all? I hope it doesn't make you think ill of me" he ended weakly.

The large husky shrugged as he tethered the horses to a nearby tree and checked their hooves.

"I mean, I do like you but it doesn't mean I'll do anything about it, honestly".

Josh checked the fire and looked at the fox quizzically

"Let's just pretend it never happened" if he wasn't already red, Mike knew his ears would be glowing "just forget it, please?"

"That's a pity" Josh smiled slowly "I guess I brought these flowers for nothing then" he pushed them roughly into the fox's paw.

Mike looked down in confusion "flowers?"

It was the husky's turn to look uncomfortable, his ears reddened. "I ... I don't know how this is supposed to work, but with girls it normally starts with flowers..."

The glow of realisation slowly dawned on the fox's face "You can't be serious! Last night you didn't even know it was possible and now you want to... to... 'go out' ?"

"I learn fast" the husky said softly. "If you'll have me" he added uncertainly, suddenly interested in getting something off the side of his boot.

"Yes, yes, of course!" Mike looked down at the blanket. Had he really woken up at all?

"It's settled then. Eat up and we'll head for town, it's only a day or so now"

Mike ate his soup quickly and they talked. It was almost as if nothing had happened, but with one small difference, Mike just couldn't stop smiling.

~

It was nearing nightfall when they arrived at their next campsite. Josh set up camp quickly and, as usual, Mike felt surplus to requirements. Dinner was ready and coffee on the boil in no time.

Mike reached out and stroked the husky's soft face. He looked so peaceful, not a care in the world.

Josh opened his eyes dreamily and smiled. "Trouble sleeping?"

"Something like that"

The husky's pale blue eyes shimmered in the firelight "Want to talk a little?"

Mike grinned guiltily. "I'm not thinking too much about talk, to be honest."

Josh gaped as the thought occurred to him. "Really? Right... now?"

"Oh, it's completely up to you" Mike gushed. "I just thought that if you were curious, I could show you, you know?"

Joshua grinned shyly. Truth be told, he was curious. "I... I don't want to take advantage." Mike moved in a little closer and looked deeply into the husky's eyes. Then he leaned forward and stole a lingering kiss.

Josh's heart raced. He had never felt so excited and so terrified at the same time. The feel of the fox pressing against his chest, the rasp of their tongues together, the way Mike panted a little when their muzzles parted. He could hardly breathe himself.

They kissed again, this time Mike pulled at the husky's shirt, Josh fumbled with the buttons, returning the kiss in kind. The vulpine pulled off his companion's shirt, running his paws through the thick white fur. Josh shivered as the slender paws searched his body. He'd never had another man touch him in that... "Hey!" he yelled involuntarily as the paws made their way into his pants. "Sorry," Mike breathed, "I'll go slow."

"Cold paws." Josh lied, managing to get Mike's shirt off at last. He felt an immediate stiffening at the sight of Mike's exposed red fur.

Mike reached down again and made short work of the husky's pants. Josh whined as Mike's soft paws played gently over his sheath. "You like that?" Mike panted, and worked harder. Josh rolled onto his back with a moan. "Not fair" he groaned and grabbed the fox roughly by the waist, spinning him onto his back. "Two can play at this game." He growled. Pinning the struggling vulpine down with one arm he slowly slid his paw down into the soft fur in Mike's pants.

Mike's response was immediate and he started panting heavier. Josh's own heart raced as he worked his rubbed the growing shaft in his paw. It had the desired effect: his every touch had Mike writhing and panting for more. Josh used both paws to finally remove Mike's last remaining clothing, then climbed on top of him, muzzle-to-muzzle, supporting his weight with his arms on either side of the vulpine's head. For a brief moment, they just stared at each other, hot breath misting in chill night air.

Then Mike wriggled a little and turned over onto his stomach. He pushed himself up onto all fours, rubbing his ass against the husky's groin. Josh kissed his diminutive companion on the neck and whispered into his ear: "You sure? Is this what you want?"

"Yes!" came the emphatic reply.

Josh found himself drawn towards his mate's ass; he pushed forward and felt the head of his throbbing shaft brush up against Mike's sphincter, pre-cum lubricating copiously. His pulse raced as he pushed further and further until Mike gasped.

He took a better grip and pushed even harder, burying his cock as far as it would go. Mike shuddered. With pleasure or pain, Josh didn't know, but he couldn't stop now if he wanted to. "Sorry" he managed. He drew back gently and rocked forward again. Mike's cry was definitely of pleasure this time and it egged Josh on.

His thrusts became more rhythmic, more insistent and he started grunting as he pushed harder and harder into fox's welcoming body. Mike moaned as the husky's knot stimulated his prostate. Every thrust sent waves of ecstasy through his body. As Josh rocked forward, he licked Mike on the side of the muzzle. He felt himself building up, it wouldn't be long now. He pushed even harder now, harshly, roughly.

Mike yelled and Josh felt a hot wetness on his paw as Mikes cock pumped his seed all over it. This was too much for Josh, he came suddenly and violently, hot semen flooding the fox's insides and as continued to pump in and out erratically.

They collapsed together in a heap, not caring where they fell as long as it was in each other's arms.

Joshua woke with a slightly addled brain. He and Mike, their bodies entwined under the starlight, fur matted by sweat in the heat of passion. He smiled dreamily. Where was that little rascal anyway? He sniffed speculatively and got a muzzle-full of wildflowers instead. "Flowers?" he picked them up uncertainly.

"Yes" came a cheerful voice behind him. Josh rolled over and his smile broadened. His diminutive companion was making a valiant effort with breakfast, but by the look of things he probably hadn't cooked a meal in his life.

"What...?" Josh began

"I've been thinking" Mike interrupted distractedly.

"Ok..."

"I don't want to give you the wrong impression" the fox took a breath as if he meant to finish the conversation on one breath alone.

"You see, I... I'm not the kind of guy who just takes flowers. I ... I also give flowers."

Josh grinned, Mike sure was cute when flustered.

"Cute." he said out loud. It felt good to say it.

"Yes... no, no! Ok, ok. I admit I'm not the most" the fox screwed up his face searching for an appropriate word "... masculine guy, but I am a man nonetheless"

"That you are" Josh conceded dryly. Mike had yet to get dressed this morning.

"It's just" Mike's voice quavered. "I don't want you to think that you're, like, the guy and I'm, like, the girl, I..."

Josh lunged forward without warning, grabbing the ankles of the anxious fox, who summarily fell over with a most un-masculine shriek. The husky pulled him into the blankets 'till they were nose to nose.

"I get it" he whispered softy into the fox's ear. As he whispered he gently ran his right paw over the transfixed vulpine's genitals, drawing a satisfying shudder from his partner. He tried harder, stroking softly until he's coaxed the fox right out of his sheath. He stroked the shaft with his paw until Mike started panting. "You like that do you?" he grinned at the helpless vulpine.

Josh relished this control, that he could bring such pleasure to another person. Slowly, he willed himself to let go. Mike deserved more than that, he could give more.

With his heart in his mouth, he rolled onto his back, lifted his legs and proffered himself to his partner. His heart beat painfully in his chest. Was this what he wanted? Was this good enough? For an interminable moment, Mike just lay there, on top of him, panting, staring into the husky's eyes. Then, slowly, he started to move himself into position. "Are you sure... this is ok?" he asked hesitantly. "Yes" the husky replied gruffly and pulled the fox towards him. The bulbous shaft penetrated him and the husky breathed in sharply through his teeth.

Josh bit his cheek against the pain that came at him in waves. It was a sweet pain, made sweeter by the sounds Mike was beginning to make. Te vulpine rocked back and forth, kissing his muzzle calling his name. The strokes became longer and deeper. Mike's moans became incoherent as he concentrated more on thrusting. It didn't hurt so much anymore. In fact every time the fox pushed, Josh felt his own erection throb in sympathy.

Mike suddenly started speeding up uncontrollably. He stopped making any noise at all and he dug his nails painfully into Josh's shoulders. Finally with a cry that sounded like something between pain and triumph he came hotly inside the husky.

They throbbed in unison. Josh relished the warmness of him, the intimacy of the moment. He had never felt more at one with anyone than he did right then. Mike collapsed on top of him, panting as though he had run a marathon. "Was that good?" Josh asked worriedly. "I thought it would be better if I could see you and ..." Mike shushed him by gently closing his jaws. Then he kissed him and cuddled deeper into the husky's soft white fur.
