It's Just a Game

I had just recently been released from a psychiatric facility, or at least that is what I called it. What it actually was, was a nut house, but I never liked that term. I had actually grown up quite healthy mentally, and physically. No real issues besides what I can only describe as well as the doctors at the facility as being a kid, teen, and young adult. The classic mid-life crisis, or at least a miniature one, one in which case makes you worry of where you will end up what colleges will you go to and weather or not you'll amount to anything, ya'know just the classic panic fits of a person thinking about the real world and if they'll amount to anything. I was released though as I said, my mother had fought hard for me to get out taking the facility to court to get me out claiming how it was just a melt down. I think they only reason she was able to get me out was she sold all her jewelry, and my video games for a fancy lawyer. Well at least all my games she could find, I'm eternally grateful for my mother to get me out of there, the doctors at the facility were recently talking about electro-shock therapy. After leaving that damn place I started doing better I was allowed to express my self through art, story writing, and the little gaming I was still able to do with my very limited selection.

One day after I had finished drawing my new picture of a Pokemon, the Red Gyrados from generation two. It was the Pokemon I had always failed to catch, and something I don't think I'd ever get another shot at that seeing as it was one of the things my mother had sold. Honestly I'm forever grateful for all she did, but I'm a spoiled child, and I know she'll get it for me when I beg enough. After a few weeks of being home I brought it up to my mother how out of all the games she got rid of that was the one I wanted back the most. She seemed rather satisfied with my request thankfully, but told me it may be a few months before I get it. However she wanted me to really see she felt bad for selling my games, even though she had sold her jewelery she still felt horrible for selling my games, so she gave me her laptop. I remember when she handed it to me I dropped to my knees and started crying how someone could be so selfless I'll never know I love my mother for everything she's given me, but she feels it's never enough.

A few weeks had passed since I'd been given the great gift from my mother, her laptop. I decided to see if I would be able to get an emulator for Pokemon Gold, but I wanted to go out of the way looking for an emulator that was rather bazaar seeing how everything I'd been through lately was rather bazaar. After about an hour of searching the web I had found an emulator which said, "Use at your own risk. Have fun" I smiled enjoying what I had just read, it was bazaar enough for me. I clicked on it and began the download, already having the files to play the Pokemon I longed to play.

While downloading the game I heard my mother call out "Honey, I won't be home for the rest of the day, but I'll be back tomorrow at around three in the afternoon with work I'm going to get some overtime in!" I looked at the clock seeing it was nine P.M. Already. I called back "Alright mom be safe! I love you!" "Love you too dear! I'll see you tomorrow don't stay up to late!" I heard the door closed. I kind of felt good knowing I wouldn't be interrupted while I played the game. Suddenly I heard a ding from my computer signifying that a download has been completed. I clicked on the emulator watching a window pop up I grabbed the zipped file of Pokemon Gold and dragged it onto the emulator. I smiled as I saw my classic game start to load up letting it play through it's whole title screen until I went to the options "New game" and "Options." I smiled and hit New game.

I let my game go through the classic title screen, but then I heard the telephone ring. I decided to hit save game before I left the room to answer the phone just in case something stupid would happen, and I'd have to go through the intro to the game again I answered the phone getting a call from my grandmother, who told me she'd be coming over tomorrow. We talked on the phone for around an hour seeing as how I missed everyone so dearly I had a lot of catching up to do. However I was still in "recovery" so I wasn't allowed to hang out with my friends yet. This period of a type of R and R was to end tomorrow. I figure my grandmother was just to worried, and figured an extra day with just family would do me some good. Which honestly I was okay with most my friends were actually out of town seeing how the forth of July was coming soon.

After finishing my phone call with my grandmother I walked back to the game and sat down, but no sooner then I did the game screen fizzled out and the whole screen went black. Stunned by what I saw I looked at the power button, and it had said that the laptop was still on, and it had also been plugged in so it was charging. I sighed, and reached for the power button when the screen lit up with red text on the screen "I Wouldn't Do That If I Were You David." My jaw dropped I just about screamed at what I saw I pulled out my phone and took a picture of it knowing my mother wouldn't believe me if I told her. The screen returned to black then more red text appeared on the screen "David Do You Like Pokemon?" underneath the text was "Yes, Or No" with Yes underlined I figured this was just a joke of the emulator even though how it would known my name was beyond me I just tried to come to reason with the whole thing. I hit enter. Then a new text appeared on the screen Would you like to play Pokemon in real life? I laughed at this question and hit yes again I mean every Pokemon fan at one point or another wished Pokemon was real, a dream for us Poke-Nerds.

After I hit enter the screen faded to black then I stared at the camera thinking I saw a little light come from it then suddenly a light beam shot out of it seeming to scan my whole body and I started feeling exhausted, I lost conciseness. I woke up beside a small lake I stood up, and looked around my clothes had changed. I was wearing the same outfit Red had worn in Generation one, I was stunned with what I was seeing. I looked my body over finding everything out of the usual not only was I wearing reds clothes, but I had six miniature Pokemon balls on my belt. I grabbed one, and pushed the button not sure what was going on but I thought it was rather neat, but no sooner did I push the button did the ball grow I dropped it scared when a Quilava appeared before me. My jaw dropped, and I was dumbfounded I grabbed the rest of the Pokemon balls and threw them I just about passed out seeing the Pokemon before me were the same ones I had in my old game my team consisting of a Quilava Noctowl, Furret, Graveler, Victreebel, and a Slowbro. I looked over in the waters direction when I was encountered by a sight that made me scream in fear before me was a Red Gyarados ready to attack me I returned all my Pokemon as it dove for me I dogged it's swing and I grabbed my Pokemon ball throwing it yelling Victreebel I choose you!

Even though this seemed like real life I heard the music play for a battle to begin. I couldn't help, but want to cry. Before me was the rampaging beast I longed to fight, but never like this I was scared. I didn't have time to shake in my boots though the Gyarados charged at my Victreebel trying to bite him. I called out as loud as I could Victreebel, Use Vine Whip! I watched as two green tentacles came out of Victreebel's sides and whip the Gyarados, I was as they barely affected the rampaging Pokemon as I bit Victreebel. I collapses in horror seeing my beloved plant Pokemon get a large chunk of it's body bitten off and I watched in more horror as the Gyarados chewed up what he bit ans swallowed; Unable to move I watched as the Gyarados moved back down and scooped up the rest of Victreebel in it's mouth chew a few times, and swallow. I grabbed Victreebels pokeball and threw it at the beast and watched a red light shoot from it as the Gyarados was sucked in. I quickly picked up the ball and threw it as hard as I possibly could knowing it was bound to pop out at any moment. My effort was in vein no sooner did I pick it up did the ball pop open breaking. To my relief the Gyarados didn't land on me, instead he kept in the same place he was when I first threw the ball at him.

Reaching for the Pokemon balls I grabbed one and threw it. I honestly couldn't tell which Pokemon I had grabbed out came SlowBro I smiled, and yelled "Use Hypnosis!" The effort was just in vein It didn't effect the Gyarados at all instead once again it lunged at the Slowbro scooping him up in one effort and crunched up the poor creature In a frenzy of fear, and anger I grabbed all my Pokemon summoning the last of them Quilava Noctowl, Furret, Graveler. I yelled for them all to attack as quickly as they could. Amazed that they didn't even need to be told an actual move they all attacked the Gyarados at once Noctowl used pursuit Quilava used flame thrower Graveler used rock throw, and Furret using quick attack. Furret was the next to go no sooner did he approach the beast to actually touch him did it swoop down and chew up the cute Furret I yelled louder then I did before "Don't stop attacking kill that son of a bitch!" My Pokemon kept using the same attack I could tell the Gyarados was getting weakened by why wasn't it dead? It was just a level thirty My lowest Pokemon on my team was Graveler at level twenty-eight! Next thing I knew the Raging fish used what I could only assume to be thrash and in the midst of it it hit Graveler into the lake I watched him skip a few times then sink to the bottom I quickly called for him to return, but at no avail. I yelled for Quilava to run as well as Noctowl, let me fight this beast! I swear they both looked at me with a smile.

I cried, and fell to my knees they didn't listen to me. They new what fate they would become I Reached for their poke balls but when I called them back it failed. Like when Ash would try to reclaim Pikachu to the pokeball, and would fail I was suffering the same fate. They were fighting for my life! More then even their own! I screamed at them to run, but still nothing they just kept attacking. No sooner did I yell run a third time did the Gyarados lunge up at the bird quickly claiming him as another portion to his large meal. I heard the sounds of bones being crushed as the injured Pokemon in more of a rage now then ever stared at my Quilava. The last standing Pokemon I had. I quickly ran up to him, and picked him up. Not thinking of how bad of an idea it was my shirt lit on fire, I quickly jumped into the water, then swam back out Quilava was still trying. To save us, I watched the Gyarados quickly lunge at my last standing ally quickly chomping him down like he was nothing. They were dead. They were all dead, and it was my fault. I quickly grabbed the five poke balls I still had. I was going to capture and kill this thing if it was the last thing I would do!

I threw a Poke ball at the beast it clearly weakened. I watched once again as the red beam shot from the ball, and closed it wiggled a few times on the ground but out shot the beast getting more aggravated with me it went to lunge at me I threw a Pokemon ball at it. The ball bounced off it's lip, and another beam shot out I ran to the wide knowing the beast if it popped out like the very first time it'd be in full lunge still. I watched the ball wiggle a few times, and I swore it was going to click but out popped the Raging fish in more of a fuss then ever before! I watched it basically dive to the ground getting a mouth full of dirt. I threw another pokeball at it, but this one must have been broken it didn't do anything I quickly threw another one now down to my last this time it didn't even wiggle it just popped right out and lunged at me again. I threw my last ball and it got down his throat, and it just seemed to morph into a Poke ball I watched it wiggle on the ground for just a moment then out it came. It lunged at me for a final time. I fell to my knees I was dead.

I clenched my eyes shut ready to be chomped away like my close allies from the past years, but nothing came. I opened my eyes, and looked up. It was Graveler! He was holding the beast by it's mouth clearly squeezing it's jaw trying to break it. I rushed to my pokemons side and grabbed his hands squeezing too we worked together but at no avail the beast hit us both with his tail. I yelled in pain my arm had broke upon impact. I rolled along the ground with my rocky friend beside me I gave him a big hug crying hard. Once again I swore it smiled as it wrapped two of its arms around me leaving it's other two open ready to defend me. No sooner then I realized he wasn't going anywhere he picked me up with his other two arms and threw me out of the way. I watched as the Gyarados put the giant rock in it's mouth and try to clamp down on it. I watched the large raging fish's teeth shatter. As well as my last living friend in this world. Graveler like the rest was dead. Then it hit me! That's why that one ball didn't work! Graveler was still alive! So the ball was already basically containing a Pokemon! I ran for the ball and threw it. Watching it hit the Gyarados it hit the ground wiggled the three times, and clicked. I passed out.

I woke up back in my room sitting in my chair. The screen was black with red text saying "Congratulations, You've captured the Gyarados, was it worth it?" I went over, and hit No. more text appeared on the screen "Wasn't it your biggest hope to capture the Red Gyarados?" I wasn't going to lie. I hit yes. All the text faded the more appeared. Would you give up the Gyarados for all your friends back? I hit yes starting to tear up. The screen faded to black then went back to the emulator, and original screen the same as it was before I left to answer the phone except one thing. Where it said the emulators name instead it said this "It's just a game." I got rid of that emulator. I don't think I want to play Pokemon anymore.
